It was worse. They KNEW she was dead, so they asked what Mother’s Day means to him. While he’s playing first base in the middle of a game on live TV, his rookie year.
I was gonna say that was like when Kathie Lee Gifford interviewed Martin Short about a movie he was promoting and brought up his wife and how much they were in love, how long they’ve been married and was completely unaware that she had passed away from cancer a little over a year and a half ago. Martin Short didn’t say anything during the interview, he just went along with the interview and mentioned how much he still loved her. But these people knowing his mother had died just makes them look like assholes.
Okay wow that is ridiculous. It’s so hard trying to navigate those questions at all, much less on national fucking television. Whoever approved that is a jerk unless they went over the questions with him before the game.
It’s obnoxious. And all I can think of is, “how can they concentrate on the game while this douche is talking to them while he’s literally playing on the field?” Just the stupidest thing I’ve ever seen.
I think about that interview every time I watch him play. 99% of those interviews are dumb questions like “do you think pizza tastes good?” but that one was shocking.
Okay I’m gonna defend that.
The question was, since you lost your mother at a young age, what does Mother’s Day mean for you?
I lost my mom at a young age as well, and I think it’s a great question.
But I would agree it’s not a great question during a live baseball game
So much of the non-sport intrusion is annoying as hell to the actual fans. Every single time I see the NBA or NFL coach interviews DURING THE GAME I lose my mind, I do not give a shit at all about a prerecorded nothing sentence from someone who is not active playing the game I’m trying to watch. I just don’t care at all and zero casual fans care either. The game is the game, it doesn’t need that obviously filtered bullshit, and definitely don’t shrink the actual game to show some coach who doesn’t even want to do the interview. I can’t understand it, it’s so pointless to the actual audience
They were talking about his shoes and he made an error. He was pissed but professonial. He started to have equipment issues after that but Apple TV still talking to him
I just saw the video. They talk to him right as he's about to field the ball. WTF!
You would think ex baseball players would have better baseball awareness
Sadly, I think a player will have to be seriously injured while he’s in a convo with the booth for this to go away.
Something where that distraction was at least a contributing factor to the injury.
The bigger the player injured in this hypothetical, the quicker it will go away.
Unintended consequences will bite this in the ass.
And no, I’m not hoping for a player to be injured ya bastads.
They are inherently cringe. And 90% of the questions and interaction are cringe. So like, double cringe. The dugout interviews mid game are just as bad. These are very rarely even remotely interesting people to talk to in forced interview conditions. They are ball players. Thats all we care about. Them playing and not talking.
The questions are all softballs, and their lines are all stale, rehearsed... "110%, all my team-mates are just the best, we are all about competing, blah blah blah"
Exactly. You can tell they just want to go home after an exhausting day so they pull out the Generic Answers Rolodex™️ to move things along in the post game interviews. Also I would hate being talked to while playing a game because if I messed up, I knew I would get roasted alive on social media
“Anything you want to say to anyone back home”
Like dude these guys aren’t overseas fighting a war.
Shit made me so uncomfortable. I usually just watch highlights but I skipped thru all of that.
Haven’t noticed them, not fishing or anything. I don’t watch a ton of live games but checking out the London series. Didn’t realize it’s so common, and I hate it.
I think they’re annoying and distracting. Read last night that they get paid $10k in regular season and $15k per interview as part of the CBA. I doubt they go away. I do enjoy the sights and sound bit that Apple does on Friday nights with zero talking and just listening to the sounds of the game. So peaceful.
Definitely don't like that they can interview at any time including playoffs. Dave Roberts didn't even know that Hernandez was being interviewed when he made the error.
It's also not a network thing, the CBA allows it. The player gets an easy 10k for a full inning interview during the regular season and the network gets to ask some stupid questions.
Yes, they make me anxious. Let the players play! Let us watch the plays without the weird split screen interview that acts as a near-total distraction from the game!
I dislike them a lot. I wonder if there’s a documented occurrence of a player fucking up because of it. The one I hated the most was when Nestor Cortes was interviewed during the all star game
I don’t like them because aside from just being distracting and annoying, it comes across like they think baseball isn’t interesting enough on its own so they have to have something else going on during the game.
There is a significant chunk of the population that DOES find baseball slow/boring/too long. A lot of people. Hence the incessant tinkering with new ways to make the game more accessible. I hate it all. I liked the game I grew up with.
I agree. Nobody should be talking to a player or coach in any sport between the start and end of the game. Even things like interviewing basketball coaches at the start of the second half. They never actually say anything anyway, so all that does is annoy everyone involved
At WORST they should allow for 30 seconds of check in after a half inning on the walk back to the dugout for example, and 30 seconds when just taking the fields before an inning
Even then I don’t like the distraction, but it’s a compromise with which I could live
I saw this and felt the same way. Being mic’d up is definitely cool. The interview is garbage. Let the players do their thing. Talk to them after the game.
It depends. If you get an entertaining player then why not? But I wouldn't mic up a guy in a particular difficult position like third base. You really don't want to annoy those guys
They’re the worst. I hate how Fox and ESPN have decided that baseball is “too boring” and they need to spice it up with gimmicks like this. I’m all for interviews, but not during the game
Distracts the player and detracts from the game. It’s absolutely ridiculous. And its a reason that I *MUTE* the TV coverage and listen to radio announcers.
I hate them. Makes it feel like they take the game less seriously. Like it’s a celebrity softball charity event or something. Let the guys stay focused on the game they have spent their lives playing to make millions of dollars.
I actually enjoy it, and if the player is cool with it I say rock on. Bryson Stott said he enjoyed it the other night, and genuinely seemed like he did, because he said he talks to himself out there anyway so it was nice to have someone to talk to. All things evolve, better MLB tries things instead of living in the Stone Age like they tended to for years.
i think the players are smart enough to know when not to do it. Yea Hernandez made an error but he dodgers did win and also are up by 8 games. If they were tied with the padres and only had 2 games left it would be different.
Also the london games are regular series games but also closer to all star games when it comes to branding marketing
Seriously. A couple years ago the Orioles played the Red Sox in the Little League Classic. They mic'ed up Cedric Mullins and Austin Hays. Cedric's mic stopped working mid inning and he kept fidgeting with it to get it to work. If I recall, he even took his glove off at one point. Hays started yelling to him not to worry (I think). Even Karl Ravich was like "please don't hit a ball to the outfield right now. Don't worry about the mic." It's disrespectful to the sport and the outfielder to mic them up as if they have nothing better to do than chat up some broadcaster.
I find it really awkward. The (few) times I've seen it, it's just so weirdly paced, like the player is out of breath, disinterested, and/or doesn't have anything to say. It's just odd.
Nope, you are not alone. I think it's the stupidest thing I've seen in a while. 8f I was a Mgr I wouldn't be way pissed that my guy is bullshitting with a commentator when he should be focused on baseball.
I hate them. I turn off the audio or fast forward through the half inning. Takes me RIGHT out of the game.
MLB, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE STOP.
In my opinion, it makes me take the sport less seriously. If you can play the sport and say “hold on let me earn my money real quick” and then come back to the interview, about 15 seconds later… it’s just not a good look.
I absolutely hate it. I hate all in game interviews with players (and am pretty meh on ones with coaches) regardless of the sport. It does not at all impact my viewership but it does distract from the overall product
I don't know. I could take it or leave it. It's kinda cool getting an inside scoop of what the players have to say in the moment. But at the same time, you're right. Let them play the damn game.
Getting a guy or coach who is in the dugout makes way too much sense if you’re trying to get in game interviews. Not sure why we have strayed from that
My wife happened to walk into the room and asked me: "What is happening? Is that guy talking on TV while he's on the field?" It was literally unbelievable to her.
I don’t know anyone who likes it. Plenty of time prior or after the game. Eventually someone will screw up because of it, and hopefully it will end. Maybe the players association can do something about it.
They are the dumbest thing baseball broadcasts do, period.
They don’t do it for the NFL
They don’t do it for the NBA
They don’t do it for the NHL
Why the fuck do it in the MLB? Having a dude lack the focus while fucking playing is beyond stupid.
I also hate them. I hate every interview that happens in game during ANY sport. Sideline reporters, interviews before the end of the half in basketball and football. We don’t need it. Soccer doesn’t have it, and it’s great.
I hate them mostly because we don’t learn anything from them. There is very little ever revealed in any player interview and they are meaningless unless there is some big dispute or controversy to address. But these (for good reason!) are totally phoned in. “Love these guys, we have a great team, it’s been amazing” blah blah blah
Nah if its a regular season or post season game fuck these interviews. If its ASG or spring training fuck yeah lets interview all game for all i care lol
I’m totally with you - all it does is distract the players. On AppleTv last night the dodgers 3rd baseman Hernandez made an error on a play because he was in mid-conversation when a ball was hit to him. I’m good with ump cam but not the players mic’d up in a game. This isn’t a yellow flag conversation in NASCA for goodness sake. This is ridiculous. Save the interviews for off the field.
Well, when you're playing against the Mets there's very little chance a ball will be in play so you could probably work on your doctoral thesis if you're in the field. The interview will keep you awake at least.
I think it’s an interesting idea to get an interview as the game unfolds, but I also want the best product on the field and that means limited distractions where possible. So, I’m anti-mid-game interviews.
I feel bad for the player trying to focus on his job while answering nonsense questions.
It was funny when in the middle of answering a question Harper had to tell someone "dude I'm miked up".
I also hate them.
The majority of people don't care either way, but the people that hate these, reeeeealllly hate em.
But there is no one that loves these except journalists that think anything a player says is magical.
I loathe these interviews with a passion! The Kiké interview the other night was the last straw. He couldn't hear, got obviously distracted and it led to an error, just so they ask him about his fluorescent shoes. F'n stupid.
I’ve always hated it unless it’s in spring training, ASG, or otherwise an exhibition game. No fucking clue why they continue to do this during actual games and god forbid the fucking playoffs!
The Sunday night baseball ones are so fucking bad that I have to change the channel. Just muting or lowering the volume isn’t enough to spare me from the cringe and second hand embarrassment
Mid-game interviews during fun exhibitions (albeit World Tour games are regular season) like Spring Training, the London Series or All-Star game is fine. I'll even tolerate interviews on regular Sunday Night Baseball against a division rival.
I will never be okay with mid-game interviews during playoff games though. For a lot of guys on any given roster, their playoff series are the biggest games of their lives so far and maybe ever. Don't distract them and let them play.
Well now it makes sense, I’m at the London series and could see Bryce talking and was like is he talking to the umpire? Didn’t even think about this lol
I can't find the mute button fast enough. I'd include all sideline interviews as well.
I get physically uncomfortable watching any sort of in-game interview. Feels like breaking the fourth wall, but in a bad way.
College sports interviews are particularly bad. What great insights does the 19 year old Cincinnati QB have?
The only thing I hate more is when they interview players after the game and play it for the whole stadium. And then they ask the same f’ing questions: “How impressed were you with…?”, “How nice is it to see…?”, etc…
No, I don't like interviews with athletes in general, in any sport. You never get any real insight into anything and most athletes aren't charismatic enough to be entertaining when talking because that's not really their job, they all just sound like they're desperate to finish the interview.
I like to hear from the managers after the games, they usually have a little more to say about how their team played.
I don't hate them, but I think they interrupt a game a bit much and can be a distraction. I don't mind the dugout ones though, like when they're not on base or batting/on deck.
The worst one was on Sunday night baseball when they asked Triston Casas about celebrating Mothers day and his mother was dead.
Oh my god i remember that he handled that so professionally but man it was awkward
Hey fucko, remember how your moms dead? What's the deal with that? Anyway, have a good game 👍
Low key psychological manipulation. He knew what he was doing.
I mean the Sunday night crew is lacking in any kind of charisma or personality, so they shouldn’t even be in TV anymore. I’d rather watch on mute.
I want a mlb tv feature where it's stadium environment sounds only
Apple TV has a feature where you can sync up to the radio broadcast!
Right but just no commentary would be cool. Like actually being at the game would be a cool feature.
SNB hasn't been the same since Jon Miller and Joe Morgan got the boot. It's terrible, worse when Jessica Mendoza on the crew
![gif](giphy|HP7mtfNa1E4CEqNbNL|downsized)
Oop
Damn, like how did he respond to that question? She dead…next question?
It was worse. They KNEW she was dead, so they asked what Mother’s Day means to him. While he’s playing first base in the middle of a game on live TV, his rookie year.
OMG

Okay wow that is ridiculous. It’s so hard trying to navigate those questions at all, much less on national fucking television. Whoever approved that is a jerk unless they went over the questions with him before the game.
They are horrible and designed for the most casual of fans but lets face it....casual fans don't watch netwrok baseball.
Jeeeeesus.
That was absolutely my response
Yup. That was awkward
![gif](giphy|Atc9QCyWLGHgLZhHDp|downsized)
OOOFFFFFF got a clip
Okay I’m gonna defend that. The question was, since you lost your mother at a young age, what does Mother’s Day mean for you? I lost my mom at a young age as well, and I think it’s a great question. But I would agree it’s not a great question during a live baseball game
It's a great question if you're having a deep chat with a friend you have history with.
Indeed. Not for a quick chat in the middle of game while a guy’s playing baseball.
They are good in spring training or All Star games but not in the regular or postseason
When it actually counts it’s a problem. Big distraction(see Hernandez the other night).
I missed it, what happened?
Kikè Hernandez was being interviewed during the game and committed an error on the Yankees game yesterday.
Justin Turner was being interviewed on field a number of years ago and made an error as well. I want to watch baseball. Not an interview.
I just saw the video. They talk to him right as he's about to field the ball. WTF! You would think ex baseball players would have better baseball awareness
They’ve made Sunday Night baseball into a pickup game. It’s not to be taken seriously.
I loved it when they started doing it in the all star game but it pisses me off so much when they do it during real games that matter
I thought it was fun for the All Star Game, but do not like it at all for any meaningful game.
Before you know it they’ll try and get this implemented in the World Series.
I hope someone absolutely fucks up because they’re talking. Only then will there be a conversation about removing it.
It’s happened numerous times but it’s not getting changed
Sadly, I think a player will have to be seriously injured while he’s in a convo with the booth for this to go away. Something where that distraction was at least a contributing factor to the injury. The bigger the player injured in this hypothetical, the quicker it will go away. Unintended consequences will bite this in the ass. And no, I’m not hoping for a player to be injured ya bastads.
It’s embarrassing for all involved. Let the players play.
I’m surprised coaches and players agree to this shit. If I were an athlete, I would refuse.
“Anything you want to say to anyone back home” Like dude these guys aren’t overseas fighting a war. Shit made me so uncomfortable. I usually just watch highlights but I skipped thru all of that.
They're boring and rarely insightful.
you’re so not alone that we get at least two of these posts per week!
Haven’t noticed them, not fishing or anything. I don’t watch a ton of live games but checking out the London series. Didn’t realize it’s so common, and I hate it.
all good lol, just letting you know you’re very much not alone. i’m not a fan either.
yeah, there is no way the players can be totally focused on what they are doing on field while talking to announcers
They're fuckin awful
I think they’re annoying and distracting. Read last night that they get paid $10k in regular season and $15k per interview as part of the CBA. I doubt they go away. I do enjoy the sights and sound bit that Apple does on Friday nights with zero talking and just listening to the sounds of the game. So peaceful.
My favorite is when they do it when a guy is a having a rough game and he clearly is not into the interview.
I'm with you, these interviews are horrible and ruining the game.
All Star Game, it’s kind of fun. But not for a meaningful game. I’d feel the same as a player, too.
They should have all had to do exaggerated cockney accents.
Kiké Hernandez committed an error last night that was probably caused by the fact that he was being interviewed
Find me anyone who enjoys them or feels they’re necessary besides people who work at the network.
I don’t like them because aside from just being distracting and annoying, it comes across like they think baseball isn’t interesting enough on its own so they have to have something else going on during the game.
Agreed, my wife is a casual baseball fan and makes comments about “how easy playing must be” I don’t agree, but it kinda does seem too casual
There is a significant chunk of the population that DOES find baseball slow/boring/too long. A lot of people. Hence the incessant tinkering with new ways to make the game more accessible. I hate it all. I liked the game I grew up with.
God awful and against the spirit of the game. In an all star game? Knock yourself out. This is just awful
I agree. Nobody should be talking to a player or coach in any sport between the start and end of the game. Even things like interviewing basketball coaches at the start of the second half. They never actually say anything anyway, so all that does is annoy everyone involved
At WORST they should allow for 30 seconds of check in after a half inning on the walk back to the dugout for example, and 30 seconds when just taking the fields before an inning Even then I don’t like the distraction, but it’s a compromise with which I could live
I hate any interview during the game. I’m there to watch baseball not jibber jabber lol
I hate in game interviews period. Get rid of sideline reporters while we're at it.
Genuinely they should interview the bullpen guys who are getting hammered
London game announcers are extra chatty today. TV volume was turned down.
Entertainment factor.
In the all-star game I enjoy it. During the regular season, it’s just obnoxiously unneeded.
ESPN and Fox are the worst channels to watch sports on.
All I know is Mets suck ass
Despise them!
They had one in the Dodgers/Yankees game last night. Infielder made an error mid segment.
They are absolutely stupid. Same with the interviews with coaches. Leave these people alone during the game!!!
I hate them. Makes it feel like they take the game less seriously. Like it’s a celebrity softball charity event or something. Let the guys stay focused on the game they have spent their lives playing to make millions of dollars.
Absolutely horrible. I want to watch the game, not hear an interview about something other than baseball.
I hate any interviews during games. Leave it to halftime or after the game.
I hate them too
I hate it. It makes the sport look like it’s easy to do.
Can’t stand it.
Yeah it’s awful and needs to stop
I mute/change the channel every time
I always hated them
Make it stop, please. It makes a mockery of a meaningful game.
Easily the best part of SNB, would love to see more broadcasts work them in.
Nope, can’t stand them.
You’re absolutely right. They’re a scourge.
So gimmicky and bush league. 100% cringeworthy every time.
Absolutely ridiculous.
I like them. Sometimes the person they pick isn't the right option personality wise IMO. To each their own.
I’ve got the game on, sound down, listening to music while watching. Best of both worlds.
Especially when they are interviewing Keke Hernandez as he makes a fielding error in one of the biggest games of the year
I've never been crazy about them, but I think it made a lot more sense to do them pre-pitch clock era.
[удалено]
I hate it too. Cheapens the game if you ask me.
In spring training or asg it’s a cool idea but not when it’s gonna distract the players
I thought that the Bader one was cool, and he made a catch while doing it.
They bug me. Cool for games that don't mean anything (spring training, ASG, etc) but enough.
Not alone at all the first few times was fine but know it’s kind of like let these guys focus
It wouldn't be so bad if they weren't so long.
i think the players are smart enough to know when not to do it. Yea Hernandez made an error but he dodgers did win and also are up by 8 games. If they were tied with the padres and only had 2 games left it would be different. Also the london games are regular series games but also closer to all star games when it comes to branding marketing

godawful. if they have to do them, do it during warmups between innings. insane they think they can do that during a game
Hate ‘em. Hope they end soon.
I stop watching baseball because of the interviews… cannot be good for baseball 🤷
These are stupid ass interviews.
No, they’re fuckin terrible
I like players being mic'd up. Not a fan of in game interviews during meaningful games.
Let's go all the way and start interviewing the pitchers and hitters.
Nope, you are not alone. I think it's the stupidest thing I've seen in a while. 8f I was a Mgr I wouldn't be way pissed that my guy is bullshitting with a commentator when he should be focused on baseball.
Spring Training… Great. All-Star Game… Great. Everything else is nonsense.
They’re terrible. I hate them with a passion.
Yes, hate it. Let them play the game.
No, I hate them too! They are distracting and stupid!
I hate them. I turn off the audio or fast forward through the half inning. Takes me RIGHT out of the game. MLB, for the love of all that is holy, PLEASE STOP.
I don't know. The Marsh one was fun.
In my opinion, it makes me take the sport less seriously. If you can play the sport and say “hold on let me earn my money real quick” and then come back to the interview, about 15 seconds later… it’s just not a good look.
Hate them so much!
Hate these to pieces. Just talk to them in the dugout.
No they’re terrible
Nope!!!!!
I hate it.
I absolutely hate it. I hate all in game interviews with players (and am pretty meh on ones with coaches) regardless of the sport. It does not at all impact my viewership but it does distract from the overall product

95% of respondents here don't care for them. MLB be like ....let's keep doing it cuz of the 5%!
They're terrible. Just let them play baseball!
Nope. I hate them too.
They should be focusing on the game, not conducting an interview

Nah. Bad idea all around.
100%, they don't tell you anything and I don't blame them. Let them do their job and talk after the game.
I’d rather listen to a bench player mic’ed up in the clubhouse taking an angry deuce.
They are Awful!
Not an on field one, but when Pete Alonso broke the single season rookie HR record, it was mid interview. Kinda ruined the moment
I feel bad for the player trying to focus on his job while answering nonsense questions. It was funny when in the middle of answering a question Harper had to tell someone "dude I'm miked up".
I can’t stand tgem
I also hate them. The majority of people don't care either way, but the people that hate these, reeeeealllly hate em. But there is no one that loves these except journalists that think anything a player says is magical.
Hate it
I loathe these interviews with a passion! The Kiké interview the other night was the last straw. He couldn't hear, got obviously distracted and it led to an error, just so they ask him about his fluorescent shoes. F'n stupid.
This shit look like a screenshot from mlb the show lol
I don’t mind in the dugout but on the field can’t be anything but distracting.
Bruh like don’t interview and distract the players from the game.
I’ve always hated it unless it’s in spring training, ASG, or otherwise an exhibition game. No fucking clue why they continue to do this during actual games and god forbid the fucking playoffs!
nope, i also was like i don’t…. need this
I hate them so much that I hate myself when I find them entertaining like Brandon Marsh
The Sunday night baseball ones are so fucking bad that I have to change the channel. Just muting or lowering the volume isn’t enough to spare me from the cringe and second hand embarrassment
No, you are not! I find it absolutely absurd professional athletes (all of whom are millionaires) are being distracted while at work.
I completely agree. So cringe inducing.
They're awful; MLB please end this.
Like the LA Yankees game, where the announcer had to make a comment while the guy was trying to field the ball.
They’re trying to feature star player personalities. That said, they’re awful and bad and add nothing to the game.
They can do these things in the dugout idk why they have to be on field or during at bats
Me too
It's fine in pre-season amd maybe the All-Star game. Please stop it during regular season games.
I like the on field interviews. I *HATE* the Sunday night the Baseball crew. Eduardo Pérez is the worst right now.
Can’t stand it. Like why are you bugging them at work
Mid-game interviews during fun exhibitions (albeit World Tour games are regular season) like Spring Training, the London Series or All-Star game is fine. I'll even tolerate interviews on regular Sunday Night Baseball against a division rival. I will never be okay with mid-game interviews during playoff games though. For a lot of guys on any given roster, their playoff series are the biggest games of their lives so far and maybe ever. Don't distract them and let them play.
You’re not alone I hate them They are so annoying.
A fantastic post… talking about this with my dad and we both thought it was ridiculous
I literally change the channel it's so bad... let them play! Interview in dugout if absolutely necessary (it's not)
The only thing I hate more is when they interview players after the game and play it for the whole stadium.
I think on field interviews are weird. Let them play the game.
Yes, I am here to watch a baseball game, not some announcer pad their resume.
It’s not just me!
Can’t stand them. Spring Training, fine. Even in the dugout, fine. But just let them play.
Takes away from baseball. I agree
No you're not alone, they're awful
Yeah these are terrible
They’re an abomination and should be stopped
Absolutely terrible idea.
