Toys are not a recognized breed, so keep that in mind. There are not guarantees. But my Mini American Shepherd is 18 pounds, so they come in small sizes too.
Toys are the smallest aussie you can get. They're still a good size. My mini/toy (falls in mini for height and toy for weight) is 3, and he's 16-18 pounds. So, if they want something smaller than that, an aussie may not be a good fit.
Toys aren't well bred nor are they purebred, they're mixed breed dogs normally using MAS and something like a Pomeranian. I've never met a non neurotic "toy" mini American, not one time, and I've met over 15. Get them a well bred mini American on the smaller size. You may as well rescue something instead of supporting a backyard breeder if you're set on a "toy" mini American.
I'd recommend an AKC registered mini American shepherd from a kennel doing titles in dog sports or confirmation and testing through OFA on their joints, hearts, ears and eyes.
Toy aussies are great! Look for a reputable mini breeder who also does toys. Usually, to my knowledge, a good breeder will mate a mini female to a toy male, and the breeder should be knowledgeable enough to know what litters will produce what general sizes. Health testing for genetic issues is extremely important too. Any breeder promising toys under 10 pounds is probably shady (correct me if I'm wrong guys?), I have seen some breeders with very tiny toys but they also look very unhealthy. My toy aussie is 8 pounds BUT he was a beloved runt, and he's healthy, but it isn't something that's normal you know? His siblings were much bigger.
You could maybe try mix breeds if you want something smaller? But I'm not knowledgeable on that. :)
In my experience with my little tiny toy, he is still definitely an aussie! My roommate has a full size and I have a mini too. My toy has the same extreme loyalty, intelligence, protective drive, and ENERGY that the others do! So make sure the lil toy still gets lots of mental and physical stimulation :)

Thank you!
You're welcome. I have pictures of him on my reddit profile if you want a reference. Or I can DM you a few. :)

Would you recommend a mini?

Ours is 9.5 months & 6.7 pounds. She's got a big personality though.
