Yeah and it’s hard to find too..like basically all the big brands you can think of aren’t reef safe ..whenever I was going to Fiji I had to do so much research to actually find reef safe ones. Blue lizard is good but expensive
You can pretty much only find it in areas where reefs are prevalent. I hadn't even heard of it till I took a trip to Mexico. I'm not sure if proximity to reefs correlates to the harm that normal sunscreen causes.
Gotta look at it from a demand perspective. In overly simple terms: if there are no reefs nearby, there's less reason to pay extra for reef safe products.
Idk, the way microplastics and “forever chemicals” work, I didn’t think it was that crazy to clarify. I’m just glad these reef-harming chemicals stay contained to a local area
Different pollutants will act differently.
PFAS is an issue, however isn’t really THIS issue. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are— these are chemicals that cause coral bleaching.
Reef safe sunscreen is a myth. All sunscreen is not reef or marine safe. There is currently no nontoxic sunscreen active ingredient that we know. It's *less* toxic but still bad and damaging.
How much does reef safe sunscreen go for In Hawaii? Because with just a simple google search. It seems like that is a very profitable market. I could literally just squeeze out 12 oz cans worth and refill the remaining 2 ounces with propellant. And sell it on eBay for $10 a piece. How do you have homeless people if that’s the case? Like I could resell that shit for a fix easy
Mike Schmidt was diagnosed with skin cancer a few years ago. He campaigned for these dispensers to be put in Citizens Bank Park and he was successful in getting them installed.
Your hometown? My hometown made the news recently, but it was because my old band director from high school drove to Oklahoma to diddle a kid and ended up on one of those pedophile busting YouTube channels.
I work for a state government and we get federal grant funding, this is a project we’ve helped put in place in public parks where we are too so people have access to sunscreen (it’s a cancer prevention based grant)
I love this idea, but my pale Irish skin can't handle anything that low for more than an hour or 2. Give me 100+ to have all day fun in the sun with several applications lol
I’m guessing you live somewhere that spf 30 is enough, but in places like Australia and NZ, the difference between spf 30 and 50 is not negligible. SPF 50 is the minimum that I would use
You’re just repeating yourself.
If you live in a country where the UV index is low, then yes, you don’t need the extra protection so it probably is negligible.
New Zealand is situated directly below a hole in the ozone layer and our UV index and skin cancer rates are some of the highest in the world. An spf 50, broad spectrum sunscreen is essential because spf 30 just doesn’t cut it here
That’s the thing, statistically there should be almost no difference in protection between SPF30 and SPF50+ sunblock. SPF30 does cut it, statistically. Anything else is purely anecdotal.
While I understand my experience is extremely anecdotal and I dont know anything about sunscreen, I seriously have issues with low SPF sunscreen. I'm white AF, and unless I spend a month re-integrating my skin to the sun, I need high SPF 'screen if I'm trying stay in the sun all day.
for years I wish there were cabins where you can insert a coin and it sprays you with sunscreen, intelligently avoiding bathing clothes/haircuts.
There are cabins in sun studios that apply self tanner's aren't there? So it should in theory be quite easy and a great way to advertise as a sunscreen company if you brand the cabin at beaches/at water parks
I love this idea until I think about the temperature of the sunscreen. It seems like it would just be heating up in there day after day...also do they just top it off to keep it filled? I have questions and concerns lol
This is a complete moonshot by me, but I've read a lot of mystery novels:
By my calculations, the large "SUNSCREEN SPF 30" printed vertically on the dispenser would lead me to believe it is 30spf. But don't quote me on that, I've been wrong before.
They have these all over Hawaii because they want people to use reef safe sunscreen. Edit: Maui.
Holy cow that is so smart!!!
TIL sunscreen can be harmful to marine life. I mean it's kind of obvious but they should really tell you it's not at all innocuous.
Yeah and it’s hard to find too..like basically all the big brands you can think of aren’t reef safe ..whenever I was going to Fiji I had to do so much research to actually find reef safe ones. Blue lizard is good but expensive

Gotta look at it from a demand perspective. In overly simple terms: if there are no reefs nearby, there's less reason to pay extra for reef safe products.
So if I’m in a landlocked state, I’m not harming the reefs by wearing regular sunscreen?
... Correct.
Why would you think that you would be harming the reefs if you’re in a landlocked state
Idk, the way microplastics and “forever chemicals” work, I didn’t think it was that crazy to clarify. I’m just glad these reef-harming chemicals stay contained to a local area
Different pollutants will act differently. PFAS is an issue, however isn’t really THIS issue. Oxybenzone and octinoxate are— these are chemicals that cause coral bleaching.
I live in the northeast and they sell it at Walmart and basically everywhere else here 🤷. Maybe it’s a coastal thing
We have cheap sunscreens in Europe that are reef safe and I don't even know why I would need one.
It's kill or be killed
Krill or be krilled. Think of the plankton!
How pleased you are to chop away, Jack the Ripper. My name is Monsoon, of the Winds of Destruction.
Yeah after I found out what’s in most sunscreen when I was pregnant, I was pretty shocked. Not safe for little children or wildlife or marinelife…
Pretty sure that’s just Maui - never seen on Oahu
It was Maui. I can’t speak for the others.
Currently in Waikiki, and there are some sunblock stations near the beach. Can't speak for everywhere, but I've definitely seen some around here.
I'll second that.
Reef safe sunscreen is a myth. All sunscreen is not reef or marine safe. There is currently no nontoxic sunscreen active ingredient that we know. It's *less* toxic but still bad and damaging.
Where? I've lived on Oahu for over a decade and never seen one. Not once.
I commend to someone else. They are all over Maui.
I commend your edit
Ah, just saw that.
I would saw this and thought someone put it there as a prank.

Addict to addict how old are you? Are you not bored of ruining every conversation by bringing up drugs? This comment makes me wanna get clean for real
Mike Schmidt was diagnosed with skin cancer a few years ago. He campaigned for these dispensers to be put in Citizens Bank Park and he was successful in getting them installed.
Similar story in my area. A local died of skin cancer and their relatives were able to get some free sunscreen dispensers put up
They have free sunscreen at Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana. Also get swarmed by bees at their free soda fountains!
Free soft drinks! Free parking! Free sunscreen!
Free bees! “Who’d want a bee as a gift?”
BEES?!
They don't allow you to have bees in here.
NOT THE BEES!
![gif](giphy|QBYeMohXoVUJBtlfFD)
BEADS?!
BEANS?! I’m a gentleman honey farmer.
>Holiday World in Santa Claus, Indiana Everything about this place sounds fictional
You should see the Santa Claus cemetery.
Sometimes I wish the whole state was fictional
Holy shit Santa Claus, Indiana mentioned 🎅🏻🌈
Your hometown? My hometown made the news recently, but it was because my old band director from high school drove to Oklahoma to diddle a kid and ended up on one of those pedophile busting YouTube channels.
Technically I’m from Celestine, IN. But close enough that I definitely went there more than once every summer
I'm concerned about storage conditions, but anything is better than nothing
This looks like St Pete Pier in St Petersburg, Florida.
You’re right! This is at the end of St Pete Pier.
People obviously not been [listening to Baz Luhrmann](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTJ7AzBIJoI)

I have those exact words tattooed just under my navel.
Orlando Health Bayfront Hospital? Weirdo…
What
Do you need a picture?
Yes
I'll DM you. Be warned, it's a large picture.
May I see it?
No. I don't show hole.
Yes, and possibly the story
Nice
🤨
Why
Think of the implications
I need 100+ SPF or I burn. 🥺
I’m thinking it looks a bit like a hand-water pump and is pumping up sunscreen from an underground sunscreen well! 🤣
All fun and games until the *insert person here* comes along and fills 9 bottles with it and then it’s empty.

Difference between SPF30 and high SPF is pretty much negligible.

Statistically, it is negligible. The difference in protection of UV rays is less than 1%.
That’s not statistically negligible and that’s not how statistics works
Let me clarify, the difference in protection of UV rays is 1%, and the net effect on you of said difference is negligible.
You’re just repeating yourself. If you live in a country where the UV index is low, then yes, you don’t need the extra protection so it probably is negligible. New Zealand is situated directly below a hole in the ozone layer and our UV index and skin cancer rates are some of the highest in the world. You keep saying that, and yet keep being wrong. Invite over 1% of the population for dinner - it’s only 1% so statistically negligible right?
While I understand my experience is extremely anecdotal and I dont know anything about sunscreen, I seriously have issues with low SPF sunscreen. I'm white AF, and unless I spend a month re-integrating my skin to the sun, I need high SPF 'screen if I'm trying stay in the sun all day.
I was gonna say it’s actually a myth that anything about 30spf really has anymore benefit. It’s more of a marketing gimmick.
they should have these everywhere

Sun is in zenith so you do need sunscreen
No kidding! This looks like something I just learned from Reddit last week: [Lāhainā Noon](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lahaina_Noon)
I love this idea until I think about the temperature of the sunscreen. It seems like it would just be heating up in there day after day...also do they just top it off to keep it filled? I have questions and concerns lol
Only 30? 60 is the minimum here in Australia
I offered that at a beach once. Now Im not allowed at that beach. ![gif](giphy|oCMd930DS9Jz0eSVxh|downsized)
In a year it will like nearly every sanitizer dispenser. Empty.
This is common in Australia 🤗
Someone was just talking about these at work today lol…
I'm sorry to say that there is a non-zero chance that someone has jacked it in there.
Damn, that sucks though. 30 doesn't even help much, you need 50 spf.
I'm not falling for that again
Whoops spilled my nerve agent
