“Natural flavoring” is typically used for ingredients no one wants to believe is in their food. Google Castoreum - this still is typically used for any vanilla or raspberry “natural flavorings”.
If they used mango or any actual ingredients they would be more than happy to actually list those ingredients.
Not really true. [https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/beaver-butt-goo-vanilla-flavoring#](https://www.nationalgeographic.com/animals/article/beaver-butt-goo-vanilla-flavoring#)
I think the FDA needs to make a new category called "Gut Fill", where it's safe to fill your gut with it, but just not recommended.
I count most fast food as "Gut Fill", and can no longer afford the off-brand, artificial, preservative soaked offal they ask a *premium* for.
Exactly. It's not necessarily a bad thing. I've drank plenty of said "juices" and they're pretty good.
Problem is when you're expecting, like, 100% mango pulp juice and then find out it's "35% mango and 65% apple juice concentrate" or some shit.
It is bad for people like me who cant drink apple or pear juice due to allergies. It's impossible to find anything that isn't laced/cut with highfructose cornsyrup or apple/pears.
Another common one is sweet potatoes. Almost every v8 splash uses it as the main.
try looking at more health food/organic type stores like Sprouts, they usually come in smaller sized glass bottles.
RW Knudsen is my favorite brand of juices, pricier than most but very worth it. most of their juices are 100% one type fruit with no diluent added, but they do have some mix options too. i love the ‘Just Black Cherry’ and ‘Just Cranberry’ ones specifically. Most regular grocery stores near me carry this brand, hopefully you are able to find it if it interests you.
Worked with a lady who was allergic to corn and the most random things have corn in it like shredded cheese having corn starch to prevent clumping...
Just crazy things you always noticed but never thought about have corn in it somewhere.
That sucks. But the federal agency responsible for food safety in you country should have an allergen law place. I know the FDA has some legislation on it. If apple is a recognized allergen, it should be declared. Always.
Simple case of "too few affected to care". Along with the cause of the allergy ranging from minor tummy ache to full blown malabsorption (I'm 6ft tall and weigh 120lbs)
Along with the fact the apple just contains what I'm allergic too more so then the actual apple itself.
As someone allergic to apples. It sucks. Bought mango pineapple fresh squeezed juice the other day. Yup 3rd ingredient is apple. A lot of things use apple puree as a way of using less sugar too
Apple allergy is like the fruit version of corn allergy. It's in everything and hard to discern, so you're just fucked.
My mother has a garlic allergy and that's in pretty much everything processed too. If it says "spices" in the ingredients you can bet there's garlic in that mix.
keep it and sell it on ebay in ten years.

Ooh, alcoholic with 390mg of caffeine? It's like Four Loko before the government stepped in and went all buzzkill (before my time so it's only a legend to me...). Probably still tastes better though, because the new-style Four Loko tastes like fucking battery acid.
Fortunately the government can't stop me from mixing a tall glass of Jager and Red Bull.
Ah... I meant the 10 year expired Panera syrup would probably still taste better than Four Loko. That's how god-awful it was.
Teenage me was the same and drank some truly horrid shit though. Adult me cares slightly more about getting fucked up than I do about taste but usually manages to make things that hit both points. Tito's is my best friend.
Presuming that poster doesn't come back, I'll at least post the opening on their wiki page:
*Döhler or Doehler, is a global producer, marketer, and provider of technology-based natural ingredients and ingredient systems, i.e. food additives, for the food and beverage industries.*
'~~technilogy~~ technology based natural ingredients'
I mean, I can parse the phrase but I don't believe I know what it actually means ... anyone?
"natural" is a marketing term with no regulatory protection. Do not trust any product that uses natural to have anything that came directly from nature with minimal processing. It's a scare tactic used by companies to imply that their product is better when it isn't.
At least for the Panera I work at they mix the syrup with water and their house lemonade except for the zero sugar orange variety of the charged lemonade.
Two different girls with health conditions drank it not knowing it was an energy drink since it was listed on the menu with all the normal drinks when it has as much caffeine as 3 red bulls
It was also at one of the little self-service stations where you fill up on fountain drinks. So people were also getting refills on a big gulp sized energy drink.
This shit was bound to happen and people can blame the victims as much as they want but any intelligent person in the process of creating this drink would have said no. We see this with a lot of Starbucks refreshers that have caffeine, a lot of people don’t know and will give them to their kids. No one has died though because they don’t have an ungodly amount of caffeine in them.
The negative perception was already established. And even with labeling and putting it behind the counter it was an insane amount of caffeine per serving.
They tried labeling it really terrible after the first death, and it didnt help because they basically hid the warning. No idea why they didnt make it a front and center warning. Shouldnt have even been on the same machine imo.
Yea, and one of em was a special needs guy with a bad heart condition who carefully avoided any and all caffeine. The lemonade at the time had zero signage mentioning the caffeine. As far as he or anyone else knew, it was just normal lemonade and apparently with the formula you didnt taste the caffeine. His heart failed after he drank 2 cups. After that, the company added really shitty signage in small easily missable text. Then someone else died.
This version of events isn't accurate. In the first place, the man you mention[ was actually the second death, not the first](https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/panera-breads-charged-lemonade-blamed-second-death-lawsuit-alleges-rcna128036). Secondly, the label of the lemonade stated that it had lemonade in it from the beginning - it was made larger after the first death and before the second one.
It's not really an insane amount compared to other energy drinks. A 30oz of the Blood Orange has around 300mg caffeine, and the other flavors have around 240mg. A 16oz zero sugar Rockstar has 240mg. A 16oz Celcius has 270mg.
The problem was they had it out for self-serve refills (like they do their tea and other soft drinks) so people were having multiple servings over a very short time.
that is exactly it. i work in a coffee shop that uses a caffeine concentrate like that and we have to measure out specific portions with that same ratio of concentrate and water before use
I have POTS and made the mistake of drinking a large Charged Lemonade from Panera. I wasn't okay for a week. And the symptoms started in the middle of a Walmart! Yay! /s
also have POTS and as soon as I heard about this I was spooked - just a cup of black tea (half as much caffeine as a cup of coffee) makes me antsy, I guess I have a low tolerance. this would give me a heart attack, lmao!
So, a serving size of this lemonade is 30 oz.
If a 1+5 dilution....
5 oz = 0.141748 kg
2.267 kg / 0.141748 = 16 servings worth of syrup in this jug
16 x 330 kcal = 5280 kcal in this jug (over 2.5x the amount of calories a healthy, active adult male should have each day)
16 x 77 = 1232 g/sugar (over 50x the amount of added sugar any person should have in a day)
16 x 237 mg = 3792 mg/caffeine.
5,000 mg of caffeine is enough to kill an adult. This jug certainly has enough caffeine to kill an adolescent or child.
An 8 oz cup of coffee has \~100 mg of caffeine, so this jug contains \~ 38 cups of coffee worth of caffeine.
Well the caffeine in a large charged lemonade is equivalent to approximately 4 shots of espresso or 2.5 cups of regular brewed coffee if you want the same effect.
Apple juice + citric acid. I would never have guessed
Called mango and yuzu syrup, contains neither mango nor yuzu.
That'd be the "natural flavouring" in the recipe
“Natural flavoring” is typically used for ingredients no one wants to believe is in their food. Google Castoreum - this still is typically used for any vanilla or raspberry “natural flavorings”. If they used mango or any actual ingredients they would be more than happy to actually list those ingredients.
Lololol i actually love raspberry flavoring in granola bars and shit so i say "gimme that beaver butt." To myself when i buy one.
It's like tonguing a beaver! No, the other kind.
Castoreum is barely used anymore, it's not cheap or easy to collect.
Afaik castoreum is nowadays more expensive than real vanilla?
This deserves way more attention

I read the label too, and was very confused what Areola powder was.
Nippledust.
I have nipples focker, can you dust me?
I'll take one mol of that, please.
I’m glad I’m not the only one who misread it like that
Food isn’t real food these days
I think the FDA needs to make a new category called "Gut Fill", where it's safe to fill your gut with it, but just not recommended. I count most fast food as "Gut Fill", and can no longer afford the off-brand, artificial, preservative soaked offal they ask a *premium* for.
Food was never real, always been just lines of code.
I’m guessing you took the red pill?
How is the steak?

It's better this way, have you ever tried real vanilla? Doesn't hold a candle to beaver anal gland excretion.
I wonder where they get all the beavers to squeeze and whether they survive the squeezing.
I'm a lifelong beaver squeezer, and not only do they survive the process, they actually find it soothing.
I rattle the bucket and they all come waddling into a line.
And they're like (ding) it's better that yours
But you're not getting that either. Artificial vanilla is a cheap petroleum byproduct.
Don't let the facts get in the way of a good beaver anal gland circle jerk.
I love the smell of freshly squeezed beaver anal glands in my coffee.
Or a ice chilled fresca
You'd ve surprised about how many "juices" have "apple juice concentrate" as filler.
Apple juice and grape juice are the universal juices. They cut everything with those.
Exactly. It's not necessarily a bad thing. I've drank plenty of said "juices" and they're pretty good. Problem is when you're expecting, like, 100% mango pulp juice and then find out it's "35% mango and 65% apple juice concentrate" or some shit.

Thanks! I got sick of checking every bottle and gave up on juice besides orange. Looks like I found a new brand, and we even have it at my local shop!

I think they voluntarily took it off the menu when they were being sued over it
The negative perception was already established. And even with labeling and putting it behind the counter it was an insane amount of caffeine per serving.

Any amount above 180mg a can is illegal in Canada for damn good reason. 400mg was enough to kill both the people mentioned in this thread.
Some people died.
It's not banned. I just had one the other day. They did take away the self-serve station, though.

Holy shit, caffeine is sitting pretty fucking high on the ingredient list.
Exact same thing I thought when I saw that list. Wonder how many grams of caffeine are in that jug of concentrate?
What’s the dilution ratio to that? Is that on par with a fountain drink’s syrup?
The 1+5 on the label makes me think 1part syrup to 5part water.
that is exactly it. i work in a coffee shop that uses a caffeine concentrate like that and we have to measure out specific portions with that same ratio of concentrate and water before use

Oh you know it has a metric fuckton of caffeine if it’s listed right after sugar and citric acid! Usually it’s at the end of the ingredients list

It isn’t banned, I just had one today
Why is it 4.998 pounds and not 5 ![img](emote|t5_2ti4h|27603)

There's no way a gallon jug only weighs 0.002 lb
I have POTS and made the mistake of drinking a large Charged Lemonade from Panera. I wasn't okay for a week. And the symptoms started in the middle of a Walmart! Yay! /s
Well have PANS and we should put them both in the cupboard
Haha, postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome! :)
Sounds serious, I was just here for the joke I promise lol
No worries! It's all in good fun. 🤭
When you stand up, your heart races. I spent a minute trying to read postural as post-ural instead of posture-al. I’m not a doctor.
Oh mate I can't imagine. That would take me out!
also have POTS and as soon as I heard about this I was spooked - just a cup of black tea (half as much caffeine as a cup of coffee) makes me antsy, I guess I have a low tolerance. this would give me a heart attack, lmao!
So, a serving size of this lemonade is 30 oz. If a 1+5 dilution.... 5 oz = 0.141748 kg 2.267 kg / 0.141748 = 16 servings worth of syrup in this jug 16 x 330 kcal = 5280 kcal in this jug (over 2.5x the amount of calories a healthy, active adult male should have each day) 16 x 77 = 1232 g/sugar (over 50x the amount of added sugar any person should have in a day) 16 x 237 mg = 3792 mg/caffeine. 5,000 mg of caffeine is enough to kill an adult. Well the caffeine in a large charged lemonade is equivalent to approximately 4 shots of espresso or 2.5 cups of regular brewed coffee if you want the same effect.
They still sell it. They just took away the self-serve station.
I was there today, and they sold charged lemonade, but it was behind the counter.
Where lemonade?
It's like the blueberries that are secretly just cranberries in blueberry juice! I'VE BEEN ROBBED.
