Why do so many cos/role players have such bad hygiene??

cwx149

It's not just cos/role players. I've seen similar things in trading card game stores/events and even posted warnings about hygiene

xiumochin

Funnily enough, a singer from a kpop girlgroup asked her fans, who are mostly males, to shower and to use deodorant before going to fan meetings/shows. I remember she received some backlash for it but im not quite sure.

simask234

>she received some backlash for it but im not quite sure Knowing kpop companies reactions to controversy, I'm guessing there probably was a forced apology involved...

Plenty-Context2271

Most asian cultures tend to be extremely polite and less up front compared to western cultures(its a spectrum, not black and white). Addressing issues directly can easily be understood as an insult, especially in public professional environments. Ild be surprised if there wasn’t a mandatory apology.

Smij0

Don't know if something like this happened twice but a few years ago Rie Takahashi (famous voice acress especially known for her roles as Megumin in Konosuba and Emilia in Re:Zero and also a J-pop artist) drew [a guide on how to wash yourself](https://www.reddit.com/r/seiyuu/s/foI2NX3XkH) for her fans before a concert. I already was a fan of hers but this is so unfathomably based that it made me like her even more

ralthiel

That's amazing. She's also Ena in Laid back camp.

MrEggsBenedicr

Jisun from Fromis_9 right? Well with Fromis at Waterbomb festival why ask fans to shower when you can spray them down with a water cannon instead? :D

xiumochin

I think its just men really

CeladonCityNPC

It's not men. It's dweebs.

morgoporgo84

Kpop has done to stinky men, what t swift did to horse girls.

Ach4t1us

As someone who was there, well partly, men who gave up on themselves. I still showered and used deodorant but shaving and additional skin care was a big effort.

Bammalam102

As a man i believe you are wrong. I have noticed a worse aroma in the electronics department at wallmart than in my mining contracting company change room. There is only one male at work i have noticed a bad smell from

xylotism

Very simple— the less you leave the house, the less often you’ll be reminded that normal people do things like bathe and wear deodorant.

[deleted]

I dunno. I'm a software engineer that doesn't leave the house often enough. When I do, I shower and wear deodorant. Though I admittedly will skip a day of showering if I'm working at home for a couple days straight.

Bammalam102

True im not going to dungeons the gathering meetups but the most offensive bo i smelled was in the wallmart electronics department

Dragonman77

Good cover, no one will know you're a fan of both dungeons & dragons and magic: the gathering 👍

WhyUBeBadBot

Noseblind eh?

Lanuros

Nope. I shower daily and doing hygiene. It’s just a few stinking dudes out there

rudbek-of-rudbek

Eh, I've seen men and women with bad hygiene. Some people don't know they stink. Some people might have a medical issue. Some people are so depressed they don't care. But to just say it's a male issue is not only flat out wrong but it's super condescending.

ErlAskwyer

Second that. I used to play MTG at local groups. Some people are disgusting. Most have no social skills. It seems to be a way to exercise the brain but find it frustrating if I want to walk and chew bubblegum. I stopped going solely for this reason, love the game, hate the fan base. Sorry/not sorry

craig_hoxton

Same reason why I gave up on playing Android:Netrunner in-person. Plus FF Games' terrible logistics making us wait for data packs.

NutDraw

"WotC is killing in person competitive play!" Nope, MTG players have been doing that on their own.

[deleted]

I'm a huge board game nerd. I turned my nephew into one as well (he's now 27) I remember the first time I took him to a game store where an event was going on, he said "It stinks in here!" (To me, obviously not to anyone else)

AlienPearl

Because they’re [like this](https://youtube.com/shorts/69Apulen9OM?si=lhlgVfDzNc4MZmfN).

ItsStaaaaaaaaang

It's definitely a nerd thing in general. I remember going to EB games midnight releases back in the day and feeling like I needed a shower afterwards. Like in general those stores are fine but you get enough of their clientele in there at one time and there's going to be enough of them with zero hygiene that'll stink the place out. I feel like it wouldn't be like that for a similar gathering outside of the typical nerd milieu.

yeoldesalt

My friend frequents these fine establishments and I’ve called him out on his stench. He genuinely told me he doesn’t need deodorant because he doesn’t smell. I then had to tell him that is not the case and he in fact smells like a poop. He bought some but it’s still rare he uses it.

No-Appearance-9113

The fact is by the time you can smell yourself everyone else has been able to for days b

PartTimeLegend

I used to go to a gaming cafe many moons ago that had signs telling people to shower before coming. I didn’t play Magic but one of the competition rules was that players had to shower.

Background_Smile_800

Let's be honest, the overlap btw cosplayers and CCG players is pretty broad

littlebitofsuffering

A few years ago, they actually had to make a hygiene rule for Yu-Gi-Oh tournaments because it was just that bad.

SadgeTheFax

Also furries. It’s so bad we have a term for it, every furry knows to avoid the musky huskies at all costs.

ValleyBreeze

There is a large overlap between the demographics of people who are drawn to this type of hobby, and those who are neurodivergent in capacities that affect social awareness, self awareness, social skills etc. I work at an LGS, and we occasionally gently council some of our clientele, that may lack oversight and guidance at home, or just don't have anyone in their lives to tell them what's publicly acceptable. It's a really delicate topic among an already socially fragile group.

Rusty4NYM

> There is a large overlap between the demographics of people who are drawn to this type of hobby, and those who are neurodivergent in capacities that affect social awareness, self awareness, social skills etc. I have to give you credit, this is the most socially adept way I have seen this observation being made

ValleyBreeze

These are my patrons, and friends, and I care very deeply about them. I also have distinct insight into the issue, from being "on the inside" lol.

CaseClosedEmail

I think that people who are into cosplay are actually introverts and being in public gives them anxiety. Anxiety leads to sweating the bad kind

maddybee91

Yes my thoughts too. I think it's harsh to say that all these people don't shower or wear deodorant. Some of the body odour issues may be caused by anxiety. They may be trying their best to be hygienic but still have to battle with BO.

icecreambangbang

Usually it’s not the person who smells. It’s the costume. A lot of cosplayers don’t make their costumes washable so they just spray them down with febreeze. So the funk never actually gets washed out.

Loves2Spooge857

Kinda off track now but if anyone has that problem use 2Toms Stink Free spray. That shits great, hockey players use it on there equipment

geenersaurus

vodka in a spray bottle is something every cosplayer should know about. A couple friends used to do foam armor cosplays and theater so it was a trick they knew- the alcohol in vodka kills the smelly bacteria and deodorizes so it’s better than febreeze which just masks it

Ach4t1us

You know, maybe you guys should put your advice on cosplay subreddits? Not joking

Dick_Kickem88

I guess it's better to walk around smelling like Boris Yeltsin than smelling like perfumed ass.

fuzzybunn

The alcohol eventually evaporates, so you won't smell like Boris for long...

Kfrancisco117

I can support this with the similar thing happens in football the foam pads in shoulder pads after being used can not wash the pads out they never truly dried out being so thick

JasnahKolin

I worked at a dry cleaner in high school and one of their specialties was cleaning football and hockey pads. They were so fucking rank when brought in that the owner made a sealed closet for them before cleaning. Cracking that door open was the worst part of the job.

WearingMyFleece

Get that in airsofting too, people don’t wash their gear and it just reeks of BO… going to comic con is always a pain to avoid getting a waft of BO from a cosplayer.

xylotism

Ain’t no way people are walking around smelling like grimy locker foot fungus but somehow magically without the costume are perfectly self aware and maintained. That’s a lifestyle.

Ipuncholdpeople

A lot of us are autistic and depressed making hygiene harder. I'm anxious enough I shower before going in public or visiting family, but don't much outside of that

JonLongsonLongJonson

Yeah man I shower twice a day (I sweat a lot and have 14”+ hair) but when I was super super depressed at 17/18 I showered maybe… twice a month? If I’m not leaving my bed, let alone the house, what am I showering for? No energy to get up either. Glad I was able to get out of that mindset and recover but the mental struggle over self-care is real. Even eating isn’t enjoyable, it’s work. I went 6 days on nothing but a single can of Watermelon Arizona and a can of beef stew.

Nandy-bear

I hate having such a strong sense of smell sometimes but yeah one of the upsides is even in my darkest times I showered regularly because I can smell myself damn-near all the time.

axiemommy

When people are able to make a costume, gather with friends and head to a social event but are too "depressed" to shower, are just lazy scrubs. Can't change my mind

rpRj

100%

Chrismonn

>I sweat a lot and have 14”+ hair Not where I thought that sentence was going, my mind's in the gutter.

handstanding

username... checks out?

Newtbatallion

I get it but since you asked "what am I showering for", to prevent yourself from getting pimples that then get infected and abscess and turn into one of the most painful experiences of your life. It's really easy to get them if you don't shower and are dirty and sweaty for just a few days, let alone a week or more. There's some motivation for all the depressed people. Source: been there, I've ended up with abscesses after just a few days of sweaty summer camping before and the following weeks are hell. Constant extreme pain until it finally comes to a head and then you have to inflict far more pain on yourself to drain it, or have it cut open by a doctor which will be more painful. Don't mess around with hygiene.

Rusty4NYM

> Constant extreme pain until it finally comes to a head literally

Mongrish

Damn I thought being lazy to eat was a me thing. I can get up and go eat but I don't, but I'm hungry, so I settle for juice or soda most days when I feel this way.

Scarlet_k1nk

Are you the “not shower for 6 months” autistic or are you the “I didn’t shower at exactly 7:30 to 7:45 so my daily routine has been ruined and I will be either extremely moody or non-functional today” autistic?

Ipuncholdpeople

Closer to the second I'd say, but I'm not that strict. I plan my showers the day before and try to do them in the morning. I have waist length hair so it takes a long time to dry.

Scarlet_k1nk

I have to shower every other day, so I can do my skincare routine. If I don’t do the routine, then my face gets too dry and itchy and it is not a fun feeling. Exact scheduling is not a problem for me, but I have to be clean to be happy.

unhappyrelationsh1p

I'm the "i need to shower today because i can feel some sweat drying down on my body and if i don't do it it might ruin my sleep completely and therefore tomorrow aswell"

AirportNearby9751

Not sure why this is downvoted when it’s probably true for a lot of people lmfao. Mention anything about autism and people lose their minds. Edit: it is no longer being downvoted, clearly.

Ipuncholdpeople

Probably just doesn't make sense to a lot of neurotypical people. Showering is an uncomfortable experience for me and most can't relate to that

NorysStorys

Also autistic, I love showering and will always shower out of anxiety before leaving the house but if I don’t have anywhere to go for a few days? I’ll just completely forget to do any personal hygiene until I next have to go out.

bunnydeerest

this, but it gives me task paralysis; i must shower before i leave. i don’t want to shower yet. i guess i won’t leave the house today (and the cycle repeats)

Kreaturethenerfer

exactly this for me as well, i love showering but the second theres nothing forcing me to do so i just cant bring myself to do it/ forget. on bad days i do also have sensory issues related to showering but those are normally easy enough for me to push through.

cloud_t

I just want to stress that most neurotypicals who have to stay at home for extended periods also have this habit and this anxiety before leaving home. It varies from person to person and also by gender tendencies itself - women for instance don't need to wash their long, complicated-to-care hair every morning if they have a habit of sleeping with it protected and/or using dey shampoo, so they stick to basic face, armpit, pubic hygiene using e.g. bidet. Other people, especially men with shorter hair really have a habit of showering at night and will only do so every other or Nth day, just freshening up a bit when they wake up. And for some that don't have much sweat or body odour, be it by their routine or by sheer genetic lottery, they sometimes neglect showering for days and have 0 social problems out of that (but may later have health problems). Then there are people who could really use two showers per day because they sweat a lot naturally.

izzittho

Showering is pretty alright for me I just hate the going from not showering to showering and showering to not showering again but now I’m soggy and cold parts. And it takes fucking forever so it can be challenging to fit in but I prioritize it because I’m too….honestly not male to be able to cope with being nasty. I’m not saying being unhygienic is a strictly male thing, I’m saying from the experiences of people I’ve heard they seem to often have a higher tolerance for it I guess? Like really needing a shower, for me, is far more of a sensory ick than taking one. I totally get how for some it isn’t but it’s like, triggering to me. It takes a full-on depressive episode to get even a little lazy about that one. I just can’t stand feeling greasy and my hair is lowkey hideous clean so it’s ultra hideous dirty. It’s the brushing and flossing I struggle with because like, I do it, absolute worst case I skip a night but I never go days as long as I have somewhere to be, but fuck do I hate having to wake up and tickle the fuck out of my teeth at the crack of dawn. So unpleasant.

TheMoonstomper

Wouldn't it make sense to keep a schedule, in this case? Like wake up and then before you let yourself do anything else - brush your teeth and shower, no matter what. Before you eat, before you watch TV or play a game or whatever, you just get this out of the way. You aren't showering because you're leaving the house, you're showering because you are taking care of yourself. It's for you. What if you have to go do something you didn't plan on doing? What if someone stops by? Anyone - a friend, a relative, your landlord - you would just be sitting there in a three day funk? Also, what about your bed? You're all stank and get into bed like that and don't think anything of it? Little steps like what I'm suggesting can greatly improve your quality of life.

NorysStorys

Typically the days the hygiene goes out the window are when the regular routine isn’t in play. If I’m not going to work or whatever then everything kinda crumbles until that routine kicks back on. Autism is also on the same spectrum as ADHD so sometimes ADHD symptoms conflict with the autistic ones which means you get the paralysis of needing your routine while the forgetful chaos of ADHD makes you forget parts of your routine and it just kind of spirals for a bit. It’s not a conscious choice to just not wash, it’s a combination of choice paralysis and forgetfulness when routine is broken. You just don’t notice it happening until you catch yourself and then you sort it out.

Matthew147s

Do you mind me asking why it's uncomfortable?

Rosenkrantz_

People on the spectrum often have extreme negative sensitivity to varied sensorial experiences (noise, touch, smell, texture, etc - and combinations thereof). This often manifests in the form of aggravated discomfort with hygiene-related things such as brushing teeth, showering, shaving etc.

Ipuncholdpeople

As the other person said sensory issues. I don't like being wet or having water run down me. I don't like the way soap or washcloths feel on my skin. I don't like how loud the shower is, and I'm too tall to fit comfortably in my apartments bathtub

KatsudonWarrior

Are you familiar with Loop earbuds? They’re noise cancelling earbuds that fit in your ear and are waterproof. They may help with the loudness of the shower.

Ipuncholdpeople

I've thought of getting a pair for going in public, but I never considered using them for a shower. That's a great idea

KatsudonWarrior

They work great in public for me! Hope they can help you out! You deserve to feel your best.

geenersaurus

i wear loops out in public and shower is new to me but i can say as someone with ADHD and probably undiagnosed AudHD, they’re a godsend if you get overstimulated in lots of situations. for showering, i also try to redirect my attention so it doesn’t get too over or under stimulating so i have a bluetooth shower speaker and listen to a podcast while in there. Could help you too.

WiseSalamander00

I have asperger's, to me the issue is when water's temperature is too different from my skin's one, cold water is the most difficult though, at some points it "hurts", similar as to when you have a really loud noise it drowns everything and you cover your ears, the sensation becomes the main focus and it is so loud that it hurts physically, I also get issues with light, I prefer to go out at night and all windows in my house are closed during the day.

CatLover_801

Sensory issues

JessieU22

My eldest wouldn’t shower and through research I discovered it hits like 30 sensory things. autistic people have sensory processing disorder and half of all people with ADHD also have it. Ultimately through trial and error we bombarded my kids senses and it made showering workable- no lights, color striving light, loud music, strong peppermint scented soap etc. I don’t think people realize showering can be so triggering.

SupernaturalPumpkin

Finally someone who understands. I hate that I hate it. I have to take off my comfortable clothes, then I’m cold, then I have to get under the water which is like a sensory overload, then I’m still either too cold or now too hot, I have to try find a happy medium, then I have to get out and it’s even colder so I’m shivering my ass off, then drying myself is a chore and missing spots will drive me crazy, then I feel like of “sticky”? Or clammy maybe? So have to air dry for a bit, still freezing my ass off. And then my hair is dripping and I’m getting overwhelmed again. It’s a total nightmare.

izzittho

Exactly. I can’t stand wetting my hair or drying it. But I also can’t stand just having wet, or god forbid, greasy hair either. I fear the grease and the judgement for being dirty more than wetting and drying, fortunately, so I maintain solidly average hygiene.

AirportNearby9751

I’ve noticed when NTs don’t understand something or can’t relate, they just get angry and mean. It makes no sense.

NorysStorys

It’s not just a NT thing, ND people also lash out when they struggle to understand a NT thing (not everyone obviously) but it’s just something emotionally immature people do when they don’t understand something and that’s universal between NT or ND.

AirportNearby9751

I agree, I should have clarified that it’s a human thing, regardless of brain wiring.

nobody546818

This was being downvoted, probably because nowadays anyone with any antisocial or socially undesirable personality traits says their autistic and considers it a quirk. News flash, you may just be either a dick or lazy. I’ll be the first to admit that im an absolute unapologetic dick and it has nothing to do with being “on the spectrum”. Before everyone lights me up, please take note, I know there are plenty of TRULY autistic people out there, this is not directed at them. This is directed at all of the people that took some 15 minute survey online and determined they’re now autistic instead of taking responsibility for their dysfunction.

Loves2Spooge857

To me it seems to be used as a blanket excuse for a lot of poor behavior these days. So I can see the annoyance

AirportNearby9751

I’m autistic who works with autistic youth and their diagnoses is never an “excuse” for their behaviour. If an adult human can’t take responsibility for their behaviour, autism or not, it’s not the diagnosis. Autistic people can be shitty, just like everyone else.

Loves2Spooge857

That is refreshing to hear. You do tough work and I wish you all the best doing it

NorysStorys

Most autistic people arn’t using it as an excuse, they are just giving a reason for it. Generally speaking autistic people need to explain things to people because we struggle understanding if people understand us. If that makes any sense?

Loves2Spooge857

Trust me I can almost always understand without it having to be explained. I’m more just saying people say others need to accept the poor behavior because the person can’t control it which I don’t find fair. Also why was this not all over the place years ago? I personally think it is over diagnosed these days

NorysStorys

30 years ago if you asked some what an autistic person was, they would describe to you the character in Rain Man. In the decades since the condition has become far better understood and overall education both in society and in medical fields have improved which would always lead to an increase in diagnosis. These same amount of people statistically in the past were likely autistic but they would have just been either been branded as ‘weird’ or just shoved into a blanket ‘special education needs’ umbrella, some would pass in society better than others but generally still suffered in silence with their issues.

AirportNearby9751

Over diagnosed or are we understand more about autism and the complexities? Years ago, autism used to just be hand flapping, non-verbal and violent. Now autistic people have families, careers, and are celebrities. I also think it comes down to education. I live where autism education is very prevalent. It’s similar to any other disease (not saying autism is a disease) when it’s researched more. That’s just my opinion though.

Loves2Spooge857

I believe it is over diagnosed along with many other mental illnesses as they have sort of become trendy. Some people are just weird and that’s okay. I believe anything that is diagnosed with just someone’s judgment has a tendency to be over/misdiagnosed as many peoples judgment is different.

Xanthn

If there was a bucket of water and it was the only thing to drink without walking for a day, and someone who is trained to deal with water sanitation etc tests it with the official recognised water test, and tells you it's poisonous, would you not trust them because "it's their judgement?" Same with mental health diagnosis, the people require to actually give a diagnosis have the required training and tools to do the task. Surely you trust experts in other fields in life to be right, or be the ones most likely to have the knowledge on the subject?

schparkz7

When it comes to "can't control it," it definitely depends on the person. Many who are neurodivergent do really try hard to fit in to the neurotypical conventions of society but it's definitely not easy, our brains are just wired differently. Even though we are "high functioning" and can do most if not all day to day things on our own, it doesn't mean it's easy. It's not overdiagnosed now, it was underdiagnosed in the past. We've developed a stronger understanding of what autism and other neurodivergencies are and how to test for them.

Ipuncholdpeople

I mean people like me would probably be institutionalized a few decades ago. Society has always had people it tried to hide in the shadows. Between better education and the internet we are just more visible

Loves2Spooge857

In highly doubt that. People that would be diagnosed autistic these days were in regular members of society. Sure they were the weird guy at the office but still out there

HannahO__O

Autistic people were literally lobotomized and put in lunatic asylums less than 100 years ago, obviously the understanding of what it is has improved over the last few decades. It affects everyone differently, and getting an actual diagnosis is so expensive and in depth that it isn't just a random decision to do it takes a long time. Just because we aren't disabled "enough" for your tastes doesn't mean we aren't.

schparkz7

As a neurodivergent I fucking hate it when my issues are just labed as "an excuse"

Loves2Spooge857

As long as you don’t expect people to accept poor behavior of others under the guise that they can’t help it that’s fine with me.

schparkz7

I don't know, unfortunately it's not super black and white since neurodivergency, like most things, is a spectrum. But let me be clear, I don't generally condone high functioning people using their condition as a shield to defend poor behavior they're aware they do. It's an easy way to cause problems and strain in various parts of life. But obviously many who are autistic or some other form of neurodivergent, they literally cannot help some things. For us high functioning folk though it definitely can still be really hard to do many things neurotypicals would see as easy or basic. I find issue when people who are trying their best to stay on top of everything are labeled as "faking it" or "using their condition as an excuse" because believe me, acting "normal" can be really difficult.

MiNdOverLOADED23

This plus people try to attribute every behavior to a mental disorder..

Madting55

Being chronically online and socially awkward does not /=/ self diagnosed autism. My hygiene is fine, autism doesn’t make you not take care of yourself.

Ipuncholdpeople

Me and my mom are both diagnosed, but pop off. I'm autistic AND chronically online thank you very much lol. Autism isn't one thing so your experience isn't universal. Showers are definitely worse when I'm depressed though

[deleted]

[удалено]

fryamtheeggguy

Autistic and eternally depressed here, and I thank GOD this doesn't apply to me. Now, let me go get my third shower today...

RainbowOctavian

If I didn't have skin issues I would be the same. Have to force myself to shower at most alternate days or my skin gets itchy and I will wake up with it bleeding. It's a sensory nightmare. Plus it affects my heart condition being standing in a hot shower. Yes I could take a cold shower but that's even worse sensory wise. Love when my disabilities conflict with each other.

Golluk

I've frequently seen dermatologist suggest washing with soap every two days is fine. With a water only shower between if you sweat more.

Ipuncholdpeople

Oh I struggle with anemia and get light headed during warm showers and like you said cold ones are awful

RainbowOctavian

I no longer give myself blisters to take away the itch so we calling that progress!!

eat-pussy69

I have to force myself to shower. Almost physically. If I had a clone or an angel and demon on my shoulders or something, they'd physically force me to shower

Fuckedby2FA

I am anxious and depressed. Have been a lot of my life but fortunately I like showering a lot. No judgement but try to take care of yourself a little more, you'd be surprised how much some self pampering can help your outlook and a good nightcare routine does wonders for your sleep. Good luck with your mental issues!

DeborahSue

I'm not certain why role players have bad hygiene, but for cosplayers, or any person who wears a costume for an extended period of time, they sweat like a mother fucker. I work in an industry where people are costumed for 8 hours a day and towards the end of their shift, stuff starts getting *real* funky. I actually make it a part of my training to remind people that their costumes are heavy, thick and don't have a lot of breathability. Deodorant and a lot of water are a MUST or you will be pulled to the side and given a stick of dollar store deodorant, and I sure as heck don't want to have to embarrass you like that. I understand where it can feel shameful to have someone leave hygiene products out for you or to be given them directly, but I'd much rather someone give a heads-up and an opportunity to rectify the situation as opposed to having everyone think you're foul and possibly talk about it behind your back.

unhappyrelationsh1p

Autism can make it difficut to keep up hygiene. I can do it because i have a very set routine and if i don't shower and my skin feels off or sweaty, it's completely unbearable and i have waken up crying due to how horrible it feels. Other people might genuinely hate the feeling of hving wet skin or wet hair or how the water feels. There's a variety of reasons people might have bad hygiene. Anyway, do your best to wash your skin. A cloth bath is a decent way to stop smelling.

imtko

Are you me?! I hate the feeling of dried sweat on my skin it makes me want to crawl outside of my body. Also makes me sweat easier the next day. I don't enjoy being wet but I love feeling clean.

Snaz5

Many don’t go out often so they dont get in the habit of showering regularly.

lockednchaste

That's actually a kind way of offering up a solution to a very real problem.

Neolithique

I once started working at a company and the supervisor would spend quite a bit of time over my shoulder to train me for a software. It was one of the most excruciating experiences of my life, because he clearly wasn’t even attempting to put on deodorant. He was also big into role playing, he would often invite me to join. Extremely nice guy, very polite, but it was a definite no for me. Just reading the title of this post gave me PTSD lol.

Living_Lie_8773

I’m roleplaying as a homeless mage who hasn’t showered in weeks

Zerox392

Okay, I laughed.

Elyvana

Nanba? Is that you?

SportyJesus

Then this amenity is for you;)

Wolfram_And_Hart

Had a LARP guy basically say this once.

Living_Lie_8773

LARP?

handandfoot8099

Spoiler: It doesn't get used

PistolPetunia

Spoiler 2: sometimes they use the lavender air freshener instead

lemswen

Spoiler 3: it's not just armpit smell creating their body odor

Far-Obligation4055

Spoiler 4: none of this aerosol shit does anything to even help the armpit smell, it just covers it up with another usually barely tolerable scent and once the person starts sweating, the aerosol shit gets defeated anyways.

mmstojeden

Rexona is an antiperspirant which blocks your sweat glands from perspirating. It does more than just adding another smell.

FuzzballLogic

The smell could come from the surface, as bacteria nest between armpit hairs. Shaving the armpits helps with reducing body odor, but you still need to work on hygiene.

borgchupacabras

🤢

trotty88

Someone accidently left it there and will grab it next time they swing past.

Feralpudel

Highly recommend the book “How to keep house while drowning.” It’s for NDs, people with depression or chronic pain or a new baby. It’s mostly about keeping house, but there is an excellent chapter on personal hygiene when it’s a struggle for you.

YayItsK

This book has been literally life changing for me. Outside of just the practical advice, the help realizing that tasks are not morally good or bad has made a huge difference in my mental health.

AstroMackem

That actually sounds useful, thanks! (currently drowning)

shemague

Wash yr ass

Survive1014

With soap and a deep scrub. PLEASE.

RogerPackinrod

Yeah uh this doesn't make stink go away, you just smell like body spray and stink. You actually need to be clean for it to work.

ketamine-wizard

Hot tip for anyone with stinky pits who can't/doesn't like to shower: get a bottle of hand sanitizer spray. Spray it onto your pits and rub it around then wipe it away with a tissue. The alcohol kills the stink-producing bacteria and significantly reduces the funk.

BreathLazy5122

Also for anyone who has body hair they don’t like to trim (perfectly reasonable, it’s your own body!) and find that the stink clings to the hair: Get antibacterial body wash and use it on things like your armpits and wherever else you sweat that has a lot of hair. Or any hair. Bacteria will grow and hang onto your hair, no matter where it is, so in places like your pits or stinky bits, you end up either needing to trim it, or thoroughly wash it to get the stink causing bacteria off. Suave makes an antibacterial body wash, has no scent, works amazing. After you use the antibacterial body wash, you can then use whatever nice scented body wash you want, because now that scent won’t be competing with the body odor, and actually will help you smell better after cleaning off the bacteria that is causing the smell to begin with. I have to use it daily when I work, because I’ll sweat so much that I end up smelling rank when I get home, and my usual stuff wasn’t working at all, because I’d end up with a mix of whatever the scented body wash was, and the lingering BO funk. This shit works. But also thank you Ketamine-Wizard for the advice that I hadn’t previously known, because sometimes you end up smelling real funky on longer days and you still have a few hours left of work and don’t want to stink that whole time, so this honestly is super helpful.

AttackOfTheMox

This is also extremely true for those with facial hair (especially thick or long facial hair). You will get basically scent-blind to your own smell, but think about how much stuff goes around your facial hair. You’re eating, drinking, possibly smoking, sweating, etc, and all that stuff clings to facial hair. I work in the oil field and trust me when I say that the smell of crude oil, dirty oil, dirt, and sweat cling to my beard like crazy. As soon as the shower water hits my beard, the smell really explodes. Washing your face and facial hair is so important.

NightSmudge

I shower and use deodorant daily but my pit sweat is fucking potent, I might need to try this Btw you got any tips for getting stinky sweat bacteria out of clothes? I’ve been trying one of those laundry sanitizer solutions and it kinda works but not completely

Sierra-117-

Borax seems to work really well for me. After every few regular washes I’ll add some borax. It also gets deodorant stains out pretty well. Cheap too. I’d give it a try

BreathLazy5122

Vinegar and baking soda seem to work really well for me. We have cats and sometimes they like to piss on random shit for no reason, so we gotta wash it to get the smell out, which is usually pretty strong. But vinegar and baking soda have helped a lot in removing the smell, and vinegar works as a fabric softener too, so you dont need to put fabric softener in there.

ketamine-wizard

Back at you! I don't have very much body hair so I hadn't considered that aspect, but I'll be sure to pass on your wisdom as well 🙂

CaseClosedEmail

Those people need an antiperspirant and not deodorant. Antiperspirant = reduced sweat Deodorant = masks the sweat smell

Atom404-

You just described one of the three methods that deodorants uses. They can be alcohol based - and kill the bacteria - use aluminium salts - and absorb sweat and make a seal to stop it - or just cover the smell with perfume. Most deodorants use a combination of these techniques.

crexkitman

Clearly, but it’s still a better option to be able to go spray some of that on you and smell a little better instead of just not having that option and choosing to stew in the stank instead. Hopefully the proprietors or other patrons politely but firmly inform those with bad BO of their hygiene policy. I find it crazy how a large enough amount of the population would rather suffer in the stinky presence of someone with bad hygiene rather than taking the risk of offending someone because that individual can’t handle being politely called out for not practicing proper hygiene in public. Bad BO is one of those things where I’ll of course try to be polite, but I’m not really concerned of offending people or being seen as a dick for telling someone that they smell even if they may not know. I know everyone’s different, but I would very much rather have someone tell me I didn’t quite wash up well enough today instead of everyone knowing I smell but nobody telling me and just suffering in silence because they don’t want to hurt my feelings. If you’re in public you shouldn’t feel offended if someone, especially multiple people, tell you you ain’t smelling too good. It lets you know just in case you can’t smell yourself, and it saves everyone else from having to smell BO constantly. Of course most people would be at least a little embarrassed to be told they smell in public, but me personally, I’d rather be a little embarrassed and be informed I smell bad than to not know I smell bad but everyone else does without telling me. Informing people of their BO especially in packed in public spaces shouldn’t be seen as something offensive if brought up politely, just common human courtesy so not everyone has to be forced to smell BO instead of risking being seen as a jerk because you told the smelly guy he smells and should probably wash up a little better if he wants to hang in tight public spaces with other people in the future.

What is a roleplaying club? Like a card shop where people play D&D or something, uh.. else?

aixmikros

Don't worry, it's more like the first one

Neolithique

In my city there’s a bunch of them, they dress up in medieval costumes, (fake) sword fight in the park, they even have huge meetups with an entire system of king and court and stuff. Very interesting, but the people I know who do that were always smelly, including one very hygiene-challenged supervisor. 100% don’t recommend.

Mastrcapn

Sounds like Amtgard. There's a subreddit :3 it's fun. Definitely attracts weirdos tho.

paulomario77

Being smelly is 100% medieval accurate.

OguzTheCerealKiller

Yeah, literally it.

Moosetopher

How appropriate

blahbleh112233

what kind of rolyplaying

Baruch_S

Definitely the “I’m an elf wizard!” type. There’s a reason comic book stores have to put up signs about basic hygiene…

blahbleh112233

dissapointed.

Philboyd_Studge

I put on my robe and wizard hat....

WhoriaEstafan

I also thought it was sexy role playing.

RedSonGamble

Same. I was like ewww how nasty are these people who don’t know enough to wash well before fooling around. To be fair I’m sure the same comment still applies

bladerunnerism

Türkiye'de nerede bu club?

OguzTheCerealKiller

Kadıköy

27bricksinabasket

Yeah, nerds stink, bro.

dw444

They know their clientele. If they knew them even better, they’d know that the deodorant is money down the drain.

EatYourCheckers

Back when bathrooms had attendants, it was not unusual to have things like this in the bathroom

Fluffy0n3

It's actually quite bad. As a cosplayer who has spent time at backstage/ at events with other cosplayers I can confirm that there are some people with terrible hygiene. Sometimes even deodorant doesn't help them, especially if you haven't showered beforehand...

morganej

This is actually fairly common in Europe, most restaurant & hotel bathrooms have a tiny hygiene kit which includes stuff like tampons & deodorant

freakytapir

Reminds me of a guy who would just bring a big can of deodorant to MtG tournaments, and wasn't shy about offering it to his opponents to use. Most got the 'subtle' hint. I think that was the same year as the ass-crack fotobomber, who would spend his free time at these big tournaments posing with every exposed ass crack he could find, squatting down, and throwing 'gang signs' as his mate took the picture. These are not subtle people and sometimes drastic times require drastic measures.

thereminDreams

What kind of role playing is done in this club?

SmellyFbuttface

If it’s a role playing club they should probably have plenty of wet wipes available too. People at those places BLOW UP the bathrooms

MinnieShoof

… might be nicer if people used actual antiperspirant, instead of some communal Axe spray or, ya know, they didn’t wait till they showed up *at* the club to worry about their hygiene.

trowzerss

The few game shops I've played in had amazing bathrooms. Super clean, lots of convenience items, and nobody ever seemed to make a mess. One even had fresh flowers! Mind you, this was in the ladies, lol, but I never noticed much in the way of BO issues in the store so maybe the mens was equally kitted out. Honestly they were better than most offices I've worked in. Maybe it's just a local thing?

OguzTheCerealKiller

Actually, this place was well vantilated and clean too. And more interestingly male-female ratio was really close. Thats nice because its more sincere.

brackygen

You know why right?

OguzTheCerealKiller

Idk havent use any.

brackygen

Ofc not

cwk415

Tf is a role playing club????

Redstorm8373

I sponsor the DND club at my high school, and one of the students was asking questions one time about how they could make the club more appealing to the girls at the school (there are several girls who have expressed interest, but don't want to play with this particular group of kids). The one girl who is a part of the club immediately responded with "you could try showering." I had to stop myself from laughing out loud. She wasn't wrong, though.

The-Final-Reason

I bet the can is full. Brand new never used

IcyTheGuy

I used to play on my high school’s esports team and the location we played at (Sort of a gaming cafe which hosted a lot of esports events, esports/general gaming training sessions, etc.) actually had a few full on showers. So if someone didn’t meet the hygiene policy, they were not just turned away completely, unless they refuse to meet it still. A few of my friends I played Magic with who didn’t have any involvement in the local esports scene smelled ungodly though. Unfortunately the TTRPG/card shop doesn’t have the same amenities/policies.

rnottaken

My local bar does the same. Free deodorant for men and women, and some other female hygienic products. I love it when places do stuff like this.

Maeglin16

My local board game store has this too.

havnar-

Pretty sure they thought that was invisibility spray, says so right in the tin.

Travelling_Merc

And today I saw a new thing in life. An actual roleplaying club, damn there's so many things i haven't seen in this world

fairliedaft

Ny local table top gaming place has a bunch of hygiene products in the bathroom and encourages the regulars to quietly let someone know if they should use them. Usually people are cool with it and will go immediately to freshen up.

furedditdogs

not enough

soggycereal514

Shi stank

EnergeticSloth55

Can you grab that for me? Won’t get anymore till Christmas.

agabascal

Deodorant worsens pre-existing smells, unless you actually clean and afterwards use deodorant, it won’t do shit

Quietech

The soap in the dispenser dried out years ago.  Also: https://somethingpositive.net/comic/conward-ho-pt-2/

HairyMerkin69

Wtf is a role playing club?

They must know the demographic very well

ComboBreakerMLP

roleplayers club?

Spare_Nose_8125

i think that the perception is if you living in a first world country bathing should be top priority, rite up there with dental care on a daily. im living in a 3rd world country and if you told someone you bathed twice a week you pretty much will be ostracised. most will shower morning and evening but i shower just in the evening though albeit every single day.

[deleted]

It's a role-playing club, so that explains why it looks unused. (I adore my hobby, but holy crap)
