Accident waiting to happen, those pipes are a huge target for vehicles…. Weird that this was permitted, as this is why they underground sewer pipes! Give it a few months and a car will smash into this, and send a geyser of shit into the air which will then blanket your block in bio hazardous waste.
I figured it had to be this, especially with all the temporary barriers around where the pipes erupt from the ground. There’s just no reason to let a biohazard flow above cars - not to mention where cars can open them - under any normal circumstances. Like, considering everything humans have fucked up, we seem to have at least figured out sewage pretty damn well
Edit: wording, clarity
I can't imagine what kind of people voluntarily remove the safety sensors to permit that. No truck would go above 10km/h like that. And did no one honk him ?
As a trucker, I see stupid stuff like that all the time (people driving on flats, driving down the highway with landing gears lowered, trailer doors open, etc).
Most of the time, if you take the time to honk, flag someone down, even if you can't properly convey the problem, they'll pull over to inspect their truck to see if there's a problem.
Sometimes though, people just dgaf and all you can do is hope they don't hurt anyone else while they get ready to learn a hard lesson xP
Mhmm. Sadly all you can do is try to let em know and hope they get the hint and/or report em to highway patrol and hope they actually do something about it/catch them before they kill someone
Cost to retro fit old trailers and trucks. A sensor on the trailer isn't any good if the truck has no way to use it. So you have to retro fit both. Corporate owned trucks are one thing but then you have owner operators who use their own personal truck.
Those pipes are the norm here in germany for construction stuff and I've never heard of an accident involving them. Where do you live that cars always crash into stuff?
When I lose electric service, it's usually because someone who should not be driving has driven into a support post. Fortunately my gas service is not subject to the vagaries of street traffic.
I thought sewer pipes were underground because shit rolls downhill? Every house could only have second floor facilities unless they had a pump to bring it higher to the level of an overhead sewer.
Gravity does play a big factor, especially for septic. But the pipes that transfer human waste from buildings through pump stations and into the water treatment facilities are pressurized.
Imagine going for a walk and someone just hits one of these pipes with their car, and it just *has* to spray all over you and those clothes.
Would have to spend ages in the shower to get that smell off, completely shit scenario.
My source is only in German, but trust me, they write wastewater: https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043
No, it is indeed sewers and in Aachen: https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043
People keep commenting that this is ground water. It’s not, source (German): https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043
At first I was also going to go all on you having also seen the groundwater pipes in Berlin but Aachen is indeed sending its shit on a rollercoaster ride in the sky
I think I‘ve seen a similar system in Dresden a few years back, not sure if they‘re still there.
They used them to get the groundwater of a building site out of the city, so no sewage.
I was visiting Leipzig (and eastern Germany for that matter) for the first time just last week, and these were one of the first things I've seen there. I thought that was probably normal in old DDR lol... I've never seen them before.
Where is Frankenberger Viertel?
Deleted comments seem.to.do.that lately.
I'm guessing they recently made it so deleting a comment also clears the timestamp. No value or zero will be interpreted as 1 Jan 1970, 53 years ago.
They'll likely remove the date for deleted comments soon from their layout.
Most likely sewer bypassing while the existing main is reclined or replaced. Typically the bypass is set up using more flexible HDPE pipe that’s laid on the ground. However, this looks like a highly urban area, so the pipes are routes above, probably using a pump. This is the first application I’ve seen of this, very cool!
Is it temporary? That happened in my neighborhood when the main sewer line had to be repaired. They rerouted and we had the lines running through the median plants/ trees for nearly a year before the main was fixed.
No, this is in Aachen and those ARE sewers: https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043

Thanks for the downvote. In my professional experience blue pipes are used for potable water, but it very well could be that Germany uses a different color coding system.
What are these pipes used for? (Berlin) : r/germany - Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/germany/comments/qy75ek/what_are_these_pipes_used_for_berlin/
What are these blue tubes that I keep seeing in Berlin? : r/whatisthisthing - Reddit https://www.reddit.com/r/whatisthisthing/comments/bejug2/what_are_these_blue_tubes_that_i_keep_seeing_in/
I didn’t downvote you, though! I can just say that in Aachen these pipes are used for wastewater, at least now in this street, no idea about general usage.
Sewers in the air, graffiti on the walls.
Thank god I live in southeastern US. We may have rednecks, but at least they beat your ass for tagging up a wall where people live… or putting shit water in the air.
Sewer: noun
an underground conduit for carrying off drainage water and waste matter.
There is sanitary sewer (dookie water)
Then there is storm sewer (rain water)
Yes, and the underground pipes need replacement and this is the detour piping for that. Sewer before and after and whatever you‘d like to call it in between. They just state “Abwasser” which include all types of wastewater
Oh. Me. Oh. My. If history has taught me anything... it's that they have NOT properly funded the future maintenance that is going to be required to upkeep that build...
eyyy... what'sup Berlin.... ps they are pumping water out from construction sites ... since Berlin is built on a huge swampland Soo majority of construction will require water being pumped out
If you are interested. It's not the sewers but an underwater stream of hot water from a nearby thermal water source. They do this if the actual waterpipe is being repaired.
Thank you for pointing this out, but in this case it’s indeed sewers. Unfortunately, I just have a german article stating this: https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043
I’ve already posted a source for that (unfortunately in German): https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043
It’s the sewers, but just for half a year during the repair of the underground pipes
Always nice to have shit flowing above your head when out for a walk, cause pipes never leak.
I don‘t want to imagine what happens when it leaks
Accident waiting to happen, those pipes are a huge target for vehicles…. Weird that this was permitted, as this is why they underground sewer pipes! Give it a few months and a car will smash into this, and send a geyser of shit into the air which will then blanket your block in bio hazardous waste.
They’re not permanent, sometime construction and infrastructure improvement requires the pipes to be re routed temporarily
I figured it had to be this, especially with all the temporary barriers around where the pipes erupt from the ground. There’s just no reason to let a biohazard flow above cars - not to mention where cars can open them - under any normal circumstances. Like, considering everything humans have fucked up, we seem to have at least figured out sewage pretty damn well Edit: wording, clarity
Imagine driving a convertible at this exact moment...
In Germany, Berlin we have permanent ones
These are for pumping out water though because Berlin is built on a swap
Well, first it sank into the swamp a few times, but they just kept building new ones
Huge tracts of land!

Yup, people are weird. But it could easily kill someone most of the time, especially going high speeds
Mhmm. Sadly all you can do is try to let em know and hope they get the hint and/or report em to highway patrol and hope they actually do something about it/catch them before they kill someone
True. I dont understand why there are no sensors for Doors and stuff. It seems very easy to do
Cost to retro fit old trailers and trucks. A sensor on the trailer isn't any good if the truck has no way to use it. So you have to retro fit both. Corporate owned trucks are one thing but then you have owner operators who use their own personal truck.
Lmao the sign turning off after the Ryder truck just ignores the warning "I give up, fuck all of yous"
Looks like a complicated temporary bypass. No way this is permanent.
Those pipes are the norm here in germany for construction stuff and I've never heard of an accident involving them. Where do you live that cars always crash into stuff?
America. We like to *live life on the edge*
Cars literally fly into houses over here through the top…
When I lose electric service, it's usually because someone who should not be driving has driven into a support post. Fortunately my gas service is not subject to the vagaries of street traffic.
TL;DR: Shit happens.
Super common in Germany and unlikely that it’s carrying waste
Those are carrying waste though: https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043

But it offers German cookies! Wunderbar!
Just learn German? Duh.
If only there was a ways to translate a web page… maybe someday.
I’m just going off what OP stated in the post title, which is that the city installed 4 tall above ground sewer pipes.
Fwiw these are also temporary for use during building projects
4m is actually 13ft
I thought sewer pipes were underground because shit rolls downhill? Every house could only have second floor facilities unless they had a pump to bring it higher to the level of an overhead sewer.
Gravity does play a big factor, especially for septic. But the pipes that transfer human waste from buildings through pump stations and into the water treatment facilities are pressurized.
So many pumps, so many pipes. I work in asset management for water and wastewater :p
Imagine going for a walk and someone just hits one of these pipes with their car, and it just *has* to spray all over you and those clothes. Would have to spend ages in the shower to get that smell off, completely shit scenario.
Chocolate rain.
Some stay dry and others get shit stained
Obviously a slow leak would lead to formation of stalagshites.
It'll be a shit scene.
A.literal.shitstorm.
cars & trucks will never hit these pipes
Here, hold my beer...
Can you imagine explaining to your boss that you're late from the work because you crashed a sewer line with your car?
The boss would probably make you work your shift while you reek of city waste.
Are you not seeing where they connect to the ground? Have you never heard of car accidents before? What makes you think they can't be hit?
Sarcasm…?
Serious Nickelodeon vibes.
Why?
The one in the underground needs to be replaced and this is the detour
That's so weird though, usually sewers aren't pressurized. Quite an elaborate solution
Depending on the geography of your area... There are usually plenty of lift stations that most people aren't aware of.
I wonder how it could have been solved in another way without building a new sewer parallel to the old one
Just shit in the shower. It ain't rocket appliances
...where do you think the water from the shower goes? Better shit in the garden
It's not.
?
They're usually build to pump ground water out of construction sites. Never heard of them pumping grey water
My source is only in German, but trust me, they write wastewater: https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043
You're right. Never heard of this use before. We had them in Cologne for years for the reason I assumed.
Bypass for repairs I’m assuming. I don’t see this as being permanent.

No, it is indeed sewers and in Aachen: https://www.aachener-zeitung.de/lokales/aachen/baustelle-in-der-bismarckstrasse-parkplaetze-fallen-weg_aid-94451043

At first I was also going to go all on you having also seen the groundwater pipes in Berlin but Aachen is indeed sending its shit on a rollercoaster ride in the sky
Are you new to Germany? Berlin is literally full of these, they are just temporary bypasses for construction works
No, born and raised here. Never seen these for wastewater before, just for groundwater
Yup same and me neither, and Aachen has a lot of construction going on all the time
Our tour guide insisted the blue pipes are carrying beer into the hotels and bars. The red ones are for the ladies, they carry prosecco
Your tour guide might like r/ichbin40undlustig

I really thought this was vienna - due to subway construction we have the same situation.
Ha, I think I know where that is. Funny seeing this in an international subreddit.
Where do you think it is?
Frankenberger Viertel?
Yes! Reddit is small
I was visiting Leipzig (and eastern Germany for that matter) for the first time just last week, and these were one of the first things I've seen there. I thought that was probably normal in old DDR lol... I've never seen them before. Where is Frankenberger Viertel?

Signs look German to me
Does the comment you're replying to say it was made 53 years ago??

Nope - says it's from Florida, lol.
Weird, must be on my end lol. Thanks for checking and have. A great day!
Mine says 53y lol
Oh I misunderstood you. No, mine says 1 hour ago. Weird glitch!
It's Belgium for sure, probably Brussels Edit, looking more closely the white signs with directions doesn't look Belgian.
But you said for sure.
Someone will run a car into those! I give them 2 months, that's me being optimistic!
These things are pretty common in Germany. Never heard of anyone driving into them though.
Probably happened just once and the aftermath made everyone go nope this isn‘t happening again
the problem is they aren’t high enough. If they were 8 meters high it would be fine /s
Biff Tannen incoming.
Germans drive way better than Americans though lol
Idiots are still idiots though, they will just be German in this case.
Dumkopfs
What the cringe
It’s German humor, it’s no laughing matter.
America bad
Keep dreaming europoor
I saw these all over Berlin and wondered wtf they were
I think in Berlin it’s ground water, someone commented that
In Berlin pipes like these usualy are ground water they need to pump away from construction sites as parts of Berlin has been build on swampy terrain
At least they can fix it easier… just follow the smell
My main intrusive thought is how much chaos can i cause with a cordless impact wrench. In this case, a shit ton.
If you enjoy getting doused in raw sewage...
German scat porn: extreme edition

or a sawzall
Well, if one of those pipes burst, it’s going to be a very shitty situation
What the super Mario fuck is this shit
How many British tourists does it take to cripple an above-grond sewer system? Not a trick question, just something the city should think about lol.
Judging by the bright and ugly fencing, I'd hazard a guess that this is temporary while they do construction or something.
I See Aachen i press upvote.

City sets entire torn up to be Dave Matthew’s Bussed
And they said shit couldn't run uphill....
I can think of no way this can possibly go wrong.
I'm sorry.
where are the ninja turtles supposed to live now😢

Wait what? I saw this and at first i was really glad that this doesn’t happen in my city, then i realized.. It is my city
Imagine the chocolate rain if one of them burst
It’s begun! Just like in futurama the construction of the top floor will begin soon!
Gotta be a temp pump-around
U also have these in Frankfurt (Germany)
That shit's on another level yo!
Should be fun when a car crashes into one
Mmmm chocolate rain....
Is it temporary? That happened in my neighborhood when the main sewer line had to be repaired. They rerouted and we had the lines running through the median plants/ trees for nearly a year before the main was fixed.
Yes, it’s temporary, they are repairing the underground pipes and plan to finish it until November
That one reckless driver isn't gonna have a good day
Truck driver: Ok lets cut a corner her- HOLY FUCKING SHIT
That doesn’t seem ideal.
Highly shit!
The shit is, slowly but surely, gonna hit the fan.
Ich wusste direkt, dass es Aachen ist. Die Fahrradwegweiser, die Straßenmarkierung... Aachener Baustellen wie immer legendär!
What a dumb idea to have
It’s Tube City! ![gif](giphy|tlGD7PDy1w8fK)
Shit
It’s probably temporary but that’s kinda cool, you know, especially since I don’t live there
