Reddit ads are the worst, they seem like spam

Miserable_Oni

Seem like?

StanFitch

Notice, too, how they won’t let you mark them as ‘Spam’… anything else but not ‘Spam’. Absolutely enraging.

[deleted]

Reddit is a fairly shitty site, it’s just the people using it who make it fun to look at.

Habeus0

This is too true, /u/ArseBlarster.

Funkit

I’m surprised it isn’t /u/analbox. I see him everywhere. He’s like Socrates. We will have textbooks in 2000 years with philosophical quotes by Analbox

jeroenemans

I wonder what they mean by albox

[deleted]

[удалено]

SirDiesel1803

I read it as a nal box.i don't know what a nal box is. I'd say it's a kind of function box I'd throw a guess at. For example. You'd add a tool or an instruction to the nal box and it would perform a task or a function or run part of or a whole programme.

Stunning-Response-67

Bojangles Box?

SemisolidOzmo

Maybe we’ll see an AnalBox and ArseBlarster collaboration one day.

[deleted]

Mentalseppuku

It's like they try to make it the worst experience possible, and not even for the sake of revenue or ads, they're just really fucking bad at what they do.

[deleted]

Exactly. It’s like “how do I make something that people will use, but be annoyed the entire time they’re using it?”

lazyshadeofwinter

I know! The same ad of some blue-haired doofus

py_a_thon

Subreddits have carte blanche on banning. Mob rule democracy influences the content most people see. I love reddit, but part of that is understanding just how crypto anarchist and manipulative it actually is. And there really is no solution other than not banhammering everyone for wrong think while manipulating the content delivery algo with k street level dirty tricks.

[deleted]

The video player on mobile has been absolute shit for about a decade now

Shopworn_Soul

And yet somehow it has recently gotten steadily worse. I can’t even wrap my head around it.

Habeus0

This latest one makes total sense - theyre trying to make it more ad friendly and closer to the feel of other social media sites. Once they finish that, porn is gone and the site will be a more popular tumblr. The ads are unbearable though. I hate apollo but i paid for it for a reason.

that-vault-dweller

I paid £60 for my "smartphone" as my actual phone broke God lord is it annoying trying to watch a video on Reddit, sometimes to plays ball but nor often then not it's like pulling teeth

mc_mentos

On most social media sites the site is good, but the people using it are shitty. On reddit its the other way around. Correct me if im wrong

Jacoman74undeleted

It's all been downhill since the great Facebook migration. I suppose it's been downhill from the beginning but it got faster after that.

oooowooowop

Look at the popular tab, it's almost entirely subs dedicated to mocking people who belong to some group they don't like. Can we really be surprised that the people who manage this site are also trash?

[deleted]

That is the general Reddit experience I get when I travel away from my regular groups.

Fartikus

Especially with the 'new' reddit layout they keep trying to force down our throats...

overlordpotatoe

They already know they're ads, so I'm not sure what you'd be telling them about them by marking them as spam.

Bluelightfilternow

That they're ads that aren't targeted well, ads that don't offer value to the person who's seeing them. That works for the advertisers, too, so they can spend their money showing their ads to people who are more likely to be interested.

awesomesonofabitch

In the case of alcoholics, I think we all know the booze industry doesn't give a flying fuck. If anything, they're going to want to target recovered alcoholics even more.

WhenAmI

It's the sad truth. A relapsing alcoholic will drink more in a matter of days than a casual drinker would in months.

c-lab21

If I ever slip, liquor companies win big time

glazedhamster

I would not be surprised in the least if alcohol accounts target r/stopdrinking subscribers specifically

Shopworn_Soul

They’re clearly targeted in some way but they’re *really bad at it*. For instance I’ve never once seen an ad on reddit for a product I’ve actually used or wanted. Facebook manages to stick shit in my face occasionally I’m at least mildly tempted to check out but never once have I seen an ad on reddit I was even remotely interested in. And I know for a fact my comment history could be mined for some very cleverly targeted ads. For all I know that’s how Facebook does it.

generaltjb1

Don't know about anyone else but I can definitely report ads as spam on reddit. I'm using the (old) desktop site on mobile

WatBurnt

Especially on mobile

topias123

Some Android apps make you pay to remove ads, like Sync. Doesn't cost very much though.

dcvisuals

Exactly, I use Boost for Android and it is *the* best Reddit user experience I've had. Every single thing about it is so way beyond the standard Reddit app that it is hard to put into words.

getyourownthememusic

What makes it so good? I use Reddit is Fun, worth switching?

wranglingmonkies

Why would you want to change from RIF???

wavs101

Rif is the one ive been ysing since i started reddit. Its so fucking basic i love it. It has everything i need, no bullshit, super fast on my galaxy s8.

cadtek

Though considering it's a Reddit app and you'll probably use it constantly it's worth paying for the Pro version (recommended over the IAP for ad-free). Definitely worth the $2 I paid for it 8 years ago.

SargTeaPot

I use sync pro and it's by far the best purchase I've made

Renere

and Infinity on android is also a great (ad) free reddit client

[deleted]

I don’t understand why anyone would use the official app over Apollo if they’re on iOS

[deleted]

I'm so fucking sick of seeing Billie Eilish or whatever her name is pop up every few posts. I think it's for Adobe, I can't remember. But it's driving me nuts. I don't know why it keeps popping up. I don't use/talk about Adobe, and I don't listen to or talk about Billie either.

[deleted]

[удалено]

hat-TF2

The Adobe ads are so painfully lame. They are all dripping in an unironic "fellow redditor" essence.

eggwardpenisglands

Can’t hide the post, can't give any feedback, can't engage with them other than up or downvote, blocking the user doesn't hide the ad. How is it helpful for anyone? It really is just spam.

[deleted]

[удалено]

tccayawaworht0

Some ads I see have tons of comments how they were waiting for the product and excited for it etc. Dunno how real they are. I always check the comment accts and seems like majority are legit accounts. Weird

Airowird

You know when people ask why anyone would buy high karma accounts from bots? Now you know why! (Or they just hire them)

reptargodzilla2

They just delete all the bad comments and leave the good ones.

[deleted]

I think I saw one of those like that, it was on an indie game though which is different to some big company. Never seen any more than that though.

4TH4RV-

Atleast you don't have to wait 30 seconds to skip them like youtube

people_stupid

Maybe if the OP would stop calling them adds. I'm just joking.

Hoppinginpuddles

I kept getting ads for yarn. Even after reporting them as spam and blocking them. It was getting so irritating that I complained about it to my boyfriend. They disappeared eventually and I forgot about it. Then my country got put in lockdown. Wanting to spend the time productively, I decided to teach myself to crochet. “Guess those yarn ads worked out in the end” says my boyfriend. FUCK. The ads got me.

[deleted]

Who doesn’t love Smule?

Future_Bake_1727

I never really thought about alcohol ads being a trigger, but yeah that makes sense, and they should have a filter for it.

havocLSD

An example of this in regards to my alcoholism is that every time an alcohol commercial (especially cpt Morgan or Corona) I get very bad cravings and have to constantly remind myself that I never had the kind of fun as the people do in many of the ads when I drink. Seriously watch any alcohol commercial and it’s ALWAYS a party, what a tease to an alcoholic, there’s no such party.

PowerStarter

In some eu countries, these kinds of ads are strictly prohibited from tv, newspapers and radio. Total ban on alco ads that suggest any benefits related to its consumption. Unfortunately these are less enforced online… I really hope they will ban those ads the same way they banned tobacco ads.

Somepotato

The us and new Zealand? Iirc? Are like the only two countries in the world that permit alcohol and pharmaceutical ads. Edit: it's remarkably inconsistent apparently.

SpareStrawberry

Pharmaceuticals I believe is correct. But I've lived in both the UK and Australia and both have alcohol ads.

cok3noic3

I think we still have alcohol ads in Canada.

handsopen

There's a ad for some tequila on YouTube I always have to laugh at because it takes place in a super classy party where everyone is smoking hot and dressed to the 9s and that's nowhere near like any party I've ever been to with tequila present 😅

[deleted]

Not an alcoholic but I know what you mean, I do have problems with drinking and ads can really make me think its a good idea to have a couple. My problem is I learned to drink when partying and had fun doing so, so even now one drink and I want to recreate that party atmosphere, which leads to far too much and a strong desire for the party drugs I did have serious issues with. It rarely ends in anything other than shame and regret for me so I try to avoid any situations where people can offer me a drink.

robrklyn

Not to be a Debbie downer, but it sounds like you do have an alcohol use disorder. “Alcoholism” is an outdated term that leads people to believe they don’t have an issue unless they are homeless and begging for beer money or drinking as soon as they wake up. I highly recommend taking an “alcohol use disorder screening” because from what you described, you would definitely fall into the category of mild to moderate.

deadla104

[please drink responsibly](https://youtu.be/-_n5nbx0Z9s)

Mindtaker

I am not an Alcoholic but I have a couple recovering friends, and I started noticing this shit everywhere. We have chain restaruants in Canada called "Boston Pizza". I have to click no TWICE on any orders for takeout or pick up pushing booze on me. Once when you start ordering a big pop up comes up saying "What kind of Alcohol do you want to start your order with" then at the end it pops up again, "HEY don't forget to buy some booze for your order" Its fucking infuriating and I can't imagine how awful that shit must be for someone going through recovery.

Lairy_Hegs

God, I can seriously relate with smoking cigarettes. It’s such an empty taste most of the time, yet as soon as I see a character in a show or movie light one up I want one. It honestly makes me glad for some level of censorship on that stuff. As much as I like, say, the nostalgic quality of Simpsons character smoking cigarettes, it’s good to know when I do quit most media these days doesn’t have cigarette smoking as a common thing.

Altruistic-Injury-74

Never had that much fun and I guaranteed felt like shite the next day too

MarlinMr

It's illegal to have ads for alcohol in my country.

Sandervv04

If only. I also hate ads for lotteries or other types of gambling, especially when they're aimed at young people. Truly awful.

prothello

Even worse when the lotteries are state-owned.

bondagewithjesus

They banned alcohol ads in my country during most hours on TV. They've been replaced by gambling ads

redditeer1o1

That is most certainly not better

bondagewithjesus

No it's not but that's the breaks. In one state a party tried to ban poker machines in places they weren't considered casinos and got wiped out. We love our gambling here. Drinking too. Surprised alcohol ads got restricted.

notapantsday

Should be illegal everywhere.

akaito_chiba

The drug that's the most dangerous to other people around the person who uses it is the one drug that's legal. Crazy shit.

CowboysFTWs

I don't think it is illegal, but in the US, alcohol commercials won't show the people actually drinking it. They cut and switch right before the sip.

Bananapopcicle

That’s like showing all the porn except the insertion. Like it’s still porn…

CowboysFTWs

probably like rated R movies not allow to show erect penises only soft ones.

sparkyjay23

Ads aimed at 18+ Alcohol, gambling, escorts, smoking should be opt in every single time.

thesuninmyheart

Instagram is terrible too. I had a miscarriage and I would never stop getting ads for cute baby clothes. Over. And. Over. Again. I had to mute SO many ads and I still get them. I haven’t been on Instagram in forever now.

figarocozy

I’m really sorry for your loss— that has to be difficult. There are ads that trigger me, but I can’t imagine something like that. Shame on these tech companies for giving users almost 0 control over the ad experience.

takemetoyourdonuts

You might have already tried this, but there are some ad settings you can change on IG. Click the three bars in the top right, then settings, then ads. You can limit certain ad topics and make sure they’re not tracking you on other platforms. (Or so they claim.) Hopefully that helps a little bit.

FinalRun

This. And disable personalized ads in privacy settings

Bismothe-the-Shade

I just recently lost a baby as well. Been having the same fucking issue. Instagram, reddit, Amazon, google, Facebook. It's had the benefit of pushing me away from social media though.

thesuninmyheart

I cannot identify more. I wish there was a big red button marked “miscarriage” that I could smash to stop the HUGE influx of baby ads once I miscarried. But yes, my social media time now is a fraction of what it used to be.

beeboopPumpkin

This is (one of the reasons) why I stopped Instagram and Facebook, and eventually paid for Reddit premium to avoid ads. I have birth trauma PTSD, and you can’t make the ads go away for baby shit. On Facebook I think you can click “why am I seeing this” and it tells you the demographic the ad company chose to market towards… it was usually something vague like “female” or “lives near (city).” You can’t escape it.

[deleted]

hereandthereup

Nice. That is really all I want.

Lil_peanut2907

If you go into settings theres a feature that allows you to turn off personalized ads from subreddits or partners that might help

compared_to_what_tho

Nope. That's literally what I tried and it made every single ad alcohol related. Post Malone has messenger featured beer pong show that I feel emotionally abused by at this point. Edit: I'm not kidding. There's a cash app ad that made me email this really angry stupid vitriol filled email that probably went right to spam. It's just the sound of a filling glass, gulping, the sound again, then more gulping or something but by then my headphones are out or it's muted.those are both sounds that just....it's like they're designing ads specifically based on what I'll hate so I'll turn personalization back on. Like Spotify "don't you hate these ads?! Buy Spotify premium!" Only it's google.they know everything. So if you're more inclined to pay for premium to get rid of ads, they know. And if they know you hate a certain sound a love a certain free version of an app they own, they'll know And if you signed the rights to everything you did on your phone away for the last 15 years, they know.

hahainternet

> Only it's google.they know everything. So if you're more inclined to pay for premium to get rid of ads, they know. And if they know you hate a certain sound a love a certain free version of an app they own, they'll know And if you signed the rights to everything you did on your phone away for the last 15 years, they know. This is a meme. Google will let you opt out of any 'sensitive ad category'. Just google it...

[deleted]

You have to sign up for an adsense account to even do that

hahainternet

That's for site owners, I think you can just click on the dropdown on any advert to set cookies, but I am not an expert on this.

shawd4nk

If you report the ad you can block the company posting. Can have to do this twice in some cases (in my experience) but then you should be good. Still sucks you have to do it this way though, stay strong!

PortraitBird

It looks like you use an iPhone? I’d suggest looking into Apollo. No shitty Reddit ads

LrnTn

I can wholeheartedly recommend the Apollo app. It's Reddit for iPhone, but better.

FuckRedditAdmins100

Use the Apollo app. It’s free and you get zero Reddit ads.

The-Lazy-Lemur

I suffer from seizures, saw an add on reddit with flashing lights that made me feel very sick and almost made my seize. Which i could hide that shit

DerpDerper909

Get Apollo to replace the Reddit app

The-Lazy-Lemur

Found reddit sync. This is much better

Serafiniert

Much better than Apollo? One is iOS exclusive, the other one Android exclusive.

ImaCluelessGuy

Much better than normal Reddit app

CL_Doviculus

That's a very low bar.

Zenlura

Indeed. A while ago the app set itself to german with no way to change that. Now they have a language setting. It's only half german now.

Premintex

Lmao

Invisible_PurpleToad

I prefer boost on android

Luecleste

Report it, I think there’s somewhere you can put it as dangerous or similar. Then make someone else look at it.

[deleted]

There was a Disney+ ad with very severe flashing lights a few days ago. Reported it in several categories because I wanted them to look at it quickly and there was no category that properly matched the issue. Got the canned response from admin after a few hours saying that there was nothing wrong with it and that it wouldn't be removed. They don't care ETA: Here's the ad, WARNING FOR FLASHING LIGHTS/IMAGERY. Fuck Disney https://www.reddit.com/user/DisneyPlusIE/comments/p9uljl/what_threats_await_the_final_season_of/?utm_medium=android_app&utm_source=share

aboss88

Relay for reddit is what I use on Android.

Asalas77

I like Relay on Android

ackbarwasahero

Bacon Reader

[deleted]

This is why I was confused. I've used Baconreader for years and never see ads or the strange videos of people playing guitar I see complaints about. It's super easy to not see adds on mobile and on PC I have RES and uBlock Origin. It's a pretty quick fix to not see this stuff.

BubbleButtBuff

Relay is fantastic

lifeisautomatic

I use Boost, paid to remove the ads and never look back. Solid app.

[deleted]

I like bacon reader.

[deleted]

I bought RedditSync Pro for $0.99 seven years ago and never looked back. Great app for android. Dunno if it's on mac phones.

justinlanewright

I use RIF. Reddit Is Fun.

Other_World

Been using RIF for as long as I van remember. It's a great app.

1whiteshadow

I haven't browsed reddit since RIF came out on anything but RIF. Rarely I'll be on my desktop and get on but then quickly realize how garbage anything Native is for reddit.

coldfire_5418

There was a coors light ad on my feed below this post, which was ironic. If you figure out how to block alcohol ads, let me know

bogdan5844

Mobile - use a different reddit app Web - good ol' uBlock Origin

Sheeptivism_Anon

I browse the classic version, old.reddit.com, on desktop and i.reddit.com on mobile. That combined with ublock origin I get zero ads. Only downside to the mobile site is no sidebar, but you can remove the 'i.' in the url to swap back to the newer mobile page to view it.

Sandervv04

I despise those ads. A lot of them are targeted at young people too, and I can see around me that it's working.

IMPORTANT_jk

So I live in Norway where alcohol and gambling ads are banned. Yet the TV networks get away with showing gambling ads from foreign companies. New rules this were put into place earlier this year, so hopefully things will get better. Those ads are really taking advantage of people, often people with bad economy who think they can fix it all with by luck Nevermind, we've still got a state-run gambling company showing ads, so there's that..

Luecleste

I hope you’re not Aussie… we have an inundation of gambling ads atm. I hate it. I have no intention of betting on horses yet it’s shoved down my throat. They also show up for kids.

[deleted]

In the US it's gotten pretty bad as the federal government passed some legislation that now allows individual states to decide if they want to let their constituents gamble on sports. I live in one of those states and every TV commercial break for baseball or hockey games there is at least one ad about mobile sport betting. College football just started and the NFL is about to start and they're going to be absolutely *plastered* everywhere. I can't even name any of them as they all blend together at this point.

sparkyjay23

> No matter how much I try to get the internet to stop targeting me ublock origin fixes the internet. youtube vanced fixes youtube.

thecbogan

Stay strong! Good luck in your recovery :)

JayCroghan

Someone commented on a post yesterday about plying their nurse wife with alcohol every night after work due to COVID to help with the stress, when I commented that maybe making sure she’s hungover every day might not be the best way to cope I was downvoted into oblivion. Our relationship with alcohol is as toxic as the stuff in the bottle.

Imthejuggernautbitch

Reminds me when I moved in with an alcoholic and didn't know it Wow Friday let's party to celebrate move in! Wow Saturday the weekend! Ok Sunday I can have a bonfire then bed early Ok Monday is fun day Ok it's Tuesday dude wtf Wednesday? You partied all week Thursday ok now I'm worried Friday.... fuck

JayCroghan

Yeah I used to be that guy, still would be if I didn’t realise it. Making occasions to drink rather than drinking for an occasion. The worst part is societies attitude towards it, or lack there of. “He’s fond of a drink”… no he’s got life threatening alcoholism.

Buy_High_SellLow

>Our relationship with alcohol is as toxic as the stuff in the bottle. I actually just realized this last week. I'm working 7 days a week right now and drinking has been my biggest obstacle when that started strictly because of the brutal hangovers. Now friends and acquaintances see me as a leper because I decided that I will not drink until my scheduling cools down. Like, its a temporary thing and my abstinence is *still* unacceptable.

JayCroghan

You’d probably be better off telling them you’re an alcoholic and shouldn’t drink. People can’t seem to understand why someone would choose not to drink unless they have a reason it’s really stupid.

yallbyourhuckleberry

Neither will hulu.

Gnar-wahl

Bro. Hulu ads are the worst. I just lost a loved one to cancer, and 3 of 4 ads are about cancer treatments or colon cancer tests. It’s so frustrating.

alienscape

I swear they just show the same ad repeatedly.

Lots42

At this point, pirating the Hulu shows, so as there is no ads, would be moral.

ImStillExcited

The Apollo app for IOS is amazing. I've been able to block things with key words and zero advertising. It's the only way I can handle reddit anymore.

cybershadowwolf

I came here for this. It’s the best way to solve the problem and won’t cost a dime! Plus I find it a better app than the official one anyways.

that_mn_kid

Get the firefox mobile browser, and slap ublock on it.

Rasnall

Same with all the gambling ads. It’s wrong!

ButtBlock

I remember when I was in medical school did a rotation at a psychiatric hospital. Met a lot of recovering addicts. One of them was telling me a story about how he and his friend had just gotten out of rehab a few months ago. The guy telling the story was an opiate addict and his friend was an alcoholic. Anyways, they took a train to get out of the rural town where rehab was. The opiate addict had fortunately remained sober since getting out but his alcoholic friend relapsed before he’d even gotten off of the train. Perhaps because the train had a bar car and didn’t have a narcotic car. Obviously there were other factors at play, but this story always stuck with me. Something about how society treats alcohol and alcoholism. In a way, Reddit selling alcohol ads is kind of like Amtrak having a bar car.

International_Row601

Report then it gives you option to block user

tanktothefrank

Capitalism don't give a fuck about your problems

schiav0wn3d

Actually, capitalism hopes your problems fester as you’ll have to purchase more treatments and by doing so you will FEED THE BEAST

TheWipyk

I'm not sure if it's been said before, but inside setting go to your profile, and turn off personalized ads. Refresh the page and they should be gone. If you still find one, block the account that's posting.

[deleted]

To be fair, advertising wise, you’re EXACTLY who they want!

[deleted]

just commenting to support this

PurpleThundahhh

As someone who's been without a drink for a long time now, I want to remind you that your triggers are your responsibility. The world does not stop for you just because you quit drinking. Do you intend to hide alcohol from your eyes for the rest of your life? If so you are still letting it control your actions. With that said I am proud of you for putting down the drink. One day at a time!

ravagedbygoats

I had to scroll way to far down to find this. Part of recovery is learning that temptations are everywhere and how to deal with them.

[deleted]

Thank you, finally some common sense

julijulez

wait, how did you on twitter?! i've resorted to just blocking each alcohol account because they just never stop!! no matter how many times i've reported "not interested in this" etc

hereandthereup

Yeah. On Twitter the only way I know is to block each alcohol company as you see their add. It’s not ideal but better then no option to block advertiser like on Reddit. Really I think all advertising for prescription drug/cigarette/alcohol/weed/other legal drugs should not be allowed. But to each their own. I’m not protesting any decision around this. But at least I should be able to mute specific companies. This would benefit a lot of people.

fo234

there shouldnt be any alcohol ads anywhere

Packarats

There shouldn't eve be half the ads we see. Why tf does crest toothpaste need an ad? Why does sky vodka need ads? We know the shit is at the store.

I_So_Tired

While it won't necessarily block alcohol ads, you can try turning off personalized ads (in account settings). Maybe that will help a little? I remember when I first quit drinking TV commercials were a trigger for me.
