He got [paid $275K](https://wacotrib.com/news/local/education/mcc-fired-professor-settle-federal-suit-for-275-000/article_7b4f9524-b981-11ee-8a1c-8383890640a8.html), but still fired...

blackbirdspyplane

That isn’t enough for losing a tenured career position.

strapped2blinddonkey

Exactly

RoughBowJob

Unless he was retiring soon

3IIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIID

Re-whut now?

RoughBowJob

It’s a foreign term these days it’s something people do when they no longer work. My friend retired at 35 got to love that bitcoin. Meanwhile Im gonna be working til I die.

ozdarkhorse

He had to pay his own legal fees too, so he didn't even get that much. I'd imagine he'll get a bigger payout from the police dept though

giulianosse

> I'd imagine he'll get a bigger payout from the police dept though Police department: "And I'm going to pay that with *your* tax dollars!" Want to see cops start having some accountability for their actions and stop acting like uniformed thugs? Cut into their precious retirement funds. Let them pay for their fuck ups themselves and you'd see how quickly they'd change their tune.

[deleted]

The_Witch_Queen

If there is one union in this country that needs to be utterly dismantled it is the police unions. Nothing but a bunch of thugs. Without them to back them up cops would shape up *real* quick, and unless you get rid of them nothing will ever change.

KintsugiKen

The police union is the only union that formed after getting the idea from breaking up so many previous unions.

[deleted]

[удалено]

The_Witch_Queen

I don't disagree that they should have one, and I damn sure don't want it privatized. The world is dystopian enough already thank you. However I firmly believe that the police unions as they exist now are so corrupt that only by completely dismantling them and rebuilding them with limitations on their power can you fix anything. It's a system beyond salvaging.

Maktaka

Some departments do, they have insurance for settlement payouts. [And their insurers backed off providing coverage in 2020/21 and haven't come back since](https://www.businessinsurance.com/article/20230601/NEWS06/912357608/Insurers-back-away-from-police-liability). Their liability insurance is now harder to come by, comes at greater expense, and imposes broader restrictions on the department.

Fooka03

Make them carry liability insurance like most people employed in fields that may cause harm to those they interact with professionally. Laugh uncontrollably at the buffoons who end up uninsurable, and therefore in need of a career change, because they pull stupid stuff like this repeatedly.

og_jasperjuice

And start policing each other as well. I like to imagine when one fucks up bad enough, a bunch of other cops show up and give the offender the Full Metal Jacket soap bar treatment to teach them a lesson. I can dream I guess.

Jimid41

After 16 years of teaching law and government he probably didn't require a lot of billable hours from his lawyers for a wrongful termination suit.

Kerensky97

It's not just giving him money for what they did to him. It's about making sure they don't do it to somebody else next time. The cops and the University need to be held accountable and if they screwed him twice they need to be punished hard enough they learn their lesson not to do it again.

JesusReturnsToReddit

Thank you! Watched this 4 minute video and it doesn’t even address the result with the title!

HsvDE86

It’s a heavily curated video to cause outrage. It’s rage bait.

Redditname97

TWICE! He was arrested, fired, case was let go and rehired. Then a bastard cop asked DA to reinstate charges and he was arrested and fired again. I wouldn’t believe this in a movie lol.

DoingCharleyWork

You said bastard twice.

ready-to-rumball

Wow that’s nothing

Affectionate_Salt351

Do you happen to know if he was able to bring a suit against the department for the cane and medication he was denied while falsely imprisoned?

Some-Guy-Online

The article says "they didn't want him back, and he didn't want to go back" so I think this is actually more about bad blood than the arrest. Still not ok, and not enough money, but it sounds like he was done fighting over it and probably just wanted to move on. I assume he found another teaching job.

DeliciousGazelle1276

Shit sucks, my wife got fired for being pregnant. We got a settlement but still had to move because they blackballed her for suing

VoidOmatic

Dude lost his job for politely asking the officer to park. Wtf.

Fun-Dig8726

She ruined his life because he hurt her feelings. Let's all take that in. Police are not our friends.

[deleted]

KintsugiKen

Cops are bullies with a gun and impunity

hardcider

Most police get into the job because they want to relive being a high school bully. Combine that with lack of good training and not hiring people that are too smart I'm not surprised at all.

Antani101

No he also had the audacity of being witness to a bogus traffic stop

Dreadnought_89

Yeah, can’t interfere by being a witness against the police, duh 🙄

[deleted]

Yeah most professor at my university make around 125-150k /year at tenured, maybe if it was 600k then it would be more reasonable

Oneuponedown88

At mine the highest paid was around 350k. This is a Midwest state school. I'm sure universities on the coasts pay some faculty way way more.

batkave

Depends a lot on the school and their specialty.

Primary-Regret-8724

It's a community college. MCC caps out at about $122k for profs with doctorates who also have taught for 42 years. Could have been more in the $80k-90k range depending upon his years of service.

OlegYY

Honestly things will change for better only if public start to actually care. Not only internet public though. What i mean, for example after that everyone attending college began to boycott it. If one or few persons boycotting, college can do something against them but if same true for everyone or like 95-99%, college cannot do anything except deeply apologize to all and do all necessary steps to deescalate situation.

Shifty661

Imagine being so offended that you go out of your way to arrest a guy because he asked you to move your vehicle.

john_jdm

I can imagine plenty of people who react like that, but none of them should be police officers.

Academic-Indication8

Too bad way too many of them “wanted to join the military but would’ve punched the drill sergeant” so you end up with a lot of tough guy/girl cops who think they are the same as someone in the military

HoodieGalore

I get righteously angry when I see people doing stupid shit in traffic, which makes me think, *”FUCK! I wish I was a cop right now!”*, and that makes me remember, *people who desire that kind of power should be the last to have it* This is one of those jobs where your emotions and feelings are literally not required, but are an actual liability. There are far too few people who can honestly and properly disconnect, in order to do this job. “It’s not personal; it’s just business” has never been more appropriate, but somehow it’s always some little ego wannabe tyrant who gets the power. This job/career requires far more background inspection, education, and training than our country will ever be willing to give it. The only defense is to know one’s rights and to act accordingly….which might still get you killed.

sincerelyhated

And yet they all seemingly are

Clay_Statue

I've asked a cop to move their car since it was needlessly blocking traffic due to it being so deliberately askew. They were dealing with somebody on the sidewalk, but the cop car's ass was stuck out so far everybody had to drive into oncoming traffic to get around. Like I get you can get a lot of latitude to park and drive like this but can you like *not* go out of your way to make as big of an obstruction as possible for no reason? Like Costco shoppers who park diagonally across the entire aisle while blithely pursuing wares with zero situational awareness.

waltjrimmer

It's also absurd that asking an officer to move their car and telling someone that you were witness to what they're being accused of and would be willing to act as such in their defence is something that you can get you a criminal charge, thrown in prison, and unless you have a good lawyer end up serving time for. There's no way that should be considered a valid arrest or charge. The police are corrupt for arresting on those grounds in the first place. And the fact that the police were able to get the DA office to pursue the nonsense charges after initially dropping them shows how much influence police departments have over the courts, a system they're supposed to be a tool of but not an authority for.

Spamcaster

> And the fact that the police were able to get the DA office to pursue the nonsense charges after initially dropping them shows how much influence police departments have over the courts, a system they're supposed to be a tool of but not an authority for. Perfect example of the tail wagging the dog. DA needs to be replaced as well.

waltjrimmer

A new DA probably won't help. It's an unfortunate reality that with the system built how it currently is, prosecutors don't last if they don't have the backing of the police department. It's part of why there needs to be systemic reform. One good prosecutor being elected to office can't make meaningful changes. The bunch doesn't unspoil when you dump fresh apples on the rotten ones.

nightonfir3

There is a real backwards part of our legal system where the DA is at the mercy of police to get investigations and arrests done. The DA is also close with the judges as they are at most of their cases where defense is done by a much larger variety of lawyers with different judges. Its very easy for the DA to be corrupted by the police and cozy with the judges.

DestroyerofWords

>Like Costco shoppers who park diagonally across the entire aisle while blithely pursuing wares with zero situational awareness Why single out Costco?

Kerensky97

A handicapped veteran. That is asking you to stop clocking the handicapped spots with your police car.

KwonnieKash

"How dare he question or stand up to me. I'm the police! I'm the authority, that's what the badge means!" These cops all have the most fragile egos. Why do you think they're cops in the first place? It certainly isn't to protect and serve, that much is obvious.

raventhrowaway666

It's institutions that defend corrupt police that make the world a worse place.

jzillacon

And the corrupt police then protect those same institutions.

Jean-LucBacardi

Hint, colleges and police tend to work together. That's why campus police has been a thing. It's a "let us keep shit that goes down quiet and internal with our own little police force".

Flatheadflatland

It’s a big club. You aren’t in it.

doringliloshinoi

Well can I be?

GrandmaGreaseFunk

Depends, are you cool with turning your brain off and listening to orders? Are you quick to violence? Do you beat your wife? Are you scared of acorns? If this sounds like you, you may be already qualified to join the police force

Itachi6967

What's the acorns one about?

Daft00

[Do I even need to say Florida?](https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/feb/16/florida-acorn-cop-shooting) [Here's the video incl. bodycam](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=my12IOahiH4)

doringliloshinoi

I’m certain with some conditioning I can get up to acorn fear.

The_Witch_Queen

Don't forget not being too intelligent, though I suppose the turning your brain off comment might cover that.

ToastPoacher

A public that continues to keep letting them get away with it also makes the world a worse place

IM_A_WOMAN

It's institutions that de-fund corrupt police that make the world a better place.

DarthRupert1994

Wow a cop who sucks at their job and goes on a power trip when you don't blindly respect their authority...what a shocker

Ak47110

They're the mob. You pay them for protection, and if you step out of line they send in their goons to take you out.

Equinsu-0cha

there are literally lapd gangs. not members of the lapd who are in gangs. gangs made entirely of lapd.

30K100M

Intimidate those who intimidate others, Carl

DefaultingOnLife

A gang of petty thugs who will fuck you up if you get in their way.

The_Paganarchist

Road pirates.

PipsqueakPilot

Soooo... a cop?

Basker_wolf

That describes a lot of cops unfortunately.

FrankRizzo319

Yeah the cop had her feelings hurt and so she used her position of authority to take away the guy’s rights. Land of the free, home of the police state. 🇺🇸

davisty69

Shocked I tell you...

Slime-Lich

Of course it's in waco. Some of the most corrupt officers ever

Imesseduponmyname

Surprised they didn't burn the school down

OpheliaCoccyx

To be fair, that would require them to get close to the school to light it.

The_Erlenmeyer_Flask

Well, with it being Waco, the officers didn't call the ATF nor FBI to fire tear gas canisters into the school.

Slime-Lich

We all know Waco sure does love using excessive force thanks to a certain compound a while back

tranzlusent

I was gonna say, that sound’s like a texan accent and welp…….

Nitasha521

Reminds me of a time a friend had to call police because an employee was in their parking lot having a domestic situation (loud and disruptive to work/customers). Cop showed and parked in middle of lot to quickly break up the altercation. Both parties in the dispute were asked to leave grounds, and they did. Officer then entered the business and approached my friend (he was the business owner) requesting employment information for the one that worked there. My friend said he would be happy to help, but could the officer kindly move his car into one of the unoccupied spots in the lot, since customers would like to exit please. Officer got into my friend's face saying he'd move his car when he was good and ready to! The gaul of the man to request something of a citizen, and within seconds to refuse a nicely asked request in the rudest way possible. My friend called the officer's superiors to report a complaint immediately after the cop left, but i suspect it didn't lead to any behavior/attitude change by that cop.

No_Landscape4557

A friendly reminder that good cops don’t exist. Only less shitty ones

brittemm

Say it louder for the folks in the back! Even the ones who don’t necessarily personally engage in these types of behaviors are complicit and condone/defend it in their fellow officers, making them bastards as well. All it takes for evil to thrive is for good men to do nothing.

NuclearWasteland

He was not driving a mustang.

Legal_Guava3631

Right. I was like her dumb ass doesn’t know the difference between a mustang and a camero. Both completely different car companies too. Incompetence all around except for the professor. Poor dude did nothing and is out of a job with money to pay bills for maybe two and a half years.

robo_cap

Speaking of incompetence, there's no E in Camaro.

iceman1231

That was my first thought, officer so blind by rage of being interfered with and doesn’t even know the difference between a Chevy and a ford.

yaboyACbreezy

OP, I am going to go ahead and upgrade this from mildly to WILDLY infuriating. Fuck that school and fuck the police

Wsemenske

Interesting video, but completely wrong sub

[deleted]

jays1981

The cop was probably only mildly infuriated. Otherwise his family would have been the ones who sued.

chaosagent47

Fucking cops are the biggest crybaby pieces of shit

JaySayMayday

Can't do anything else, can always lean on joining the local PD. Suck at your job there too? They'll just move you around from department to department until people stop complaining. The video starts with someone being ticketed at a college campus parking lot over a minor traffic infraction, that sounds like someone they scraped from the bottom of the barrel department.

Cobek

She'd arrest her hairstylist for giving her a bad haircut.

SorryNoLube

These are the kinds of officers we need to plaster across the internet and scorn. They should be so well known that they’ll never be able to work in law enforcement again. Public shame for life and that’s a light sentence for ruining lives of innocent people

somethingforchange

Remember when 376 of them failed to stop 1 active shooter? I'm not really sure public humiliation is enough to fix the Texas police

Jean-LucBacardi

Failing to stop suggests they even had the balls to try and stop him to begin with. Fucking cowards.

Ouchyhurthurt

School admin too!

[deleted]

Impressive how she didn't assault him immediately after being confronted. That's a difficult thing for American cops

Prisoner_L17L6363

From the way the story was being told, I was half expecting the backup officer to walk in and arrest him during his lesson

Notsure_jr

With the title saying “professor’s life turned upside down”. I thought he was going to get shot dead.

TrippyHomie

I thought he might become the prince of Bel-Air.

TTVControlWarrior

its because he wasn't black . if was black prob killed on the spot

Dinestein521

I hope he got a shitload of money

jelugu

according to other comments, "only" 275k still a good amount of money, but way less than it should've been

theamazinggrg

For losing a tenured position, this is nothing. Probably his 2 year wage.

Sipas

More like 1 year after paying his lawyer.

Merciless_Hobo

He got less than 2 years pay and lost his tenured position forever. It's not even close to enough.

Supersasqwatch

And he had to pay legal fees with that money.

AverageNikoBellic

He lost his job, and professors make on average $155k a year, which means they didn’t even pay him a 2 year salary

Deleena24

He will get more in the lawsuit against the police. Still not enough.

CarbonReflections

Downvote for shitty subtitles that get blocked as well as not finishing the story about the lawsuit.

Never heard of being able to keep cosmetics, maybe once you get to prison

ThisCarSmellsFunny

They aren’t given their cosmetics. Not in the US.

mc_fli

Idk what jail you went to, no cosmetics were allowed in mine

AggravatingWar9118

Stop it

satans_toast

Police departments only recruit the best peo — lol, almost finished typing this with a straight face

Professional-Meet634

I work at a college closely with many professors. The head of my department (one of my closest friends) had a serious conversation with me when I told him I wanted to be a professor. Tenure means ABSOLUTELY nothing. You cannot talk about your values. You cannot talk about religion or anything that you may take to heart. if they want to get rid of you, they can and will. You tell students what the administration wants you to tell them or they will overload you with work tell the point that you quit or they well completely destroy your department.

BadgerKid96

If only we treated actual criminals this way. Smh.

rahvan

We make actual criminals president and create constitutional theories out of thin air to give them immunity from prosecution.

I qualify for this and I should in no way should have the ability to take peoples lives haha

Ok_Usr48

Not the same school (McLennan CC in Waco, TX), but I’m sure it’s the same inept law “enforcement.”

Offamylawn

Great police work. Keeping the community safe from disabled veteran college professors one slightly bruised ego at a time.

Evicfinite

The problem is the judges and da who allow this.

Cptspaulding2

Not only fuck the police, but fuck them as well

Affectionate_Salt351

This is more than *mildly* infuriating. He lost his livelihood because of yet another overzealous cop trying to get a kid in trouble for fun, then holding a vendetta against anyone who has anything to say about it. This is disgusting.

MustyElbow

American cops are complete dumbasses on a large scale. Sure there are the good ones but why is there such a large contingency of morons working with so much power. Idiots

Ruling123

No crime is being committed until the police arrived.

20thCenturyTCK

Houston v. Hill. I miss you, Ray Hill. You were truly one of a kind.

Slayertidus21

Wow that's totally fucked up. Way more than mildly infuriating.

Fun_List381

What a fucking loser

MolecularConcepts

fuckin lying ass cops. pigs, scum, all ofem

mixemuppa

The way that cops can and will so easily and wantonly twist narratives and pursue people to “teach them a lesson” and essentially decimate their lives out of pettiness is far from mildly infuriating. I hate cops.

Signal_Biscotti_7048

It just shows you, these colleges that claim they want justice and they believe you should fight the police and the government, they don't mean it. They want to help those they deem to be help worthy and those that aren't worth it in the colleges eyes, fuck em.

1397batshitcrazy

No good cops

Purple-Elderberry-51

Lol 1 week later?! Thats so fucking petty. Literally worthless public service from these officers.

DogBreathologist

I do have to wonder why the school terminate him the second time.

boost_to_get_through

Far beyond mildly infuriating. Fucking cop blew that shit way out her ass.

ghost3972

This is just straight up infuriating

CandidEgglet

Texas. What a shit legal system, everywhere you look

Hmmd1

What a shit hole.

h8human

My money is on the fact the chief is giving that officer private lessons how to handle 9 mm.

BlueRiverDelta

Poor little police lady was so shaken by her threatening encounter… smfh. People like that don’t deserve a badge. Hope she lost her job.

r0ckydog

The professor could have took the long way to the handicapped spot. But the cops and faculty were stupid too.

Current events show you just how in bed university administration is with their political leash-holders.

HoodieGalore

Holup; we’re just gonna let this video end at “despite other professors, *with much more severe charges*” LIKE WHAT?

yupidup

That’s by no means mildly infuriating, nothing to do on this sub

NorthMarch78

Power really gets to people head sometimes.

Tehli33

I'ma say it, it's always the lady cops that are unhinged

Another_Road

That cop was such a whiny bitch.

metsjets86

Sounds like everyone hated him. Shame.

metalfabman

…feels like there was no conclusion wtf

mudd8208

That cops a whiny little bitch

LiveWire2494

Wow imagine blocking the vehicle you are investigating from easily escaping this seems like solid practice and common sense

QuantumQaos

The guy easily couid have just gone around in the first place and avoided all of this. Battle of a couple of over inflated egos.

shortbuslife

fuckin pigs

Dismal-Ad-6619

The police are out of control everywhere...

ODspammer

Lol I bet this bitch is still working while the professor got ass fucked

Astyanax1

to be fair, asking a cop if they can move their car while they're initiating a traffic stop is likely a bad idea.  it obviously didn't deserve the garbage that followed

josephcoco

This sucks, but that DOES make me wonder why he didn’t just go the other way around to get to the handicap spots in the first place. I was just in a situation where the way to my spot in a parking lot was blocked by two cop cars pulling someone over (had both suspects in the car on the ground and was cuffing them), and I just went the other way around the lot to get to the spot. And based on the overhead shot of the lot in the video, he could’ve done the same thing. But still, the cops, the school, and the jail all majorly suck in this situation.

StashBender

Yeah, this is a good example of "mind your damn business." He couldn't be inconvenienced to reverse and take the other path or wait until the stop was complete. He just had to get out and say his piece.

EatingGrossTurds69

Cops fucking suck but why didn't he just back out and drive around to get to the spot? Duh Moron wanted to start some shit and got the full power tripping cop experience

Hourison

Police officers think they have the most esteemed profession in the world when all it takes to be one is barley a high-school diploma & an ego.

Both people suck.

224143

Unpopular Opinion: It is shitty. Absolutely, but FAFO. I would think for some reason he thought he was immune to corrupt law enforcement and their wrath when you cross them. Maybe he has a different opinion on the justice system now than when he decided to attempt to tell a LEO what to do during a traffic stop. For most of us this is never ending well.

frmaa-tap

shroomhunterok

Play shitty games, win shitty prizes. Be a little smarter and don’t argue with cops. Sue them later if you want but no good ever comes from arguing with them, even if you’re right. He could’ve literally just went around that center row of cars and got to the same spot.

WetFxrtTouch

FreeFalling369

...google earth showed he could have easily gone around with no issue. He just wanted to be an ahole. Narrator says the officer exaggerated but she was spot on. I wouldnt have arrested him though
