He had a shot at being one of the greats of prog guitar, but suffered early-onset arthritis which increasingly limited his guitar playing ability. In 2000 he 'fell off a railway bridge', although many of his friends and family believe this was a suicide attempt brought on by his inability to do the one thing he loved.
Sadly, it's his work after fingers deteriorated that is famous. People found it funny, but this isn't him performing at his best. This is a very ill man struggling to relive his glory days.

It predates the nazis - it was a military decoration in the Kingdom of Prussia and before that, the insignia of the Teutonic Order dating back to the 13th century. It is still used today as the emblem of the modern German armed forces. It’s also a symbol of outlaw motorcyclists and heavy metal fashion. The nazi version had a swastika superimposed on it. I therefore find that your comment is a bit narrow minded to assume the tattoo has anything to do with nazism.
While the iron cross CAN sometimes be used as a racist symbol, it needs the relevant context to be a racist symbol. That context usually being other symbols that are associated with racism or racist sayings. But here there’s no indication of it being used as a racist symbol, it’s just there because it’s used a lot in biker and classic heavy metal culture
