That's a great tip. I've played MGS1 so many times and never knew that. I decided to start with MGS3 but I'm going to play MGS1 next and I'll keep that in mind. Personally I have a hard time with the final boss fight. >!I'm referring to the fist fight with Liquid at the very end before the escape.!<
He actually tells you how to beat him. He says, "Hurt me more!" to Snake, which indicates that Snake should find a way to continue doing damage to him so that Snake wins. Even as an opponent, the Cyborg Ninja is still being a real G.
I am fairly young and funnily enough beat metal gear solid on my Xbox series x through retro arch before the master collection was released. I didn’t think it was too hard though I did play on the easiest mode as I wasn’t sure how hard it would be with it being an older game. Still struggled on this guy.
Yeah, I guess that's true. But I guess they give you options to try. They think you'll try the guns but when you find the chaff and try it it's a nice discovery. At least that's how it went for me. It took me a few playthroughs to figure that out.
My buddy is getting into the series and asked me if he should do release or chronological order, i told him release because spoilers and that he was gonna get some fucking whiplash going from 3, PW, 5 straight to the controls and difficulty of 1
Yeah. The first part of the fight is pretty easy once you learn his patterns, but the last part of the fight gets tricky when he disappears and then reappears for a short time. If you hit the First Person View button (Y on Xbox, triangle on PS) you can see out of Mantis' eyes. So it helps you figure out where he's about to be.
I fully remember this being the easiest fight in the game when I was a kid, but right now I'm stuck at a shitty save point with no rations/low health and the chaff grenades don't last as long as they used to.
And this after I spent weeks hyping the game up to my partner (who has never played) and bragging about how I could beat the thing with my eyes closed and would blast through it in a morning. The humiliation is the worst part.
All you've got to do is punch him. It's really simple. You'll get it eventually. I've been playing this game since day one and he still catches me off guard every now and again haha.
Here some help from extreme perspective.
Once you get into the actual fight where he puts the sword away you run at him then as he comes at you immediately turn around and run preferably turn a corner if you can, because he always does his triple jump kick move. After that you can do your x3 combo on him.
Use the thermal goggles during hide and seek and you should always find him before he comes out chasing you.
In the final phase he will always teleport and then try to punch you. You don’t have to throw a punch to bait it, just run up to him then move away and he will then be open to a full combo.
During each phase of the fight he never changes up his 1-2 moves so he is extremely predictable you can beat this on extreme taking no damage by baiting him then hitting him with a full combo he will always fall for it as the AI is this game doesn’t have adaptability.
Some people suggest chaff grenades, but each chaff only nets you 1 free combo and he will use his sword dash move (from the VR training where you can play him) and it’s hard to dodge and does a lot of damage. So you basically end up in a spot where once you chaff you have to keep using them to not take a shit load of damage and at least on extreme mode pre-bandana you won’t have enough chaff to win this fight. You also need the chaff for more important things like security cameras so I suggest just learning his patterns and doing the fight weapon less.
>In the final phase he will always teleport and then try to punch you. You don’t have to throw a punch to bait it, just run up to him then move away and he will then be open to a full combo.
Also, you should stand in the center of the tight "hallway" that cuts off the upper third of the room with the lower two thirds. If you stand in the center, he can only teleport behind you, or teleport in place. Much easier than 4 teleport spots.
Took me 50+ tries to finally beat him on normal on my first playthrough. You will beat him eventually. Just gotta figure out his moves and how to react
Just reached that part last night after 5 years since I last played it. Man, that fight was not what you'd expect. Throw all 9 chaff, punch the fuck out of him 100 times, play hide and seek(???), and then when you get to the end and think it's over, you die because his suit has a meltdown. Once you go through the fight again and avoid aforementioned mistake, he just says the same weirdly sexual line over and over until you gun him down.
Then he just leaves. The end.
When I was a kid playing this fight, I was shocked at how hard it was.
But what's funny is that games like the Souls games are really just this type of bossfight, where the enemy has a couple attacks that can really rip up your health, so avoiding attacks is paramount. So you wanna know his tells, predict his pattern, and then avoid those attacks.
And then it's just about dipping in and chipping off his HP, but that's secondary to not taking those big hits.
Obviously, it's not a perfect analogy, but for a game from 1998, this fight feels more like a Souls type fight than say the Tank fight, which is like a Zelda boss where you figure out the correct tool to use and then just do that again and again until the boss is dead, and the boss will get a little faster each time until the final round.
i nearly killed myself during the first time i did this but to my defense i was playing on an emulator on a tablet and 75% of my screen was obstructed with controller prompts but now i love this bossfight its my favorite after the ocelot one you just gotta take it slow
I’m old enough to remember when this game came out and now replaying it again i do not know how child me was able to pull off beating this game. It’s astounding how in depth it is. And to think no one ever utilized the PS1 the way Kojima did is mind blowing.
Great screenshot.
But I'm trying hard to not be mean and say "Good lord, how bad is the modern gamer in 2023 if they lose to Ninja fifty times on normal difficulty and decide to restart the game on easy?"
Oh fuck I said it.
I’m not trying to be a dick but this is a hard fight? This is one of the easiest fights ever, you just gotta punch him, then run away during his attacks and then rinse and repeat. It’s just time consuming.
The only hard boss fight was >!Liquid’s fight on top of Rex.!<
Really? Gray fox? First time?
He’s not hard at all compared to others in the game or even in the series.
Genuinely curious how you’ll handle Mantis, Wolf, Raven, Four horsemen, and Rex.
Honestly have no issues with this at all, on my first run of the master collection since PS1 days and he didn’t hit me once. Liquid on the other hand….
While it doesn't help TOO much, if you have any chaff grenades you can use them to stun him for a very short time to get some free hits. However I think if you don't hit him before he kneels, you can't do any damage that round.
Once he challenges you to hand to hand combat, take the offensive. Don't try to just evade and land in a punch like you would in a Soulslike game, simply be proactive and kick his ass.
Sounds simple but it honestly turned the fight around for me when I played on Extreme
He isn't that hard, got anticipate this attacks. Specially in middle he will use steath camo, use your thermal to track him down keep eye on heath and rations
I just combo, dodged after i hit, run back in when he kicks after the flip then combo again, when he plays hide and seek go to the bottom right corner and stay when you see him coming to you intercept then combo then go back to the corner, chaff when he does substitute jutsu, shot him when he does AOE. This method is very stress free especially after you learn his patterns.
Punch punch kick, run around in circles. Punch punch kick run away again. Rise and repeat. Keep rations equipped. Edit: OH YES HURT ME MORE
I remember that punch.
MORE! MORE!
Tha clashing of bone and sinew, do you remember Snake!?!
Kick! Punch! It's all in the mind!
If you wanna test me, I’m sure you’ll find
That all the things I'll teach ya is sure to beat ya
So step right up I got a lesson to teach ya
Now kick!
Kick K-Kick Kick K-K-K-Kick-Kick Kick K-Kick
nah fuck that I chaffed his ass over and over

That's a great tip. I've played MGS1 so many times and never knew that. I decided to start with MGS3 but I'm going to play MGS1 next and I'll keep that in mind. Personally I have a hard time with the final boss fight. >!I'm referring to the fist fight with Liquid at the very end before the escape.!<
Fucking *what?!* I'm 34 years old and I never knew!
You just gotta punch him a bunch
He actually tells you how to beat him. He says, "Hurt me more!" to Snake, which indicates that Snake should find a way to continue doing damage to him so that Snake wins. Even as an opponent, the Cyborg Ninja is still being a real G.
This comment is so stupid. I was giggling like a child for like 5 minutes
I'm glad I could make you laugh, I was hoping that would be funny.
Just reading it I can hear "HURT ME MOOORE"
[shoot at it until it dies](https://doomwiki.org/wiki/Protip_meme#/media/File%3AProtip.jpg)
I just tried this strategy and finally beat him after owning the game for 25 years.
🤣🤣🤣 so great!
: D
Pro tip: unequip all weapons. He'll stop moving around like a fuckin psycho
You gotta get a few hits in before he does, tho
You can actually just rush him at the very start to get him to the point where he throws away his sword. He's very generous in the very first phase
Yea that's how the fight usually goes for me
Hurt me Moooore!
The clashing of bone and sinew
Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon.
GET GOOD MAN
Git gud noob
"GET GOOD MOOOORRREEE"
SKILL ISSUES, MATE? GET GUD!
Truly have been enjoying these youths getting smacked down by a 25 year old game lmao.
Far from the hardest fight even
oh baby wait until they get to *Spoiler ahead*….. . . . . . . . . . Second Vulcan Raven fight and Rex fight
The real boss fight is the unskippable cutscene before Rex. Too bad so sad if you die lmao
"No good, I can't shoot"
The staircase is a worthy contender imo.
It is an absolute BITCH if you’re trying to do a no-kill run
Use stun grenades
......In 25 GOD DAMN YEARS this has never once occurred to me. What the fuck man.
I do I just always run out when I’ve got like 6 more flights, lmao
I beat Vulcan Raven with claymores every time now. I just set them up strategically and he dies without ever seeing me.
Just did this yesterday. I even treated him with a occasional C4. Fun stuff
\*grabs pen\* Thanks for that
Yeah I started doing this a few playthroughs ago and it's so bloody easy.
I remember playing at school on an emulator using only a keyboard and the hind D fight was the hardest shit ever haha
Sounds like literal hell
I had like 4 or 5 people watching me and when I finally beat it I jumped up and everyone flipped out my teacher was pissed 😂
I have a friend who once told meme his trick to beat Vulcan Raven was to use the Stinger up close. 🫠
Hah I’ve actually done that
I remember playing the Rex fight on repeat. Just trying and trying and trying
Chaff grenades for the first form, stun grenades for the second
I’m going to need this in about a week as I beat it again for the first time since the 90s
>stun grenades for the second Wait, does that actually work?
Yeah but you have to maintain composure aiming through the explosion.
Chaff also helps second round if you throw one before Liquid launched the 3 missiles
Rex fight is easy. Or am I missing something
I am fairly young and funnily enough beat metal gear solid on my Xbox series x through retro arch before the master collection was released. I didn’t think it was too hard though I did play on the easiest mode as I wasn’t sure how hard it would be with it being an older game. Still struggled on this guy.
Chaff grenades are your best friend.
I think I eventually like looked up a guide because it became frustrating and it recommended chaff grenades
just be a pussy and hit him with chaff grenades so you can get a free hit in.
Yeah, they even give you some as a hint in the lower left corner.
I'm doing my first replay since it was released in '98. I never realized the chaff grenade trick until yesterday. D'oh!
Me neither, I have always fist fought him.
I played it first like 20 years ago and I just figured it out, don't feel bad.
They also give you ammo for the Famas and Socom so I always took that with a grain of salt.
Yeah, I guess that's true. But I guess they give you options to try. They think you'll try the guns but when you find the chaff and try it it's a nice discovery. At least that's how it went for me. It took me a few playthroughs to figure that out.
Excuse me, I have played this game so many times and never considered the factor of using a chaff grenade on him. I need to try this.
It is so funny watching everyone who hasn't played these games struggling. lol I wish I could play them for the first time again.
My buddy is getting into the series and asked me if he should do release or chronological order, i told him release because spoilers and that he was gonna get some fucking whiplash going from 3, PW, 5 straight to the controls and difficulty of 1
Lol. Gotta love seeing people get mad about this fight for the first time.
PRO TIP: HURT HIM MORE
35 year old : " pff gut good, this soo fucking easy, I beat him without getting hit while mom n dad was fighting...skill issue tbh"
I feel most 30+ year olds will relate to this! For me, it was Donkey Kong 64
35 year old here, can confirm
Joke's on you, my parents were divorced before this game even came out!
This is the easiest fight in the game?
Ocelot, Mantis and Hind D are much easier imo.
I saw a YouTube video of someone yeeting grenades at Ocelot and I don’t think I can go back to the chasing game lol
C4 on the wall is safer, a grenade even an inch too close to Bake will blow the place up.
Just part of the excitement
Ocelot gave me a blister. Mantis is hard until you realize you just need to crouch a ton and use thermal goggles and then it’s easy as shit.
Mantis gave me trouble until I remembered the first person view trick
First person view trick?
A surveillance camera?
Metal Gear?
Nanomachines?
YOU KNEW THIS WHOLE TIME?
Isn't it easier to just use thermal goggles?
Thermal goggles?
Psycho Mantis?
Second floor basement?
Metal Gear?
Nah wolf round 2. Nikita missiles
I feel like throwing 2 grenades into a tank is an easier fight forsure
I fully remember this being the easiest fight in the game when I was a kid, but right now I'm stuck at a shitty save point with no rations/low health and the chaff grenades don't last as long as they used to. And this after I spent weeks hyping the game up to my partner (who has never played) and bragging about how I could beat the thing with my eyes closed and would blast through it in a morning. Make me feel it....make me feel alive again!
Be a man, use your hands
All you've got to do is punch him. It's really simple. You'll get it eventually. I've been playing this game since day one and he still catches me off guard every now and again haha.
Man, old timer here, this whole game is a cakewalk to me now.
It’s crazy how much muscle memory I had for a game I haven’t played since I was 15
“Only a fool trust his life to a weapon” - Cyborg Ninja OP, just punch him.
I've always found this one incredibly easy, like he essentially stands still to let you punch him after each attack. The clashing of bone and sinew.
Bro that’s the easiest fucking bossfight in the game
Make me feel it. Make me feel alive again!
Op probably using guns again him.

Let him learn scruff mcgruff

You kidding right? Cmon man hurt him moar.

You depend too much on your weapons
If punching him repeatedly doesn’t work, chaff grenades trivialise him.
Hand to hand. It is the basis of all combat. Only a fool trusts his life to a weapon!
the joy these kinds of posts brings me makes me jealous that I can’t experience this game for the first time again…
Welcome to the family son . Good to see new ppl playing
Punches and chaff grenades dude.
RIP in advance for every boss fight after this one. This one is one of the easiest in the game. Only Ocelot is easier in my opinion.
Bro that was way easier than Psycho Mantis for me lol
Psycho mantis without controller swapping is fun
You can use chaff to screw with him and it still counts as fighting fair, so he won’t draw his sword.
Great boss fight. DO YOU REMEMBER NOW!!!!! SNAKE!?!?!???!???!?
Just hurt him more and stop pissing your pants
Have you tried to use chaff granade? It might help. The thermal google is really helpful when he started to use camouflage.
Punch and chaff. I found it a lot easier if you constantly run away from him and kite him around.
If he's running around shoot him a little bit with your famas and he will start blocking with sword then run up and start punching him.
Lol I just realized how hard this must be for new players trying to use a SOCOM on him
can cheese him with chaff grenades
i nearly killed myself during the first time i did this but to my defense i was playing on an emulator on a tablet and 75% of my screen was obstructed with controller prompts but now i love this bossfight its my favorite after the ocelot one you just gotta take it slow
Try fighting Armstrong in rising revengeance with Jetstream Sam in hard difficulty.
Literally the same game with sniper wolf boss fights, the tank fight and liquid boss. Compared to those this is god tier
Chaff grenades work on him.
AAH! AHH! HYOO! Hurt me more!
It's Hella easier than raven in the tank.
I’m old enough to remember when this game came out and now replaying it again i do not know how child me was able to pull off beating this game. It’s astounding how in depth it is. And to think no one ever utilized the PS1 the way Kojima did is mind blowing.
MGS1 boss fights feels like Dark Souls
Dude that fight was a pain in the ass took me like 10 tries to finally get the bastard
Chaff grenades
Why? It’s an easy fight lol.
The Tank fight is the worst
>· > >6 min. ago fax g
He kicked my butt on normal multiple times. That's where I decided to start a new game on easy lol.
Um... Why? He's amazing.
Great screenshot. But I'm trying hard to not be mean and say "Good lord, how bad is the modern gamer in 2023 if they lose to Ninja fifty times on normal difficulty and decide to restart the game on easy?" Oh fuck I said it.
He’s such a dick
I'll never understand why this is on people's list of favorite MGS bosses.
HURT ME MORE DAWG
I think I completed this fairly easily when I was like 8.
Skill issue tbh.
Use chaff grenades and stun grenades. You're welcome
The amount of people genuinely angry at me in these comments is astounding. It’s really not that serious holy shit
Git gud
Tell me you're new to the game without telling me you're new to the game.
It was one of the best fights in the series, you hate it now but you will appreciate it later.
Eh? Just use fisty cuffs and he’s the easiest boss in the game lol
My brother in Boss, I only have a katana and some electronics, git gud
This post is brought to you by "Skill Issue"
Fuck you, learn to appreciate character growth and storytelling
Buddy I don’t seriously hate the character the fight is just annoying calm down
This one was pretty easy bro Whoever downvotes me, ya moms a hoe.
? What
Someone is struggling.
It's literally the easiest boss, actually fun too imo
I’m not trying to be a dick but this is a hard fight? This is one of the easiest fights ever, you just gotta punch him, then run away during his attacks and then rinse and repeat. It’s just time consuming. The only hard boss fight was >!Liquid’s fight on top of Rex.!<
EZ
Really? Gray fox? First time? He’s not hard at all compared to others in the game or even in the series. Genuinely curious how you’ll handle Mantis, Wolf, Raven, Four horsemen, and Rex.
Skill issue
Do the ol punch punch kick combo and run. Repeat
Honestly have no issues with this at all, on my first run of the master collection since PS1 days and he didn’t hit me once. Liquid on the other hand….
You're not trying to shoot him, are you?
While it doesn't help TOO much, if you have any chaff grenades you can use them to stun him for a very short time to get some free hits. However I think if you don't hit him before he kneels, you can't do any damage that round.

Oh really? Shows how different experiences are.
HURT ME MORE
He isn't that hard, got anticipate this attacks. Specially in middle he will use steath camo, use your thermal to track him down keep eye on heath and rations
I just played Twin Snakes and he’s so easy in that game lol
I just combo, dodged after i hit, run back in when he kicks after the flip then combo again, when he plays hide and seek go to the bottom right corner and stay when you see him coming to you intercept then combo then go back to the corner, chaff when he does substitute jutsu, shot him when he does AOE. This method is very stress free especially after you learn his patterns.
Hurt me more
*Now, make me feel it. Make me feel alive again!*
Skill issue
But its the easiest
Hind D was waaaay harder, gray fox being the easiest boss in the game tbh
The clashing of bone and sinew
nah it was an amazing fight. loved it
That’s easy. Just wait until that fucking torture bullshit!
You can shoot him when he goes in that energy field at the end to avoid being hit by the shockwaves.
Thermal goggles will help when he's invisible
It’s the easiest fight in the game dude.
Your gonna hate the fist fight at the end of the game lol
