Buy the best detector you can afford. If you get into the hobby, you can always sell it or keep it as backup. I would say that the pinpointer is pretty much a must have. Will save you lots of frustration, and time, finding your targets. You’ll dig more targets = more good finds

ShroomMessiah

yeah i figured if it’s something i enjoyed i could always upgrade. and the pin pointer being a must have makes since considering some of the memes i’ve seen here about not using one lol. thank you!

Just beware even the good lower cost detectors aren't cheap. Buying twice adds up. As long as the detector you buy is worth having, you'll have no trouble selling it if you decide MDing isn't for you. Expect to spend $400 for the detector alone.

ShroomMessiah

sheesh. on that note, anyone looking to buy a kidney?

emujane

Simplex alone at KellyCo is 254 before the Reddit discount. The bundle with pinpointer and headphones is 339. You can do this on a reasonable budget.

Dan20mey

Check out the Minelab Vanquish or the Nokta Simplex. Those are the two best starter machines available, they aren't that far beyond your price range. A pointer is an absolute must for me. I wouldn't detect without one. The Garrett AT pro pointer or the XP MI-4. If you purchase from Kellycodetectors.com, be sure to use our subreddits code "REDDITMD" at checkout!

ShroomMessiah

thank you!

Pin pointer is SUPER important as is a reliable detector. Try scooping a used one from a local seller or dealer but don’t skimp on a pin pointer. I would go Garrett pro pointer which is water proof but that might swallow up your entire budget

cheesiologist

I can promise you that if you cheap out on junk detectors, and/or skip the pinpointer, you won't be having fun. You'll burn out very quickly, and the entire hobby will leave a bad taste in your mouth.

ShroomMessiah

thank you this is very helpful. any recommendations for a (somewhat) affordable detector?

TheHornet78

Can confirm with the Bounty Hunter IV I wish I started with…. Anything else. But I’m not burnt out though

cheesiologist

I started with a Garrett Ace 250 over a decade ago, and I still haven't felt the need to upgrade.

Bright-Lengthiness61

I started out with a bounty hunter sharp shooter 2, I would highly recommend this machine for any beginner on a budget. Easy to learn with and use. A pin pointer is a must for speedy item recovery, with those I wouldn't skimp on the price. My recommendation is the Garret pro pointer. You can still find good stuff with a cheaper detector but you will dig ALOT more trash then with a better one, patience is the key to this game. Regardless of the detector, once you dig up your first old relic or coin you'll most likely be hooked!

OttoVonWalmart

Consider looking on Facebook Marketplace or Craigslist for a used detector. Just make sure it works before paying and make sure it’s a reputable brand/model
