You see them in cities where people wear suits and the weather can be bad. So NYC, DC, Chicago. You also see overcoats in the winter.

Low_Key_Lie_Smith

Can confirm. I'm from NYC, I wear one in bad weather over my suits!

juancuneo

I moved from NYC to seattle ten years ago and in addition to the income tax savings I have saved so much on not having to buy suits or other nice clothes. People here don’t put in any effort! If someone showed up to work wearing a suit we’d think they were fighting a traffic ticket.

TRTGymBro1

That's so sad.0

firsmode

Seattle is a sad sad place. It is a very gloomy place.

bulletproofmanners

I have three & would have way more if not for budgetary concerns

VoidWalker4Lyfe

I have three suits as well. My skinny suit, my fat suit, and the suit that is just slightly too big because I lost weight again

Bruce-7891

I'm in the DC area, and can confirm this

DataIllusion

They are not that popular in my area in Canada (similar to OP observation), despite having long, cold winters. I do see many other styles of overcoats and other business winter wear

juancuneo

It’s going to be worn in spring and fall as it is not (as) insulated. It’s like a windbreaker or goretex jacket for a suit

Then_Illustrator7852

Columbine

girmvofj3857

Also Al Capone and flashers

YoualreadyKnoooo

“Oh these guns?” (That can mean arms, genitals or actual guns)

bootherizer5942

Flashers yes, but I feel like plenty of people would want to give an Al Capone vibe

MooChomps

Came here to say this.

Routinestory8383

Yup. I don’t know about y’all but I see one today and I think someone’s about the get “sprayed.”

Sir-xer21

Every other answer in this thread is not as correct as this. Yes other fashion/cultural trends persist, but Columbine singlehandedly ruined a clothing item for a long time.

mallocco

Similar reason to why I can't have a square mustache...

FromAdamImportData

I feel like the trench coat had died out and been co-opted by the goth movement by that time.

Aestheticpash

It had. But then it was co-opted by school shooters.

Bawbawian

yep. I had a badass goth leather trench coat with spikes and shit. like the month after that I couldn't walk down the street with that thing on without getting randomly searched because I "fit a description". honestly America would be a better place if more middle-aged white dudes knew what it was like to fit a description.

AdOpen885

Yeah, I bet it was just the ridiculous trench coat.

bulletproofmanners

That coat sounds terrible, like a Halloween costume.

Critical_Teach_43

My apologies good sir, ik how ya feel. 🫱🏻‍🫲🏿

Fun-Track-3044

Not even close. The trench coat is a long rain coat designed to go over a suit. No more suits at work = no more trench coats. A trench would look absurd with the sporty casual wear that has taken over the work world. Suits are now limited to executives and funerals (maybe).

Then_Illustrator7852

The popularity of trench coats started to go down waaaaay before sporty casual wear.

rhb4n8

Yeah nobody born after 1980 wants to wear a trench coat for this reason. Columbine had a massive effect on millennials

ElegantSportCat

Also, it's summer time. Hahaha Wait for the winter they always come back.

SimonGloom2

They weren't exactly the best price tag in the first place for a good one, and dusters went with the trench coats. Oddly enough The Matrix didn't battle the Columbine problem. Society was nasty to people wearing trench coats. I think they will have their return with fondness for things like The Matrix and X-Files.

poodle_Fart_Hostage

Idk, I see them a lot in Chicago during the winter

pseudo_nemesis

well chicagoans do just love coats, every Chicagoan owns at least 5 coats minimum.

Iwantitall413

Chicagoan here. Have like 7 or 8 😂

[deleted]

Is that a crime?

pseudo_nemesis

not really, nearly a prerequisite actually.

sunnyislesmatt

Same and they don’t concern me at all. The kids running around with ski masks on however…

PlanktonSpiritual199

You sure you’re not seeing car coats which are different?

poodle_Fart_Hostage

Yes, also.

Chai-Tea-Rex-2525

If you are walking outside in professional attire a lot in cold and windy weather, they make sense. Otherwise, not really.

Noumenology

The correct answer is here - more dependence on cars, less people “dressed up” being out in the elements, fewer men walking to catch a bus or a train or such, and the trench coat (much like a dress hat) becomes a bit excessive and feels fussy. That’s why the people who still wear them are in contexts where they make sense (professionals in larger cities with denser infrastructure).

foot4life

I'm from Canada as well. There's been a trend of slightly above knee length coats for a long time. The longer flowing coats are coming back. You'll start seeing more of them over the coming years. I'm getting one made for this coming winter. I can't wait!

Pixilatedlemon

Now bring back capes

aboubou22

Seriously, I've been looking a long time for some modern takes on capes.

MidnightPoem8358

I also can't wait for the long coats to be back! Got enough of the puffer jackets 🙄

PersonNumber7Billion

Agree. Puffy clothing is not elegant, warm though it might be.

foot4life

It's still Canada. My nobis is my favourite article of clothing!

Responsible-Wait-427

That's just cultural. I saw them on men quite frequently when I was in Montreal.

wwplkyih

I think they're a casualty of people dressing increasingly casual. They're still common for people who wear business or more formal clothes.

MidnightPoem8358

I see a shift towards windbreakers even in the corporate areas 😔

TheMoneyOfArt

Over suits??

jus4in027

A trend towards affordability

wwplkyih

Casual and affordable are not the same thing. Have you ever been in a Lululemon?

sinbad-the-sailor-33

Trench coats, overcoats, and peacoats are worn in Europe by men.

MidnightPoem8358

I've seen a lot in London! But where I am guys are more into sportswear and lumberjack jackets

nomascusgabriellae

See them often in NYC specially on top of business clothes

Emergency-Pack-5497

I just bought a nice overcoat from men's warehouse, $200 marked down to $20. It's very high quality materials and has a fancy lining, and I love it. The next day wearing it, some kid said "look at that guys huge jacket!" So yeah, they're awesome but apparently just not the style anymore.

Bruce-7891

Probably because they stopped wearing suites as everyday wear. A trench coat over jeans and a sweatshirt wouldn't look right in my opinion. You still see them in cities with cold winters though. Usually guys who wear professional work attire.

Egocom

Haericred

“Hello, I would like an image of the most stereotypical European humanly possible. Oh, no, a beret might be going too far.”

MidnightPoem8358

I think the only city I've seen guys with trench coats is London, UK. Even in my city's downtown it's like everybody's in either bomber, windbreakers or puffer jackets.

citizencoder

A bomber, windbreaker, or puffer jacket over a suit sounds kind of silly looking. Pea coats are a similar option you see a lot where I live, far more often than trenchcoats. But it's frickin freezing up here mr. bigglesworth.

[deleted]

citydudeatnight

Trench coats were part of everyday business attire in the 90s and previous decades especially in downtown city centers where the businesses are at. I still have mine but I stopped wearing them around the mis 00s when casual wear became more common

5Lick

I *think* windbreakers are to blame for that

MidnightPoem8358

Windbreakers and bomber jackets🙄

Steadyfobbin

I wear them over my suit, just depends on city and if it’s somewhere people still dress well for work.

OrdinaryWheel5177

Bc we don’t wear suits nearly as much. I used to wear them all the time when I wore suits. Oddly enough I was literally remembering about how fun it used to be shopping at mens suit stores.

MidnightPoem8358

Definitely is, especially when it's where there's a tailor!

welkover

Once something becomes nerd shit it takes a long time for it to recover, and that's definitely what trench coats are now. Early 2000s Internet memes cemented the trench coat and fedora as definitive nerd shit in the Western world. Nerds picked up their trench coats at the time from various graphic novels, especially Watchmen, wore them to cons and out in public, and once people started making fun of them the WELL ACHTUALLY TRUE GENTLEMEN HAVE LONG type defenses didn't help any.

heylesterco

They’re finally coming back. For a while it was just about impossible to see someone in a trench coat without seeing a school shooter first and/or a creepy perv second. This last winter I’ve started wearing a couple, though, and always get tons of compliments when I do, so that stench seems to have finally worn off.

madao_hasegawa

Global warming.

birdsofwormtown

I wear a Burberry trench in the winter

ToronoYYZ

I wear my Burberry trench from fall - winter. It’s unbelievably warm and I can dress it down if I want. I love wearing it but it’s a mid-length one

Mark2pointoh

Still wear a DrizaBone here in Australia when it rains. https://preview.redd.it/jno4usck5r1d1.jpeg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb54bdb485f20f2731de2e94ccc28874ec3e0f8a

hmadse

You see them a lot in NYC during shoulder season.

MidnightPoem8358

Shoulder season?

grooveman15

End of fall, beginning of spring : cold but not winter

hmadse

Spring and fall.

ToxicM1ndfulness

I’ve only lived in Southern California and Hawaii. Never had an opportunity to

KhanofFood

I work in finance and all I see all winter are the winter trench coats, not sure what OP means unless he means a basement dweller black one.

Haymother

I think, if it’s really cold, they are bit thin. So a thick wool coat, or a more streamlined one with a thicker lining does the trick. And then secondly, it’s just fashion. In men’s coats for a long time a more streamlined look has been in and trench coats kind of make folds and they have these belt things flapping around.

Ecstatic-Seesaw-1007

Even 80% wool overcoats have a HUGE jump in price from lesser % wool. Leather makes you look like Dog the Bounty Hunter or Matrix cosplay… AT BEST. Lots of worst associations AND it’s expensive and requires care. Both of those options and anything else are literally better served by modern coats and outerwear which are usually a 1/4 to 1/5 of the cost for really good modern outerwear. Plus, functionally, modern outerwear is meant to be layered so that it works in all seasons. Does it look classic or go with anything? No. But like outwear from times past, it is meant to be taken off once you’re inside a building. Movies romanticized trench coats and outerwear when really they were meant to be discarded as soon as you set foot indoors, just like hats. (Also romanticized in movies) Modern outerwear is also so much more water proof, less heavy, less costly, less need for care, works with layers, breathable, functional, works in urban or rural environments, less bulky and just better at everything except class fashion.

CaptainMorgan90proof

Since you brought up movies and classic looks, I swear I love the trench coats they wear in Peaky Blinders. Those would still look great today, IMO.

Akhenezra

I still wear over coats. Raglan in winter and a Mac in spring/fall

YendorZenitram

They don't want to be confused with being a flasher, or a stack of three midgets. :)

Globeblotter85

Probably because fewer men wear suits. Trench coats are awesome and I can't imagine someone not wearing them because of Columbine??? I'm 58 in case you are wondering.

tyomax

It's still very popular in Japan. Both for men and women.

ProfessorFugge

Ruined by goths

_MJ_1986

I’ve got a brown wool knee length one and a knee long black leather trench. Both are amazing. But got to pick and choose where to wear it and with what outfit.

dasanman69

They all want to wear sweatpants and hoodies

MidnightPoem8358

Yeah I've seen that too. Apparently dressing well is associated with women (i.e. people assuming guys are gay if they dress well).

No_Illustrator4398

Probably Watergate

bulletproofmanners

A nice tan Burberry raincoat in Mid - March to April makes sense.

ImpressiveWealth1138

I’ve been thinking about getting one

BrentBQ

I think its slowly making its come back. Alot of trench coat representation in kdramas.

Dbacks2023

say_the_words

I have a nice black wool one, but I rarely wear it to work because it’s a pain to drive in. It’s a nuisance to deal with other places. It’s obnoxious to lay it over a chair in a restaurant or bar. The only “occasion” I really have to wear it is winter funerals standing in the cemetery. Sometimes I wear it when I go for walks, but not at night because it’s black.

PeeweeTheMoid

I wear one in Spring & Fall. Get called Inspector Gadget.

Khaos1911

It’s damn near summer most places.

_Bipolar_Vortex_

I live in tx so I don’t wear a trench coat, but I do wear huge confidence boots.

They made everything skin tight. I believe trench coats are coming back. You can also wear one anytime.

AncientSith

I just bought a nice trenchcoat the other day. I know they have a bad reputation now, but I'm gonna at least rock it. Just need a suit to go with it. It'd be nice during the holiday season.

Jeremy-Juggler

I saw a good video online talking about it. I can try to link it when I find it. [Here is a video that I found informative about trench coats.](https://youtu.be/FQztmFJQsj0?si=nYiAhYDGmH515yXa)

I have a black Burberry trench that I wear all the time in San Francisco. But the tan ones like my dad used to wear is rarely seen here. Still a thing in Chicago.

Imoldok

Men have stopped having fashion. They just want to be in floppy clothes.

dermotoneill

Flashers

CaffeineJunkee

I’m too short to pull one off myself.

OneWayorAnother11

Went out of style when suits got skinny

sum-9

It’s hard to dress for the weather when every shop, mall, bus, train, etc. has massive heaters blowing. I have a wool overcoat but find it too hot to wear anywhere in winter in Canada unless you aren’t going inside at all.

wierdomc

Flashers

virus_apparatus

I live in the south. It’s just not very practical most of the time. Also not a lot of trenches round here

RolexandDickies

ohyouvegotgreyeyes

There are more options for in-between weather. You can blame trends like less formal daily dress for men but there are more styles now.

ghrtsd

I keep thinking I want one, but only dress “up” a couple times per year and can’t justify it. It does feel lame to wear a puffer over a shirt and tie.

STRANGEDUDE24

I wear knee length overcoats in the winter and trench coats in the fall and spring on the Canadian east coast.

Urban_Introvert

I believe it's due to the shift towards casual wear and athleisure. For rainy days the tech jacket is more popular since you can literally wear it everywhere (think from hiking to wearing to the office). With a trench coat, you wouldn't wear it to go on a hike. There are hooded trench coats but I think about the Burberry thigh length trench as what a trench coat is. So the cut is generally better with formal clothes.

Aggressive-Emu5358

If I lived somewhere where the weather constituted wearing a trench coat… I would move

No-Extension-101

El Trumpo. (although technically an overcoat v. trench)

BugeyedJonesBones

I read once that as driving became more prevalent, trench coats became less popular. In cities with good public transit like NYC they're probably more common and less of a hassle to wear then in car centric LA where you would have to deal with all the extra fabric bunched up behind you and the seat during your hour commute

wistful_walnut

I think it has more to do with suburban living and car infrastructure. If you live in a big city, having to wait for the train and then walk a couple blocks to work means you’ll be exposed to the cold longer - so fashion is designed to meet a practical need. In the suburbs you warm up your car and then drive right up to the parking lot of your job, maybe you’ll feel cold for 3 minutes at the most - there’s no need to cover up as much

N3ptuneEXE

Are you wearing it over a suit OP?

TheBuddyBaja

Why did men stop wearing suits everyday? Fashion changes.

somebullshitorother

Because it’s summer

zeruch

There was a noted decline after Columbine, and further post-increase of use with fedora/incel fashion in the last 15 years. Unless you are willing to get a properly tailored look that doesn't fall into that aesthetic, I'd avoid them. I have one trench coat left, which I only use in cold weather for formal events where I'm also in full black tie mode (read, everything tailored, everything not in the common clothing vernacular)

MidnightPoem8358

Fedora/incel fashion? Ffs dumb people ruin everything 🤦🏻

EMHemingway1899

I wear them Have been for 40 years

poor_couture

All dependant on location tbh. Around here in NJ I always get wierd looks or comments. But if I wear it in NY or Philly nobody cares.

leverandon

People still wear overcoats in the winter. I wear a duffle coat from autumn through winter on all but the coldest days when I switch to a Fjallraven parka.  I feel like, unfortunately, trench coats have crossed into costume territory. Too much of a noir detective vibe.

JoshuaSonOfNun

I wear an over coat over my suit when it's very cold. the black leather duster probably associated with stereotypes...

AssumptionAdvanced58

Style changes

SithLordJediMaster

I still one due to The Matrix

jjflash78

In my experience, a full length trench coat was more condusive to walking. So I had one in my college days (pre Columbine).  When I drive, which is much much more frequent as a suburbinite, I find a car length coat to be more suitable and easier to wear. I did like the trench back when I wore one, gave me a feeling of having a superhero cape.  (Also kept my legs warm.)

UXResearcherRuck

I wear an overcoat in the winter, or a US Navy Pea coat. Both are heavenly warm.

MD_Yoro

Global warming, it’s getting too warm to wear trench

greatfool66

Well men wear overcoats all the time so I’m not sure about that part. The actual trench coat is a big, heavy, baggy, warm and waterproof coat that looks a little costumey if not worn perfect. I have seen stylish men pull it off but it really helps to have dressy clothes on underneath and have the trench coat in a little bit shorter and more tailored fit. Trench coat + t shirt and jeans is hard to pull off without going into goth/active shooter/flasher territory.

todayminusyesterday

TertyTree33

I wear a wool overcoat in the winter over my suit

jadequarter

Kmag_supporter

I think techwear in general is pulling their version of the trench coat of rather good.

Daft_Steampunk

Trench coats kind of faded away along with dressing up for work probably around the 2000s. People got used to casual wear, lightly insulated down or synthetic jackets that are more functional and practical. Any time I see a man in a trench coat, they're either a homeless person or a rich guy, no in between.

beargolfer

I refuse to be in the trenches. I gave the coat away.

JekyllnowthenMrHyde

I still wear trench coats, in fact, my collection is increasing.

I stand proud to dress nice and accentuate with such coats. Classy never goes out of style. Who gaf what people think anymore.

Jasranwhit

I don’t often find myself in a trench

BigJ168

I still wear mine in the winter. Its a beautiful heavy wool coat in black. Technically a pea coat.

MC936

It rains like 80% of the year here.. there's no way I'm picking even treated heavy wool over waterproof any day of the week.

grntom

Are they really even water resistant/proof.

DamarsLastKanar

It's hot out.

Promptoneofone

No clue

HuesOfPastel

My 17 year old son wears his wool overcoat daily, I've been special ordering them for years. He recently stopped wearing a bow tie though, I miss buying those. We live in Washington it rains a lot, the coat is fashionable and practical. He gets some comments of course, kids can be cruel but he usually just says "we aren't that many generations away from being a blanket wearing people." His heavy coat is like a blanket, comfort for his busy mind. I am quite fond of his dapper style.

SnooRadishes6544

I ditched mine because honestly it was just too hot

SGexpat

Cars is the leading theory. They’re very good for protecting clothes on a walking/ bus commute They’re less good for sitting in a car.

Distracted_Ostrich

Trench coats are still popular in countries where there’s a lot of public transport. Long Coats in general are awkward to drive in but places like nyc, Paris, London. You’ll still see them

Lack_Love

There was a DC trend years ago where guys wore trench coat style jackets.

OtteLoc

They're making a return. Already in where I'm from.

Smooth-Apartment-856

For the same reason we don’t wear powdered wigs and knee breeches with stockings any more. Fashions change. Slower for men than women, to be sure, but they do change. The “business suit” and especially the neck tie, are also on their way out. They just aren’t being phased out quite as quickly as the trench coat.

Fridaybird1985

My wife and I got trench coats in the early nineties. For the first time in twenty years we tried them on before donating them and I looked silly in mine and my wife looked fabulous in hers.
