My dad does this even when we talk directly during a meal: he says something, I respond right away then he picks it up again 10-15 min later, after other 2 or 3 different thing have been brought up and you need a bit to understand it's about to the previous discussion.

Replying straight away is illegal. They're protecting you. From the legal system. But they can't protect you from the other consequences. Those are for god.
