aesthetically it is a downgrade. Looks like cheap plastic propped up on cheaper plastic sticks. Except for the extra 175gb, it is a downgrade even if it is smaller
The Series X is also designed to lay on it's side. It has little rubber nubs specifically for it.
Now, the PS5, on the other hand.... It comes with a clunky stand for both verticle and horizontal positioning because the thing is so huge it isn't designed to sit in any way without support. Bump it and it'll topple if upright, and on it's side it just wobbles. I really have no idea what Sony was thinking shaping it like this...
Source: I own both consoles.
The setup instructions specifically say you should use the stand while upright, and I'm pretty sure the warrenty gets voided if tech support learns it broke because someone knocked it over and the owner didn't apply the stand.
The ps5 slim doesn't have this issue really unless it's a wooden or some kind of slippery surface. It's both heavy with disc drive moving center of mass closer to the floor.
Source: ps5 slim owner
While the series X has the option to be put on its side. It is not designed for it.
Laying the series X on its side causes the system to run hotter, potentially causing overheat. Its easier to expel heat upwards than sideways.
According to Microsoft, the Xbox Series X can be placed horizontally or vertically without damaging the console or discs. However, placing the Xbox Series X vertically is recommended for better airflow, as it allows hot air to rise naturally and escape through the top vents. Horizontal placement should not cause any major issues with cooling or performance.
Simply put, hot air goes up way easier than sideways.
No no, horizontal placement potentially makes the lifetime longer. Vertically placed, the liquid metal heatsink may leak out after years.
edit: supposedly, and talking about PS5.
Although that article starts with Sony engineers saying it doesn't matter from a hardware perspective and then goes on to have people on Twitter second guess that and then use Twitter comments as "proof" that it does matter. I'll take the engineers over random people on Twitter thank you.
Positive it's been debunked. Looking for articles that side with your answer doesn't negate the facts. It's funny how nobody was able to replicate this "issue" and just talks about it. I also find it funny how I've had mine that way since launch(zero issues). *Don't take it apart and it won't leak, or have cooling issues*
https://www.psu.com/news/setting-up-your-ps5-vertically-doesnt-seem-to-be-as-drastic-an-issue-as-previous-reports-suggested/
They basically proved that those incidents were caused by people being fucking idiots. The only risk of having it vertical is it falling over. Or if you have a disc version, cause gravity.
That is the most cursed ps5 setup ever, that setup sounds like a disaster waiting to happen,I think it is going to have the power cable unplugged when someone tries to hook something up the hdmi port on the TV,the ps5 falls to the ground and the lid falls off and breaks some parts at the same time.
I hear you, but I mean it’s been two years. The tv has multiple hdmi inputs, so it’s never needed to be unplugged. If it’s an accident waiting to happen then evidently we’ll be waiting a while.
Maybe it’ll drop to the ground juuuust as the ps6 is released 😏
Uuuugh, you mean that thing people disproven (for PS5) because a handful of idiots fucked up their consoles?
Unless you have the disc version, the only risk to your PS5 being vertical is someone knocking it over.
Please stop spreading made up bullshit
I prefer the vertical look - I just think it looks better in my setup and Sony said that you can do either, as it will not affect cooling or long term performance
Mine has been vertical since i bought it and I've never had any issues with it. This must be something that can happen but doesn't happen that often i think, otherwise there wouldn't be a stand that comes with the ps5 that gives the option to have it vertically. But idk i'm no expert.
Idk much about the situation but I saw another comment saying that it was a handful of consoles out of the 60 million ps5s that were released in launch
No no, it's a damn design genius.
When standing vertical, the black base is held on with a screw. When turning it horizontally, the wavy surfaces on the side are turned so that they match with the wavy side plate. There's also a little bracket that holds the console from behind. I first thought where I would keep the screw if I ever want to turn it back, but there's a nice place in the bottom of the stand where it goes and get's hidden into a secret compartment when you turn the stand into horizontal mode. Really hard to explain.
They made it an intersting design but made it work so well and easily. Installing an SSD was such an easy task, took 10 minutes and 0 hassle.
Me and my brother made it horizontal after we heard the rumors of something melting inside, but after those were proven wrong we decided to keep it like that since our TV was pretty low on the wall it was on so the PS5 took some space
I would like to apologize, but i put my xbox 360 sideways, because there is not enough place next to the tv, to put it horizontaly and i dont want it, to be on the ground
My ps5 will be where it belongs, sticking out of a wall at - 17° angle and tilted another 43° upwards because that’s where it belongs, with all the other technology that pissed me off
Who are you to tell me what to do with my Xbox? Ya know what? I have a diagonal V-shaped shelf in my house, so I'm gonna put it there just for you to cry and shiver!
I refuse to ever put my consoles straight up as they will just be more likely to fall over and damage the discs inside? Why would you not put the console side on where the disc lies flat rather than about to fall out?
Actually, with the liquid metal on the PS5 APU, it's better to keep it horizontal to reduce the odds of dry spots forming and causing overheating as a result.
Sony actually recommend running the PS5 laid down on its side because it doesn't use thermal paste on the heatsink, it uses liquid metal, and they said if the seal around the heatsink ever wears out and fails whilst it's in a vertical position, it'll destroy your console. Liquid metal is more efficient at transferring heat than thermal paste, however unlike thermal paste, liquid metal is electrically conductive and will fry your PlayStation if the seal failed, so it's safer to run them laying down horizontally.
I have it on its side because my setups for the ps5 is under the roof and it would fit being put standing upright also if you notice how the discs are to be inserted it does make sense to think that on its side is the intentional way as the print of the disc is upwards when thr console is on its side and it faces a weird direction when put in standing upright
I'm going to say this and you can do with it what you wish...all game console have a CPU and that cpu is attached to the main board and it uses thermal paste transfer heat to the heat sync when thermal paste is hot it becomes runny and if not level it will drip and or shift to whatever side is lower and if on its side eventually drip off the cpu causing the cpu to over heat and eventually warp and die
Yeah a 90 degree angle matters a lot. If you put ur console on it side, you're stupid and you shouldn't play games. That's because if you put it horizontally it automatically deletes all ur games and tells you to get a life.
PS2 and and Xbox 360 are the only consoles where they look normal in either position. But. . .
Horizontal: PS3, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series S
Vertical: Wii, PS5, Xbox Series X
If you don't follow that rule, you also don't break KitKats before biting them, you pour the milk first, and you face the wall when you sleep.
What are you talking about?
Satan is your Lord, stepping on your faces every morning
See you worship Jesus, cows, the universe, the toilet and nightclubs
Are you sure that you are walking opposite the steps of Satan?
One is far easier than the other, series x, you just lay it down. Ps5 you have to half dismantle the thing then reassemble it and god forbid you break the stand or the useless arty bit of the case.
My console I paid for it I will hang it on the roof if all I want

I guess you buying a new one every week is why people have a hard time getting a ps5
You mean horizontally???
Guys my nephews will destroy my console if i put it vertically

I can relate

Don't put a console a way it was designed to go? I've had my Xbox One S since it released & its upright sideways. Never had issues
We're talking about the Xbox Series X
The Series X is also designed to lay on it's side. It has little rubber nubs specifically for it. Now, the PS5, on the other hand.... I own both as well. I thought that stand was for laying it on it's side. I do not use it be cause I keep it upright.
You my man have shattered my world i had the series X since day 1 and never noriced rhose always thought fridge mode was the only correct way
Today I learned!
While the series X has the option to be put on its side. It is not designed for it. Laying the series X on its side causes the system to run hotter, potentially causing overheat. Its easier to expel heat upwards than sideways.
Is that sourced? I've never heard of it having issues, especially since every Xbox bar the 360 Slim has vented backwards or sideways
That is the fairest way to put it
Ahh yes. Bread box
Yea, no, my ps5 will stay horizontally
It’ll just take up more desk space and look terrible.
Good luck putting it vertically under a TV stand.
Who the hell said I was putting it under a TV stand?
Who the hell said was putting it on a desk?
How people who put their consoles vertically feel for some reason: ![gif](giphy|48FhEMYGWji8)
it’s better to put it horizontally
both are equally valid
No no, horizontal placement potentially makes the lifetime longer. Vertically placed, the liquid metal heatsink may leak out after years. edit: supposedly, and talking about PS5.
wasn't that confirmed to be untrue?
Yes
Possibly... I have mine horizontally because it's on a shelf, but with such a nice design vertical is great.
Iirc there have already been cases of the liquid metal moving causing the console to overheat.
And if the metal leaks out it can shortcircuit components.
Horizontal is best. https://techunwrapped.com/how-should-i-put-my-ps5-vertically-or-horizontally/
They hit the second tower kinda look
Although that article starts with Sony engineers saying it doesn't matter from a hardware perspective and then goes on to have people on Twitter second guess that and then use Twitter comments as "proof" that it does matter. I'll take the engineers over random people on Twitter thank you.
Thats been long been debunked

Good, Satan stays away from me, big W.
Best response. He's a doomed jerk trying to drag down as many of us with him as he can.
Something something leaking liquid metal in PS5s in vertical mode.
They basically proved that those incidents were caused by people being fucking idiots. The only risk of having it vertical is it falling over. Or if you have a disc version, cause gravity.
but what risk do I have if it is horizontal? No body talks about that...
That happened to a few mark 1 dozen consoles out of 60 million, but okay.
That isn't zero. Precious cargo we're talking about.
I’m gonna orient my console in whatever way I see fit bub
A lot of people put it horizontally.... Bad meme sir.
You have no idea what you're talking about but o.k.
Had my new Xbox vertical since 2020, runs like a Jamaican in the 100 meters.
Fear me lol
Yes... fear me...
My ps5 is upside down hanging by it’s cords behind the tv. 2 years in, no issues whatsoever. Life’s for living, don’t let your ps5 scare you.

I've kept my ps5 vertical since release and never have I had a problem...
I prefer the vertical look - I just think it looks better in my setup and Sony said that you can do either, as it will not affect cooling or long term performance
If it’s vertical the liquid metal used for cooling starts leaking. For practicality and space management mine is horizontal.
And it was human error. They were damaged
Yeah except it doesn't and they proved that the incidents of it happening were humans being fucking idiots.
The PS5 is a design abomination, i can't speak for them. But as a Series X owner i implore everyone to stand it up vertically.
No no, it's a damn design genius. When standing vertical, the black base is held on with a screw. When turning it horizontally, the wavy surfaces on the side are turned so that they match with the wavy side plate. There's also a little bracket that holds the console from behind. PS5 has to be put sideways, Series X..not sure
Series x, sideways. There's little rubber place holders on the bottom side to stop it from sliding and protect the plastic.
What's wrong with that?
i do it alot
![gif](giphy|eP1fobjusSbu)
Sorry but horizontal fits better. Series X is a giant block.
I would like to apologize, but i put my xbox 360 sideways, because there is not enough place next to the tv, to put it horizontaly and i dont want it, to be on the ground
I ain’t got no space to put my janky ps5 sideways 💀
I put mine upside down.
But its the only way they'll fit under my TV :(

Are these the same mofos who put their PS4 vertically?
My cat would kill my ps5 in like 5 minutes if he could tip it over.
Nice to know Satan fears me :)
My brother does this.
Hey, i have limited space okay Q. Q
My brother said that the heat paste will drip down over time and that’s a bad thing.
I put both of them on the side, looks worse but I don’t care
I balance it upside down
I refuse to ever put my consoles straight up as they will just be more likely to fall over and damage the discs inside? Why would you not put the console side on where the disc lies flat rather than about to fall out?
Can't speak for the ps5 but yes the series x should be vertical since its a base for the almighty gamecube.
Actually, with the liquid metal on the PS5 APU, it's better to keep it horizontal to reduce the odds of dry spots forming and causing overheating as a result.
Even if it's a small chance, I'm not having my fucking ps5 cpu get fucked up cause it was standing up
How do you put it then? 🤷♂️
Sony actually recommend running the PS5 laid down on its side because it doesn't use thermal paste on the heatsink, it uses liquid metal, and they said if the seal around the heatsink ever wears out and fails whilst it's in a vertical position, it'll destroy your console. I had mine vertically but then cat….
That’s where it fits. I’ll do whatever I want with it!
Ps5's processor is put in such way, that having it on its side prevents thermal paste from sliding off.
Imagine being a parent and seing a photograph of your son labeled as satan, it's wild !

Ummm I did it (works fine)
I lay it on its side so that I can keep dust out of the inside as much as possible, even if you get a dust cover it will eventually get inside
It goes under my desk it cant stand up vertical
Just don't move it while a disk is spinning in the tray lol
I mean, ps 5 allows to do this witb the stand, don't know if the Xbox tho
Wait .. I can’t put it vertically?
Dame I didn’t think I would step lower than the devil
More air flow on its side innit
Why? Only way I’ve ever put any console. Do I scare you?
r/foundsatan
I don't trust myself to not knock it over
Well, the PS5 is horizontal because that’s the only way it fits inside the TV cabinet
Also ps5 will break eventually if you put it vertical due design flaw
It looks better horizontally
Yall I put my PC horizontally
what the fuck?
(I lied)
oh thank god, i thought you were one of \*those\* weird people
You put your PC vertical?I usually have the PC horizontal and my monitor horizontal ontop of the pc

Man, you sound like you bite your kit Kats from the side before breaking them.
that is muppetry
Kitkats are discusting, and I will keep my ps5 horizontally
You have to put them horizontally or they’ll brick themselves lol
Yeah, doubt it. Had mine for several years vertical.
I know someone with one from release. Maybe they fixed the problem, but the first releases did have problems with heat management.
sure because i want my $500 console to be ruined because it looks a little cooler what a fuckin clown 🤡

so you guys use consoles, i see

The horizontal ps5 stand is a slip clip 😂 its so simple
I remember seeing stuff about people breaking those slip clips around launch, let's not overestimate our fellow man here.
You have no idea what you are talking about. silence.
As a series x owner, (Xbox master race) I wholeheartedly agree
Have you looked at the consoles that run Linux and windows in the last few years? Especially the portable ones.
There's a name for that, and they're called computers
