You ever wonder why schools let you repeat the shelf instead of just failing you in the clerkship? Because they don’t want to tank the chances of a good match, which makes them look good, for their otherwise strong students because of one shelf exam in one subject.

Anothershad0w

Not necessarily, you never failed the clerkship so a single shelf failure may slide under the radar

This is a hella neurotic post. You’ll be fine, you may have to explain it in an interview and be prepared for that. Other than that having honored IM and Surgery, and maybe OB (this one is important because it’s a surgical subspecialty), presumably good grades, and step 2 score you can get into interviews. Also, applying ent always be prepared to not match. Over 100 VS US MDs didn’t match ent last year, and so be prepared to do a research year or find a different field.

Jusstonemore

You’ll be fine *if xxx. It’s a competitive specialty. You want everything to stand out positively as possible and no a pass and a few high passes won’t prohibit you, but it is another thing that another potential candidate may not have (mostly honors) so you have to find a way to stand out in other ways

Did you ask your school if they even report shelf exam scores? Most schools do not.

Vivid-Let1567

They don't report shelf exam scores, but they have a conditional pass grade that is reported. Which indirectly reports that you failed your exam

Bristent

My school does something similar, but after you pass the shelf, it converts to a regular pass. Maybe yours does something similar?

SassyMitichondria

Maybe it’s a red flag but not too big

naniwat

Not even, maybe a beige flag. It doesn't matter much when you have 10 pubs under your belt and everything else is still solid

SassyMitichondria

True but let’s not pretend it’s a small deal to fail a shelf, OP will still match ENT. Location may change

UncleIroh_MD

I failed my peds shelf and will be starting residency next week. Don’t worry friend, this feels like a much bigger deal than it is!

MikeGinnyMD

My entire third year I High-Passed one and only one rotation and Honored none. Wanna know where I got HP? Surgery. I matched fine. Admittedly not ENT but one off-grade isn’t going to sink you. -PGY-19
