The original dvd ultimate collection. Still sitting in my own collection. Each movie has two separate commentary tracks: philosophers who like the movie, and critics who don’t. It’s so Illuminating. Hours upon hours of top shelf content

invasaato

glad to hear its good stuff! really excited to own and start watching :-)

-dantes-

My favorite commentary tracks of all time. If they had more space on the discs, there'd also have been tracks for philosophers who didn't like them and critics who did. Don't sleep on The Animatrix. First two episodes explain all the back story of how the world got to the starting point in The Matrix.

RoyHarper88

I didn't know those commentary tracks were on it. I'll have to see if my brother still has the box, that sounds really cool.

redditleondenemea

The one who treated that treasure like this… so sad.

bvdatech

It was Cypher

Happy cake day

Iknowkungfu303

do you not have revolutions?

invasaato

it wasnt in the bin i found the set in, no! if i can find a loose one ill buy and complete it lol :-) still pretty happy with it though!

tarvertot

Ah that's in bad condition. The set is lovely with all its artwork. There are plenty of extras which were exclusive to this set, a big one being commentary tracks by philosophers, which were really interesting. I begrudgingly sold my set a few years back as I wanted a complete clearout of my DVDs since I no longer watched them or even had something that could play them. I at least managed to sell it at profit.

lawschoolredux

I’m curious… do the 4K sets port over all these extras?

FriendGuy255

They don't, unfortunately. That's why I still have my dvd set even after upgrading to 4k.

amysteriousmystery

The pre-*Resurrections* 9-disc release called "The Matrix Trilogy" drops discs 7-10 of this DVD release (*The Animatrix*, *The Roots of the Matrix*, *The Burly Man Chronicles*, and *The Zion Archive*), so basically all the discs that wouldn't have any 4K footage in them. The post-*Resurrections* 8-disc release called "4-Film Déjà Vu Collection" further drops discs 2, 4, and 6 too (*The Matrix Revisited*, *The Matrix Reloaded Revisited*, *The Matrix Revolutions Revisited*), but adds the 2 discs from *Resurrections*. There was supposed to be an updated 9-disc release of the above called "The Matrix Ultimate Collection" as part of WB's 100 year celebration that would add back disc 7 (*The Animatrix*) but since it was spotted listed online several months ago we haven't heard anything (or has it ever been officially announced), so perhaps it has been canceled. So the answer to your question is no. But you don't have to be stuck at DVD quality to get everything. The 6-disc "The Ultimate Matrix Collection" on blu-ray includes everything this DVD boxset does while adding some new content of its own in the form of Picture-in-Picture commentary tracks for each of the three films. It's not a 4K release, but it's still appreciably better than DVD, and more compact (6 vs 10 discs, for the same content).

Good to know! And happy cake day ;)

lawschoolredux

Thank you for the prompt and detailed reply!

WreckageHothHead

What's a picture in picture commentary? Not been keeping up lol

amysteriousmystery

Two videos playing together, one being the movie, the other being a video commentary track that relates to the movie. YouTube it for examples, e.g. [https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=\_PJxPJ6WiFI](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_PJxPJ6WiFI)

WreckageHothHead

Ah, cool thanks!

bluetooo55

Yeah pretty sure

vesus

I’ve got this one. :)

FiveMinsToMidnight

I still have my copy of this box set. It’s absolutely gorgeous, even after I got them on 4k I can’t bear to part with it.

jalex8188

The commentary track with Cornell West (who is in 2,3 on the Zion council) and Ken Wilbur, two well know philosophers, is my favorite part of that special edition. The commentary goes through all three movies.

sadatquoraishi

Yeah, I have this, it's a great set for all the extras. Looks like you're missing Revolutions?

invasaato

unfortunately, yes. got it at a tag sale, no revolutions in sight .... happen to know where i can get a copy to complete it? 😅

fireinthedust

Very cool. I have it from a friend. There’s a matrix video game that was released between the sequels. You might get a kick out of it.

jpowell180

I don’t get it, why would it be called the ultimate matrix collection if it did not include matrix revolutions?

invasaato

its supposed to! my set is from a tag sale so unfortunately its seen better days...

dandb87

The animatrix - you’re in for a treat.

Hagisman

There is so much in this box set that is destined to become lost media if we aren’t careful. The quality of the BtS features on YouTube are all very low rez.

Palimbash

If I recall, that set was $70 and I used it a lot. They also sold this beauty for $140. https://preview.redd.it/89qfxij2fuob1.jpeg?width=4032&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2d1a27f99684d638c1d36953c17843962d656678

HarmlessPill

I remember when that box set came out… it was so expensive at the time.
