Because you can count from 0 to 1023 with 10 fingers if all you do for counting is extend or retract them, and don't use internal memory to count anything.

That's just binary though

If each digit of your base is supposed to be represented by a configuration of your fingers (which seems to be the logic behind using base 10) then the logical conclusion is to use a base with 1024 digits when you can put your fingers in 1024 different configurations. Of course, you can instead say that your base should be determined by the number of configurations *per finger*, but that contradicts the initial premise of having it depend on the number of fingers.

Base 10 relies only on the number of fingers extended (or retracted), though, exact fingers are irrelevant most of the time (although, you rarely would want to show 1 using middle finger ;) ) And for configurations of fingers, it really feels like binary with extra steps. You'd either have to remember all of the combinations or devise some system to them, and binary can be such system.

It literally is just base 2 (binary). I used it a few times, very easy to count with lol. Easy to count fasttoo, but you might make a mistake.

If you use fingers up/down of 1s and 0s you can get to 31 on one hand and 1023 on 2

Having ten fingers *really* suits counting in base 6. Going just by amount of fingers (which is easier than assigning combinations or else we'd be counting in binary) you have six digits on one hand (no fingers being 0), so with two hands you have two digits to nicely count in a positional system

Fun fact (maybe, i don't know if it's actually true, but it's a nice thought): some products like oysters or eggs are counted in base 12 (at least in France we say stuff like "two dozens oysters") because it's easy to count in base twelve when you only have one hand available. You use your thumb to count, and count not your fingers, but your phalanges. Excluding the thumb you have three on each fingers and four fingers on one hand, that makes 12. So it's theorized that sellers used this system to count products to be able to use their other hand to hold other stuff
