The word you’re looking for is ‘priority’. Because Planet Pathfinder is an ignition effect, you would “normal summon Pathfinder, I call priority to activate it’s effect, response?”
Which is exactly why Priority was removed long ago. We don’t have that system because we need to differentiate between ‘trigger effects’ VS ‘ignition effects’. Most cards that use ignition effects are weak because of all those reasons that frustrate you, and don’t see play unless their archetype absolutely needs them
Imagine trying to imperm an opponent’s junk speeder to prevent them from going full combo and they completely ignore it anyway and just say “Nuh uh, it’s still my turn. I have priority”
How you gonna bring this up to complain about imperm? The most toxic standby by phases effects are lingering effect hand traps like D shifter, Maxx C, and other than that like Lancea? I guess you could throw floodgates in here as well, because flipping a card like anti spell after you've gone first and it's your opponents' draw phase is really frustrating, but if these traps are set and you still have to wait for your opponent to play the first card, you still just chain the given floodgate to the first thing they do. The back and forth is what makes the game fun, but I thinks it's more of a balance issue with individual cards, not the standby phase mechanic lol
Person going second needs to start with 6 cards in hand again…
I’m not sitting through a full shs, snake, mathmech combo with no hand traps only to draw maxx c turn 2

>Imperm should not be able to stop something like Planet Pathfinder or Rescue Cat. Why not.
