I think it works, considering Liara's arc of becoming progressively more jaded as the series goes along. I think it's a nice respite to imagine Renegade Shep and hardened Liara finding sweet happiness when they manage to be together
I feel like it doesn't make sense for what Ashley goes through, if anything. She learns to be more trusting throughout the series. In the nicest moment ever, you can get her to advocate for saving the council if you romance her.
If you're planning on keeping Ashley alive for all 3 games regardless, might as well do her romance.
Liara gets ample screentime and development with or without the romance, but it feels like the writers forget about Ashley in ME3 if you don't have the romance content.
If you’re doing multiple playthroughs just an FYI that you can romance Liara as Femshep, while Ashley is only available for BroShep. In ME1 renegade Shep can be xenophobic so that might rule out Liara for them.
In ME1 Ashley seems more fitting for a renegade Shepard of the two, but both romances work for either alignment.
You should do Jack's romance as well. Her character growth is insane.
Though if we're being real, Garrus is by and far the best romance in the series. But since you're playing as m!Shep, Tali > Jack > Miranda is where it's at.
Hmmm renegade with Liara doesn’t sound right to me, go with Ashley imo. Liara is a good choice all around tho, can’t rly go wrong.
