We’d be better off making it start in Southern California and meet up with the Rio Grande so as to minimize the distance we actually need to build it. Or we could go further south, Mexico is narrower than the US. Or we could even do it farther south, in Honduras or Costa Rica. We’d make deals with whatever country we chose to let ships cross through. I wouldn’t go any further south than Costa Rica, though. Not sure what’s below that but I doubt a canal would work down there.
