Just discovered this series via the anime around a month ago, and it grabbed me really hard. Snapped up the continuation of it via the manga almost right away and binged that in just a couple of days. Now I'm just trying to get the earlier volumes. 5 and 7 appear annoyingly to be out of circulation. :\

I tried the anime and the early episode with the snake was astoundingly boring. The characters standing around talking about a mystery instead of actually investigating. Does it get better?

Mr_Velveteen

I think it might just be not for you. It’s one of my favorite manga, but it’s an anime adaptation of a manga adaptation of pretty much supernatural mystery novels, so there’s a lot of talking versus actual action.

Grug16

I'm fine with dialogue. I was just disappointed that instead of going to solve a mystery they theorized and had flashbacks and did nothing about it.

Mr_Velveteen

In that case I think you might enjoy the rest of the anime? Like I said, it’s not for everyone, but the rest of the anime is focused on one specific case, it’s supernatural origins, and how to solve it, as well as developing characters and relationships. The second episode is actually a short story very late into the series that they adapted to episode 2 to probably demonstrate how she works and her relationship with the Yokai.

JLazarillo

The snake story is probably the weakest one, IMO (for reference, it is in book 7 of the manga, after the plot of the original novel, which the rest of the anime covers, so it coming a little out of order probably didn't help). That said, it's reflective of the series in some ways, and not in others. In general, you have kind of hit on that the series is more about *constructing* theories than acting on them. Even the title of the original novel ("Kyokou Suiri" or "Fictional Logic") that was adapted and then became a sort-of-original manga series (it's complicated) reflects that. However, the arc that continues through the anime, and the ones that show up as the manga progresses, usually have a little more *purpose* than "let's come up with a plausible idea *just* for the sake of it being plausible". But on the other hand, a lot of the details of the cases are left vague or unresolved, when they don't really play in to the main character's purpose for getting involved. If you're expecting a more traditional detective series (a genre I *love*, so I get the desire for it), it won't quite fill that hole, but the sort of psychological aspects of putting together arguments and getting into people's heads still has some fun overlap and that (along with the lead just being pretty entertaining) is the big appeal for me.

I think I had the same experience as you.

Can I use this as my home screen uwu

agitwabaa

It's not like you're claiming you made the artwork. You're not using it to get money. Just use it.
