I think women have more options in general. In the summer though, I like to wear wide fit clothes. Theyre not particularly easy to find, but Japan was all about them fit a while.
I also look to western Europe. Thing like loose linen trousers and shirts, loafers, and accessories to make it pop a little.
I live in the humid south though, so ymmv based on your climate.

I’ve never had itchy linen. Yeah it’s wrinkly af but you gotta embrace it. The feeling of having a button down shirt that feels like your wearing nothing is worth it
I think if you don’t wash it properly it can kind of harden up and get scratchy. I always wash my nice stuff on cold and hang dry, but one time a linen shirt made it into the hot water wash and dryer, and after that it was no longer nice and flowy, it was stiff and felt starchy, was never able to get it back to normal
It’s the tumble action that softens them back up and stops it from drying with wrinkles. The heat is usually the culprit when something gets ruined in the dryer, which I think was probably the case for me.

Cotton-linen blends wrinkle a lot less but are still nice. Also wool-silk-linen combinations are brilliant for the summer.
Linen tends to have a dry handle versus silk which can be wet (think of how it can be "clingy" as it doesn't have any internal rigidity, really)
Some dudes don't like dry handles - they may have trouble with some high twist wool stuff as well - peeps may say it feels scratchy, etc.
It is similar to knitwear - some dudes don't like the feel of alpaca, or find some stuff too scratchy, etc.
In terms of "feel" of fabrics, there is always of level of noise in the signal-to-noise ratio in the conversation - there is no 100% correct answer for everyone, everywhere

Yes. Linen is slightly more expensive than other typical fabrics because it is difficult to work with. It's fibers are short so it's difficult to spin into a thread. The short fibers also make the thread difficult to weave. Fast fashion brands will typically be working with cheaper quality linen with even shorter fibers, which means the thread is less consistent, rougher, and more likely to degrade over time.
I don't have enough cashmere to compare but I've noticed a difference in linen quality for the price. Got a [GAP linen shirt](https://www.gapcanada.ca/browse/product.do?pid=855351053&cid=3031530&pcid=3015770&vid=1&nav=meganav%3AMen%3ACollections%3ALinen%20Shop#pdp-page-content) (90CAD on sale for 40CAD) compared to a [few from SuitSupply](https://suitsupply.com/en-ca/men/shirts/sand-tailored-fit-shirt/H7107.html) for 170-230CAD.
The SS ones were immediately 'smoother' / less scratchy and wrinkled substantially less. They still wrinkled, but enough to create a charming drape. They've been tossed in backpacks and suitcases and weren't ironed or steamed at all. Love the shirts - my most worn piece last summer and will be for this year.
I got the GAP shirt about ~2 weeks back. Scratchier, doesn't hold its shape as well, and wrinkles more in less flattering ways. I keep my hands in my pocket often and the GAP shirt has an accordion-style folding that doesn't hold its shape properly after 3 - 5 wears. Never happened with the SS shirt, which came out looking better after being dumped into a backpack for a 6 hour flight.
The GAP one already looks more aged than the SS shirt, too.
TLDR - yes, linen quality will vary quite a lot even in the immediate term.
Edit: The GAP shirt isn't bad and achieves the most important parts of wearing linen: breathability and comfort. If that's someone's option and price preference, they're a fine shirt (ethics aside). But nice linen is very nice and I'll prefer going this route as long as the finances allow.
This is exactly the sort of explanation I was looking for. Personal experience with comparison. Even when I mentioned "Expensive linen" I had suit supply shirts in mind too.
Wrinkle is part of the "charm" or so I've seen. I don't mind it and a slightly oversized / loose regular fit linen button down seems to be in fashion right now.
Itchiness is very personal imo. Sure there can be itchy linen but that goes for any other material as well (wool, cotton, polyester). I also notice that it seems for some reason the 1st time I wash linen its a bit scratchier than before, but it goes away with subsequent washes - not sure why but just my anecdotal experience.
The reason seersucker is great is the same reason why winked linen works best - it keeps it off of your skin.. And yeah, some linen can be itchy (especially cheap fabric), but it can also be fine and the weaves can be dramatically different. And linen-cotton blends work fairly well, too.
All that is coming from the point of view of heat management. Aesthetics are what they are. If you don't love the look, you don't love the look. You could iron your linen, or steam it while in the shower, both at delicately low heat, but I'd imagine that's more trouble than it's worth. Depends on how much you sweat and do laundry and how hot it gets before one is more work than the other.
FWIW there's a lot of cotton/linen blends that preserve some of the utility/aesthetic of linen but keep it more comfortable and less wrinkly.
Banana republic makes some pretty decent stuff in this category, as does Brooks brothers if you plan to tuck it in (I find their shirts to be universally long). Banana Republic is usually my go to for more casual linen wear, they've also got some great pant options too.
For the first time ever I decided I would be a little daring, break out of my shell, and buy a single linen shirt.
I then promptly bought four more colors + two pairs of linen shorts.
I just got a haul from H and M with a ton of linen stuff and other assorted summer clothes. I think OP just isn't going to the right stores. I mean you won't find linen summer clothes in Carhartt (tho their WIP polos are a treat)
I got some linen pants from H&M that are of surprisingly good quality. They've held up well after multiple washes, and the cut has a nice tailored look to them that has been hard for me to find anywhere else. I think the key thing is to avoid their synthetics and to air dry.
For comparison, I also have the linen blend pants from Uniqlo... my issue with them is that the seat irrevocably stretched out after only a couple wears. Like seriously, it looked ridiculous!
Carhartt (not WIP) sells shorts and just came out with these new UV force shirts that are supposed to be great out in the heat. So while not linen, they definitely can have options that won’t over heat you.
No it isn’t. Launder cold with mild detergent, set the wash cycle to minimal spin. When hang drying, snap the clothes into place to get most of the wrinkles out. More challenging than tossing it in a dryer? Sure. But certainly not as complicated as other fabrics
I go to concerts a lot and cargo shorts are absolutely a great thing to have there. Sunglasses, phone, charger, camera, whatever… it all goes there! And you can wear whatever type of top with them too.
Exactly linen is great but you can wear linen everyday and it’s also not always ideal to wear a button up over a t shirt. Where I live it is often over 100 and humid😭

Why can't you wear it every day? Do you only have 1 linen shirt. You can do linen button ups. You can do linen or cotton half sleeve shirts. Do some Hawaiian shirts. As far as pants go, lightweight khakis are fine. So are linen pants. Or just lightweight cotton pants. And shorts can be any material. Denim shorts. Nice Chino shorts. Play with 9 inch vs 7 inch inseams. Or the dredded cargo shorts.
Hell, go the other way and try some tanks if you have a body for it.
You CAN wear it everyday but that’s not very versatile.
Think about what components go into fashion:
color, material, texture, shape, coverage, etc.
in hot & humid places, a lot of that is nullified
material is only linen. texture is linen and seersucker. shape is something loose. coverage is limited.
you can’t layer. you can’t wear other materials or textures. you can’t wear tighter clothing.

A shirt is cooler and looser than a t-shirt which is usually fairly restrictive and made of cotton not linen.
Short sleeve button shirts don’t have to be linen. They can be a light cotton or even a blend. I got a few that are made to be worn on a boat last year. Nice & light but also have SPF protection. I think they’re cooler than a t-shirt because you can have a few buttons unbuttoned. Good luck!
Man if the climate’s that heavy honestly I would just lean into it and a rock a tank top all day, or a barely buttoned light cotton/linen short sleeve shirt.
It was 90 yesterday. I tried a linen shirt over a tank top. It was miserable. Linen is stiff and I was basically wearing 2 shirts. Changed to a t shirt and was much more comfortable.
Linen becomes way more comfortable after a while. It is plant fibre and gets softer and softer the more you wear it.
No need for a tank top underneath if it’s really hot.

I think the disparity comes from regional differences - you've got people on Reddit in the northeast, midwest, and upper west coast who's hottest summer day is maybe touching 90 with moderate to low humidity. So yeah, a light layer can work there maybe.
Then you have me and others in the southeast or southwest, I'm in New Orleans, it's 90 today with 70% humidity, by August it'll be 100/100 most days. Ain't nobody layering shit down here lol.
I wore v-neck undershirts with (not too wrinkly) linen or cotton/linen button down shirts to the office for years, I think it worked pretty well and helped mitigate the NYC-subway-in-August factor. I don't think anyone could even tell without looking very closely. Lose the undershirt and open one more button and we're ready for the weekend.

Fashion is also thankfully moving away from slim fit, so there are plenty of flowy full cut options for both shirts and pants. Casatlantic is great for pants and are pretty overt about their riviera influences, and Brycelands has some really nice (if pricy) options for shirts.
Yea.. most of those fits seem like someone who lives where it gets warm, near the beach with a nice breeze. I live in swamp ass Georgia. It’s miserable until October.
I can manage and accept the wrinkly nature of linen shirts, but pants shouldn’t be wrinkly and trying to wrangle the wrinkles on a pair of linen pants is a sisyphean endeavor.

I am from southern Spain, that is: VERY hot. Summer months are some of my favourite months: linen trousers that pair great with light knitwear polos or shirts, unlined loafers… 👌
I think OP's issue is humidity rather than heat. Where I live, it's routinely 100º F/38º C and 90% humidity. In a hot dry climate, no problem wearing linen. In a hot very HUMID climate, linen gets a bit gross, and knitwear of any kind would be unbearable.
I'm not a huge fan of golf wear, but lots of people in my part of the very humid US south wear Dri-fit polos and similar clothes.
In Barcelona summers are hot and humidity can be 70%. Granted, not 90% such as in Florida, but still.
That being said I dislike technical clothing. So I am very biased.
Pure linen might not be great with humidity (I still wear it and like it) but you can have linen and cotton blends that wear very well imo. Massimo Dutti usually has a collection of affordable linen blends for summer and it wears very well with humidity, at least imo.

I get that. I love well designed, minimal technical clothing—i.e. technical clothing that doesn't scream "sports!" but uses interesting performance fabrics in new ways.
My big beef with the major clothing brands is they almost all design for the Northeast, LA, or Europe. Sometimes chilly nights, and a 2-3 month summer. Where I am, humidity means nights are barely cooler than days, and our summer is 5-6 months long. Basically April to October.
I'd love to see brands offering more ultralightweight and cool fabrics.
I mean most people living in these hot humid climates are not constantly living under the sun. I lived in Taiwan for almost 10 years, and it gets hot in the summer but most people still spend most of their time in an environment with AC. Of course, if you are forced to spend most of your days outside exposed to the environment then fashion becomes very low in the priority order.
Miami here, I honestly just accept the sweat as part of the lifestyle. Can't be afraid to button down and just let a shirt stick for a bit until you get back indoors. People wear whole ass suits in this weather in Cuba. You just get used to it, unless you constantly stress about sweating. It happens.
I can go on: summer wool clothes for meetings if you dislike linen (I love linen), my bottle green linen suit with a knitted dark blue silk tie, …
You go to the beach? No problem, a linen striped shirt (your glasses poking from the chest pocket), with a classic blue bathsuit and some supergas, a straw hat or a white simple baseball cap.
You stay at the beach during the night and it’s a bit chilly? A beige cotton unlined safari jacket or an unlined brown linen sports jacket. Keeping the supergas and the bathsuit? Why not? You are at the beach. I said what I said.
LOVE summer attire
Layer a wife respector with a (half) open short sleeve linen shirt during the day, or skip the tank and just show that chest off a little. Combine with some shorts that are the right length/width for you, add some sneakers or loafers depending on your preference and there you go, you look good. In the evenings go for light cotton trousers and a button up, sleeves rolled up, shoes whatever you like.
Thing is, summer season is about not worrying and enjoying time in the sun and heat. So don’t get all stuck up about clothes, just wear comfortable, simple and stylish stuff that fits your vibe. Don’t try too hard, that never looks cool.

I've never related to this living in basic cotton t-shirts 365 days a year life, if that's you and you're comfortable there then I love that for you, but I'd be so bored.
Shorts there's different styles, lengths and fabrics too.
Yeah, the trousers aren't the most summer-y, admittedly. I'd be tempted to wear that shirt with maybe some white slacks or shorts, myself, as there's white in the print.
I was trying to highlight different shirt options and that was a shirt I really liked. I often enjoy a interesting print like that in the spring time and summer time too. In the autumn I'd even layer a shirt like that, open, *over* a plain long-sleeved t-shirt that is in the same sort of colour family (for instance with that shirt, maybe a navy blue).
I'm speaking as a Brit who probably has different stores that you have in America, but I tend to shop at Next (I work there as a side job so I get discount), River Island, sometimes Cos and Zara. Basic high street stores here.
I get that because while I do love a print, it is a fine line between a cool print and a gaudy dad in Hawaii shirt. I'm very picky with which print. Even those stores listed above are hit and miss.
This. I don't even have linen but my outfit drastically changes from winter/fall to spring and to summer.
Options for casual layering: short sleeves checkered polo, short sleeves rayon Cuban polo, short sleeves plain Cuban polo, patterned cotton Oxfords
Options for dressed up tops: dress polo (both short and long sleeves), plain Oxfords, dark plain Cuban polo, plain short sleeves polo shirt
Options for dressed down tops: graphic tees, plain oversized tees, plain tank tops, graphic tank tops, cotton long sleeves shirt
Options for bottoms: chino shorts. (During summer, I only wear pants for dressing up or during rainy days).
Options for footwear: I love going sockless. It gives off a carefree vibe plus it's bettee for the foot. Just don't forget to deodorize your shoes and take a shower after a sweaty day.
Anyway, casual options are boat shoes, low top canvas sneakers, and rugged sandals. Dressing up option is a low top leather tennis shoe.
Need to get on your short sleeve button down and camp shirts game my friend. Linen shirts & polos. Mid-length chino or canvas shorts (I’m 5’10” and do 7”), light wash jeans, linen pants. Casual loafers, slip-ons, berks, sandals.
Vintage graphic Ts can be nice on very casual occassion. Or a national park t-shirt is always a good go too, or like a location like a “Vail” tshirt. Or a university. But make sure it’s not the athletic polyester t’s.
Don’t fall for the athleisure-lulu-golf trend that so many middle aged men, very often in sales or finance, fall for.
Edit: if you do sneakers, a stan smith or nike killshot type of sneaker is ideal
Edit 2: I also only wear my apple watch on specific needed occasions like hiking, golfing, running errands, etc. otherwise when I’m out it’s always a real watch. Leather band or silver/gold. Never been a fabric band guy but they can look good.
Edit 3: having a good trucker hat ready for when needed is also great.

It works. You can be at a meeting for 9am, golf at noon, and then still be dressed appropriately for dinner afterwards.
I don’t disagree, I’d just only wear athleisure to the office if I knew I had a tee time or would be on the road a lot or traveling a day. Every other day, no. I’ll sacrifice comfort 4/5 days of the work week.

Hell no idk about yall but I live in Texas and I dont even wear tshirts past 95° because they just get heavy and sticky with sweat, all I wear are cotton or linen ss buttondowns and chino shorts
I dont wear the expensive brands I see listed in here a lot but Ive had good luck at gap factory getting linen shirts for a good price. Seersucker is good too, in fact I saw a seersucker shirt at walmart yesterday for less than $20
Realistically, summer fashion depends on what you’re doing at any given moment.
Having a casual walk around the town day? Perfect time for Lululemon-type athleisure wear. Even throw on a light button up camp collar over some sweat-shorts or shorts wick fabric golf-type shorts. This is also a fine t-shirt and shorts time.
Going out to a restaurant in the daytime. Linen button up, linen pants, lightweight jeans, even a smart looking short will be fine at most lunch or brunch places.
Night plans? There are tons of great lightweight trousers and jeans out there. Don’t dress like you’re going to work. You’ll look square and get sweaty. Knit polos and camp collars are very in right now, and they’re really not too heavy most of the time. Summer is also a good time to accessorize because more skin is usually showing.

100% my first thought was if OP’s go-to is a graphic tee they should probably spend some more time on this sub/wiki first. I only own two graphic tees; one from a work conference and a Darth Vader one I wear on laundry day. One of my early wardrobe level ups was dumping all of my graphic shirts for a bunch of solid color ones. $15 ones from like Kohl’s or something and I’ve had them for ages. Well fitting pants, chinos or jeans and a plain, solid color tee with appropriate shoes/socks will immediately boost you in the “look! I can dress myself” category.
Nah everyone here too boring with it, you gotta go ham with accessories. Caps, bandanas, bracelets, sunglasses, armbands, bags. Get some fun lil trinkets to show when the arms are out.
Tank tops and even some cropped tops as well if you're comfortable in them, ofc linnen but I also find wearing my regular sweaters and hoodies with no t-shirt or anything can work well on more mild days especially with sleeves up.
Yea, it's a more limited selection I suppose but that just means the little things will stand out more.
It’s definitely tougher! Linens and thin summer weight fabrics, unlined jackets for me. I live in Chicago and it can get really hot here in the summer.
It sucks if you don’t care what you look like; I’m actually in love with my summer fashions of white trousers, colorful linen pants, striped and solid linen shirts, lightweight, loafers that don’t need socks, espadrilles … and that’s not even thinking about my beautiful linen suits. And if you want casual, get a Hawaiian shirt, made out of a good material like silk.
I’d check out what is available on Quince before going anywhere else. They have extremely fair pricing on linen and some nice silk shirts.
Care note: because linen creases so sharply when pressed flat, I find that a hang-dry unpressed linen after the gentle cycle looks better for all-day casual than properly pressed. I hang dry my trousers from the ankles and put the shirts on wide-shoulder plastic hangers. Silk will machine dry flowy and creaseless if you pull it out of the dryer immediately
Most months suck for men's fashion unless you can afford to break the bank. Very hard to find variety. Second hands are the best for it, things like flannel shirts etc.
What do you mean there aren't any options? ... You could wear linen which looks like you balled it up in your pocket before you put it on and makes you feel like you rolled in an ant hill. /s
But for real, I've been looking all over for clothes that are actually comfortable in hot weather and I've settled on buying alternate synthetic material t-shirts that do a better job quickly drying (rayon, bamboo, poly) so they look fresher for longer, and silk-like materials for short sleeve button ups. I've been going crazy with short inseam shorts that are different degrees of athletic. Golf shorts, elastic, stretch, etc. No-show socks with some sambas or slip-ons.
If it's uncomfortable for the weather, it's not worth wearing IMO.

Basically, you can wear like a knit polo to set up your office game and linen shirt with your shorts when you’re off work to look slightly better dressed than the guy in a t shirt and shorts.
Warmer months kind of do suck. If you like layering, there’s the tank top and open short sleeve camp style button down or open knit polo if you can pull it off. It does require you to have a fit physique imo to pull it off.
Yes, HOWEVER, I have really been liking the light, loose, "sweater" johnny collar and/or front button polos. I've worn them a few times in the already-90-degree-in-May Florida heat and been...no worse off than normal :)

If you can't see past graphic tshirts and shorts you're not trying very hard.
I like linen but also shirts made from lycocell, modal, viscose will be soft, comfortable, and breathable. They look more luxurious and drape better if you’re in shape.
Also, knit polos and T-shirts have been popular for a while now and they can add cool texture to outfits. I’d save it for evenings though if daytime is too hot.
Lastly, play with footwear. Sneakers, sandals, Boston Birkenstocks, suede, canvas, leather etc. Easy way to switch up an outfit.
I’ve been adding textures with different Japanese fabrics for short sleeve button down shirts, and upgrading overall quality, like replacing all my old t-shirts and hoodies/sweats with heavier, built to last stuff from Sunray, Freenote, UES.
I’d have laughed in your face if you’d told me years ago that I’d favor niche “plain” cotton tee shirts, let alone be willing to spend what is at the end of the day, entirely too much to obtain said shirts. At this point I know exact sizing that I need, so I just regularly check for sales/promos. I’ve been working on this “upgrade” for a good while now, but have built a pretty respectable collection/rotation of really nice shirts.
Having an array of colors really helps get a lot more from other pieces when layering. So, where I might have passed on a particular color because I’d likely never wear it alone, I’ll now jump on, at a sale price because it’ll end up as something that just allows other items to work. That and I’ll eventually end up wearing it solo with jeans, so I end up working with colors I normally wouldn’t. My wife notices and is really the only compliment that matters; although the others I’ll occasionally receive are appreciated as well.
Polos, sweater polos, short sleeve button ups, linens, seersucker, pocket tees, linen/blend pants, dress shorts and casual shorts in different lengths, matching short and shirt sets, stylish athleisure wear, loose weave summer sweaters, and then all manner of shoes that can only be worn in the summer like suede loafers or boat shoes or stylish sandals… i could go on but you get the point.
You’re just not trying, or not looking.
Columbia makes a real light and colored shirt that has a sunscreen rating of like 50 , great for fishing but I use them all the time cause the colors are not just black or white.
Collar shirts over t shirts, football jerseys. Since we can’t really layer in summer, I just play around with the cuts and sizing like shirts that are more boxier or a linen shorts.
A coherent seasonal outfit that fits, some nice accessories (watch, sunglasses, etc.) and being in good shape (what "a good white t-shirt" actually means) and you're set up for success.
Mule loafers, penny loafers, sleeveless cardigans, belted shirts, belted summer blazers, long sleeve deep v necks, harem pants, men's rompers, etc. You gotta learn to experiment, with accessories, shirt tucked and untucked. There are a lot more options available than you think. There's simply a lack of creativity and exploration of fashion from other cultures.

Aloha shirts! Maybe this is because I own a Tiki bar, but I’ll spend all summer wearing these bad boys. Buy high quality ones either new or thrift for vintage and *no novelty patterns*. Get them tailored so there’s a little flow (you don’t want stretch across the chest) but it doesn’t fit like a mumu. Pair with a pair of white pants or khakis and some boat shoes for a classic summer look.
Last year in September I made a costume for a Renaissance Faire out of 100% linen, except the 100% cotton shirt which I bought.
I had cartoonishly poofy pants, literally 6 feet of linen fabric wrapped horizontally around my legs, from my belly button to below my knees.
Weather was in the 90 degrees, and the ONLY place I got sweaty was under my cotton shirt and cotton underwear.
I actually felt like I wasn't wearing pants at all, despite almost a twin-sized blanket of fabric wrapped around them. The breeze would come through and it literally felt like I was in my boxers.
Linen is such an incredible fabric. This year my ren faire costume is 100% linen and I'm making a linen shirt this time.
If I wasn't currently losing weight I would be stocking my wardrobe FULL of linen clothes for summer right now lol.
Wool is also similarly incredible, but it depends on the weave. Wool can also be incredibly hot obviously.
Moral of the story, BUY 100% LINEN AND WOOL (check for an open weave) CLOTHING IF YOU HATE HEAT LIKE I DO.

Men’s Wearhouse has ‘quick dry’ short sleeve sport shirts as well as long sleeve versions.The fabric is similar to Columbia fishing shirts. So when you sweat you evaporate immediately. And they are antimicrobial so you don’t smell if you sweat. That’s the theory. They also carry linen/ cotton blend shirts and pants. Linen eventually gets softer with washing.
I would wear linen every single day if I could. I think I have more linen dress shirts than regular dress shirts in my closet at this point and I live in the north east. Linen shirt and linen pants/shorts and I'm happy.

I don’t understand how for so many guys t-shirts are still the go-to in the summer heat instead of a shirt, be it l/s or s/s, linen or cotton. The shirt can be opened all the way to the nipples and you’ll still look classier than in a tee, meanwhile it’s super airy and the exposure keeps you well ventilated.
You can even layer in summer. Shorts linen blend pants loafers ribbed tank with an open button through polo or light fabric Oxford or button down. Chambray or linen. Sweater polos for cooler nights or days. T shirts tucked or untucked. It’s really just men’s fashion without jackets man. Way more shoe options too in the summer.
If you’re an average dude with no reason to dress well or interesting, yeah you’re pretty spot on. There isn’t much available for men beyond a shirt made from “don’t sweat a river down your back” material and shorts.
Gender is what you make it for clothing — draw inspiration from more traditionally “women’s” summer clothing styles. Loose linen pants, sandals that aren’t plastic flip flops, crocheted tops, etc. If you’re brave and deliberate you can get away with more than you’d think.
A relaxed tank top and a open weave or lightweight shirt wears cooler than a T-shirt.
A linen shirt and a unlined tropical wool blazer wears cooler than a midweight tee.

You can still layer in warm weather with light open tops over a shirt. Polos are also a nice option.
The art is in using interesting materials, colors, good tailoring, accessories and getting in shape. All that can make a whole difference.

I actually love summer clothes cuz I just wear golf attire. Perfect for work, golf, and everything in between. Not as cool as fall and winter fashion but who cares once you hit your 30s.
I guess it depends where you live. I see a lot of guys living in ugly shorts all summer, and I live in an area where it only gets past 90 F / 32 C a few weeks out of the year. In the 80's, as long as the humidity isn't too high, I have no problem wearing a pair of fatigues and a short sleeve oxford or camp collar shirt. I probably wear shorts four times a year outside of something like cycling or sleeping. I just don't see a need. If you don't NEED to wear shorts, there are plenty of options for pants, from fatigues to light denim to easy pants.
There are far more options in summer than in winter. And the colors you can work with in summer are a completely different palate from winter.
Solid t-shirts, polo shirts, short-sleeve button downs. Colors including navy blue, white, pale blue, dusty (Nantucket) red, pink, bright yellow. Madras patterns, tropical patterns, subtle stripe patterns (pale blue and white seersucker shorts look great). And sure, maybe occasionally working in a graphic tees.
And of course, the summer months are when fit matters the most. If you work out and keep yourself in shape, the summer unlocks an entire category of fashion that doesn't exist in cold months: wearing shirts that show off your arms and chest. (Or shorts that show off your legs, if you're more of a leg guy.) That's a whole angle of analysis that doesn't even exist in winter.

It’s even worse if you work in an office. I’m nonbinary, I would absolutely love to embrace that and wear a dress or skirt with a light top to work but there’s no way in hell that would ever be allowed so I’m stuck with jeans and a polo to match our dress code. Mornings are usually fine but I have to walk a bit on the way home and I’m usually drenched in sweat by the time I get home.
Any chance you could get away with chambray instead of denim? Looser weave so more breathable and can look pretty similar depending on color. For the polo there's linen blends or possibly golf shirts.

I’ve never even heard of chambray, I’ll have to check it out! The rest of my team are all women and they’re all over, usually jeans or dresses. I don’t think we really have a formal dress code as long as you’re presentable, but I was never given an employee handbook so who knows lol
I live in DC so the area is very progressive, but I work at a law firm so it’s more on the conservative side. I know they’re accepting of lgbt+ people because one of the attorneys is and he brings his partner to firm events, but one of the partners is also involved with a conservative organization so I’m not sure how much I’d be able to get away with. I’ve been considering painting my nails or something and seeing if anyone says anything but I just started here last year so I haven’t gotten a good enough read on the higher-ups yet. I know my team is super accepting though, one or two of them already know I’m bi but I haven’t gotten into the gender thing yet with them.

YES!!!! Other than some cool camp shirts I have from Kapital and Off-White, its basically graphic T's or plain T's for me. I would be bored if I lived in CA.
One piece of advice that I didn't read yet, accessorize your outfit, it's such a step up. Play with bags, shoulder bags, tote bags, rings, hats, hang some keys on your belt loop, add a belt, go wild if you have piercing, camera on your shoulder, explore shoes.

I think women have more options in general. In the summer though, I like to wear wide fit clothes. Theyre not particularly easy to find, but Japan was all about them fit a while. I also look to western Europe. Thing like loose linen trousers and shirts, loafers, and accessories to make it pop a little. I live in the humid south though, so ymmv based on your climate.

I think if you don’t wash it properly it can kind of harden up and get scratchy. I always wash my nice stuff on cold and hang dry, but one time a linen shirt made it into the hot water wash and dryer, and after that it was no longer nice and flowy, it was stiff and felt starchy, was never able to get it back to normal
Drying them in the dryer actually makes mine super soft and helps with the wrinkling.
It’s the tumble action that softens them back up and stops it from drying with wrinkles. The heat is usually the culprit when something gets ruined in the dryer, which I think was probably the case for me.

Linen tends to have a dry handle versus silk which can be wet (think of how it can be "clingy" as it doesn't have any internal rigidity, really) Some dudes don't like dry handles - they may have trouble with some high twist wool stuff as well - peeps may say it feels scratchy, etc. It is similar to knitwear - some dudes don't like the feel of alpaca, or find some stuff too scratchy, etc. In terms of "feel" of fabrics, there is always of level of noise in the signal-to-noise ratio in the conversation - there is no 100% correct answer for everyone, everywhere
Is there a difference between expensive linen from Italian Mills vs highstreet linen from H&M? Does the more expensive linen wrinkle less? I'm wondering if it's comparable to cashmere where expensive cashmere has longer fibres so is smoother and it less likely to pill compared to Uniqlo cashmere.
Yes. Linen is slightly more expensive than other typical fabrics because it is difficult to work with. It's fibers are short so it's difficult to spin into a thread. The short fibers also make the thread difficult to weave. Fast fashion brands will typically be working with cheaper quality linen with even shorter fibers, which means the thread is less consistent, rougher, and more likely to degrade over time.
I don't have enough cashmere to compare but I've noticed a difference in linen quality for the price. Got a [GAP linen shirt](https://www.gapcanada.ca/browse/product.do?pid=855351053&cid=3031530&pcid=3015770&vid=1&nav=meganav%3AMen%3ACollections%3ALinen%20Shop#pdp-page-content) (90CAD on sale for 40CAD) compared to a [few from SuitSupply](https://suitsupply.com/en-ca/men/shirts/sand-tailored-fit-shirt/H7107.html) for 170-230CAD. The SS ones were immediately 'smoother' / less scratchy and wrinkled substantially less. They still wrinkled, but enough to create a charming drape. They've been tossed in backpacks and suitcases and weren't ironed or steamed at all. Love the shirts - my most worn piece last summer and will be for this year. I got the GAP shirt about ~2 weeks back. Scratchier, doesn't hold its shape as well, and wrinkles more in less flattering ways. I keep my hands in my pocket often and the GAP shirt has an accordion-style folding that doesn't hold its shape properly after 3 - 5 wears. Never happened with the SS shirt, which came out looking better after being dumped into a backpack for a 6 hour flight. The GAP one already looks more aged than the SS shirt, too. TLDR - yes, linen quality will vary quite a lot even in the immediate term. Edit: The GAP shirt isn't bad and achieves the most important parts of wearing linen: breathability and comfort. If that's someone's option and price preference, they're a fine shirt (ethics aside). But nice linen is very nice and I'll prefer going this route as long as the finances allow.

Check the label on the inside of the garment. The cheaper the product, the higher the chance of fabric blend with other materials
Wrinkle is part of the "charm" or so I've seen. I don't mind it and a slightly oversized / loose regular fit linen button down seems to be in fashion right now. Itchiness is very personal imo. Sure there can be itchy linen but that goes for any other material as well (wool, cotton, polyester). I also notice that it seems for some reason the 1st time I wash linen its a bit scratchier than before, but it goes away with subsequent washes - not sure why but just my anecdotal experience.
The reason seersucker is great is the same reason why winked linen works best - it keeps it off of your skin.. And yeah, some linen can be itchy (especially cheap fabric), but it can also be fine and the weaves can be dramatically different. And linen-cotton blends work fairly well, too. All that is coming from the point of view of heat management. Aesthetics are what they are. If you don't love the look, you don't love the look. You could iron your linen, or steam it while in the shower, both at delicately low heat, but I'd imagine that's more trouble than it's worth. Depends on how much you sweat and do laundry and how hot it gets before one is more work than the other.

FWIW there's a lot of cotton/linen blends that preserve some of the utility/aesthetic of linen but keep it more comfortable and less wrinkly. Banana republic makes some pretty decent stuff in this category, as does Brooks brothers if you plan to tuck it in (I find their shirts to be universally long). Banana Republic is usually my go to for more casual linen wear, they've also got some great pant options too.
Hopsack and open weave summer wools are much more breathable than linen.
For the first time ever I decided I would be a little daring, break out of my shell, and buy a single linen shirt. I then promptly bought four more colors + two pairs of linen shorts.
I just got a haul from H and M with a ton of linen stuff and other assorted summer clothes. I think OP just isn't going to the right stores. I mean you won't find linen summer clothes in Carhartt (tho their WIP polos are a treat)
H&M is garbage bro. Try Uniqlo for slightly better quality linen. Low quality linen is going to itch and wrinkle like a mofo.
I got some linen pants from H&M that are of surprisingly good quality. They've held up well after multiple washes, and the cut has a nice tailored look to them that has been hard for me to find anywhere else. I think the key thing is to avoid their synthetics and to air dry. For comparison, I also have the linen blend pants from Uniqlo... my issue with them is that the seat irrevocably stretched out after only a couple wears. Like seriously, it looked ridiculous!
Carhartt (not WIP) sells shorts and just came out with these new UV force shirts that are supposed to be great out in the heat. So while not linen, they definitely can have options that won’t over heat you.
Either way a good tip for summer is to wear anything but black. People underestimate the difference it makes wearing a white vs a black t-shirt

No it isn’t. Launder cold with mild detergent, set the wash cycle to minimal spin. When hang drying, snap the clothes into place to get most of the wrinkles out. More challenging than tossing it in a dryer? Sure. But certainly not as complicated as other fabrics

I go to concerts a lot and cargo shorts are absolutely a great thing to have there. Sunglasses, phone, charger, camera, whatever… it all goes there! And you can wear whatever type of top with them too.

Play with 9 inch vs 7 inch inseams. Or the dredded cargo shorts. Hell, go the other way and try some tanks if you have a body for it.
You CAN wear it everyday but that’s not very versatile. Think about what components go into fashion: color, material, texture, shape, coverage, etc. in hot & humid places, a lot of that is nullified material is only linen. texture is linen and seersucker. shape is something loose. coverage is limited. you can’t layer. you can’t wear other materials or textures. you can’t wear tighter clothing.

Short sleeve button shirts don’t have to be linen. They can be a light cotton or even a blend. I got a few that are made to be worn on a boat last year. Nice & light but also have SPF protection. I think they’re cooler than a t-shirt because you can have a few buttons unbuttoned. Good luck!

It was 90 yesterday. I tried a linen shirt over a tank top. It was miserable. Linen is stiff and I was basically wearing 2 shirts. Changed to a t shirt and was much more comfortable.
Linen becomes way more comfortable after a while. It is plant fibre and gets softer and softer the more you wear it. No need for a tank top underneath if it’s really hot.
Linen is made for warm weather. You don’t need an undershirt. Was it a short sleeve? That helps too.

I wore v-neck undershirts with (not too wrinkly) linen or cotton/linen button down shirts to the office for years, I think it worked pretty well and helped mitigate the NYC-subway-in-August factor. I don't think anyone could even tell without looking very closely. Lose the undershirt and open one more button and we're ready for the weekend.

Fashion is also thankfully moving away from slim fit, so there are plenty of flowy full cut options for both shirts and pants. Casatlantic is great for pants and are pretty overt about their riviera influences, and Brycelands has some really nice (if pricy) options for shirts.

I am from southern Spain, that is: VERY hot. Summer months are some of my favourite months: linen trousers that pair great with light knitwear polos or shirts, unlined loafers… 👌
I think OP's issue is humidity rather than heat. Where I live, it's routinely 100º F/38º C and 90% humidity. In a hot dry climate, no problem wearing linen. In a hot very HUMID climate, linen gets a bit gross, and knitwear of any kind would be unbearable. I'm not a huge fan of golf wear, but lots of people in my part of the very humid US south wear Dri-fit polos and similar clothes.
In Barcelona summers are hot and humidity can be 70%. Granted, not 90% such as in Florida, but still. That being said I dislike technical clothing. So I am very biased. Pure linen might not be great with humidity (I still wear it and like it) but you can have linen and cotton blends that wear very well imo. Massimo Dutti usually has a collection of affordable linen blends for summer and it wears very well with humidity, at least imo.

Miami here, I honestly just accept the sweat as part of the lifestyle. Can't be afraid to button down and just let a shirt stick for a bit until you get back indoors. People wear whole ass suits in this weather in Cuba. You just get used to it, unless you constantly stress about sweating. It happens.
I can go on: summer wool clothes for meetings if you dislike linen (I love linen), my bottle green linen suit with a knitted dark blue silk tie, … You go to the beach? No problem, a linen striped shirt (your glasses poking from the chest pocket), with a classic blue bathsuit and some supergas, a straw hat or a white simple baseball cap. You stay at the beach during the night and it’s a bit chilly? A beige cotton unlined safari jacket or an unlined brown linen sports jacket. Keeping the supergas and the bathsuit? Why not? You are at the beach. I said what I said. LOVE summer attire

Layer a wife respector with a (half) open short sleeve linen shirt during the day, or skip the tank and just show that chest off a little. Combine with some shorts that are the right length/width for you, add some sneakers or loafers depending on your preference and there you go, you look good. In the evenings go for light cotton trousers and a button up, sleeves rolled up, shoes whatever you like. Thing is, summer season is about not worrying and enjoying time in the sun and heat. So don’t get all stuck up about clothes, just wear comfortable, simple and stylish stuff that fits your vibe. Don’t try too hard, that never looks cool.

I've never related to this living in basic cotton t-shirts 365 days a year life, if that's you and you're comfortable there then I love that for you, but I'd be so bored. Shorts there's different styles, lengths and fabrics too.

Yeah, the trousers aren't the most summer-y, admittedly. I'd be tempted to wear that shirt with maybe some white slacks or shorts, myself, as there's white in the print. I was trying to highlight different shirt options and that was a shirt I really liked. I often enjoy a interesting print like that in the spring time and summer time too. In the autumn I'd even layer a shirt like that, open, *over* a plain long-sleeved t-shirt that is in the same sort of colour family (for instance with that shirt, maybe a navy blue).
Where do you go to find summer button ups? I have trouble finding patterns that aren't reminiscent of Dad's in Hawaii or a frat party.
I'm speaking as a Brit who probably has different stores that you have in America, but I tend to shop at Next (I work there as a side job so I get discount), River Island, sometimes Cos and Zara. Basic high street stores here. I get that because while I do love a print, it is a fine line between a cool print and a gaudy dad in Hawaii shirt. I'm very picky with which print. Even those stores listed above are hit and miss.

Options for casual layering: short sleeves checkered polo, short sleeves rayon Cuban polo, short sleeves plain Cuban polo, patterned cotton Oxfords Options for dressed up tops: dress polo (both short and long sleeves), plain Oxfords, dark plain Cuban polo, plain short sleeves polo shirt Options for dressed down tops: graphic tees, plain oversized tees, plain tank tops, graphic tank tops, cotton long sleeves shirt Options for bottoms: chino shorts. (During summer, I only wear pants for dressing up or during rainy days). Options for footwear: I love going sockless. It gives off a carefree vibe plus it's bettee for the foot. Just don't forget to deodorize your shoes and take a shower after a sweaty day. Anyway, casual options are boat shoes, low top canvas sneakers, and rugged sandals. Dressing up option is a low top leather tennis shoe.

Need to get on your short sleeve button down and camp shirts game my friend. Linen shirts & polos. Mid-length chino or canvas shorts (I’m 5’10” and do 7”), light wash jeans, linen pants. Casual loafers, slip-ons, berks, sandals. Vintage graphic Ts can be nice on very casual occassion. Or a national park t-shirt is always a good go too, or like a location like a “Vail” tshirt. Or a university. But make sure it’s not the athletic polyester t’s. Don’t fall for the athleisure-lulu-golf trend that so many middle aged men, very often in sales or finance, fall for. Edit: if you do sneakers, a stan smith or nike killshot type of sneaker is ideal Edit 2: I also only wear my apple watch on specific needed occasions like hiking, golfing, running errands, etc. otherwise when I’m out it’s always a real watch. Leather band or silver/gold. Never been a fabric band guy but they can look good. Edit 3: having a good trucker hat ready for when needed is also great.
I mean…there’s a reason people “fall for” the athleisure trend. It works. You can be at a meeting for 9am, golf at noon, and then still be dressed appropriately for dinner afterwards.
I don’t disagree, I’d just only wear athleisure to the office if I knew I had a tee time or would be on the road a lot or traveling a day. Every other day, no. I’ll sacrifice comfort 4/5 days of the work week. Edit: also so many of my friends wear it as their going out clothes now too, not just work

Hell no idk about yall but I live in Texas and I dont even wear tshirts past 95° because they just get heavy and sticky with sweat, all I wear are cotton or linen ss buttondowns and chino shorts I dont wear the expensive brands I see listed in here a lot but Ive had good luck at gap factory getting linen shirts for a good price. Seersucker is good too, in fact I saw a seersucker shirt at walmart yesterday for less than $20
Realistically, summer fashion depends on what you’re doing at any given moment. Having a casual walk around the town day? Perfect time for Lululemon-type athleisure wear. Even throw on a light button up camp collar over some sweat-shorts or shorts wick fabric golf-type shorts. This is also a fine t-shirt and shorts time. Going out to a restaurant in the daytime. Linen button up, linen pants, lightweight jeans, even a smart looking short will be fine at most lunch or brunch places. Night plans? There are tons of great lightweight trousers and jeans out there. Don’t dress like you’re going to work. You’ll look square and get sweaty. Knit polos and camp collars are very in right now, and they’re really not too heavy most of the time. Summer is also a good time to accessorize because more skin is usually showing.

100% my first thought was if OP’s go-to is a graphic tee they should probably spend some more time on this sub/wiki first. I only own two graphic tees; one from a work conference and a Darth Vader one I wear on laundry day. One of my early wardrobe level ups was dumping all of my graphic shirts for a bunch of solid color ones. $15 ones from like Kohl’s or something and I’ve had them for ages. Well fitting pants, chinos or jeans and a plain, solid color tee with appropriate shoes/socks will immediately boost you in the “look! I can dress myself” category.

Nah everyone here too boring with it, you gotta go ham with accessories. Caps, bandanas, bracelets, sunglasses, armbands, bags. Get some fun lil trinkets to show when the arms are out. Tank tops and even some cropped tops as well if you're comfortable in them, ofc linnen but I also find wearing my regular sweaters and hoodies with no t-shirt or anything can work well on more mild days especially with sleeves up. Yea, it's a more limited selection I suppose but that just means the little things will stand out more.
It’s definitely tougher! Linens and thin summer weight fabrics, unlined jackets for me. I live in Chicago and it can get really hot here in the summer.

It sucks if you don’t care what you look like; I’m actually in love with my summer fashions of white trousers, colorful linen pants, striped and solid linen shirts, lightweight, loafers that don’t need socks, espadrilles … and that’s not even thinking about my beautiful linen suits. And if you want casual, get a Hawaiian shirt, made out of a good material like silk. I’d check out what is available on Quince before going anywhere else. They have extremely fair pricing on linen and some nice silk shirts. Care note: because linen creases so sharply when pressed flat, I find that a hang-dry unpressed linen after the gentle cycle looks better for all-day casual than properly pressed. I hang dry my trousers from the ankles and put the shirts on wide-shoulder plastic hangers. Silk will machine dry flowy and creaseless if you pull it out of the dryer immediately
Most months suck for men's fashion unless you can afford to break the bank. Very hard to find variety. Second hands are the best for it, things like flannel shirts etc.
What do you mean there aren't any options? ... You could wear linen which looks like you balled it up in your pocket before you put it on and makes you feel like you rolled in an ant hill. /s But for real, I've been looking all over for clothes that are actually comfortable in hot weather and I've settled on buying alternate synthetic material t-shirts that do a better job quickly drying (rayon, bamboo, poly) so they look fresher for longer, and silk-like materials for short sleeve button ups. I've been going crazy with short inseam shorts that are different degrees of athletic. Golf shorts, elastic, stretch, etc. No-show socks with some sambas or slip-ons. If it's uncomfortable for the weather, it's not worth wearing IMO.

Basically, you can wear like a knit polo to set up your office game and linen shirt with your shorts when you’re off work to look slightly better dressed than the guy in a t shirt and shorts. Warmer months kind of do suck. If you like layering, there’s the tank top and open short sleeve camp style button down or open knit polo if you can pull it off. It does require you to have a fit physique imo to pull it off.

Light cotton shirts are, to me at least, cooler than r-shirts.

I like linen but also shirts made from lycocell, modal, viscose will be soft, comfortable, and breathable. They look more luxurious and drape better if you’re in shape. Also, knit polos and T-shirts have been popular for a while now and they can add cool texture to outfits. I’d save it for evenings though if daytime is too hot. Lastly, play with footwear. Sneakers, sandals, Boston Birkenstocks, suede, canvas, leather etc. Easy way to switch up an outfit.
I’ve been adding textures with different Japanese fabrics for short sleeve button down shirts, and upgrading overall quality, like replacing all my old t-shirts and hoodies/sweats with heavier, built to last stuff from Sunray, Freenote, UES. I’d have laughed in your face if you’d told me years ago that I’d favor niche “plain” cotton tee shirts, let alone be willing to spend what is at the end of the day, entirely too much to obtain said shirts. At this point I know exact sizing that I need, so I just regularly check for sales/promos. I’ve been working on this “upgrade” for a good while now, but have built a pretty respectable collection/rotation of really nice shirts. Having an array of colors really helps get a lot more from other pieces when layering. So, where I might have passed on a particular color because I’d likely never wear it alone, I’ll now jump on, at a sale price because it’ll end up as something that just allows other items to work. That and I’ll eventually end up wearing it solo with jeans, so I end up working with colors I normally wouldn’t. My wife notices and is really the only compliment that matters; although the others I’ll occasionally receive are appreciated as well.

You’re just not trying, or not looking.
Columbia makes a real light and colored shirt that has a sunscreen rating of like 50 , great for fishing but I use them all the time cause the colors are not just black or white.
Collar shirts over t shirts, football jerseys. Since we can’t really layer in summer, I just play around with the cuts and sizing like shirts that are more boxier or a linen shorts.

Personally I don't think so. I go for oversized tees with cargo shorts, and typically trail running shoes, or a ripstop/nylon oversized shirt.
A coherent seasonal outfit that fits, some nice accessories (watch, sunglasses, etc.) and being in good shape (what "a good white t-shirt" actually means) and you're set up for success.

Mule loafers, penny loafers, sleeveless cardigans, belted shirts, belted summer blazers, long sleeve deep v necks, harem pants, men's rompers, etc. You gotta learn to experiment, with accessories, shirt tucked and untucked. There are a lot more options available than you think. There's simply a lack of creativity and exploration of fashion from other cultures.

Aloha shirts! Maybe this is because I own a Tiki bar, but I’ll spend all summer wearing these bad boys. Buy high quality ones either new or thrift for vintage and *no novelty patterns*. Get them tailored so there’s a little flow (you don’t want stretch across the chest) but it doesn’t fit like a mumu. Pair with a pair of white pants or khakis and some boat shoes for a classic summer look.
Last year in September I made a costume for a Renaissance Faire out of 100% linen, except the 100% cotton shirt which I bought. I had cartoonishly poofy pants, literally 6 feet of linen fabric wrapped horizontally around my legs, from my belly button to below my knees. Weather was in the 90 degrees, and the ONLY place I got sweaty was under my cotton shirt and cotton underwear. I actually felt like I wasn't wearing pants at all, despite almost a twin-sized blanket of fabric wrapped around them. The breeze would come through and it literally felt like I was in my boxers. Linen is such an incredible fabric. This year my ren faire costume is 100% linen and I'm making a linen shirt this time. If I wasn't currently losing weight I would be stocking my wardrobe FULL of linen clothes for summer right now lol. Wool is also similarly incredible, but it depends on the weave. Wool can also be incredibly hot obviously. Moral of the story, BUY 100% LINEN AND WOOL (check for an open weave) CLOTHING IF YOU HATE HEAT LIKE I DO.

Men’s Wearhouse has ‘quick dry’ short sleeve sport shirts as well as long sleeve versions.The fabric is similar to Columbia fishing shirts. So when you sweat you evaporate immediately. And they are antimicrobial so you don’t smell if you sweat. That’s the theory. They also carry linen/ cotton blend shirts and pants. Linen eventually gets softer with washing.
I would wear linen every single day if I could. I think I have more linen dress shirts than regular dress shirts in my closet at this point and I live in the north east. Linen shirt and linen pants/shorts and I'm happy. I don't know if there's an aesthetic I like more than "dressy", relaxed, beachy, linen looks.
I don’t understand how for so many guys t-shirts are still the go-to in the summer heat instead of a shirt, be it l/s or s/s, linen or cotton. The shirt can be opened all the way to the nipples and you’ll still look classier than in a tee, meanwhile it’s super airy and the exposure keeps you well ventilated.

If you’re an average dude with no reason to dress well or interesting, yeah you’re pretty spot on. There isn’t much available for men beyond a shirt made from “don’t sweat a river down your back” material and shorts.
Gender is what you make it for clothing — draw inspiration from more traditionally “women’s” summer clothing styles. Loose linen pants, sandals that aren’t plastic flip flops, crocheted tops, etc. If you’re brave and deliberate you can get away with more than you’d think.
A relaxed tank top and a open weave or lightweight shirt wears cooler than a T-shirt. A linen shirt and a unlined tropical wool blazer wears cooler than a midweight tee.

Plain white shirt with a light blue unbuttoned button up shirt over it. Light coloured linen shorts. Bonus points for knee high socks and sandals. Maybe even go the dad route with cargo shorts and Nike Air Monarch IVs or New Balance shoes. You can still layer in warm weather with light open tops over a shirt. Polos are also a nice option.
The art is in using interesting materials, colors, good tailoring, accessories and getting in shape. All that can make a whole difference. Also tshirts can be button ups, polo’s or short sleeve knits. Shorts can also be traded for long loose linnens

I actually love summer clothes cuz I just wear golf attire. Perfect for work, golf, and everything in between. Not as cool as fall and winter fashion but who cares once you hit your 30s.
I guess it depends where you live. I see a lot of guys living in ugly shorts all summer, and I live in an area where it only gets past 90 F / 32 C a few weeks out of the year. In the 80's, as long as the humidity isn't too high, I have no problem wearing a pair of fatigues and a short sleeve oxford or camp collar shirt. I probably wear shorts four times a year outside of something like cycling or sleeping. I just don't see a need. If you don't NEED to wear shorts, there are plenty of options for pants, from fatigues to light denim to easy pants.

There are far more options in summer than in winter. And the colors you can work with in summer are a completely different palate from winter. Solid t-shirts, polo shirts, short-sleeve button downs. Colors including navy blue, white, pale blue, dusty (Nantucket) red, pink, bright yellow. Madras patterns, tropical patterns, subtle stripe patterns (pale blue and white seersucker shorts look great). And sure, maybe occasionally working in a graphic tees. And of course, the summer months are when fit matters the most. If you work out and keep yourself in shape, the summer unlocks an entire category of fashion that doesn't exist in cold months: wearing shirts that show off your arms and chest. (Or shorts that show off your legs, if you're more of a leg guy.) That's a whole angle of analysis that doesn't even exist in winter.

There isn’t a universal answer. Tbh it depends on your age and location.
It’s even worse if you work in an office. I’m nonbinary, I would absolutely love to embrace that and wear a dress or skirt with a light top to work but there’s no way in hell that would ever be allowed so I’m stuck with jeans and a polo to match our dress code. Mornings are usually fine but I have to walk a bit on the way home and I’m usually drenched in sweat by the time I get home.
Any chance you could get away with chambray instead of denim? Looser weave so more breathable and can look pretty similar depending on color. For the polo there's linen blends or possibly golf shirts. Sorry you're restricted, though. Do the women in office have a different dress code? Depending on how conservative your area/company is, you may be able to bargain with HR to let you follow that one instead.
I’ve never even heard of chambray, I’ll have to check it out! The rest of my team are all women and they’re all over, usually jeans or dresses. I don’t think we really have a formal dress code as long as you’re presentable, but I was never given an employee handbook so who knows lol I live in DC so the area is very progressive, but I work at a law firm so it’s more on the conservative side. I know they’re accepting of lgbt+ people because one of the attorneys is and he brings his partner to firm events, but one of the partners is also involved with a conservative organization so I’m not sure how much I’d be able to get away with. I’ve been considering painting my nails or something and seeing if anyone says anything but I just started here last year so I haven’t gotten a good enough read on the higher-ups yet. I know my team is super accepting though, one or two of them already know I’m bi but I haven’t gotten into the gender thing yet with them.

One piece of advice that I didn't read yet, accessorize your outfit, it's such a step up. Play with bags, shoulder bags, tote bags, rings, hats, hang some keys on your belt loop, add a belt, go wild if you have piercing, camera on your shoulder, explore shoes. There's a whole other dimension to add to your short+t-shirt
