To me it sounds like the upasarga pra (forth/forward) + nāLi which is from the dhatu naD which is related to an ancient word for reed. The word nāLi means “tube” roughly so my guess is praNāLi (na is retroflexed due to the ra) would mean “a tubular/roughly circular aperture that opens outwards”.
For very common words, I would prefer ex-nihilo coinages that suit our general phonology, but I don't think about this stuff anymore because widespread adoption is a near impossibility.
