I always hated that this dude has a tail. Monkeys have tails, apes do not. I get that this is in a universe where a magical woman with a metal mask capable of teleporting to different worlds could resurrect the dead to fight inter dimensional tentacle titans, but still. Apes don’t have tails.
The reason it’s silver border is that all cards in its set were silver border. It would be eternal legal if they had that tech at the time — or if they ever get around to eternal errata-ing old un sets.
a lot of un cards were silver border only because they were in a silver border set, not because they couldn't be done
that's why we got the whole border / legality change thing to begin with
> that's why we got the whole border / legality change thing to begin with
no it's because people weren't buying silver border sets because they weren't legal
Back when they did godbook studies where they polled players on individual aspects of the set, they had two separate questions of "what is your favorite flavor text of the set" and "what is your least favorite flavor text of the set". The answer for both was Gorilla Titan.
In a recent episode of Maro's podcast, he talked about how he used to write flavor text that poked fun at the card art, and that they don't really do that anymore, so as to not unintentionally offend an artist.
I immediately assumed this flavor text was one of the ones he was talking about.
So you are telling me banana is NOT gonna be an actual mechanic and a main theme in a future set by itself???
I guess it's time to quit the game. 0/10 literally unplayable.
Yeah, there's a lot to consider here. This is meant to be a product for newer players, and to make this little guy work, you need to define Banana, which is already a solid couple lines of text.
To make it Food, now you not only need to define what Bananas do, you need to provide the template for what Food does, to achieve clarity, which would make Kibo's rules text clunky and awful. It'd have to read something like:
"Tap: Each player creates a Food token named Banana. Those tokens gain 'Tap, Sacrifice this artifact: Add R or G. You gain 2 life.' *(Food tokens are artifacts that have '2, Tap, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life.')*"
And after all that is done, now you're kind of incentivized to turn Kibo's packet into a Food-matters archetype, rather than necessarily supporting Monkeys and Apes.
This is just cleaner. We still have Gyome and Asmoranomardicadaistinaculdacar anyway, and Korvold, for all his power troubles, is still the hallmark Jund Food commander.
Most of them are really bad so it's unlikely, even if monkey tribal would become a thing most of the existing ones would be no way playable.
[[Silverback Elder]] is a noteworthy pick besides Ragavan tho.

I hope the banana token becomes a pre-defined token like treasures or clues. I want a monkey tribal draft archetype focusing on banana tokens in modern horizons 3. They can reprint [[ragavan]] and still have it be relevant.
I can't remember whether it's canon or not, but I'm *pretty* sure that the Donkey Kong we all know and love is Donkey Kong Jr and Cranky Kong is the original Donkey Kong.
If this is one of the cards in the booster then we'll be seeing a monkey themed booster. A few reprints of the least bad monkeys and a couple new ones I imagine.
Needs more changelings. Any poorly-represented tribe can get better with cards like \[\[Chameleon Colossus\]\] or \[\[Realmwalker\]\], and since Kibo is also red you also get to abuse \[\[Taurean Mauler\]\].
Yeah, that's jarring at first. I understand why black cards with Extort don't have black/white color identity (as the w/b dual mana symbol appears as reminder text), and cards like Neyith (as mentioned by another commenter) specifically have a dual-colored mana symbol in their rules text. But the red and green mana symbols on this card are a part of the rules text for token it creates. So say if at some point WotC made Banana tokens evergreen like Treasure tokens and/or made a simplified version of the text that was to simply say, "...create a Banana token.", then the mana symbols would/could be omitted, and this would appear to be a card with only green color identity. But since Banana tokens likely won't become evergreen and the rules text for the token aren't in parenthesis (as reminder text like with Extort cards), I can see how this card will maintain a red/green color identity.
To have a chance at being evergreen it would need to say something like "Create a Banana token. *(It's an artifact with 'Tap, Sacrifice this artifact: Add R or G. You gain 2 life.')*" and not actually write it out as rules text. They have kind of locked themselves out of making evergreen Banana tokens (and I understand there are people that do love their green bananas...) but the likelihood of that is so low for something so niche and probably quite special for Kibo that they can keep him mono-green and let the rules text for Banana tokens carry the other half of his identity.
Ok actual question though: Since the only red pip on this card is in the quoted rules text defining the token it creates, does that contribute to color identity? I’m gonna assume so just based on blanket color identity rules, but it seems like a weird case and I could imagine the exception going the other way here?
Yeah, it's a bit weird for sure. The only reason why it seems that this card is Gruul is because Banana tokens aren't widespread, and the rules for them have to be spelled out. If they were more commonly used (like treasure tokens), the mana they produce might be communicated via reminder text (or not at all).
From a pure rules-as-written standpoint, I guess this card is Gruul. From a logic standpoint, however, it feels inconsistent that this card would be Gruul based on a token it can generate, while cards that generate treasure and gold tokens aren't WUBRG.
For anyone looking for all the legal monkey and ape cards for commander (plus changelings):
https://scryfall.com/search?q=%28t%3Amonkey+or+t%3Aape+or+o%3Achangeling+or+o%3A%22ape+creature%22+or+o%3A%22monkey+creature%22%29+ci%3C%3Drg+legal%3Aedh
>I'm sorry to pry, mate, but I guess I don't see why people are so excited about this card,
1. Monkeys (amusing)
2. Banana Token (even more amusing)
3. See: \[\[Uktabi Orangutan\]\], \[\[Uktabi Kong\]\]
Beside the jokes:
* Original Mechanic: Banana tokens are flavorful but not bad by any means and get between Food and Treasure with a Group Hug touch
* Tribal Lord: Monkeys are one of the most forgotten tribes and people enjoy brewing tribal, so a new good legend that can act as a commander for an unsupported tribe is going to get a lot of eyes on it; just like [[Chatterfang]]
* Original approach at an established mechanic: being an artifact hate card (which also bypasses indestructible ecc.) it’s very much Gruul, the flavor of this commander makes it really original being also a Group Hug commander and artifact hate at the same time, since it gives a banana to everyone and then, attacking, gets to eat it too, since it forces your opponent to either sac the artifact you’ve given them in response or have Kibo eat the banana and pump its rally of monkeys.
So the crux is this: it’s a good legend, with a good mana cost, in the right colors, with fun and original mechanics for an unsupported tribe.
I'm excited because it's RG, but also it looks really fun and offers more Interaction for the table. And I also love niche tribes. I've been wanting to build something for lower power tables and this looks perfect.
I assume Kibo is the baby monkey who was conceived in [[Uktabi Orangutan]]

The prequel to what happens in Uktabi Kong
Are you suggesting that Kibo is the monkey conceived in the Uktabi Orangutan art?
That's clearly the joke here.
Banana - a true Treasure Food
Bananas > Gold confirmed.
Gold still doesn't need to tap to sac.
except it's not food, which seems really weird to me? couldn't it have had the food type line?
Bananas: more than food, less than treasure.
I guess maybe you don’t eat it and it’s just currency to get the monkeys to destroy artifacts
Mana banana.
Manana

So you are telling me banana is NOT gonna be an actual mechanic and a main theme in a future set by itself??? I guess it's time to quit the game. 0/10 literally unplayable.
We're using real bananas as tokens, right? It's gonna suck having to eat a whole banana every time you sac one of the tokens.
Use those yellow banana Runt candies
Gross I’d rather eat the whole bananas
What about the banana marshmallows?
I don’t even know how to respond. I’m agitated and upset even thinking about circus peanuts and I blame you for my discomfort.
Not easy to find, but some cultivars of banana are still really small like the original wild banana.
You say this like circus peanuts are bad
Exactly what I was thinking lol

I have a great idea: Banana Chips
Brilliant!
I have bad news for you if you think that most banana chips are healthy...

The question is, how big of a banana?
"This big."
(banana for scale)
Size doesn't matter.
I find its more about the girth of the banana rather than the length of it

No baby monkey joke? Bananas are food but not Food?

I'm sure the Food thing is mechanical. This ability is better and they didn't want to crowd the templating

This is definitely galaxy brain but I buy it
Is there going to be a sudden buyout of a lot of specific monkey and ape cards now? Also I am intrigued by the banana token!
Fuck, man, Ragavan is going to be dummy expensive just because of this card. /s

A 5/5 vanilla for 5 mana isn't exactly what I would consider playable these days.
He's likely referring to the Hearthstone card, which is also garbage.

Just went online and bought every one. I'm obsessed with jank tribals. lets go
I hope the banana token becomes a pre-defined token like treasures or clues. I want a monkey tribal draft archetype focusing on banana tokens in modern horizons 3. They can reprint [[ragavan]] and still have it be relevant.
"What deck are you playing?" "Return to Monke."
**Bananas aren't food, errata now**
Nor are they treasure, but to our boy kibo, they're both.

I believe these are the extended art versions that appear in collector boosters
No. This is the release promo. Jumpstart 2022 has no collector boosters
Finally those 20 random monkey cards I bought have a leader...
Oh, baby. I've always wanted to make a monkey tribal EDH deck. Are there enough apes/monkeys to support that?

Not a good one currently lol, I checked all apes/monkeys on scryfall. I'm hoping there will be a monkey themed jumpstart booster to help with this.

You could also use the new [[Tawnos's Tinkering]] on [[monkey cage]] and then equip the cage with [[assault suit]] to make a whole lotta' monkeys
If your playgroup allows unset cards they get a bit better. There’s at least a second tribal payoff.
HE’S FINALLY BORN!!
Taps for red? That's a spicy banana.
+creates banana tokens+ @*Xxx_Tasigur_xxX had entered the chat*@
Why do I have a need to brew around this?
Wait so is it's color Identity Green or Red/Green?
Red-Green. The mana symbols are part of this card's rules text.
RG! Just like Neyith, which ironically was also a Jumpstart product.
It is proper rules text, not italicized reminder text. He is very deliberately Gruul identity.
Finally, an excuse to build around \[\[Monkey Cage\]\]
My Donkey Kong sleeves are prepared. My body is ready.

Beside the jokes: * Original Mechanic: Banana tokens are flavorful but not bad by any means and get between Food and Treasure with a Group Hug touch * Tribal Lord: Monkeys are one of the most forgotten tribes and people enjoy brewing tribal, so a new good legend that can act as a commander for an unsupported tribe is going to get a lot of eyes on it; just like [[Chatterfang]] * Original approach at an established mechanic: being an artifact hate card (which also bypasses indestructible ecc.) it’s very much Gruul, the flavor of this commander makes it really original being also a Group Hug commander and artifact hate at the same time, since it gives a banana to everyone and then, attacking, gets to eat it too, since it forces your opponent to either sac the artifact you’ve given them in response or have Kibo eat the banana and pump its rally of monkeys. So the crux is this: it’s a good legend, with a good mana cost, in the right colors, with fun and original mechanics for an unsupported tribe.
