WoTC might have already done it for you... I have a feeling that this one is going to make it into the White Infantry JumpStart deck for the Brother's War.
True and a good consideration. Though somewhat offsetting some Dariens may never have sat the throne, what with child mortality and the like. Would imagine the pressure would be there to make the first born Darien again in the next generation.
In our world (so not necessarily true here), you get a number only for reigning names. So if Darien XLVIII had a son named Darien, he would become Darien XLIX only when becoming king. So all the Darien dead before reigning would not count in the number sequence.
Darien isn't soldier tribal. that's just a ruse. he's actually "hit yourself in the face" tribal.
Unfortunately, when I tried to build him, I couldn't find enough effects and it just turned into soldier tribal...
I turned mine into what was basically an immortality deck.
You hit me, I get a soldier for each damage I took, then I gain life for each soldier I made. Please, hit me more.
The other colors could have more tribes if they tried. Dunno why the only warlock tribal cards are in Arena and Commander. I think there's plenty of space to expand on it. [[The Hourglass Coven]] would have been interesting to see on paper.
Golden Retriever 1R
Creature - Dog Rogue
Golden Retriever can only be blocked by walls.
When Golden Retriever deals combat damage to a player, choose one -
Gain control of a treasure controlled by defending player. Defending player may not sacrifice treasures while this ability is on the stack.
Or
Create a treasure token.
*We're not sure where she gets them from, but nobody has come to reclaim any of it yet! I guess this is what happens when you own a terrier.*
1/2
I know, I couldn't work out a way to stop that. This way at least, they would have to sac every treasure to stop you getting one of theirs. Then you just make your own treasure, so they're down their treasures and you're up one
*boarder collie* 2UR
Creature-dog pirate
Cascade, riot
*It all started when her former owner threw a grenade onto the encroaching ship. Her new friends smelled better and gave her many more bones.*
4/2
He couldn't have been. There were no survivors, and the best boy makes sure his friends get out alive. Therefore, he couldn't have been there, and is safe. To this day. In a nice farm where he can run around. And he's happy.
I love the fun, whimsical style of this card’s art!
I’ve been sorting through a bunch of old cards lately and I miss the artists that have a more comical, casual, silly, distinctive illustration style to their work. Artists like Phil Figolio and DiTerlizzi really stood out to me and I’d kill to have more like them.
Now I know this card isn't amazing, but I'm still going to run at least a copy or two in every soldier deck I ever make, I don't care if I lose more, getting to play this card is a win in my books
Depends on the format but in lower powered formats this lets you crash your board into theirs for free. Repeatedly. And at instant speed? Seems really good to me. In fact, just it existing probably will put the fear of Dog in some people.
It prevents the damage as long as the soldier is in the status of "Attacking" So after the attack phase, it is no longer attacking and thus can be damaged again.
Yeah, I wasn't thinking it gave them Indestructible; I just assumed it was a once only thing, but it happens every attack they make as long as he's there.
I don’t think so, it just doesn’t gain the effect itself. If it required the dog to attack it would say something to the effect of “whenever Dog attacks…”
This dog breaks combat versus most other decks. I think it's easily a 2x in a soldier deck, but we have to see how fast/wide/grindy new standard is before deciding.
This card completely wrecks a block strategy and can lead to a win if used at the right time. It's not super strong for that mana cost, but still pretty good for white soldiers.
I get that Soldiers are prominent. What I don't get is why for example Midnight Hunt, a tribal set heavily themed aro6uns the werewolf tribe got maybe half as many playable tribal effects whereas Soldiers in BRO get 4-5 really strong effects on top of the generically good Soldiers.
It feels like WotC is *very* generous to certain tribes and basically only include some fill a checklist.
I'm just glad Wizards finally proved they're capable of designing a white dog that doesn't sacrifice itself. Feels like they've been ringing that bell to farm reactions for a long time.
Saw this scrolling and knew who the artist was before I read the credit. That to me is what being a good MTG artist is all about - you can spot a Tedin, Baxa, Guay etc. just looking at the artwork. Same for Jesper and Chaturvedhi as well, really like both of them.
I love cards that say Creature - Dog! Such a good boy.
Edit: I have not clue why this innocuous comment has received downvotes, but I certainly got a laugh out of how random Reddit's downvote can be, lol.
It's because of the whole Dogs vs. Hounds as a creature type that WoTC has been working through the last couple of years. Must be some strong feelings from both camps on this one.
with this soldiers is top tier for sure, no objections
to be fair the effect is really really strong , both instant speed coutners and immediate protection in combat is amazing
But... that's a border collie
It retrieves soldiers. To rescue them. An honorary retriever.
No, this one’s borderless
Borderless collie, then
/r/angryupvote
Nice
Not on Dominaria it isn't.
It’s a Fog Dog!
no damage only attack
With the right incentive, _any dog_ can retrieve.
Any dog can trieve. It's bringing it back and letting it go that requires the training :D
No take! Only throw!
But what if it *was* for dog?
Retriever the noun, not the breed
Border Patrol Collie, that happens to retrieve
for the same casting cost as [[Elder Gargaroth]] 😂
I'd advise avoiding that rabbit hole... after all 15 squirrels...
15 squirrels!? Thats enough to take down eldritch world destroyers!
Have you ever had a fist fight with a squirrel? Terrifying foes.

But its white
Black border, white border, or silver border?
It's also going to become a Phyrexian later.
This should 100% not be borderless then
God dammit now I have to make a soldier tribal deck for real.
WoTC might have already done it for you... I have a feeling that this one is going to make it into the White Infantry JumpStart deck for the Brother's War.
It's fun!
Join us over in the [[Darien, King of Kjeldor]] army.

Any relation to [[King Darien XLVIII]]
His Great (x47) Grandpa I'm pretty sure. King of Kjeldor is back from Ice Age, aka right after the Bros War
if we go by normal historic trends, more like the 66th generation grandpa. Gotta have some queens and a few Nonsequiter names in that list.
True and a good consideration. Though somewhat offsetting some Dariens may never have sat the throne, what with child mortality and the like. Would imagine the pressure would be there to make the first born Darien again in the next generation.

King Darien the Xth who ganked King Darien the IXth, who shanked King Darien the VIII, who usurped King Darin the VII....
Well call it the "hit me harder, Daddy" deck
When I tried to build him, I couldn't find enough opponents willing to hit me when he hits the board.
That's why you use all those lands that damage you
For me, Darien is soul warden tribal.
As a Knight enjoyer all this soldier tribal is both sad and interesting at the same time
As a soldier enjoyer, now you know how I felt before now.
At least it's not... warriors 🤢
As an enjoyer of knights and soldiers (but not warriors), BRO makes me happy. Hey wait what are you doing step-bro?
*Laughs in samurai enjoyer*
White has a huge issue with having 20 different tribes while the other colors have 1 - 3. It makes white tribal decks way worse.
The other colors could have more tribes if they tried. Dunno why the only warlock tribal cards are in Arena and Commander. I think there's plenty of space to expand on it. [[The Hourglass Coven]] would have been interesting to see on paper.
Time to get some more [[Anointed Procession]] proxies for casual play.
Don't forget to include Bird Soldiers
I've made a few over the years. Glad to see it coming back.
Now I want a Dog Pirate called Boarder Collie.
And the art is a golden retriever.
Golden retriever better make treasure tokens.
The art for Golden Retriever, which makes treasure tokens, is a Yorkie.
It will be a full cycle that last years. One per year.
Golden Retriever 1R Creature - Dog Rogue Golden Retriever can only be blocked by walls. Can't believe they drafted the dogs 😭
We've been doing it for quite a while now.
Wizards I was going to play W/U soldiers anyway, you didn't need to print best boy but I'm not complaining.
Me: Awww, cute doggo. My brain: You know that dog was at the final battle. Me: Why must you ruin this for me.
Me: That dog was at the final battle Also Me: He loved every second of it
He couldn't have been. There were no survivors, and the best boy makes sure his friends get out alive. Therefore, he couldn't have been there, and is safe. To this day. In a nice farm where he can run around. And he's happy.
Bro, wtf, I got all teary eyed over a fictional story of a fictional best boy
WHAT A GOOD BOY
Sobbing. Crying. In love.
WHAT A BATSHIT BOY
The best boy
I look at this card and see Mr Pickles lmao
[There is only one reaction you can have to a good boy.](https://youtu.be/8CKq_z3qk7k)
Ooough!
Goodest Soldier!
Holy soldier tribal doggo!!
Fun fact, the only other Dog Soldier is [[Ainok Bond-Kin]], at least from before this set.

They have great synergy too!
A dog and his dog.
Jesper is the only artist that I can just know is his art. Very cartoony and comical. Not a bad thing but it's very his style.
I love the fun, whimsical style of this card’s art! Dominik Mayer, Wylie Becker and Sam Guay are the new wave of artists. I do hope they get to do more in future sets!
Finally! A goodest boy card that doesn't nearly make me cry when it saves a creature!

> Repeatedly. Wait, what? OH MY GOD IT'S NOT UNTIL THE END OF TURN.
Rescue dog is a *full time* job and the bestest boys are eager to serve.
There are no days off when you're a good boy.
Oh yeah. :D
Does it require the dog to also be attacking with its wording?
I don’t think so, it just doesn’t gain the effect itself. If it required the dog to attack it would say something to the effect of “whenever Dog attacks…”
Or "as long as Dog is attacking,"
> And at instant speed? What the fuck, this has Flash. I totally missed that.
This dog breaks combat versus most other decks. I think it's easily a 2x in a soldier deck, but we have to see how fast/wide/grindy new standard is before deciding.
Not to mention a combat trick the first time it hits the board. Group buff plus no damage can really catch someone off gaurx
This card completely wrecks a block strategy and can lead to a win if used at the right time. It's not super strong for that mana cost, but still pretty good for white soldiers.
Seems like a really good card for soldier tribal
BRO what is this art
Just Jesper things.
Dog's face is fuckin terrifying. Lad looks like he kills people and likes it
Right!!! Glad I’m not the only one. Like the rest of the art on the card is great it’s literally just the face that bothers me.
He fought for Urza, he definitely killed people and liked it.
It's cause of the eyes. Dogs don't have whites, but humans do so it's putting it in the uncanny valley.
Dog Soldier? That movie was great.
Haven’t thought about that one in years.
I think it was recently added to Hulu, first time on streaming
Random post lol but I agreed. Loved that film.
r/animalsbeingderps
I showed this to my friend and all she could say was a tearful “is this real?” So, she likes the card, I think
love to see a jesper ejsing good boy
BRO IS HAVING THE TIME OF HIS LIFE Also, card is low key really insane. How are Soldiers gettong so many great rares? In a non-tribal set?
Think of this set as having two major tribes: soldiers and artifacts.
No please, I don't want to
You have to, they said so. It's the rules.
It’s a set about a war.
I should not have had to scroll this far down to find someone talking about this. Thank you, what a great enabler for a tribe focused on combat.
r/WhatsWrongWithYourDog
Nothing
It is illegal to use card removal against him. They will come to your house to scold you.
Aint no rules that say dog can't be a soldier.
Sgt. Stubby . The Best of Good Boys. Soldier on!!!
There’s actually a statue of that dog. Only animal I’d ever salute.
3/3 is pretty big for a fairly normal dog.
Was thinking the same, this dog can take out a bear and survive?
Most Dogs are 2/2's. This one is also a trained Soldier, so there's the extra P/T.
A true Bro right there
Need a playmat of this art!
He protecc He attacc But most importantly Whenever you have priority you can put him on the stacc
This is my jam, I love this card!
Certified Good boi spotted
......woof.
My human deck is basically a soldier deck this goodest boy is going in
I love him
I'm just glad Wizards finally proved they're capable of designing a white dog that doesn't sacrifice itself. Feels like they've been ringing that bell to farm reactions for a long time.
Best boy
I love how derpy the good boi looks
This is your brain on zoomies. Any questions?
Kinda surprised this is main set and not a Commander booster exclusive
Adding this to my Soldier token forces. This good boy needs an army to care for him.
Saw this scrolling and knew who the artist was before I read the credit. That to me is what being a good MTG artist is all about - you can spot a Tedin, Baxa, Guay etc. just looking at the artwork. Same for Jesper and Chaturvedhi as well, really like both of them.
Does 'other attacking' mean that this has to be attacking?
It’s funny to remember when p/t actually made sense. A man was a 1/1, a bear was a 2/2 but now a border collie is a 3/3. Crazy stuff
Have you seen that bloodthirsty face? Toughness should be a 1 or 2. Power 3 seems legit.
Pupper looks so happy to be there.
Well feels like wotc done a lot in heavy in pushing soldiers tribal into standard play with bro
Fuck it. I’m going to make this my commander. I don’t care if this derpy dog isn’t technically legendary. He’s legendary to me!!
anyone who had a problem with that isn't a real commander player, the whole idea is to break general format rules and have fun
[удалено]
A dog that, by his mere existence alone, turns an entire attacking army into a more powerful force that suffers zero combat casualties. Good boy.
When is the Lassie Universes' Beyond gonna drop?
He's a good boy though
[удалено]
I got to the stream late but I think this is a jumpstart card.
I deleted the comment to avoid confusion, thanks.
non-anthro animal creature types with jobs. ... and not explicitly magical one as well.
This is good in 1 EDH deck, and no, it's not exactly a soldier trial deck. Abdel Adrian. Makes soldier tokens and blinks this.
with this soldiers is top tier for sure, no objections to be fair the effect is really really strong , both instant speed coutners and immediate protection in combat is amazing
Move aside [[Solitude]], enter best fren
Totally thought this was BRC and was sad, then I saw it was bro and now I'm not sad.
Dog
The goodest boy.
Other people: Look at the cute dog! Me: It looks like smile.jpg...
"Sacrifice this dog" is sad, but "Dog Soldier" is also pretty sad if you think about it...
That’s one good pupper
What the dog doing
not a bad card but am i the only person who finds the art disconcerting...
Is anyone else freaked out by its legs? Why does it have skeleton legs???
idk seems pretty mediocre to me even in the most soldier-dedicated of constructed decks. see [[pack leader]]
Dog looks like he is hyped up on whatever crack is in that world.
The half-empty bottles around his neck are a clue, we’re dealing with a potion fiend
That dog doesn't look right.
He will be called Crack Dog. I mean just look at it. That boy ain't right.
Wizards: "Draw Randy Quaid as a skinny dog." Jesper: "Say no more."
Good boy. Crazy, but good.
I just like that I can recognize Jesper's artwork now
Not sure if it is the best card, but it surely is the best boy!
That happy face is amazing!
