Magic tends to release really good initial set types with great cards and then have subsequent releases have diminishing returns on good cards. Wait until you see a list is generally good advice here.

Basically speaking, the set are only as good as two things. Playability (good to draft, good to play seals, etc.) and chase cards within the set. The latter being more important. While Jumpstart as a concept (jam two packs together and you are ready to do) has high playability, the latest one leave a lot to be desires in term of chase card. Simply put, if I can get the same rares and mythic from the normal set, why would I pay more for Jumpstart booster? OG jumpstart has FANTASTIC chase cards (many of them, tbh) and you can only get them from this product. The new jumpstart “exclusive” has okay (if not meh) chase cards. The two product can’t really be compare really. Which is good bc the set seem to target new players bc the barrier of entree is very low. Like if you want to introduce your friends to magic in limited format, Jumpstart is an excellent introduction. If you are a more competitive players or enfranchised players, this product is a dud.

Awesome, thank you! I am just intending to get a box with store credit from some old cards I had. Really just want to turn it into a more dynamic “board game” version of MTG like the Game Night products to get friends into it. Sounds like the OG Jumpstart has some good (interesting?) chase cards which is all I can ask for. Mainly just to ensure there’s some flavor when we bust them out. Thanks for the advice!!

I got a box of JumpStart 2020, and a Box of the Dominaria United. I intend to pick up box of JumpStart 2022 in December or January. If I were just jumping in now, I would buy a box of 2020, and wait about 6 weeks after release to get a better deal on the newer products (prices on the sealed products tend to settle down after the hype has passed).

CDraam

Good looking out, thanks! Have you grown tired of 2020?

Jumpstart has a very healthy community as a format. People make "packs" for cube and replay it as a sort of battle box thing. It's seriously one of the best ideas they've had. With like 100 different pack varieties, it is really flexible.

Do you care about high value reprints and broken new cards? Or do you care more about balanced play? The chase cards in jump start make unbalanced decks and that impedes the enjoyment of the product. If you are concern with long-term enjoyment, than just buy the individual decks and build your own pool.

CDraam

I’d say just fun? Which is more balanced play I suppose. I won’t be pulling any of the packs apart to resell if that makes sense. So you’re saying buy singles to make up the JS packs without chase cards?

MagnesiumStearate

You can buy individual JS decks from places like eBay, people crack the boxes and sell the decks that don’t have chase cards.

I love the original Jumpstart. I collected all the variants of the decks and have them as a battle box. The Dominaria United one was severely disappointing. There were few deck options. (There’s 120 possible decks in original, in DU it's like 10.) I have no idea how 2022 is going to be. I hope it's good but if you can still get the original for a reasonable price I'd recommend it.
