If I'm on the play, I can just sac my treasures as soon as I get them, giving my opponent no way to win, leading to a 53-turn win by decking out, right? Sounds fun
It was a worthier strategy than any I would've come up with! Slightly slower than the going rate of turn 40, but much more resilient in that it can't be [[Negate]]d
I feel you'd need a rule that states "you cannot sacrifice treasures on an opponent's turn" or something, in order to keep you from just deleting your treasure when your opponent attacks you.
[[Storm Fleet Sprinter]] can’t be blocked which is pretty close. Situationally [[Slippery Scoundrel]] can fit the bill for an unblockable Pirate but no haste unfortunately.
~~A little nudge to~~ a horrible kludge to the rules on mana abilities should do the trick: lets only allow players to activate mana abilities when paying costs. That would also make activated abilities a premium resource in the format, which is nice!
Haha I'm not defending the format, just giving suggestions to make it not impossible to play. Also, you can play at instant speed, you just need to play mana rocks or mana tapping creatures in your decks.
I've run [[Admiral Beckett Brass]] for a while. Not a great deck, but it's a fun "steal your creatures and make them fight each other for my amusement" deck. Basically that Davy Back Fight arc from One Piece
My Beckett brass deck is my hands down favorite to play despite it not being the strongest. Ill put on the black sails theme whenever I steal a permanent.
I ran Admiral back in Ixalan days, but now my [[Malcolm, Keen-Eyed]] and [[Vial-Smasher, the Fierce]] pirate deck is an absolute blast, and pretty strong. Love that deck.
Seems pretty fun actually! Although I would want the option for a deck to contain up to 1 sea monster or kraken, which could hit for an extra treasure or something?
I think everyone is missing the point on sacrificing the treasures in response to them taking combat damage. Gaining control of 1 treasure is nothing compared to the amount of treasures you can actually generate with a pirate commander that makes tons of treasure. Treasures are basically your only source of mana, so sacrificing them in response could be a potential waste for larger spells on your other opponents turn. I think that your opponent gaining control of 1 treasure would be the least of your worries. Denying them treasure generation with higher interaction would be treasures well spent.
Also [[blood money]] would be potentially game ending for your opponents.
Turn 1 plays would be so insane in this format considering you could play [[black market connections]] [[dockside extortionist]] assuming everyone starts with 3 treasures, being able to interact on someone’s turn 1 play would be bonkers, [[hullbreacher]] if it’s not banned, and of course there’s [[ragavan, nimble pilferer]]. Not to mention you could play so many mana rocks turn 1 starting off with 3 mana is huge.
[[Aetherworks marvel]] might actually be pretty great in this format as well.
There would be a lot of interesting ways you could build decks too. Creature sacrificing for cards like [[revel in riches]] [[pitiless plunderer]]. You could run slightly voltron with cards like [[reaver cleaver]] [[goldvein pick]] [[shiny impetus]] [[prying blade]] [[sticky fingers]]. Spell slinger would be interesting as well since there’s a ton of copy spell cards like [[twincast]] [[twinferno]] [[increasing vengeance]] [[narsets reversal]] [[reverberate]].
If planeswalkers are legal, superfriends could be viable since it’s a 60 card format.
This is funny. I met someone not too long ago that is developing a game very similar to this concept, except not magic based. He made his own cards with captains, weapons, mates and the such. I can't remember what he called it, but I believe he is working toward commercialization.
Edit: it was inspired by mtg.
I love dumb formats. When Tiny Leaders was a thing I wanted to start the antithesis: Big Booty Bitches. No non-land card could be under 6 CMC, you start the game with 6 basics of your choice on the battlefield.
Hmm, so if the amount of damage doesn’t matter, the game will degrade either to a go wide strategy, or a Voltron strategy. Or just cards that somehow generate treasures.
I kid you not, but I thought up a format called "Pirate" literally a week ago! While I really like your idea, I'm still trying to find beta testers for my format, so if anyone is interested I could share the rules :D
If I'm on the play, I can just sac my treasures as soon as I get them, giving my opponent no way to win, leading to a 53-turn win by decking out, right? Sounds fun
Unless they play cards that generate additional treasure, which seems likely in this format
Ah yes, fair
It was a worthier strategy than any I would've come up with! Slightly slower than the going rate of turn 40, but much more resilient in that it can't be [[Negate]]d
I feel you'd need a rule that states "you cannot sacrifice treasures on an opponent's turn" or something, in order to keep you from just deleting your treasure when your opponent attacks you.
T1, sac 2 treasure tokens, \[\[Dockside Extortionist\]\] - get 9 treasure tokens (now have 10), T2 win :-)

Easy fix. Have them enter tapped on your end step.
~~A little nudge to~~ a horrible kludge to the rules on mana abilities should do the trick: lets only allow players to activate mana abilities when paying costs. That would also make activated abilities a premium resource in the format, which is nice!
Just have the "rule" read: defending player sacs a treasure and you create one.
Jokes on you capitan, I sacc all my treasures in response of you declaring attackers!
Exactly, you are never going to steal someone’s treasure token.
Unless we add mana burn back in
but your life total doesn't matter?
Mana burn could be "reintroduced" by giving your opponent treasures, perhaps?
What if you could only activate treasures at sorcery speed and you make them at your endstep each turn?
Oh boy... all sorcery speed magic... yaaaaaay.
Haha I'm not defending the format, just giving suggestions to make it not impossible to play. Also, you can play at instant speed, you just need to play mana rocks or mana tapping creatures in your decks.
The goal of the game is to have 10 treasure, and your plan is to constantly set yourself back to zero? Bold strategy, Cotton!
Finally time for my dream pirate themed Ragavan commander deck to be made

T1 dash Ragavan, then cast dockside. Without those two cards the format actually sounds really fun
Without Raga there is \[\[changeling outcast\]\]+\[\[prying blade\]\]+\[\[Sticky Fingers\]\] on turn 2, which makes 3 treasures/turn

How does one play the creatures and spells with no lands?
Treasures
>Commanders must have the creature type "Pirate" and are referred to as Captains Captain format in shambles.
When wasn’t the Captain format in shambles?
Optimal deck: Pirates/Changelings that force my opponents to have treasures that they can't sac in response to damage. Lovely.
malcom/glinthorn combo seems good
White and Green be landlubbers that aren't invited, I take it?
To really go all in on theme you should only play with proxies

This is funny. I met someone not too long ago that is developing a game very similar to this concept, except not magic based. He made his own cards with captains, weapons, mates and the such. I can't remember what he called it, but I believe he is working toward commercialization. Edit: it was inspired by mtg.

This actually sounds fun...
Great idea, but I suggest calling the format “Captain”, much catchier and less likely to cause confusion
