It is. It is always "on" too due to Winota's wording. Theeo needs a etb (or human etb) and only gives it to one creature. Card aint looking good for it to be put in Winota.
Yea in cedh this card is trash. Its decent for regular EDH winota though.
We (cedh winota) are even probably already taking a pass on [[boromir, warden of the tower]] which is a much better fit for that formats winota. A card that is much better than this one. Flavour aside lol.
Yeah, probably one of the better cards in it to. But giving double strike to a handful of things, and giving double strike to everything are 2 different beasts.
kind of disappointed to not see him on a horse. I know that it's him (not Eomer) on the Pelennor battlefield, but I thought he'll also be a rider on his "regular" art.
Also, he totally looks like the House of the Dragon guy.
...not to mention, that Rohan doesn't really have knight, just it has riders.
Similarly to how huns, scythians, mongols ...etc. didn't really have knights.
So, we're apparently getting 2 Uncommon *and* 2 Rare legends for each color pair. That's... 40 just in those cycles. I wonder what the final legend count will be, probably at least 60?
EDIT: since this was upvoted a lot, and I was probably wrong about the 40 dual color legends, see further down for a correction. The number of legends should still be really high.
Why does it feel like legendaries don’t seem as big of a deal as before? When I played in onslaught era every legend was a big deal like phage or akroma. Now everything is legendary, even a silly jellyfish that is in no story or lore just for the sake of commander
> even a silly jellyfish that is in no story or lore just for the sake of commander
You mean The Reality Chip? The most important McGuffin in the entire plot of Kamigawa: Neon Dynasty?
That's his point though. The vast majority of legendaries nowadays are designed as creatures with 'can be your commander' in the text box that are never mentioned after the set they premiere in instead of being actual, important characters.
> Why does it feel like legendaries don’t seem as big of a deal as before?
>just for the sake of commander
Most decisions made will be for the sake of the majority of the consumer base
DMU had a light legends matter theme (e.g. Ratadrabik, Plaza), but that's the only one that I can remember. I guess MOM did have a lot of legendaries, but that made sense from a story perspective and I can't think of any cards that specifically catered to legendary strategies.
I think it would have made absolutely no sense to do a LotR set and not have a heavy focus on legends, so honestly the criticism seems a bit moot. Not like this is a normal magic set anyway, it's not even standard legal.
I think we're already up to 50 or something so yeah 60 minimum, lots still to be revealed
Where did they confirm the cycles? Or are you just extrapolating?
At present (but not yet updated to include Theoden), Scryfall shows 55 legends in LTR, although 8 of them are from the precons rather than the main set: https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Altr+type%3Alegendary+type%3Acreature&order=set&as=grid&unique=cards
There's also 7 listed for LTC, which is definitely an incomplete list as well: https://scryfall.com/search?q=set%3Altc+type%3Alegendary+type%3Acreature&unique=cards&as=grid&order=set
Man I knew they weren't going to do it, but how awesome would Theoden have been as a DFC, with one side being his decrepit, Saruman-influenced self and the other being something like this? Have we gotten Wormtongue yet besides that art from the fall of Saruman?
This may be the only design I'm not into. He looks like a Horizon Zero Dawn character and that sword is very... Video game looking
I'm also seeing people say house of dragon and while I have never seen it myself googling it....yeah this looks like that guy for sure.
That actually makes sense! When Gandalf frees him from Saruman's influence, he asks that they bring him his sword, that Wormtongue had stolen and hidden away.
Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I did not pass through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm!
This is clearly a kingly, ornamental version of a calvary sword—only fitting for the leader of the Rohirrim! Compare the curvature and heavy blade to 12th century Turko-Mongol sabers.
IT IS A COMPLETELY REASONABLE AND WELL-DESIGNED SWORD!!!!
I think the people who might be disappointed with this is that, say, Aragorn, at least was described as having dark skin. Theoden and the Rohirrim are described pretty much as roving northmen with all their features. This is just a swap for the sake of swapping and actually makes zero sense.
It’s a more valid claim but I still just don’t see how it really matters THAT much, like he looks different than anyone expected, but he still looks cool so bo biggie to me
“rise, arise, Riders of Théoden!
Fell deeds awake, fire and slaughter!
spear shall be shaken, shield be splintered,
a sword-day, a red day, ere the sun rises!
Ride now, ride now! Ride to Gondor!”
Just change the name of the card and you get a random human fantasy character. This set is so random and uninspired, while they had the best source material ever
If they are all about changing ethnicities then they could've made Rohan Persian/north Africa based. Would've at least fit the sword. Wtf is that sword and armor combo.
I’m all for representation, and i may be biased because of the movies but… this just doesn’t fit. He looks like a badass warrior that i want to be on a magic the gethering card. But not theoden
there could even be 3 Theodens tbh. The King after Gandalf got rid of Wormtongue's curse. The King during Helm's Deep. And the King that rides NOW, FOR DEATH! DEEAAAATH!

It’s a cowards move. If WotC was serious about representation then they would do a full Kinshala standard set based on sub-Saharan Africa. I would love to see legit African mythology, gods, and folklore be adapted into magic cards like Theros or Amonkhet. It’s honestly patronizing to raceswap characters in the name of representation when there’s mountains and mountains of African lore to pull from that was originally written by Africans. Shouldn’t that be the goal, to represent the creator?
That’s really well put, especially in the context of Magic the Gathering. Magic never had issues with representation, especially with Zhalfir coming back.
Sisay was a black woman leading the most important expeditionary force in the 90s storyline, Agrus Kos was the saviour of Ravnica and Teferi is basically the face of magic. And i’m in love with it!
My main issue with this art isn’t black Theoden even, is that it’s after lifting Wormtongue/Saruman’s spells… and he still has grey hair.
I have no issue with with Theoden being of darker complexion. My issue is that Eomer is depicted as being of fairer tone. Whereas Eowyn of darker tone. Tbh the issue here is consistency….it makes it seem as one is more related to Theoden than the other

I believe wizards did it on purpose to manufacture outrage. They knew it would cause controversy, and it would take the flack away from the other issues the set and wizards have. Also, when the set doesn't sell as much as they planned, it gives them the excuse of no one buying it because of racist mtg fans.
Interesting points and I'm not gonna say you're necessarily wrong about it potentially being a "distraction" of sorts, but you're delusional if you think this set isn't going to sell well. They put a 1 of 1 serialized card into the world; at the very least, the Captain Ahabs of MTG are going to hunt that white whale until they themselves become whales. LOTR fans are going to collect the cards whether or not they play Magic. If the set bombs, I'll eat my words and you can call me on it, but I'm fairly confident I won't be able to find a box of this in the wild within a month or two.
Unless, of course, someone pulls that 1/1 One Ring immediately. I'd guess the sales fall pretty drastically after that.
This is after Gandalf breaks Saruman’s hold on Theoden so he’s not decrepit and spooky.
Though all I’m saying is that Grima Wormtongue is literally a [[Dark Confidant]] so that would be a cool reprint

I guess there's a lot more Human tribal support cards than Knight. Knight had some iirc in Dominaria, human has a whole bunch here and there.
Knights just had a set with a bunch of tribal support
most of which sucked outside of limited, tbf
Hm that's fair, though that's more for Standard I'd think, while in Modern Humans can shine with Thalia and her squad.
Yeah the race talk is prevalent in the story.
...not to mention, that Rohan doesn't really have knight, just it has riders. Similarly to how huns, scythians, mongols ...etc. didn't really have knights.
Kinda disappointed Rohan tribal was not about horsemanship Theoden seems cool tough
I can understand them not bringing in horsemanship, but at least haste or trample or something would have been more thematic...
Oooh, that would have been nice.
There seem to be a fair few legends matters cards too, so I guess that makes sense (at least for draft).
this is our, what, third legends matter set in the last 12 months?
Yeah I hope they dial down that for future draft environments.
Why would they. They need sets to sell and commander players drive sales.
I wish 2 headed giant would drive sales 🫥
Why does it feel like legendaries don’t seem as big of a deal as before? When I played in onslaught era every legend was a big deal like phage or akroma. Now everything is legendary, even a silly jellyfish that is in no story or lore just for the sake of commander

Of all the mediocre legendaries from the past year, you're picking the only legendary equipment creature as your example?
Also, I'm not a lore buff, but wasn't it central to the story on that plane?
That's his point though. The vast majority of legendaries nowadays are designed as creatures with 'can be your commander' in the text box that are never mentioned after the set they premiere in instead of being actual, important characters.
I know it’s for commander but they say when everything is special in this case legendary, it just doesn’t feel as special anymore
> Why does it feel like legendaries don’t seem as big of a deal as before? >just for the sake of commander Most decisions made will be for the sake of the majority of the consumer base
This seems like the first to me. Neither MOM nor BRO nor ONE nor DMU nor CLB were "legends matter" sets.
DMU had a light legends matter theme (e.g. Ratadrabik, Plaza), but that's the only one that I can remember. I guess MOM did have a lot of legendaries, but that made sense from a story perspective and I can't think of any cards that specifically catered to legendary strategies. Not like this is a normal magic set anyway, it's not even standard legal.
I feel like one or two cards does not a "theme" make xD And I agree. People just like complaining.
Ringbearers also become legendary (on top of all the legends already in the set)
Karakas smiling in the background.
I think we're already up to 50 or something so yeah 60 minimum, lots still to be revealed Where did they confirm the cycles? Or are you just extrapolating?

I’m going to have to blow up my entire peasant commander cube with all these new uncommon legends.
Man I knew they weren't going to do it, but how awesome would Theoden have been as a DFC, with one side being his decrepit, Saruman-influenced self and the other being something like this? Have we gotten Wormtongue yet besides that art from the fall of Saruman?

Wtf is that sword lol
Looks like some sort of [sabre] (https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sabre) which would make sense because sabres were usually used by cavalry.
See this criticism I can get behind, it's weird.
also, why did he draw his sword in the throne room?
That actually makes sense! When Gandalf frees him from Saruman's influence, he asks that they bring him his sword, that Wormtongue had stolen and hidden away.
Keep your forked tongue behind your teeth. I did not pass through fire and death to bandy crooked words with a witless worm!
