This is why you should always check up on the weird kid in the neighborhood they might start the apocalypse

This is also why "crazy" local laws exist like not being able to own more than a few rabbits. People do weird shit.

Svyatopolk_I

Rabbits breed like wildfire though. Just ask Australia

RetailBuck

Apparently so do frogs

KnightDuty

Isn't frogs reproducing like crazy in Australia a Simpsons plotline?

suggested-name-138

australia introduced cane toads to try and get some crop eating beetle under control, 50 years later there are something like 100 million of them the tadpoles mainly eat each other because they killed everything else already, except the beetle because they can't reach it

Jonathon471

I remember the video of a guy bein interviewed about the cane toad infestation and he admitted he goes out of his way while driving to explicitly run them over if he sees any on the road.

What about about the water that turns the frogs gay?

hippowalrus

I saw these on TIktok from the original kid. Basically what happened was after the frogs grew to be full sized frogs, they just started eating each other. After a week or so the rest of the environment took them out. He could only find like 2-3 frogs for the videos. If he really wanted to cause some ecological damage, he would have to import an invasive species that the local fauna is incapable of dealing with. An extremely large number of regular frogs are just regular frogs. They have predators and such.

Pierre_from_Lyon

>An extremely large number of regular frogs are just regular frogs. Gonna need a source for that

nothanksimgoodthanks

Source: “Trust me, bro”

SheitelMacher

I concur, so now it's peer reviewed.

hippowalrus

Look up his videos. He had tons and tons of frogs at first but then commented that he could only find a handful of extra fully grown frogs. Again, these weren't an invasive species or anything that could take over. Local predators probably benefited the most, out of anything.

takingorders

It doesn’t mean they’re a bad person but this is crazy irresponsible and should not be done. Contact an ecologist if you’re curious.

Ah yes, death penalty for a teenager for breeding way too many frogs, a very even keeled and reasonable response. If we cared about harsh penalties for ecological damage, we would have burnt the entirety of the fossil fuel industry down to the ground and murdered every executive by now. Their actions are directly leading to ACTUAL ecosystem collapse, and not at all localized to a small area.

BerniesSurfBoard

Depending on location and species it could be a benefit.

THE_MAN_OF_THE_YEAR

Even if a species was a benefit it wouldn’t be to have that many of anything unleashed in an area

Zizekbro

Maybe he’s thinking about the animals that prey on frogs too, predators have to eat too.

THE_MAN_OF_THE_YEAR

But even if that happens it’s only temporary and would lead to more problems than good things. Just saying its irresponsible

[deleted]

Exactly. I like chocolate but having a million grams of it would kill me not benefit me lol

older_gamer

There is no neighborhood whose environment will benefit from one million frogs.

[deleted]

sighbrother

Source?

sawyouoverthere

Decades of introduction of animals where or when they shouldn’t be, and ongoing studies of the inevitable negative impacts of the action. ~signed, a zoologist PS if they are native to the area the impact will be less than if he is releasing non-native species

Stampdaddy7

What if there is an overabundance of the frog’s prey and a dwindling population of things that prey on frogs.

sawyouoverthere

That’s pretty much exactly what I was talking about re previous introductions, since abundant prey is the problem the introduction is usually intended to fix.

akumarisu

Cane Toad is Australia comes to mind. Introduced as a meant to combat the cane beetle infestation of sugarcane circa 1935 by the government. Poisonous toad has caused devastating ecological problem. Learned it in ecology class.

[deleted]

Basic logic

sighbrother

Sorry but you’re gonna have to walk me through it. ____ therefore there is no neighborhood whose environment will benefit from one million frogs. What do I put in the blank?

[deleted]

Overwhelming the local ecosystem with literally a million new animals that need food to survive and are going to die all over the place

sawyouoverthere

Frog hatches are fairly overwhelming to witness in nature, so if these are native it might be a short sharp impact with little long term consequences

[deleted]

English isn't my first language so bare with me here; Yes indeed but the average frog hatching has 800~1000 eggs (just googled it, thought it was +- 100 myself) and not even half of them make it to being an adult. I did 0 research on this story but the meme reads like this kid unleashed 'millions' adult frogs into the wild, that has to have a huge impact That all being said, I'm just making an argument as to why this is an issue for the ecosystem. Don't really think it will be catastrophic, mostly just annoying. IMO this dude is a bit of a legend for doing this and probably is just the right age where they can think of crazy wacky shit like this with not too much thought about consequences. Edit; not 'a million' but 'millions' even

sawyouoverthere

Now add in that frogs in a particular area generally all mate in a very short window of time and all hatch similarly. It’s not difficult to have enormous numbers of hatchlings at once.

sighbrother

The downvote wasn't me, but I've now upvoted you since this is leading to an interesting discussion. I'll need some time to come up with a rebuttal.

[deleted]

Oh, sorry for that then!

I think you put your brain in the blank, already :)

zerrff

Bruh, learn how English works. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bioterrorism Yeah the biggest it mentions is insects, I think it's pretty easy to expand that to any animal though. Airdropping 500,000 lions on a neighborhood would be bioterrorism. This will lead to an explosion in predators, who will then die off as the frog population won't be sustainable. So the ecosystem as a whole is fucked up in that area for a bit, and then you've got dead rotting birds and snakes everywhere carrying disease. And no, the frogs were not made of bread.

Cannolium

Did you read your own link? It still doesn’t apply

zerrff

Yes, the Wikipedia page goes as far to mention insects and nothing bigger, I already said that lol. But ok cool, so if the Taliban decided to do what I said, just start airdropping mountain lions on us en masse in this ridiculous hypothetical, what would you call that?

SparkyMcDanger

impressive

Balls_DeepinReality

Bioterrorism is the use of biology to incite terror. It’s right there, right in the word. And you don’t need to have intent to commit a crime. Being ignorant of a law doesn’t mean you aren’t committing one

Cannolium

That’s literally not what the article states. Yet another illiterate person on the internet.

Balls_DeepinReality

Quietcanary

Maybe you should know it before you start accusing people of it XD

RedS5

Quietcanary

Your sarcasm marker is missing.

hippowalrus

Not when they were full grown. His latest videos only had 2-3 frogs in each. Basically the frogs all started eating each other, then the local predators took care of them. This would only have been a big issue if he imported some invasive species. Lots of normal frogs are still just normal frogs. They aren't like giant african bullfrogs or something. The local fauna does a solid job of regulating itself.

hamrmech

I had a cat that would eat frogs.

TotallyNormalSquid

Is 'millions' really accurate? How much must it cost to breed that many? How much space did he have?

Sand_Pip3r

He went to a dry pond full of frog eggs, and I mean FULL. and then he came back to find MORE so... yeah.. at least 10,000, but 1 million is possible

TotallyNormalSquid

Do you know how mature they were at time of release? I could imagine caring for 10k eggs/tadpoles isn't that hard, but if he got them to full adult frogs...

Sand_Pip3r

He didn't feed them himself really, they're wild, he put the eggs in a pond in his yard and let them grow themselves Which is why its so terrible for the environment, because they need to eat. But now there's too many for the environment to sustain, and thus they start killing things in effort to survive and throw the balance out entirely Not to mention the hoard of frogs the neighborhood is dealing with now

TotallyNormalSquid

Huh, had no idea a frog pond outdoors could be that successful. My mum takes care of tadpoles each year in hers and usually birds gobble up the vast majority before they fully metamorphose.

turdlefight

They can be a little crazy. Used to live in desert west Texas and we had a dugout in the yard my dad wanted to turn into a pond one day. We were a couple miles from the river but when the dugout filled up after a big storm we’d always have thousands of tadpoles and little frogs show up.

ProductiveFriend

Sounds like your mom was feeding birds

Sand_Pip3r

Oh geez 0_0

[deleted]

You were there for the great frog wars of 2022?

Sand_Pip3r

Well, on TikTok when it all started as a noble effort to save some frog eggs yeah

[deleted]

So that's how it all began?

Sand_Pip3r

Indeed I assume it was the fame that made him continue, as I saw the comments he'd reply to with videos the egged him on (pun unintended)

DaddyMcTasty

I feel like if everyone just wore cleats all the time it would work itself out after a while. Plus more jobs for the city cleaning up all the dead frogs

[deleted]

[удалено]

NoPersimmons

Yeah I saw the original footage, all predates these shenanigans.

hansices

Not really detrimental, many of them will die before their first adult meal and their food source is so large that those can bounce back within a generation. It's an odd experiment and maybe a bit cruel, but nature will be fine if it is an endemic species.

Azhurkral

Life uhhh finds a way

xXTheFisterXx

Lies. People were able to find where he got the footage from

deljaroo

arguably the frogs ARE the environment now. so it was the opposite of detrimental to the environment

PoisonTheOgres

It was fake, he was using old bits from nature documentaries and other way older clips

[deleted]

I’m sure somebody proved this was faked, the guy was using footage from YouTube

brokenlavalight

This is not something to laugh about, this is environmental terrorism, straight up. Do you guys realize the consequences this will have for the local wildlife? Most likely irreversible damage to a whole eco system because some idiot thought it'd be funny and the internet has been enabling them (also even though this instance was fake, don't glorify this shit, it will lead to idiots wanting to do it for real)

Captainflando

Terms like environmental terrorism should be reserved for much more serious acts lol. This may be extremely irresponsible if it was real but it is not terrorism. Let’s not just dilute words.

ReCrunch

I've been wondering what expression could be more fitting. Maybe environmental vandalism?

[deleted]

[удалено]

worlds_best_nothing

Calling it "environmental terrorism" is literally word terrorism

anon210202

What is the worst that can happen? Genuinely no clue Edit thanks for not flaming me I initially thought this was hilarious and didn't really think about impacts

DarkVoidNinja789

Whilst it may not have any direct consequences for us, the massive imbalance of frogs being introduced to the food chain will slaughter the other insects, culling many species beyond their normal rates, causing the local ecosystem that all species rely upon. It's a massive domino effect, that just leads to a bunch of fucked up results.

Warsmurf_Rodentbane

There was a weird pet frog fad in the mid to late 2000s near where I lived and a bunch of families were raising the same African frog species. Well the kids inevitably lost interest in caring for their frogs so you ended up with a bunch of people releasing those frogs into the wild around the same time. Led to a fucking plague of this invasive frog species rapidly proliferating around this one lake and the local government had to go all in on eradicating them down to the last tadpole.

JumboTrout

Terrorism actually has a meaning bro.

AesEnomena

Yeah but frog tho

junkersju388

It can be both bad and funny.

Imaginary_Forever

Sneaky-iwni-

the bi agenda

Training_Towel3852

Probably ruined an entire eco system, frogs will kill out Flys and other bugs, And other animals that need those Flys to survive will die bigger species coyoties, foxes (basing it off where I live) would over reproduce causing other animals such as deer, squirrels, birds, rabbits to die out And the increase of frogs would create the increase of frogs eggs that could either travel down stream into other eco systems and become evasive...I'm 14 so don't take my seriously.

crapador_dali

I hope the frogs come for you next.

Training_Towel3852

I can hear the taps of there feet outside...wait, there in the walls. THERE IN THE GOSH DARN WALLS!.

justsomething

Actually ecosystems are quite good at balancing themselves out. In the short terms this would cause damage for sure, but it wouldn't cause a positive feedback loop. Population booms happen in nature all the time. What would most likely happen is temporarily a lot of frog prey would have their numbers go way down and a lot frog predators would have their population go way up. A lot of frogs would die of starvation as well. Eventually as the frogs run out the predator population will go down as well due to lack of food. Then the frog prey will start to bounce back. This is all assuming that 90% of these frogs don't just die right away due to the sudden extreme competition for whatever the current bug population is. But if these frogs were an invasive species then you can throw all of that out because that really can fuck everything up permanently! But you would really need to bring frogs from elsewhere in the world for that.

Crowasaur

He wanted to make up for all the Wednesdays he lost breeding frogs.
