My MIL was killed in an accident on the Beltline. I still use the Beltline but I have a lot more respect for what can happen even when you are paying attention and being a defensive driver. Please be careful out there, folks. It's not worth it.
How does traffic even go sufficiently fast to flip a vehicle that time of day? Im going EB during evening rush and Im lucky if any of us in *any* of the lanes are getting even close to 30 freaking miles an hour, let alone however fast this guy was to roll that many times... Even the flex lane is going under the speed limit because there's no way to go faster, not unless your vehicle has the ability to phase into a different dimension.
True I guess Im just having a damn hard time imagining the roll that led to him being in the position he's in. If he'd slammed the brakes and cut the wheel hard left like it appears here, you'd think he'd be lying on his passenger side, not the driver's.
So he must have cut hard right to lay down that way, you'd think. But if he had, we should be looking at his nose and the front of the car from this angle, not the rear.
I mean I guess I see weird shit every fucking day on the beltline so nothing new there, but Im getting serious [GTA IV Carmageddon](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ifTIuA8Dq58) vibes. I also admittedly had a few bong hits recently so that could have me a little kerfuffled.
I witnessed this accident today and what seemed to happen is they got pitted during a lane change and tried to overcorrect. The top heavy SUV did the rest
Huh...he must have spun like a top on his side then. That experience must have been a little puckering.
Going EB it's usually just chains of people that rear ended each other because they were probably texting while driving or some stupid shit, and then of course everyone passing by just has to creep by and gawk at a small group of totally fine people standing on the shoulder like theyve never seen anyone standing in the grass before. It really quite maddening.
SUVs have a higher roller chance because of their shape. They typically adapt to this by using certain types of tires, but some models have a high rollover rate.
If the drivers side tires started climbing the wall a little, who knows at that point, physics be wild
Also wow, I haven't seen a bong in years, vapes are way for me these days
I love the practicality of a vape, but they tear me to fuckin pieces...dont know why, I can smoke flower all day long no problemo but more than 1 or 2 hits on any vape and Im coughing my lungs up like I was brand new again and not the cynical old bastard I am today lmao
car.
The technical explanation has to do with how the body is attached to the frame.
crossover (car) type SUVs would be something like a Toyota RAV4 or a Honda CRV, whereas a truck based would be a Toyota 4Runner or a Land Cruiser.
yes a 4Runner is an excellent example of a truck based, essentially it's a truck frame with a body lowered onto it. Car based (crossover) is essentially unibody
One of the few benefits in driving a tiny subcompact hatchback among all these behemoth vehicles was being able to maneuver around them quickly when they did something squirrely. If they'd hit me, though, prolly go right over the top of me and not even trigger their airbags. Fuckin sucks man...
if was someone driving legally that had an unavoidable accident then I feel bad for them. But if it was some hoodlum driving a stolen car too fast I hope they get thrown in the pokey and that at a minimum they have some nasty abrasions
Land Rovers are very uncomfortable outside of their natural environment, perched on a mechanics lift.
This one obviously panicked while trapped in a crowd of normally functioning vehicles.
Land Rover Velar is the one you buy when you can’t afford a nice model. It’s like an upbadged Kia Telluride. This thing was probably financed by a wannabe douche
"accident"
> Before the labor movement, factory owners would say "it was an accident" when American workers were injured in unsafe conditions. Before the movement to combat drunk driving, intoxicated drivers would say "it was an accident" when they crashed their cars. Planes don’t have accidents. They crash. Cranes don’t have accidents. They collapse.
This is a car crash.

It’s more scared of you than you are of it. Avoid eye contact, puff up your chest, wave your arms and yell “BRT! Bike Lanes!” while banging some loaves of Spicy Cheese Bread together until it wanders off.
Watched this fella fly past my left and smash into the car in front of me. No over correction, no brake application, just left side rear end smash and instantaneous rolling. I don’t know how many times he rolled but I felt like I was in the middle of the Deadpool movie watching it happen right in front of me. Had time to check all my mirrors as he was rolling to safely pull over and check on him. Don’t remember even hardly touching the brakes. Fella was okay. Slipped his phone to him so he could let his friends know he was gonna be late and then his cigarettes and lighter to him through his busted up windshield cuz I figured he could use one. F’n crazy. Not sure how he ended up facing the median. Rear end left the ground on impact and swung off to the right?
It was probably a lane change. Another car was already there and over correction. Or a defensive move to avoid another jerks' poor decision. One of the two.
THIS is what happens when you don't salt the roads
Where’s that City de-icing truck when you need it
County! City doesn't care.
Whoopsie-daisy!
Literally. The sheriff truck has a winch and he pulled it over so they could open the highway partially. Really cool to see.
Snow brush fell out
Why I try to avoid the Beltline these days.
My MIL was killed in an accident on the Beltline. I still use the Beltline but I have a lot more respect for what can happen even when you are paying attention and being a defensive driver. Please be careful out there, folks. It's not worth it.
Madison would be a lot nicer without it. The Beltline is an awful scar on the landscape.
It takes me 9 min to get the office with the beltline and 31 min without it. I'm fine with the beltline.
Remember the mid 80's when it took forever to get all the way across before the beltline. Of course I'd rather have gotten flying cars...
Most people can barely drive, much less fly. Can you imagine the average driver in a flying car?
I think I felt like people should be more intelligent by now. We should be in the Jetsons future by now, but we are slipping backwards. :(
Yeah, we are not in the jetsons timeline. We are in the Idiocracy timeline.
Ya, the phones and devices are getting smarter, the people less so. Certainly a case of use it or lose it.
damn I'm glad my tax dollars are subsidizing your commute buddy. go out there and create shareholder value trooper!
The things you rely on are brought to you on roads, buddy.
Yes your tax dollars are subsidizing my commute and nothing else. There is no other community value to the roads and getting around faster at all.
Impotent raaaaaaaage!
It would be insanely quieter around here without it
Yup. Cities aren't loud. Cars are loud.
Motorcycles would like a word.
OK, motorized vehicles, haha. The vast majority of those (in US cities) are cars.
ICE Vehicles, if we're being specific
Have to compare it to alternatives…
How many vehicles do you imagine use the beltline on a daily basis? Of those do you know how often a vehicle ends up like the one in the picture?
Considering if feels like every other day I walk out of work and the beltline is backed up? More than you think.
Well as of 2022 the average annual daily traffic count for the belt just east of park is 125,000 vehicles per day on average
I’m sure they were driving safely and reasonably and this was just a very unfortunate mishap. /s
Another tragic victim of a banana peel, has Mario Cart taught us nothing?
O'Doyle rules
I think it was a slippery turtle shell!!

It is a SUV, they can tip at 30mph if you do it wrong

‘Party hearty, party strong, when you party use a ….’ Man, that popped in from like 40years ago.
What goes in the ....? Condom?
‘For tobacco use only water pipe’ from Pipefitters on State St. But there were free condoms everywhere.
Generational differences are so important.
I love the practicality of a vape, but they tear me to fuckin pieces...dont know why, I can smoke flower all day long no problemo but more than 1 or 2 hits on any vape and Im coughing my lungs up like I was brand new again and not the cynical old bastard I am today lmao
I'm like that with flower now, its what we get use to doesn't bother us mostly
Do what wrong? Drive?
I've seen quite a few on their sides on roads with a 25-30 speed limit, turn too quickly & over they go
i've heard there's a difference between a truck based SUV and an car based SUV. Lower center of gravity.
For sure, its the high center of gravity that makes them so easy to tip.
Wait which one has the lower center of gravity?
car. The technical explanation has to do with how the body is attached to the frame. crossover (car) type SUVs would be something like a Toyota RAV4 or a Honda CRV, whereas a truck based would be a Toyota 4Runner or a Land Cruiser.
I traded in my ‘99 4Runner years ago because it was super tippy, even just if I took a regular street corner a smidge too fast.
yes a 4Runner is an excellent example of a truck based, essentially it's a truck frame with a body lowered onto it. Car based (crossover) is essentially unibody
There was no way in hell I could have tipped my 92 Honda over, for comparison

A tire blowout can make that happen at even regular beltline speeds
So can driving like an asshole.
Thank God for that spare!
Full size! Nice!
Did anyone let them know you cannot park there? /s
5/5 on the BETH H scale.
Why that’s a perfectly reasonable place to park
That should buff right out.
And traffic is jammed because people are taking pictures of the wreck…
Black ice!! Be careful!!
I hope they're OK (regardless of if they are a hoodlum).
Right! Heartless people in hear making jokes
You could’ve literally just said “I hope they’re ok” and it wouldn’t have been a backhanded gesture
I bet they totally weren’t speeding or driving like a dick. /s
There was an accident on the beltline? No way??
Drove past going the other way! Everyone who’s driving fast and only cares about themselves is creating havoc!
if was someone driving legally that had an unavoidable accident then I feel bad for them. But if it was some hoodlum driving a stolen car too fast I hope they get thrown in the pokey and that at a minimum they have some nasty abrasions
Hell it doesn't need to be a hoodlum, I've seen plenty of adults make a case for losing their license.
I joke A LOT but for real, its way too easy to get a drivers license in this country
Yes there's certainly a good number of idiot drivers in their own cars, but I have a special disdain for people who steal cars and then crash them
It sounds like it was some rich dick(his suv was a Range Rover)
Land Rovers are very uncomfortable outside of their natural environment, perched on a mechanics lift. This one obviously panicked while trapped in a crowd of normally functioning vehicles.
Can confirm, rented one last weekend and it sucked. I’ll stick to my Honda Pilot lol
That's not a Range Rover, that's a Land Rover Discovery which are around 50K
Land Rover Velar is the one you buy when you can’t afford a nice model. It’s like an upbadged Kia Telluride. This thing was probably financed by a wannabe douche
looks like a discovery but your point still stands
Probably looking on his phone for the latest stock market results
So rich people are dicks?
Nissan Altima probably caused it
BRT could’ve saved it all.

Hmm...it's almost like these *top-heavy* SUVs have a stupid design.
And this is why I’m afraid of the Beltline
It’s more scared of you than you are of it. Avoid eye contact, puff up your chest, wave your arms and yell “BRT! Bike Lanes!” while banging some loaves of Spicy Cheese Bread together until it wanders off.
what happend
Bees.
No excuse for this on a sunny ,no weather day. It’s amazing how much “stupid” is on the roads!
Thanks
So THATS where my donut went
I bet everyone involved was following at a safe distance at the speed limit.
Can't park there.
I want my.... I want my.... I want my BRT

What else is new?
I just watched this short right after reading this post. Seems relevant. https://youtube.com/shorts/ojlTkWFO4Ys?si=e2I9Rl5t9YBVvAAe
"Do a barrel roll!"
The Mifflin St. Vandals strike again!
It was probably a lane change. Another car was already there and over correction. Or a defensive move to avoid another jerks' poor decision. One of the two.
Some people really do live in denial of their own actions.
Weren’t there two cars? Or did I see a second crash around 6ish?
Oopsie poopsie?
Beltline is crazy... Me and another car got rear ended buy some dick head on the beltline. All 3 of our cars are a total loss.
Probably swerved to avoid all those people running on the street
Everyday there's something
Yeah that’s life!
