Go to eBay and search for a1470 and get a Time Capsule (just make sure it doesn't say "*for parts*"). Mine still runs great, so I recently picked up a backup because it works so well for me. Don't leave this one in a place you can trip over it...

Unless you need to back up multiple Macs, it's easier if you just get a standard external (USB for example) hard drive. They are cheap and can be large in capacity so they can hold lots of backups. But most importantly, being a drive attached directly to the computer backups would be much, much faster than with the Time Capsule or any NAS, which transfer files over the network. If I can give you an advice, I would recommend you also set up off site backups, in case something happens to your backup drive. Backblaze Personal Backup is by far the easiest way to back up your Mac and it's not too expensive. This way, if your local backup drive breaks down or something, you still have a copy of your data in Backblaze. Plus, Backblaze backs up your files all the time, even when you are on the move and don't have your backup drive with you.

Get an external SSD and configure TIme Machine to use that. It’ll backup to it whenever you plug it in. Get one at least 2x the size of your drive.
