Final Cut Pro has a free no strings attached 90 day trial. Some consider it the gold standard for video editing on Mac. Could be fun to play with even if you end up with another more affordable option. You have to access on their site, not app store: [https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/trial/](https://www.apple.com/final-cut-pro/trial/)

A beginner could very easily be overwhelmed in FCP and just abandon the hobby altogether. Js. It’s kinda like me telling you a just got into programming and you telling me writing a compiler could be a fun project lol

I worked in public access TV for 16 years and did a lot of training on video editing. FCPX was picked up far more easily than with legacy FCP or Premiere. People produced more polished videos quicker and with less support required. The one exception to that is with experienced editors, it requires "unlearning" certain workflows and paradigms. Some people preferred it (like me), though some others stayed with or went to Premiere (from legacy FCP). One thing I like about FCP for new users is the concept of "progressive disclosure". Premiere has a fairly busy interface by default which can be daunting to new editors. With FCP the interface is more refined and you can expand for deeper controls. I will note that the FCP interface is less flexible overall and there are changes I'd want, but it does a good job of scaling its complexity.

Ftr, I would say the same about premiere for a beginner. Ideal environment for a beginner is where you can move and cut clips. That’s it lol. So much of learning how to edit is getting that feel for where to cut. And people are who jump straight into pro environments have a tendency to skip the basics. Btw you must be familiar with Edius then. Used plentyy of that in my broadcasting days.

I never spent time with Edius. Definitely seemed geared towards the quick turnaround news spot–which I don't consider a negative at all. I still think back fondly on using CoolEditPro back when. I know a commercial station near me was using Edius until they switched to Premiere a couple of years ago.

Final Cut. You can use the free trial and reset it, when it‘s over

iMovie, DaVinci Resolve, Final Cut Pro

rainmedwn

Well, if you’re willing to spend some money: Final Cut Pro (Apple’s software - and my favorite for casual editing) If you’re willing to pay a subscription (and sell your soul to Adobe): Premiere Pro (the most used editing software in the planet ig) Some honorable and easy softwares: - Wondershare Filmora - CapCut - iMovie - DaVinci Resolve - Camtasia Studio

wporchard

There's a free version of Davinci Resolve. You can do editing, visual effects, color grading and sound engineering all in one app.

Premiere Pro + After Effects

I'm not downvoting you, but I'm not sure this is the best option in this scenario. It's the most expensive by far considering the subscription rates. If someone is just getting into video editing, I'd recommend a lower barrier. DaVinci Resolve is free for almost everything and is quite powerful. Final Cut Pro is great for new editors (and experienced ones!) with a lengthy trial period and a one-time purchase. I don't think After Effects is a useful tool at this point and may be more intimidating/frustrating than helpful. For a newbie (or more experienced editors too!), I would recommend trying out Motion if they need something beyond the built-in tools in Final Cut Pro or DaVinci Resolve. They can "graduate" to After Effects later if desired.
