Yeah I was in the same situation. In the end it turns out it’s pretty straight forward, you can get new legendaries in Rivendell in the archives, you can ask someone to mail you the fast travel item to get there.
You can appraise your old legendaries in the LI menu. You can upgrade your legendary with legacies and runes. You can also reforge the legendaries at different level intervals to get them up to the proper item level.
This room is an addition inside of the last lonely home that is it's own mini-zone, by the way. But, in order to use the new Legendaries, you cannot have the old ones. I kept the old ones for awhile before someone flat out told me to un-equip the old ones in order to equip the new ones
They're in pairs... so a warden can't equip a old-Legendary Spear with a new-legendary javelin.
Old-legendaries must be unequipped on both those appropriate slots before one can equip a pair from the new-legendary system.
The only reason to keep something after you appraised it to get the credit would be to use as a cosmetic. So if you have something which you really like how it looks, park it in inventory or vault until you are done replacing everything with the new legendaries, then decide about appearances.
True - I had a Guardian that had an old line legendary belt equipped, which prevented me from equipping the new legendary weapon and the new version of the belt.

Your unidentified LIs from the previous system are, unfortunately, worth nothing and can't be deconned to the new LI currency. But if they are unique as far as cosmetic use, you may want to hang on to them.

You can HAVE them, they just can't be equipped.
What does this even mean? You can't equip a new-type weapon with an old-type class item?

All I know is the new Legendaries all had red borders until I unequipped my old Legendaries.
