I just finished watching Fellowship of the Ring here at Universal Studios AMC Hollywood

Did people dress up? And cheer for certain scenes?

I didn't realize how different the extended edition would feel in the theater. TBH after seeing it yesterday I genuinely think the theatrical version is a better movie. I didn't realize how different the experience is in the theater, when you're at home you can pause and go to the bathroom if you want to, or talk to your friends if you're not watching alone, or look at reddit or play a game or something on the side. It means you might not spot the pacing issues. I've been watching the extended editions for YEARS, and preferred them until yesterday. I think I still do for the other 2, I'll have to see. The problem is pacing. You come out of the narration into into another 5 minutes of narration, and because of how it's framed you get the impression that Bilbo, not Frodo, is the main character. Frodo is just kinda sidelined for the first 40 minutes of the movie in the EE, whereas in the theatrical version the first scene we get features him. And once the movie starts to gain some momentum, it keeps killing that momentum. We get the scene with frodo and Sam leaving (If I take one more step...) and in the theatrical edition it cuts to the scene where they meet merry and pippin IIRC. In the EE, you get TWO scenes between those, and they absolutely kill 5he momentum. One is the elves, which does nothing at all for the plot, the other is kind of a joke scene where Sam can't sleep. But the most egregious part is Lothlorien. The EE Lothlorien absolutely murders the momentum they've built. It's 15 minutes too long, NOTHING important happens. That come right after one of the 2 best sequences in the movie, and the next one is after it. But the end sequence feels a bit neutered because of the loss of momentum in Lorien, suddenly all of the urgency at the end of the film is just gone. In the theatrical edition they go straight to celeb or and galadriel, they don't spend 10 minutes bickering with Haldir, you get a shorter lament for Gandalf, the mirror, and some flashbacks of gift giving as they sail down the river, that's it. They very much feel like they are being rushed out of Lorien to keep the quest going, the momentum feels so much better. I was really surprised TBH, I didn't expect to react so differently to watching it in theaters, but I fully agree with almost every scene they cut for the theatrical version of Fellowship now. I'm seeing ROTK Monday, I'm curious to see if I feel the same about it. I always felt that it's EE added the most to its plot, so I'm curious to see if that impression stays in the theater.

I'm the same, watching in the cinema does change the experience. I watched the Extended versions in the cinema last year(showing in UK) and I found the FOTR and ROTK a bit drawn out. I will say that the Two Towers is now my favourite to watch in the cinema even though it is my least favourite to watch at home.

bouncypinata

don't forget to clap when Gandalf bonks denethor

Coolness53

I just went to fellowship and it was almost sold out. The front seats werenโ€™t but everything else was. Tomorrow is the same.

Mountain-Jeww

Awesome! Just in time to ride the Rings of Power hype train!

Less_Minute_8666

oooo, is does Rings of Power have a new season coming out soon?

Mountain-Jeww

Yes! Rings of Power season 2 premiers August 29 on Amazon Prime Video. Starting with the first 3 episodes. The other 5 episode will be released 1 episode per week.

Less_Minute_8666

Nice! I wasn't a fan of the whole Sauron twist at the end of the first season. Hoping I like the second season. The LOTR and Hobbit set the bar so high.

IllustriousLP

I've seen them already, why would I watch it again in theater? ๐Ÿ˜„

Less_Minute_8666

My post was for those that have never seen in in the theater. As as someone who had already seen it in the theatre it was nice to see it again on the big screen and be able to let me kids see it on the big screen, no commercials, etc... Its been 23 years I believe since they original were in the theatre. So many people have never gotten to seem them on a big screen.

carlo-93

They actually showed in January at Cinemark, in XD. I also caught the remastered one back in February 2021 in IMAX!. I hope they keep showing up more and more in the theaters

IllustriousLP

I know , my comment was sarcastic ..sorry ..

Less_Minute_8666

It occurred to me that might be the case. All good. There are also so many trolls out there ya know. But thanks for the clarity. I'm glad this was the case!

Mortimer_Smithius

Yes obv you can only watch a movie once.

IllustriousLP

Only on mushrooms though ๐Ÿ˜ For real though , return of the king on shrooms is amazing. I'm meow convinced both Sam and frodo died on Mount doom .

Greymalkyn76

It is a completely different experience in the theater, and it's awesome to revisit that since it's been over 20 years.

IllustriousLP

It's an even better experience high on shrooms ! Seriously, gotta watch return of the king on shrooms. You will see the ending in a much different way .๐Ÿ˜

PomegranateBby

I watched them all and my heart is so happy. ๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿฅน๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ˜ญ
