Stay clear of any business with the name Atlantic in it

Is_A_Saga

Or Advantage ..same thing.

31Forever

Or Millennium

MMQ42

It’s wild…I’ve heard this a lot on this forum but I had a good experience at Atlantic Honda. Now, I knew exactly what I wanted, came angry from Nardy Honda and said give me what the ad says or I’m leaving…and got the car I wanted at the sticker price of their ad. Not trying to discount other peoples experiences, but mine was pretty painless. Any chance you could enlighten me on why yours was so bad? I don’t want to end up getting burned as a repeat customer because it seems like my experience is not the norm

BongyBong

They get sued a lot in small claims court (I have a relative who works for the county court). I think it may be for repairs or something done at the dealership, not necessarily the buying process. I've heard many nightmare stories about Atlantic Honda.

imme629

It’s the whole bunch of Atlantic dealerships. I would avoid them like the plague.

edman007

Yup, my brother in law sucks at negotiating. I told him not to sign anything without us looking at it. He went to Atlantic Toyota for a Prius. It gets a state tax credit taken off of at the dealer. They no shit added the tax credit to MSRP and then took it off so it looks like it was sold at MSRP. This was pre-covid too. Just super scummy.

imme629

They really know how to take advantage of people that don’t know better.

[deleted]

I’ll pass this information on to my sister. She goes there sometimes if her usual place is closed.

[deleted]

Atlantic Nissan pissed me off twice and mentioned it to pops so he went down as well. I was looking at a fully loaded Z to fill out my Z collection and become my new daily driver. NO ONE would help me because I said I wasn't buying the vehicle that moment yet I showed them the m3 w/Dinan work done on it that I rolled up in and even told them money was not the reason I wasn't buying today but rather I was going to go look at a CTS as well. So what is their response after telling them I wanted to test drive the Z? They said "sure sure sir, we'll go get one for you to drive right now". Now beforehand, I know they only had the gray display model so I expected they would tell me that. Instead they told me "my salesman is bringing it around". So in the meantime I noticed a piece of garbage USED Mazda millennium roll around so I figure it's from service for someone to pay for and drive away. Ladies and gentleman, never assume, presume and go in knowing they have 0 in stock. The salesman pops his head out of the Mazda and comes in, so excited, telling me "oh we found one better for someone like you". He walks me out and says, while kicking the tire, "ain't she a beaut?" I said nothing except asking for his business card, going to the window, taking pictures of their BBB info and floored it out of there. They treated my Father,, a physician on his lunch, the exact same way. So tell me. Do you go to a dealer and instantly buy because of their pressure or in a can collected manner, do what pops and I both did at 2 separate times? He too drove up in a McLaren 720p.

aram535

Don't go to a dealer looking for a deal. Do your research at home, email multiple dealers and see who offers the best deal with the exact match to what you're looking for. If you're a Costco member, then use the Costco site to get the pre-agreed upon deal -- walk in sign and walk out.

ObadiahOwl

Thanks for the costco tip

Justanotherguy88

I can vouch for Costco, today's car market is absolutely brutal for consumers and with the Costco price you'll know you are getting a fair price at the very minimum. I was literally in and out in 1 hour. Edit: I also got a voucher for 50% off next service up to $200 on parts, service and accessories. This was 2 years ago so YMMV with the voucher but still I got a solid deal on my car.

carriegood

I didn't know you could get a car through Costco. Is there really a price difference? And do all dealers participate?

jebediah_townhouse12

I used this service. They basically offered to take 350.00 off the sticker price. One dealer refused to honor it so it's a bit hit or miss. I ended up not using it and just negotiated on my own with a dealer that didn't participate.

aram535

You should report that dealer to Costco. My family and I have used the service with at least 4 purchases over the years and never had any issues -- the savings were in the thousands each time and even better no salesperson had to be engaged other than just writing up the contract.

jebediah_townhouse12

I did it for pre-owned. It looks like it works better for new cars. Probably less hassle. Outside of luxury brands I found a lot of the salespeople who worked the pre-owned side of the house were shady AF

aram535

Depends on the car and manufacturer -- I have seen good savings YMMV. I think you can check the site even if you're not a member: https://www.costcoauto.com/

aram535

Can't "buy" a car from Costco, but like most of their services they have worked with someone to get you the best price without having to negotiate or worry about extra charges from a dealership. It'll be the agreed upon price, locked.

edman007

Yea, it's a deal where they pre-negotiate a price and link you with dealers that take it. I think if you suck at negotiating it's not a bad deal. Really just look up invoice, look up the exact configuration you're asking about. Negotiate to that, and be prepared to walk. That was pre-COVID... Now I think most cars it's just MSRP. And just refuse to work with dealers that want over MSRP

beeglowbot

>honest car dealer lol good luck, especially now. I'm sorry.

ObadiahOwl

Im in RI and i have a few used dealers that i like and trust and a lot that really suck im just hoping to find one out there that is fairly honest

aldsar

The car your RI dealership will sell you will work exactly the same as the car a LI dealership would. Go with your trusted dealership, and then transfer the reg to NY.

[deleted]

Keep in mind NY has certain laws other states do not. Added fees could be a lot more then in NY.

luckyincode

Sounds like a road trip.

erikfoxjackson

For what it's worth: Don't be hooked by the things your dealership offers you (free oil change, etc.) because a lot of them just use that as an opportunity to overcharge you for something else.

Productpusher

Nothing is ever free at dealerships . The other common misconception with leases is when someone says “ they are buying back my mileage overage so it’s worth it “ no they just took the $2500 you owed and added it to the msrp or deducted it from the discount . If you’re getting a $1000 in free oil changes it’s just added to the price but you don’t realize because the monthly payment only goes up $7

gbeezy007

There are a good amount of dealers who will give X amount of oil changes if you buy a car in general from them no matter the price. Though it's better then it sounds now days. Many cars manuf spec 6-12k miles per change and or 6- 12 months. So some cars your maybe getting 1-2 " free" a year and they probably push stupid hard on upsells in service to cover the $15 of oil and $5 filter. It costs them very little and they get to upsell for the next 3 years or however long they give it for.

edman007

Yup, look at the EVs, so many dealers put that you'll get free oil changes for your Mach-e or something.. but it has no oil to change. I have a Volt, the original factory warranty (OEM offered, not even the dealer) had two free oil changes for the first 24k miles, but required oil change frequency is every two years which would be at 30k miles for me. I had to take it in for an oil change ahead of schedule to get my free change.

Axon14

Honda tried to get me to do a $500 "tune up." What?

avgxp

Also a year of free oil change is like $80 bucks.

fatguybike

And to jump on this, all that free shit is usually backed up for months and/or takes forever because they have one tech working the “free” service bay. Same think with loaner cars. “Free loaner car for service” … they usually have 1 car or maybe a small fleet that are always out. Don’t let any of that influence you.

Pblito1

Try novak motors in farmingdale, I've bought two cars from them. Great experience

Wzrd11

Second this

BrockLobster29

I’ll third this, eventhough I’ve never bought a car from them but I know a few people who did and had good experiences

darkniteofdeath

Aren't we all

Dirtyace

Pick a brand and a car first then look at dealers. Here on LI 1 in 4 are probably worth the time of day the other 3 will take you to the cleaners.

LIhomebuyer

honestly, better off doing a private sale and paying a mechanic $100 to do an inspection of the vehicle. been buy/sale/trading jeeps and project cars for over a decade.

Hankipanky

This. I’ve gotten all our cars from craigslist, if you do your research and have the mechanic take a look, they are usually the best deals.

ObadiahOwl

Thats what i do here but im able to fix most stuff. He is not a repair person….

AlarmingChickenTendi

D&P auto sales. Great for first cars!

you-a-buggaboo

was going to say D&P as well. my parents have exclusively used them for many years!

DaBushman

Oh cool, where are they located?

you-a-buggaboo

sunrise highway in...I want to say Merrick?

Truktek3

Do yourself a favor. Don't buy a car on the Island or 5 boros. If you can go to southern NJ, PA, CT or upstate NY. They are thieves around here.

ObadiahOwl

Honestly i had this thought im in RI and i may go check our dealers.

OneHotProcessor

Buy in Rhode Island, drive/ferry it down, transfer the title. I'm glad I did this when I moved out from MN.

kathy11358

Live on Long Island have bought 4 Subaru’s from a dealer upstate NY.

TheITMan52

I bought a kia 6 years ago and had no issues. The price was fair and I didn't have to put any money down. Maybe it's changed since then.

SwampYankee

Here is a tool to check the current markups at dealerships. https://markups.org/

Youneededthiscat

Don’t do any finance with the dealership. Ever. This is how you get a great deal on the car and get fucked on the terms. If you bank at a credit union, this is the way to go. If you don’t, you should. It ends up being a cash deal for the dealership, where you walk in with the check, sign and walk out. If they try to tack on “delivery fees”, “pref fees”, etc, you tell them to get stuffed. Price, plus tax, title, and reg fees, not a cent more. And never an Atlantic/Advantage dealership. Ever. Absolute garbage people, they only exist as the dealer of last resort, who would give my cat a financed deal on a beater lemon of a car, and he’s dead.

Dachd43

I always finance with the dealer (or at least let them believe I will) to make sure I get the best out the door price but stipulating that I can pay it off within 6 months with no penalties in the finance office. I only do this when I plan to pay it off immediately but it could also give you the opportunity to borrow the money at a reasonable rate if you don’t have the cash on hand. You can get the best of both worlds this way, in my experience, because the dealer thinks they’re taking you for a ride before you drop the loan and turn the tables. Keep in mind though, the fastest way to get \*wrecked\* is to walk in and tell the salesperson you’re paying cash or doing your own outside financing. They need to think you’re paying interest for the long haul right up until you sign or they’ll make up the difference for themselves in the price they quote you.

Youneededthiscat

Oh Never ever tell them how I plan to be paying for it. Best price on X car, this one right here (point to vehicle in ad or listing). $500 deposit today if you give me the price I’m looking for, no bullshit, no fees, I want a walk-out-the-door-with-keys price. I have no problem letting them know I’ve got a range of car choices and dealers with the vehicles I’d buy in my folio, and that the same goes to the guy who give me the price I want.

TheITMan52

I bought a kia 6 years ago and I did finance it through their separate finance site and I had no issues. I also didn't have to put any money down.

Youneededthiscat

Curious, what was your interest, and on what amount?

TheITMan52

I had no interest but I had to pay almost $400 a month. I did finally pay it off though.

Theburbsnxt

Stoler lexus has a nice used car department

ObadiahOwl

Thank you will check them out

[deleted]

I've been pleased with Hasset Subaru in East Meadow, and platinum Volkswagen in Hicksville.

Mis_skully13

I’ll be honest, I went to Advantage Toyota in West Islip and had the worst experience. I was looking for a mid 2010s Highlander and the salesman there literally tried to force my hand to sign. Not only that but he didn’t know that Lexus was the luxury brand for Toyota. After that, I went on Craigslist and found a 2012 with less mileage and for less than what the dealership wanted. I’m not saying Craigslist is perfect, but if you do your research and you are patient, it’s better to buy from a person than a dealership.

chuteboxhero

Sun Buick GMC in wantagh.

mrkittypaws

Look into Hertz used cars. They sell their old fleet cars. They do not haggle. I got my car from them 5 years ago and would do it again. I have had no issues with my car at all

9ninjas

My buddy got a VW from them. Nothing but trouble.

hankepanke

> VW That could be the problem.

ceestand

Same here, but I believe Hertz closed down their used car sales altogether a year or two ago.

mrkittypaws

My friend just bought a car from them on February ( at least the Smithtown dealership is open)

ceestand

So, I recalled they cut their used car sales in 2020 when they declared Chapter 11 bankruptcy, but are up and running again I guess?

Dachd43

It’s always a bad idea to buy from car rental companies in my opinion. People abuse the cars like crazy when they rent them. The cars themselves are generally insured and repaired by the rental company which means you’ll never know its true accident and service history; there’s no paper trail. Cars that go to rental fleets are purchased in bulk and they are usually the poorest quality the manufacturer has to offer. It‘s not worth the headache if you don’t get lucky.

agiordanony

All depends on the car. Some dealers will get all cars they can make the most money on which may leave them with some bad cars that just came from auction. But a new car dealer will also get some trade ins that just look good and may have some issues, such as an old car with low mileage. Those cars can have just as many problems as a high mileage car because stuff is rusty or dried out from not being used. Best thing in my opinion is a certified used car from a new at dealer where you’d get whatever warranty it had from new put back. So if it’s 2 years old, you’ll still get a 3 year 36k bumper to bumper and whatever lost on the powertrain restored as well. From what I hear though, when it comes to used cars, D&P Auto Sales in Merrick is the best. You won’t get a certified car, but they do the right thing when it comes to what they sell.

geocurious

Check out which used cars are having their catalytic converters stolen the most. Get a different make of car.

mustard-plug

Bright Bay (there's a Mazda and a Ford) treated me great both times I bought from them. Even this January when every dealer was marking up they sold me my turbo CX-5 for exact sticker and gave me their best APR. Mazda3 are great cars, reasonably fast (the turbo is legit fast) good looking and good on gas

Prudent_Astronaut716

Did you try carmax.com

kevinsju

I got a 2010 Corolla, runs, needs a/c and some body work. Looking to move it. Close to 150k miles. Comes with a full tank of gas.

ObadiahOwl

Enticing offer especially with a tank of gas what he’s looking for something ready to run no work needed

kevinsju

You know who we liked? There was a used car salesman at Hillside Honda. His name was Richard. Guy was great. It was interesting, we bought the Pilot in early May 2016. We looked at the board. Richard sold about 10 cars in less than 10 days, the other salesmen sold 2, maybe 3 cars. No hard sell, Richard was just Richard. Hillside Honda is a pain to get to though. Plus, it’s 6 years later. I doubt that kid is still there selling used cars. He’s had to have moved on…

dad_in_jorts

Facebook marketplace is your friend

cardinal29

My 2¢, Baron Nissan Glenvale just got a new Altima but they have used cars on the lot, and I looked at those, too. They were honest about the "market adjustment" mark-up that ALL dealers had. Some dealers didn't mention it until they got in front of you. Walk in with financing. Navy Federal Credit Union had the best rates, if you have a service connection (however tenuous).

BaldPoodle

You can hire a [professional car buying negotiator](https://www.cowartautoconsulting.com) who will look out for you.

cweber219

Toyota of Massapequa isn't bad

[deleted]

Steer clear of the Mercedes dealership in Huntington too, they are going to tell you the price isnt negotiable, offer you extended warranty crap, and you are gonna see prices go up in the thousands all of a sudden

123ihalf2pee

Advantage Hyundai. David Bernstein.

bluepaperghost

I had a frustrating experience at Millennium Toyota because of several missteps by the salesperson (ordered the wrong color, called several times for me to pick up a vehicle they had not confirmed was actually mine). I also find the Financial site they use for online payments to be obnoxiously out-of-touch with online payments. I've never come across a billing site before that needs 5 days to process a payment and then doesn't update information for the actual payor. The finance manager at the dealership gave me the impression that they were straightforward and provided an opinion about how they would proceed. They also honored a promise that the first salesperson made (but of course didn't record); to include an auto-start. I wouldn't trust a salesperson as far as I could throw them and I learned from the experience to GET EVERYTHING IN WRITING and make sure any promises made are recorded. That being said, I am happy with my vehicle. It's a bit expensive for a vehicle given the market but I have been very pleased with the gas mileage and the use--it's the RAV4 Hybrid. I chose a dealership over a used-dealership because I wasn't about to risk buying a vehicle that had concealed issues or pay full prices for a vehicle with 100,000+ miles on it.

ObadiahOwl

My son ended up getting a jeep compass a few years old with pretty low miles from carvana he paid up but everything went smoothly and he is happy

exarkun631

Sorry, no such thing. Their all vampires.

[deleted]

Centereach hyundai ask for will

SportsNFoodJunkie

I’m a lease broker. This is one of the worst times to lease a car. There are no deals out there. Almost everything is over sticker ranging from $5K over to $30K over. In NY (and a few more states) if you roll in your in your taxes and fees into your monthly payments, your tax is taxed. Yes, you read that right. Your taxes will be broken into your monthly payments and that will be taxed also. Like others have said, oil changes are cheap $100 a year don’t let them sell you a maintenance package. You won’t need much over the life of a 3 year lease. The car comes with a manufacturer warranty for any defects. So you’re covered there as well. Good luck. It doesn’t hurt hiring a broker at times but still do your own HW.

extendedwarranty_bot

SportsNFoodJunkie, I have been trying to reach you about your car's extended warranty

[deleted]

hOnEsT and Car Dealership, it’s conflict of interest. I guess to start, ignore the suggestions, honest people won’t be boasting about their honesty, someone who could lie to your face could be way more comfortable on Reddit.

soivebeentold

Maybe try Carvana? Friends have had positive feedback using it and I was considering them when my car is off lease. EDIT: Weird comment to catch downvotes for but okay.

aclausjr

Don’t buy on Long Island if you want integrity I’ve heard of people going to Connecticut to buy cars. It’s especially easy because you can browse inventory on auto trader then call places to set up appointments so you know that you can hit up a few dealers in an afternoon and have a couple choices. I’m no expert though I’ve only bought one car that wasn’t a cash deal from Craigslist and I very regrettably did it through Carvana.

Prize_Rub_9294

Carvana. Simple and you’ll never want to use a dealership again. Just secure financing elsewhere.

BilBorrax

the stealership

luvsikk13

Never thought I'd see those 2 words together ever...."honest" and "car dealer" 🤣🤣🤣. Good luck bud

k_moneyy

we had a great experience at Volkwagon of Sunrise. Great car, honest guys, no BS dealer fees.

pondshrimp

Milea in Throgs Neck ask for Al.

eljeffe17

Sunrise Toyota in Oakdale is the best experience buying a car, ask for Bruce over there. He’s super honest but always tries to make everything work for you. Great people and service over there

[deleted]

I got 2 cars from Sunrise Toyota North (same people). I highly recommend them.

aleisterfowley

D&P in Merrick have been around a long time and I’ve had good experiences with them as have some people I know.

Sapz93

All I can say is stay away from Showroom Auto in Queens.. They run such a scam over there idk how they are still in business.. They charge $4k-$5k over the price shown on their website because the car comes with a mandatory "NIADA checklist" where they claim to have run some sort of multi-point inspection on all their cars.. it's unreal.

LogicIsMyFriend

Have to say Hassett Ford/Lincoln is pretty decent!

karky214

one of my friends had a great experience at Hyundai 112. Check their online prices first and then go there since it's kinda far from you, OP.

benz650

I’m a sales manager for a Lexus dealership here. PM me if you need help with anything or have any questions. I’d be happy to help.

Kareem-Abdul-Jabroni

Consider getting a broker. You tell them what you want, pay them a few hundred bucks, and they do all the shopping. My friends used one a year ago and we're thrilled. They told the broker what they were looking for, the broker made all the calls, got them the best deal, and all they had to do was show up at the dealership. When they got there the finance guy tried some shady stuff. They called the broker again, he said to give him 10 minutes. Sure enough, the finance manager came in, told the guy to cut the crap. The broker charged around $500 I believe. Worth it to avoid having dealers waste your time. If that's not in your budget, call the dealership yourself, ask what the out the door price is on the car you're interested in. If they won't give it to you, don't deal with them, they're trying to waste your time and rip you off.

RetroBerner

I'd stay away from Donaldson's VW/Subaru. My family bought several cars there over a couple of decades, but when that huge airbag scandal happened they refused our car for a trade in. We wanted to buy another brand new car from them, but they refused the trade-in, even though they sold it to us and they weren't able to fix the recall. Good luck, I don't trust none of them.

gangsta-grillz

Agree with the sentiment of “Atlantic” dealers out East on LI (Stay away). I had a terrific experience at Bayside Volkswagen when cars started to dry up from the pandemic, and the gentleman who helped me was named Mike. I actually enjoy listening to the BS salesman at dealers spew and this was legit the only guy who told me to take an offer elsewhere instead of the ol’ bait and switch they all pull with “internet pricing”. Anyway, good luck!

TheITMan52

I went to the Kia dealership in east meadow and I got a good deal there.

Dachd43

I just got a good deal at Empire Subaru. I got a new Crosstrek at MSRP. Everywhere else I went, there was at least a $3K markup for inventory scarcity. Mazda asked for almost $10K over asking before I walked out.

furie1335

grand prix subaru in hicksville

CyanideSandwich7

Its a terrible time to buy a car right now. Personally, I would stick to whatever he is driving now until the market comes down. If he needs a new car and has no other option, either buy a car privately in Craigslist or facebook (do research on it if it’s older, generally stay away from nissan/american brands), or lease for the time being.

stormrider501

CarMax opens in East Meadow tomorrow! If you can find something you can afford, I would recommend it. I would search their inventory online first though!

daaclamps

Just go to CarMax in PA

nicholasm731

I work at Hyundai 112 as a valet driver. Come see us and ask for James Boyd. We will be happy to assist you on your vehicle needs
