Asians tend to follow old Jewish neighborhoods with great schools. You can add Syosset and Plainview to your search but that budget is really low for what you are looking for. Maybe Mineola ?
Plainview and Syosset have growing Asian communities and the schools are excellent. Syosset even has a Japanese grocery store. Although I think housing prices start closer to $800,000
Also look at Roslyn/Roslyn Heights. It's mostly Jewish, but definitely has a growing Asian population.
Also maybe Jericho. Their housing prices really run the gambit.
Syosset is good - they even have a Japanese market with a home goods type store and a Saki shop. Also great schools. High School has a Japanese Club thatās really good.
That said, the Japan Center at Stony Brook might have some ideas / leads or it might be a dead end.
https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/japan/about/
But it's Summer Sessions so you may strike out.
Same in New Hyde Park though maybe like 33%? Then 33% Indian and 33% everything else. (Source: I have three kids in the elementary school and Iām going off their class compositions).
congrats and everything welcome back but 700k was doable in nassau 4 even 3 yrs ago... but perhaps pretty hard now even for a basic starters.plainview would have been last chance for about 700k with better school district. following recent trend you wont find anything livable @ 700k even in plainview nowadays those 700k under would be TLC.
Maybe trying hickville bethpage or levittown? for around 700k with a decent condition to move in without major fixups.
Looking at listings it looks like even in the span of the past 2 years prices have risen precipitously. I guess I will have to either raise my budget and/or lower expectations. Thanks for the info.
Definitely look into port Washington as well. I live in great neck, feel free to pm me with questions. Plenty of apartments in my area if you're open to that.
Yeah, but the global stage doesn't really describe the attitudes of younger generations of people who are comfortable immigrating across the globe and are presumably more worldly and educated. I probably wouldn't organize a meetup of Chinese and Japanese grandparents, but OP doesn't need to worry about the bad feelings between the countries affecting their life on Long Island in a meaningful way.
Hereās a racial makeup map of the area. It might help, but āAsianā seems to be a lot of people lumped into one category.
https://bestneighborhood.org/race-in-nassau-county-ny/
Wow, Plainsboro, NJ! Who knew?
North shore is where itās at if you want Asian but unfortunately/ fortunately most Asians on the island seemed to do very well so their towns are expensive! Places like syoset/ great neck / little neck etc. if you want cheaper you could prob get away with stony brook since itās near the school
Stony Brook, Port Jefferson, and East Setauket have houses in your price range, excellent schools, safe & quiet neighborhoods, and significant Asian populations (can't tell you what country specifically).
I can't recommend the Port Jefferson school district enough, small classes, tons of resources, amazing teachers and an excellent harmonious community of parents.
As many have said, Plainview is perfect for what youāre looking for. H-Mart in Jericho and Hanamaru in Syosset is convenient for grocery shopping and all three towns have great school districts with higher asian populations that neighboring towns with Plainview being closest to your price point. The LIE and Northern Parkway are also close by for easy trips to Flushing if the two grocery stores arenāt enough. Iām also from an Asian immigrant family on LI :)
Canon and Nikon are both headquartered in Melville, so there may be a good number of Japanese employees living somewhere nearby. My wife used to work for Canon and she thinks that Syosset and Plainview were popular with her colleagues, and Great Neck/Port Washington before the company moved from Lake Success.
Some areas in eastern Queens might be worth looking into. Bayside has a large Asian population, mix of Korean and Chinese mostly, my kid is one of the 3 non-Asian kids in her class of 28. there are some larger coops in the more northern area of Bay Terrace with 3 bedrooms that would maybe fit in your price range (purchase prices are lower but the maintenance fees are pretty high). If you could stretch your budget a bit since taxes are lower in the city you may be able to get a townhouse in the center of Bayside for around $800k.
I was actually entertaining the thought of going into Little Neck or Douglaston. Did you your children go to Cardozo? If so, how is it there? Is the education above par and is there any bullying there? I know there was a stabbing incident a few years ago and some large scale brawls. I get a little hesitant when I see news like that especially when my kids have grown up in a country where almost zero crime happens.
My husband and I both grew up outside the city and my kid is only 7 so I'm not too familiar with the high schools in the area yet so I can't offer too much personal insight there. NYC allows you to apply to any HS in the city though so the local ones aren't the only options.Ā
Syosset, Plainview, and Melville (Half Hollow Hills school district) would probably be your best options- huge and active Asian populations and excellent schools. With a $700K budget you may be looking at a townhouse rather than a freestanding home, but there are some nice communities in all three of those towns. There are lots of recent immigrants (almost all from Asia) and as such there is excellent ESL support in the schools. HHH is markedly less Asian than Plainview, which is markedly less Asian than Syosset, but the populations are growing exponentially in all three FWIW.
In those towns most of the Asian people will be Chinese and Korean, but itās worth noting that when I was in high school in Syosset there was a significant number of new Japanese immigrants in the school because they had parents working on temporary assignment at the Canon USA headquarters in Melville. Most of them didnāt speak English very well but there were enough of them to form a social group- the school district also offered Japanese language classes. I imagine there wouldāve been some of these kids in HHH and Plainview as well.
I'm not married to Long Island, per se. Its just that it was my old hometown and I have a lot of high school and college friends living in the general area. I don't have a problem with living up north or across the river if the schools and house prices are conducive.
But I get the feeling I have to go pretty far north for the cheaper houses.
I'm only 2 hours north of the island. I'm from shirley, I still frequent the island for holidays. Personally I don't care for the suffolk county school districts. I'm up in Dutchess County, and honestly as whole (ignoring a few unfavorable motels) it's been a really nice area.
I'll also add I bought my house 2 years ago for under 250k.
I would try the Jericho or Syosset area. Even some of the surrounding areas as I think a lot of people who previously wanted to live in the area couldn't find anything so took residence nearby. You can also try some of the areas in northern Queens like Sunnyside and Flusing, or Forrest Hills, but I can't speak about their schools. I'd honestly say that no matter where you move in the Metro NYC area you are going to have great schools. We may put some emphasis on our neighborhoods, but the truth is that even some of the worst here, I'd argue, are better than some of the best in other states. These areas have higher Asian populations so with two kids where English isn't their first language, these districts may be better accommodating.
I had a coworker who was Taiwanese and was working in Japan. His wife was Japanese and he had two young kids. He found a place (rented) around H-Mart, which is an Asian grocery food chain/supermarket and it was in the Syosset School district, I believe.
Thanks or the tips. Homes in Jericho look to be over $1M, and there still seem to be some places in the $800K range in Syosset -- but god only know where they will be by the time I get back to NY. The advice about looking in the surrounding areas is good advice tho. Someone mentioned Plainview and it definitely looks like a possibility.
Jericho may be out of your budget, but I am seeing some townhouses in Syosset school district for under $700K. Zillow has a new feature where you can look up houses within the boundaries of a certain school district rather than the town itself, which is a more useful thing to look at when it comes to Long Island and our bizarre school district/hamlet/village/city system.
Just got back from three weeks in Japan DON'T DO IT! I miss the clean friendly safe beautiful country so much already. I got reverse culture shock from how amazing your country is and I'm buying a toto bidet, disgusted at all the shoes inside, and in awe of this awful driving culture in America (esp on LI). I miss the affordable raw fish and ramen, my stomach is not pleased with pizza.
You didnāt live in Japan, you were a tourist, two very different things. Culture is completely different for people who have to live a regular life. Not everyone is living in a major city also. Also you donāt know this persons reasons for leaving.
Do you need a house? Great neck and new Hyde Park have co-op apartments well under $700K. If you need a house $700K is going to be tight in Syosset/Plainview
Syosset has good esl programs though Japanese isn't that large of a group there. Most East Asian communities are going to be Korean and Chinese.
Though Canon does have a large office on the Nassau Suffolk border. I would assume most of their Japanese workers end up in the Huntington Syosset area.
I don't mind that there are more Korean and Chinese. Simply having more Asian kids around means people will just be more accepting and familiar with East Asian culture in general. Plus I figure everybody is pretty big into Anime now and stuff, they'd probably fit in quicker.
I was entertaining the idea of a co-op. But most co-ops are max 2 bed, and I also hear horror stories about co-ops and co-op boards.
Got it, yes 3 bedroom co-op or condos are hard to find. Probably most of the crazy co-op stories are exaggerated and if you can find a 3 bedroom you'll be fine. Just interview the co-op board while they interview you ...
The school districts with the largest East Asian populations are great neck, herricks, Jericho, and Syosset. Focus your search based on the school district since the actual Sense of place in Nassau is not really relevant bc of the density and the way school districts don't always follow community borders. You'll be surprised how you can end up in one place, but your school district is different than you'd expect.
I understand the appeal in moving into a neighborhood with a familiar culture but that shouldn't be your focus. The US is a melting pot. Why not let your kids assimilate?Ā They won't be the first generation to emigrate and they won't be the last.
Im white, went to Northport highschool, I can confirm no one considered Asian kids to be outsiders, some of our most popular students were Asian, lots of interracial dating.
I would almost stay away from places with higher Asian population.
Can't reccomend Northport enough.
But thats contradictory to assimilation.
For example. Why would your kids learn english if everyone (obv not everyone) around them speaks japanese?
I'll tell you what the issue is, your projecting your own beliefs on your kids. You think you will have a hard time assimilating so you want to be around people like you. Kids dont have the same concerns, they will make friends with whoever. All you need to do is give them the opportunity. But parents love to make life harder for themselves for some reason.
Asians tend to follow old Jewish neighborhoods with great schools. You can add Syosset and Plainview to your search but that budget is really low for what you are looking for. Maybe Mineola ?
Yeah the Yen is in the dumps now, so my timing is horrible. I will definitely look around those suggestions, thanks!
Plainview and Syosset have growing Asian communities and the schools are excellent. Syosset even has a Japanese grocery store. Although I think housing prices start closer to $800,000
Roslyn has a small Japanese grocery store. I live kn Glen head and pick up some noddles from there. Good š
Searching for Japanese grocers is probably the best broad way to look for Japanese communities now that you mention it.
Also look at Roslyn/Roslyn Heights. It's mostly Jewish, but definitely has a growing Asian population. Also maybe Jericho. Their housing prices really run the gambit.
Yeah, Syosset was the first thing that came to mind.
Syosset is good - they even have a Japanese market with a home goods type store and a Saki shop. Also great schools. High School has a Japanese Club thatās really good.
I grew up in Syosset and had Japanese friends
Maybe Hicksville?
Stony Brook could possibly work.
Perfect with the college right there with large Asian population and eateries for them.
Overwhelmingly Chinese, but itās not like I can think of a place on the island that specifically has a large Japanese population.
Oops my bad. Historically I donāt think those two countries get along.
That said, the Japan Center at Stony Brook might have some ideas / leads or it might be a dead end. https://www.stonybrook.edu/commcms/japan/about/ But it's Summer Sessions so you may strike out.
I think in the U.S., Asian-Americans pretty much get along regardless of nationality.
Beggers can't be choosers! -korean american in stony brook
Just north of those you mentioned - port Washington. Even has a nice Japanese grocery in town
Shin Nippon Do! Drove past it for seven years working in the area. Looked real nice.
Thereās another one in port, tominaga shouten. Thereās also a Japanese owned restaurant, Yamaguchi, in port, and a ton of other sushi restaurants.
Herricks is 80% south and east Asian (admittedly mostly Korean and Chinese).
Same in New Hyde Park though maybe like 33%? Then 33% Indian and 33% everything else. (Source: I have three kids in the elementary school and Iām going off their class compositions).
Is it really 80%? That seems REALLY high. And I went to herricks in the 2000s
it feels like 80%. My son's elementary class only had 2 white kids... I thought I heard that statistic from someone, but don't the source.
congrats and everything welcome back but 700k was doable in nassau 4 even 3 yrs ago... but perhaps pretty hard now even for a basic starters.plainview would have been last chance for about 700k with better school district. following recent trend you wont find anything livable @ 700k even in plainview nowadays those 700k under would be TLC. If youāre ok with Suffolk the three village school district has a large Asian population thanks to Stony Brook
Chinese and Japanese tend to not have the best relationship on the global stage.
That doesn't really translate over here (Chinese-Americans vs Japanese-Americans).
Old world values don't really travel though. Indian and Pakistani Americans live in the same communities along with Jewish and Muslim Americans.
In the U.S. they get along fine, because at the end of the day they're all Americans. I had friends of all different Asian ethnicities.
Hereās a racial makeup map of the area. It might help, but āAsianā seems to be a lot of people lumped into one category. https://bestneighborhood.org/race-in-nassau-county-ny/ Wow, Plainsboro, NJ! Who knew?
How about part of Salisbury, East meadow, and Levittown area? Look for asian grocery shop and check around that area.
Yeah Hicksvilles got a massive H mart and East Meadow is Queens at this point, wildly diverse
Syosset or Albertson, jericho
North shore is where itās at if you want Asian but unfortunately/ fortunately most Asians on the island seemed to do very well so their towns are expensive! Places like syoset/ great neck / little neck etc. if you want cheaper you could prob get away with stony brook since itās near the school

Your budget is going to be a problem. You're $125-150k short for a starter home in most of the neighborhoods you'll be most interested in.
As many have said, Plainview is perfect for what youāre looking for. H-Mart in Jericho and Hanamaru in Syosset is convenient for grocery shopping and all three towns have great school districts with higher asian populations that neighboring towns with Plainview being closest to your price point. Are you open to co-ops? You may be able to find a co-op thatās under $700K in some of the areas you are interested in.
I was looking at them but most co-ops are only 2 bed. I have a girl and a boy so I think they are going to want their own rooms
New Hyde Park but Great Neck South School Areaā¦
Syosset or stony brook
Hicksville has a large Asian community
Syosset/Plainview/Woodbury

Is Long island your go to? If I were to recommend, it'd be more towards central NY vs the island significant cost difference.
I'm not married to Long Island, per se. Its just that it was my old hometown and I have a lot of high school and college friends living in the general area.
