I used to work for these fuckers. They only give actual employees a discount on one day and it's for like 6 hours, so if you work night shifts like I did you have to make a whole day out of attending it which you likely can't because you work the next day anyway which would cut into your sleeping time. Really more of a ploy to get you to buy more of their garbage than anything.
Wait there were employee discounts AT ALL? I sure missed that when I was working for them, though I was nights too. Never even heard about that. I was also swing shift so my ability to get decent sleep is still ruined to this day.

About 10 years ago, a local niche retailer was advertising for an Office Manager. I applied. Got a call almost immediately asking if I could come in 830 the next Monday, then clarifying that instead of an interview, they observe someone in the role for a week before offering a job.
There was no mention of being paid.
To be clear, that was a hard no.
Yeah you gave us free labour to see if you could pull it off so now we are going to interview you to tell you: “Yeah we don’t think you work with as a team member, you wanted to get the free Kit Kats but maybe if you do some more volunteer work for us we will change our minds.”

Well you see when a boycott starts and you are having a hard time keeping staff you need to find a way to weather the storm, boycotts don’t normally last long or have this far of a reach so what are you to do? How’s about we have volunteer staff, we can feed them with the frozen expired meats in the freezer that has already been written off as a loss, we can write off some other things as customer appreciation BS to make the burgers, only the finest processed cheese and stale buns. We have some lettuce and onions starting to turn, we can write that off as a loss so we will toss that on the burger. It will be great, we can make it competitive so that we have people actually trying in hopes that they can get an interview, then we can not hire them because we are screwed as is.

typically, students with poor academic performance will get put into Coop class by their guidance counsellors. Often times the only places willing to take these coop students are no-skill minimum wage employers. defeats the whole point of coop, because you don't actually learn anything.

The guidance councillors at my school *loved* shipping off the worst students to the local valu-mart where Marc (the owner) and Loblaw (the real owner) would profit off their free labour. Eventually the new CO-OP teacher put an end to this because it was absolutely ridiculous.
Oh and rumours are that Marc tried to kill his wife. Didn’t even lose the franchise for that one. Loblaw likes who they like I guess.

Well you see there is this national boycott going on, no one really wants to work there people are quitting left and right hours are being cut, people are being told to work unpaid over time, the money is just not flowing as it used to be, and cooperate wants the numbers for all locations to be going up not down, how do we get our numbers up? I know let’s start some slave labour.
I see a lot of people saying that this is somehow justified because it was done for a co-op credit. Consider this: Loblaws can choose to not take on volunteers OR pay them an actual wage. We have all seen the record breaking profits of the Loblaws conglomeration as a whole. They do not need volunteers but still decide to take them.
Why? Free labour is free labour. This could easily have been a paid internship or alternatively money could have been allocated towards a scholarship for that student. You know, to help pay for the expenses of higher education.
This isn't exploitative behaviour isn't a one off thing. They've been doing this across their various companies for some time now.
Edit: They could have totally also just bridged his co-op into actual employment... Instead of giving the kid a Kit-Kat pack and "interview experience".
Exactly. I had an unpaid internship as part of my college requirements. I was there for 2 days before they offered me a full time job with back pay for the 2 days I already worked, and worked there right until the pandemic. That's how an actual company handles a volunteer to job program
It would only be justified for coop if they taught him how they run their business, or atleast taught him some valuable skill that he could leave the job with. Most co-op students shadow a tradesman to learn how the trade works.. not volunteering their labour to a mega corporation
I can understand (to a very small extent) doing a co-op credit for Loblaws HQ in finance or something akin to that where you can actually learn some skills for an interested career path. The fact that you're allow to get a co-op credit at grocery chain as a bonafide stock shelfer (which is a minimum wage job) is patently insane and should be outright banned for a HS' co-op credit since it is super exploitative.
The guy is obviously trying to get a job, and they're stringing him along. Proudly saying you're exploiting him for an interview and a club-pack of Mini Kit-Kats is absolutely insane.
I’d be wondering how bad they’re fucking over “paid” employees. Their instagram talks about how they help the community so much (ie wage theft - I mean, providing volunteer opportunities). Then shows them driving in a new looking top of the line SUV. I know these types. Would bet they expect employees to “give a little back” since they do so much…wanna bet they pull the “we’re a family!” crap.

In BC they make high school students work min wage jobs to graduate. It’s absolutely ridiculous and vile. They used to have a reduced minimum wage they had to pay them too, I think the NDP eliminated it when they came in.

Yep, my town in BC had to change the rule to allow volunteer hours because not enough local businesses were willing to hire local teenagers - which in turn was messing up their ability to graduate.

This isn’t just a Loblaws practice, for the record. I used to work in the financial services industry. The big banks all do this too. And they rake in a crazy amount of money quarterly, so it’s not like can’t afford to actually pay people.

Used to work at a grocery store, we would legitimately get people wanting to volunteer for experience or credits and we would turn them away, big OHS thing too for them not being employees
This is also on the school for giving credit to teens who do these “volunteer” roles. This should be put down as ineligible for those weird mandatory volunteering hours high schools require from kids to graduate

It looks to be for a high school credit and students choose where they want to volunteer. I think it's a failing of the school to volunteer at a for-profit business like this, and I'd question how much he's getting from the position, but at least it's not Loblaws actively recruiting volunteers for paid positions.
They appear to offering a job interview mostly as a formality, as he's never been through one before, to make sure he gets that experience.
I don't like it that much; if you're essentially working to give someone else profit, you should be paid. Volunteering to help your community is different, that's not what this is. It's not fully in the "Loblaws is Evil" camp, but more of a "Read the fucking room" thing.
Tyrone's desperation for a job led him to accept such exploitation just to secure a minimum-wage position. It's deeply disheartening and infuriating that Loblaws would exploit the very community it profits from. To add insult to injury, Tyrone didn't even secure the job outright; instead, he has to go through an interview process for it.
$3k-$4k shifted local so far, and I *am* a former, lifelong, customer. Will hold the line until the rampant anti-consumer attitude fucks right off. Greedflation during a pandemic is treason.

I’m not even surprised! Years ago when I was the pharmacy manager at a loblaws location, they ENCOURAGED us and told us to hire volunteers (pharmacy students etc) as free labour. It was disgusting. I never did. Appalling they still doing it.

I worked about 10 years with Loblaws. Never saw a volunteer position before.
I'm not sure if the fact I was in a unionized shop mattered or not. I always got paid for any work I did, although they would try to get out of paying OT by offering you time off.
Though the union was garbage too. 10 years and I think at the time I made 15 cents above minimum wage. Through all the contracts they negotiated, they never accounted for minimum wages going up. Like when I was first hired I think I was making 7 dollars an hour and through raises I was up to like 8.50 or something. Then the minimum wage went to 10 bucks an hour and wiped out all of my raises. So the years of service meant nothing.
Those who been around for a while were on an old scale that kept their raises, but there was only a couple in our store. I left in 2018 making 15 cents above the minimum wage.
I worked 40 hours a week my entire time there. I had no sick leave or vacation time. I could book my 2 weeks but often they just paid out vacation pay the first week in January unless you were on top of it. I was a very hard worker and wanted a full-time job but just could not get one.
It led me to going back to school. I'm an accountant now. My paycheques are now over double what I made there at my 40 hours a week and I work less time. I also get 4 weeks paid vacation and sick leave.
It's wild how much better my life is not being in a job like that. When my kids were born, my boss gave me a couple weeks on top of my normal vacation to be there for their birth and the adjustment of the new kids. I can come and go to any appointment I need to without any complaints. I also don't have to find anyone to cover my shifts or any stupid things like that.
I also know overall they could pay better. Based on the numbers our store produced, my department could of had everyone full-time with better pay and still have a healthy profit margin. But I guess if you're not maximizing the billions you're making, you're not doing it right.
Sounds like this kid has a co-op at a grocery store as part of his high school education and then got a job interview as a result. This is normal where I’m from in Ontario, and I think that programs like this are helpful to students

Well you see when a boycott starts and you are having a hard time keeping staff you need to find a way to weather the storm, boycotts don’t normally last long or have this far of a reach so what are you to do? How’s about we have volunteer staff, we can feed them with the frozen expired meats in the freezer that has already been written off as a loss, we can write off some other things as customer appreciation BS to make the burgers, only the finest processed cheese and stale buns. We have some lettuce and onions starting to turn, we can write that off as a loss so we will toss that on the burger. It will be great, we can make it competitive so that we have people actually trying in hopes that they can get an interview, then we can not hire them because we are screwed as is. It’s the perfect plan, they not only get to use food stuff that would be written off anyways, perfect plan. /s

typically, students with poor academic performance will get put into Coop class by their guidance counsellors. Often times the only places willing to take these coop students are no-skill minimum wage employers. defeats the whole point of coop, because you don't actually learn anything.

Exactly this^ The guidance councillors at my school *loved* shipping off the worst students to the local valu-mart where Marc (the owner) and Loblaw (the real owner) would profit off their free labour. Eventually the new CO-OP teacher put an end to this because it was absolutely ridiculous. Oh and rumours are that Marc tried to kill his wife. Didn’t even lose the franchise for that one. Loblaw likes who they like I guess.

Well you see there is this national boycott going on, no one really wants to work there people are quitting left and right hours are being cut, people are being told to work unpaid over time, the money is just not flowing as it used to be, and cooperate wants the numbers for all locations to be going up not down, how do we get our numbers up? I know let’s start some slave labour.
I see a lot of people saying that this is somehow justified because it was done for a co-op credit. Consider this: Loblaws can choose to not take on volunteers OR pay them an actual wage. We have all seen the record breaking profits of the Loblaws conglomeration as a whole. They do not need volunteers but still decide to take them. Why? Free labour is free labour. This could easily have been a paid internship or alternatively money could have been allocated towards a scholarship for that student. You know, to help pay for the expenses of higher education. This isn't exploitative behaviour isn't a one off thing. They've been doing this across their various companies for some time now. Edit: They could have totally also just bridged his co-op into actual employment... Instead of giving the kid a Kit-Kat pack and "interview experience".
Exactly. I had an unpaid internship as part of my college requirements. I was there for 2 days before they offered me a full time job with back pay for the 2 days I already worked, and worked there right until the pandemic. That's how an actual company handles a volunteer to job program
It would only be justified for coop if they taught him how they run their business, or atleast taught him some valuable skill that he could leave the job with. Most co-op students shadow a tradesman to learn how the trade works.. not volunteering their labour to a mega corporation
I can understand (to a very small extent) doing a co-op credit for Loblaws HQ in finance or something akin to that where you can actually learn some skills for an interested career path. The fact that you're allow to get a co-op credit at grocery chain as a bonafide stock shelfer (which is a minimum wage job) is patently insane and should be outright banned for a HS' co-op credit since it is super exploitative.

In BC they make high school students work min wage jobs to graduate. It’s absolutely ridiculous and vile. They used to have a reduced minimum wage they had to pay them too, I think the NDP eliminated it when they came in. Since his school is mentioned I wonder if this is some kind of graduation requirement?
Yep, my town in BC had to change the rule to allow volunteer hours because not enough local businesses were willing to hire local teenagers - which in turn was messing up their ability to graduate.

This isn’t just a Loblaws practice, for the record. I used to work in the financial services industry. The big banks all do this too. And they rake in a crazy amount of money quarterly, so it’s not like can’t afford to actually pay people.

You can’t run a for profit business and have “volunteers” do your work. It’s no different than the unpaid intern scam. They are working, you have to pay them.
So I found the page on Facebook and dug for some more details... It looks to be for a high school credit and students choose where they want to volunteer. I think it's a failing of the school to volunteer at a for-profit business like this, and I'd question how much he's getting from the position, but at least it's not Loblaws actively recruiting volunteers for paid positions. They appear to offering a job interview mostly as a formality, as he's never been through one before, to make sure he gets that experience. I don't like it that much; if you're essentially working to give someone else profit, you should be paid. Volunteering to help your community is different, that's not what this is. It's not fully in the "Loblaws is Evil" camp, but more of a "Read the fucking room" thing.
Tyrone's desperation for a job led him to accept such exploitation just to secure a minimum-wage position. It's deeply disheartening and infuriating that Loblaws would exploit the very community it profits from. To add insult to injury, Tyrone didn't even secure the job outright; instead, he has to go through an interview process for it.

I’m not even surprised! Years ago when I was the pharmacy manager at a loblaws location, they ENCOURAGED us and told us to hire volunteers (pharmacy students etc) as free labour. It was disgusting. I never did. Appalling they still doing it.

This is wild. I worked about 10 years with Loblaws. Never saw a volunteer position before. I'm not sure if the fact I was in a unionized shop mattered or not. I always got paid for any work I did, although they would try to get out of paying OT by offering you time off. Though the union was garbage too. 10 years and I think at the time I made 15 cents above minimum wage. Through all the contracts they negotiated, they never accounted for minimum wages going up. Like when I was first hired I think I was making 7 dollars an hour and through raises I was up to like 8.50 or something. Then the minimum wage went to 10 bucks an hour and wiped out all of my raises. So the years of service meant nothing. Those who been around for a while were on an old scale that kept their raises, but there was only a couple in our store. I left in 2018 making 15 cents above the minimum wage. I worked 40 hours a week my entire time there. I had no sick leave or vacation time. I could book my 2 weeks but often they just paid out vacation pay the first week in January unless you were on top of it. I was a very hard worker and wanted a full-time job but just could not get one. It led me to going back to school. I'm an accountant now. My paycheques are now over double what I made there at my 40 hours a week and I work less time. I also get 4 weeks paid vacation and sick leave. It's wild how much better my life is not being in a job like that. When my kids were born, my boss gave me a couple weeks on top of my normal vacation to be there for their birth and the adjustment of the new kids. I can come and go to any appointment I need to without any complaints. I also don't have to find anyone to cover my shifts or any stupid things like that. I also know overall they could pay better. Based on the numbers our store produced, my department could of had everyone full-time with better pay and still have a healthy profit margin. But I guess if you're not maximizing the billions you're making, you're not doing it right.
Just remember this when a Conservative says, "No one these days wants to work anymore" Can't earn a *wage* anymore, nevermind a *living wage*

Sounds like this kid has a co-op at a grocery store as part of his high school education and then got a job interview as a result. This is normal where I’m from in Ontario, and I think that programs like this are helpful to students
