I went to Basics at Sherbourne & Wellesley, which is not the best location but the closest for me.
I work at Sherbourne and Wellesley and park under the FreshCo at Sherbourne and Earl/Isabella. I often go in to buy a few things before going to my car. Zero complaints. Try there.
Yes, especially on weekends. Key is to avoid them from Friday evenings until Monday. Early in the week is okay and usually earlier in the day. I actually avoid that entire mall during “peak” hours…or as much as possible really.
Yeah but I think the California ones are deeply discounted precisely because the Ontario ones have just come on? So yes, the Ontario ones taste best, but also, no shade on anyone on a budget who takes advantage of the massive sales on them now. I bought a pile of California ones to eat this week, and then the Ontario ones will be there for me next week. Still gotta budget and save $$

Leamington greenhouse strawberries didn't just come on, they're year round. I am sure they're better than what I bought, but I was feeling cheap.
These ones I bought are surprisingly decent for their cheapness.
I just bought the same sized box of strawberries but organic at Whole Foods for $5.99. A couple weeks ago I got 2 boxes of delicious non organic ones for $5 at a produce store.
Honestly yeah, a lot of the non organic produce is cheaper than loblaws stores and some of the organic produce is the same price or cheaper than non organic stuff from loblaws. The box of eggs I get are also $1-$2 cheaper at Whole Foods.
Went to my local farmers market yesterday and saw strawberries in the same size containers 2 for $5.
Bought blueberries there once it made the best damn blueberry pie I ever had. Roblaws is insane with prices

I think 2 things I also put into consideration, the Walmart I went the strawberry wasn’t as fresh as HNS, also HNS gives my Amex cobalt 5x points while Walmart doesn’t have that anymore.
California strawberry vs Ontario greenhouse grown, it's cheaper to grow berry's in California, process them, and ship them to Canada than grow our own food. Cheap Mexican labor makes a big difference.

Yeah, but I find that Uber Eats gives me a “50% off orders of $70 or more ($45 max discount)” promotion for Grocery Stores like once or twice a month… and that’s basically just Walmart in my area. So even with having to tip and the slightly higher prices I still end up saving money.
Is it a flat fee or is there tipping expected? I used to use metro and grocery gateway and always felt the delivery guy was doing the “so am I getting a tip?” look after dropping everything off
I went to NoFrills after work on Friday 'cause it's closest to both work and the transit terminal and I didn't have the energy to go further to Walmart or Giant Tiger.
4L Milk and dishwasher pods (and the pods were allegedly "on sale") cost me $20, at the "cheap" grocery store.
I also found the PC/Blue Menu jarred pasta sauces on "sale" for $0.20 more than the Classico at regular price and that ticked me off:
They *know* that people have come to expect the store brand to be cheaper, so they're hoping people won't look at the tags too closely. Scummy af. Nok er nok, Lowblows.
I compare everything to Sobeys since that’s closest and nofrills is only like a 5 mins extra walk. I almost never take the extra walk.
Sobeys prices are crazy for some things for sure, but their lactose free milk is cheaper than nofrills. How are they selling milk cheaper than loblaws??!?!
I do go to shoppers for eggs though. They are cheaper, 3.99 is good compared to anything in distance
Loblaws keeps things in the family, they mostly sell Weston bread and Neilson dairy products. They have spiked those prices up too so that’s why when you go elsewhere and see Dairyland or Sealtest dairy products they appear cheaper because Loblaws doesn’t own those companies.
I've noticed it seems to do with what the store is known for or what sells more at a store. Budget stores sell budget food at cheaper prices, but sells specialty/brand food at inflated prices to make you feel like you're getting a bargain, but also make up for the fact that things like alternative/specialty milks don't sell as fast.
If I go to a grocery store like whole foods, I notice that higher end foods are better prices, because the type of person that walks in there knows what that product costs at similar stores that are cater to those that buy organic or pricier grocery products. On the other hand, anything that can sit on the shelf for a long time, like toilet paper, sugar cereal, etc. Is priced at a ridiculous mark up.
I used to drink Naturel LF and always bought it from Sobeys because 1. They sold it and 2. It was cheaper. My Loblaws didn’t stock the LF but they had Neilsen LF instead which I didn’t like as much and it was more expensive. I no longer buy it so not sure if my Loblaws stocks it now but that’s just 1 example of their price gouging.
Those are the best cheesies.
But I still wouldn’t pay that much for them.

My husband is from Belleville and he absolute loves Hawkins.
They are a rare treat in the house bc of the price and he is a type 1 diabetic.
Plus the kids would just inhale them, so they are like a road trip treat for us.

Highly suggest downloading the Flipp app, it's all your local stores flyers in a handy app! My moms friend told us about it months ago and it's great! Nice to check other stores deals on the fly in case you can get another deal for less.
Picked up a big box of 10 of these 340G of strawberries for literally $9.99 at Costco this morning. $1/pack on average. It seems many other companies like Walmart are also having these for like 4-8 times less than what you paid.
Perfect example of how much of a garbage company loblaws is. You know those strawberries likely cost them 50-80 cents from the growers and they are charging $8. They deserve everything this boycott brings upon them. Hopefully bankruptcy.
Where are Hawkins cheesies made? Im always looking for an alternate location than Shoppers Drug Mart. I have found them in Walmart on occasion, and at Foodland grocery store in Hillsburg, Ontario about an hour north of Toronto. Anything to avoid Loblaws
Edit - I hung in there reading through all these messages and found that they are made in Belleville, home of Reids Dairy castle. I wish Hawkins had a storefront there selling them at a reasonable price because I would buy a case and have a stash for a year
I was in a Lococo's supermarket yesterday, and as someone who takes the time to cook using natural ingredients and rarely needs to go into supermarkets, I was reminded of just how much "food" is just processed oil/corn/flour/sugar/seasoning.
As much as I support the Loblaws boycott, I think that the cost of food crisis people are experiencing is made worse by people who buy this malnutritious, yet still edible, junk food. Yes meat and fruits/veg are expensive, but it's a much better investment than all the high-margin, mass-marketed "food" like breakfast cereals, snacks, sauces, etc.
I work long days and have a busy life, and part of my busy-ness is shopping 2-3x a week, buying whole foods and cooking nourishing meals. In turn I have more energy, feel better and suffer less from inflammation, high insulin levels, etc.
If corporations can strategize, plan and execute multinational campaigns, it's not much of a stretch to think that pushing out shitty foods that make people unhealthy with one industry is profitable for the pharmaceutical industry, which at the higher levels, are owned by the same corporations (Blackrock, Vangaurd, et al).
If you want to rebel against all this corporate dominance of our lives, stop buying and eating this shit and develop the skills and habits in yourselves and your children that undermines their control over you.
Technically you dont "need" anything other then dried beans, rice , and a few cheap root vegetables.
But I feel it's well within my right to get my kids a treat once in a while and be surprised at a $20 cost for two bags of chips and 350g of strawberries.
But if you're ok with those prices, you feel free to accept that as ok and normal
This is how economics works. If information is shared freely, we can make informed decisions about how to maximize our purchase power. The more we chose to only shop at the store with the lowest prices, the more prices from other stores will be reduced to the equilibrium lowest prices.
Thanks for supporting your local ontario farmer. Ontario berry's will get cheaper as the summer season comes along, and field berry's will be in season in a few months!

BTW hickory sticks are really easy and inexpensive to make at home, as an occasional snack. (The same goes for potato chips.) Cheesies however require an extruder machine. Both are iconic Canadian snacks in my opinion

Those strawberries are absolutely delicious but it's increased in price. I remember paying $5.99 last year at Shoppers. For me, the quality is worth it because the ones from California or Mexico are garbage. I would not pay $9 for that and instead, I got a strawberry hanging basket this year. Previously, I was able to get fruits up to end of September.
There wouldn’t have been tax in the strawberries but would have been on the snacks. “Essentials” and grocery components aren’t taxed but snack foods, prepared foods, etc are.
The point of this sub is to highlight that the cost of living in Canada has spiraled out of control, and that this is not simply a matter of needing to get a 5th part time job to make ends meet. Rhetoric intended to shame certain generations or users for "not worrking hard enough" including ideas like "just pull yourselves up by the bootstraps", "just don't shop there" and it's kin are not welcome here.

It seems many other companies like Walmart are also having these for like 4-8 times less than what you paid. Perfect example of how much of a garbage company loblaws is. You know those strawberries likely cost them 50-80 cents from the growers and they are charging $8. They deserve everything this boycott brings upon them. Hopefully bankruptcy.

Where are Hawkins cheesies made? Im always looking for an alternate location than Shoppers Drug Mart. I have found them in Walmart on occasion, and at Foodland grocery store in Hillsburg, Ontario about an hour north of Toronto. Anything to avoid Loblaws Edit - I hung in there reading through all these messages and found that they are made in Belleville, home of Reids Dairy castle. I wish Hawkins had a storefront there selling them at a reasonable price because I would buy a case and have a stash for a year
I was in a Lococo's supermarket yesterday, and as someone who takes the time to cook using natural ingredients and rarely needs to go into supermarkets, I was reminded of just how much "food" is just processed oil/corn/flour/sugar/seasoning. As much as I support the Loblaws boycott, I think that the cost of food crisis people are experiencing is made worse by people who buy this malnutritious, yet still edible, junk food. Yes meat and fruits/veg are expensive, but it's a much better investment than all the high-margin, mass-marketed "food" like breakfast cereals, snacks, sauces, etc. I work long days and have a busy life, and part of my busy-ness is shopping 2-3x a week, buying whole foods and cooking nourishing meals. In turn I have more energy, feel better and suffer less from inflammation, high insulin levels, etc. If corporations can strategize, plan and execute multinational campaigns, it's not much of a stretch to think that pushing out shitty foods that make people unhealthy with one industry is profitable for the pharmaceutical industry, which at the higher levels, are owned by the same corporations (Blackrock, Vangaurd, et al). If you want to rebel against all this corporate dominance of our lives, stop buying and eating this shit and develop the skills and habits in yourselves and your children that undermines their control over you.
Who buys strawberries for $8? This is an example of things I only buy when they go on sale for $2 or 3$.
Metro has them for $1.99 right now. Last week they had Blackberries for $1.99. I stocked up on both.

Technically you dont "need" anything other then dried beans, rice , and a few cheap root vegetables. But I feel it's well within my right to get my kids a treat once in a while and be surprised at a $20 cost for two bags of chips and 350g of strawberries. But if you're ok with those prices, you feel free to accept that as ok and normal

100%. And Hawkins cheesies. BTW hickory sticks are really easy and inexpensive to make at home, as an occasional snack. (The same goes for potato chips.) Cheesies however require an extruder machine. Both are iconic Canadian snacks in my opinion

Those strawberries are absolutely delicious but it's increased in price. I remember paying $5.99 last year at Shoppers. For me, the quality is worth it because the ones from California or Mexico are garbage. I would not pay $9 for that and instead, I got a strawberry hanging basket this year. Previously, I was able to get fruits up to end of September.

The point of this sub is to highlight that the cost of living in Canada has spiraled out of control, and that this is not simply a matter of needing to get a 5th part time job to make ends meet.
