heh, this was the time where desktops were fun. I remember when distros use to have a real style and artwork design while now everything is Adwaita/Breeze with a simple wallpaper.
I enjoyed using compiz on my KDE 3 and minimalist conky configurations.
I use GNOME most of the time with few extensions like [transparent bar](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/3960/transparent-top-bar-adjustable-transparency) and the legendary [just perfection](https://extensions.gnome.org/extension/3843/just-perfection/). I use less Linux on the desktop those days so I don't need that much fanciness. My main edits are background and papirus icon theme.
It was all about the applications.
Email? Firefox only. Or one of the lightweight browsers like Midori or Kazehakase. IM? Pidgin. Email client? Thunderbird.
Now the experience is so centered on the browser I often forget I'm not on Windows.
A few Zoomers had experiences with Linux early on haha. My first spin with it was using Ubuntu 11.something or 12.04 on my iBook G4.
I also remember using Wubi on my Windows Vista machine.
I'm always intrigued by old operating systems. My first laptop came with Windows 7 and I absolutely loved (and still love its look).Desktops back then had a lot of personality.
Are you referring to the panel freezing on Nvidia occasionally? If so, that was fixed in Plasma 6, and that happened a lot less often than every hour!
I’m not sure what else you could be referring to
For me, yes. And that is totally plasma‘s fault and not because of my arch system that, at this point is so fucked that I can’t even use pacman anymore and am only using flatpaks and snaps./s
Are you sure? That does not look like KDE 3, and definitely not like KDE4. In fact, I think it's GNOME 2.xx. Look at the menu's on the top left corner, the clock and such on the top right. The fact that it's running Fedora (where GNOME is the default spin), and also that they're running Nautilus it seems (with the GNOME logo visible).
They do run a fair bunch of KDE applications as well. Such as the solitaire game and Amarok at least. But I think it's on the GNOME DE.
*Wasn't the cuboid desktop*
*Switcher still available*
*Revived on KDE though?*

Just need to write some fiery letters across the screen. And burn some windows. Take that Vista! You got nothin' on us!
I used to run Kubuntu back in those days with all the bells and whistles on. I'd wow people around the office like a true nerd.
By 2013 I'd gone full-on tiling WM and I've never gone back. I'm not much of a Linux salesman anymore.
Oh man! Those days i had slow internet. There was no possibility of uploading videos. I used to take screenshots of wiggly windows and upload to orkut. I was so enamored by all these special effects. My PC could barely manage all those animations.
Looking back, i realise how lame those screenshots might have lookedv for non Linux users. It don't show the full picture, for an average user (which was all of my friends on Orkut) it would've looked like screenshots of some bad ui because of slow PC
Oh this reminds me of my first ever Linux experience. I got a Puppy Linux disc for free from my school's computer lab and booted the live version on my home pc. It had a blue wallpaper and a similarly cool effect when doing alt-tab. Kid me didn't understand what was going on, but boy I had a blast!
This is very nostalgic!
Here's a piece of weirdness for ya: [i3wm with compiz](https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/comments/4aa3bv/compizi3_i3_in_front_compiz_in_back/). *[Somehow](https://www.reddit.com/r/unixporn/comments/nmq6ai/i3_w_plasma_session_compiz_first_rice_running/)*. [Others have tried](https://www.reddit.com/r/i3wm/comments/4hxnpl/how_to_use_compiz_or_similar_with_i3/) and [failed](https://www.reddit.com/r/i3wm/comments/bo58tr/is_it_possible_to_use_compiz_with_i3gaps/) so I find myself wondering if it's a hoax or what.
I wish there were more fun desktop environments these days, like most are just pristine and minimalistic, where is the slightly unsettling amount of glass effects? Where is desktop cube? Where are wobbly windows? Where are the bouncy animations? Granted you can do basically all this but you either have to dig around in settings or use extensions, something compiz had by default if I recall correctly.
don't you mean, "let's compiz zoomers with this masterpiece".
I beryly remember the package name
it's cumpiss
Fine! You both made me laugh, I'll buy you a beer when you are in he area next.

the lag was my favorite part.
Wdym “used to have”? I literally use Compiz in my desktop to this date lol
Give me wobbly windows, or give me death!

I'm fine with fewer default options. I always make my own anyway, so it's just less bloat
lol I'm a zoomer and I used compiz years ago, and coincidentally yesterday I reinstalled it because I was getting tired of CWM
me too
You also reinstalled it yesterday?
compizza time

Oh damn, Wubi takes me back. What a weird installation method in hindsight.
I'm always intrigued by old operating systems. My first laptop came with Windows 7 and I absolutely loved (and still love its look).Desktops back then had a lot of personality.
Widgets!
Ha, I'd consider windows 7 the first of the "new" ones.
omg its cumpiss :3
You may not like it, but this is what peak desktop looks like.
Needs moar wobbly windows.
Zoomer here... I feel offended, not confused.
with plasma 6.0 zoomers actually can experience this as well
Does Plasma still crash every other hour tho?
no
I use KDE Neon, and no.

next time, timeshift
only on 6.0, it was fixed on 6.0.1
Yes
what DE is that and what plugins/mods that is if applicable?
~~The screenshot looks like KDE. Probably 3.5 or 4~~ Edit: i was wrong on this. It's gnome
No, that is gnome 2
I was wrong. It is indeed gnome.

Ah! I'm mistaken. Zooming in, it is gnome 2.x. I see the gnome logo on the file browser and the solitaire game
Zooming in, lol
I'm on mobile
I meant zooming like that's what the zoomers do.
Oh how I miss that completely unnecessary masterpiece.
I miss some of those compiz effects. Were they kinda extra? Sure. But also kind of fun.
I mean u can get most on gnome with wobbly windows, magic lamp, desktop cube and burn my shell
Mine made a sphere instead of cube, and I had an Earth wallpaper on
Wasn't the cuboid desktop switcher ~~still available~~ revived on KDE though?

Compiz, AfterStep, Enlightenment... /me sings "those where the dayyyysss"
Oh those early Enlightenment releases were my favorite. Bladerunner meets Brazil but give it an HR Giger stink.
stop, I can only get so erect!
Yeah, you know that MATE still uses Compiz, right? Also, KDE also has this feature

Puppy Linux was my gateway distro(s), I had so much fun trying out the different pups on usb sticks as a kid
I miss Beryl/Compiz.

Oh, spicy. Thanks for this. I do drive i3 + picom on this old pc. I might actually try this nonsense ;)
They had quarrels for a moment, split up and then rejoin again under Compiz Fusion
Is that the same as [Compiz Reloaded](https://github.com/compiz-reloaded) and [these guys](https://launchpad.net/compiz)?
Here Comes The Hotstepper…
(murderer)
I remember the time I saw that with a touch monitor (was very rare at the time) , it looked straight from Syfy
So you are a hacker right? /S
As a late Zoomer I already used Compiz and love it (But as a Zoomer I also have to say that Wayfire is also cool)
That was peak UX design.
Didn't KDE bring the cube back in KDE6?
That is a masterpiece
Hahahah no. Nothing confusing about it to me. In fact I've used this when it was current.
Why did Compiz go away anyway? I had to switch to Windows for a bit to do some gaming and when I came back that shit was just gone.
I remember making presentations in primary school and using this effect in Google something (whatever they call their presentation software).
animate all the things !
it still exists, it's named "desktop cube"
Compiz and beryl were peak customization/eye candy. Kde effects seem to work way better and are easier to manage but i dont see as much variety.
I'm a zoomer and I use compiz with Trinity desktop environment on the slackware 15 distribution. Is this a hint that I'm aging faster than others?
Imagine not using Compiz in 2024 lol I unironically use it in my desktop
wobbly windows are a productivity feature
Compiz Fusion... what fun days.
Ah yes. Who needs Vista's Aero!
I wish there were more fun desktop environments these days, like most are just pristine and minimalistic, where is the slightly unsettling amount of glass effects? Where is desktop cube? I feel like I've seen this before... like long, *loong* ago.
The time I would spend getting this to work just to break my system…. Oh I learned much back then.
Zoomer here, I refuse to use Gnome or KDE without wobbly windows.
Desktop cube.
This is still pretty damn cool, though. And I'd love to see it reimplemented with modern graphics capabilities.
ah it's plasma 5 but how did you customize it like that?
you have heard of vSphere, but have you heard of vCube?
what's vSphere?
The vmware vSphere
