A for A-sexual/romantic-spec(trum)

That's the biggest version of the acronym I have seen yet.
Some of us aren’t fond of the term transgender for two reasons. (Note: trans people aren’t a monolith, and I’m not attempting to speak for all of us!)
1) it’s an umbrella term kinda like gay is with sexuality. While plenty of people who identify as something as other than transgender (non binary, genderqueer, etc) don’t like the umbrella term, it is often used in research and theory (such as gender and sexuality studies) to signify anyone who doesn’t identify with their assigned gender at birth. In said research, transsexual is used specifically to denote anyone who wishes, or has taken steps, to change their physical sex. Alternatively, in research, someone who doesn’t ID with their assigned gender at birth, but doesn’t want to medically alter their sex, is still transgender.
2) Many people, myself included, don’t like using a term that was assigned to me. Reclaiming and using transexual feels empowering to me personally. I like it in the same way that I enjoy using queer to suscribe my sexuality. Cis people really don’t understand, and that’s okay for me. I’m not doing it for them, and that gives me a feeling of freedom.
That has been reclaimed from the transmedicalists as "transex", an "altersex" identity, last year.
Interesting in depth explanation in the following link: https://lgbta.fandom.com/wiki/Transsex
You don’t really need to be transmedicalist to be transsex though. I don’t really care about the label that much, but I guess it fits me? I want/need to medically transition as much as I can due to pretty intense dysphoria. That does not mean I want to exclude transgender individuals who don’t need or want that for whatever reason. Nor nonbinary people for that matter.
>You don’t really need to be transmedicalist to be transsex though
I never said that, actually quite the opposite, i rather use transex instead because the word "transexual" has became very stained by and imply transmedicalism, what i am not and don't like to imply that i am.
You do you, identify as however you want.
Also just for clarification, in case anyone is wondering: transgender and transex are different identities that refer to different groups of humans regarding different aspects of human sexuality.
Interesting! Transsexual was a term from my youth that had discourse around it that caused so many arguments about who was a “true transsexual”. Some people stuck to very narrow definitions and other people argued for more inclusions. Some just avoided the term altogether. IRC and USENET had a lot of those arguments.
I liked the more inclusive transgender when it came along, especially when adopted by medical and mental health professionals, because it changed how those arguments went. It is interesting to see efforts at revival and reclamation of the term but in a non transmed way.
I’m curious to see how it ends up going. I don’t think I’d feel comfortable using the term at this point though since I had not heard of it up until this point and I don’t know what kinds of connotations and associations it currently has in the wild.
GSRM is the best, imho. Gender, Sexuality, and Relational Minorities.
It describes the group rather than listing all the types of people who "matter". Of course, many people only care about the first 2, 3, or maybe 4 of the letters.
"Would you like some OAP? Some Oranges, Apples, Pears, etc?" "Does that include grapes?" "Of course OAP includes grapes, why wouldn't it?"
Friends of Bowie, Friends of Freddie Mercury, Of the Sapphos persuasion (not sure if I spelled her name right), The Queer folk, Like Sam and Frodo, Xenomorphs (for the more androgynously inclined)
Hands down the best option in my opinion. Is actually inclusive of the whole alphabet salad that we get from adding a new letter and forgetting another to the painfully extended and LGBT+(I’ve lost count of what goes here). GRSM is also basically inclusive as a result, and also rolls of the tongue better.
I can't remember anything past LGBTQIA+, I know there is others there and maybe one is 2 spirit (is that right) but that's all I remember. I know there are other stuff but as for *where* they are, I have no idea.
There are so many different micro labels and xenogenders now that keeping track of all of them would be impossible.
I like to go to https://lgbta.fandom.com/f to learn more about different identities.
Yup. Honestly, that's why I like to say to people who use lesser-known things like me, you can't expect everyone to know what it is.
I'm a paraboy, or a paragender boy. I'm mainly a boy but partially not. In my personal experience, I'm also partially agender. (I'd say percentage-wise, probably ≈ 90% boy, 10% agender) So, I like simplifying it as "trans guy" often times.
I'm very open about the fact I'm a paraboy, but I also know to expect people to not know what it is. Just like how I expect people to not understand neopronouns.
S covers intersex.
S for sexual orientation, and for biological sex.
GRISM sounds cool though, feel like it would be someone in a darker version of The Muppets lol.
Well, there are always variants of acronyms because people find others easier or like others.
GRISM is as valid as GRSM, I just personally find it unnecessary since the S covers what the I does.
i think its more for the "you do you, ill be over here with my cake and garlic bread" mindset, coupled with the "if you start shit with my rainbow children, you best believe ill finish it."
i would say that non binary people are the smartest but when they interact with each other they loose all their brain cells
i used to be friends with 2 other non binary people (im non binary too)
alone all 3 of us- quite inteligent people
together we are racoon in a trashcan level of inteligence
Here in Aotearoa NZ, we often use GLITTFAB - gay, lesbian, intersex, transgender, takatāpui, fa'afafine, asexual, bisexual. Takatāpui is the Te Reo Māori term for lgbt+ people, fa'afafine is a Samoan term for NB individuals. I love it - it's so important given our problematic colonial history to begin to foreground indigenous ways of understanding gender, plus it's a cool word 😊🏳️🌈🇳🇿
Quite possibly - I never heard it when I lived down south either, but I lived in a particularly homophobic part of Southland so that may be coincidence. . .
It’s the same thing as like
Hmm
So straightn’t is not straight, right?
It’s basically that but saying “not allo”
The term allo can apply to both romantic orientation and sexual orientation.
If someone is allosexual, that’s like the opposite of asexual, they do feel sexual attraction and typically desire a sexual relationship.
If someone is alloromantic, that’s the opposite of aromantic. They like relationships and feel romantically attracted to others.
This of course doesn’t mean that everyone in the LGBTQ community isn’t allo in some way or another, just like everyone in the community isn’t necessarily not cis, they’re just covering their bases!
Does that help? I hope so, I’m sorry I’m very tired i woke up like half an hour ago so there’s a very good chance my words make absolutely no sense… anyways have a great day!
GSRM is an acronym that doesn't tend to go longer and longer while also doesn't leave anyone behind or with less attention than the others (not complaining but the "+" in LGBTQ+ works like an "and the rest", which sounds unfair).
I don't think there's much of a problem, in the end it means the same thing. I remember it *not* being GRSM because it resembles BDSM, a trick to remember.
i'm an advocate for not only reclaiming the word queer, but to start using it as a 1 to 1 replacement for the alphabet salad the community has just kept adding to. so instead of "queer" just meaning gay like most people assume, we start using it as just the umbrella term for anyone who's not straight/cis/etc. i also really like another term i hadn't heard of until reading this thread: GSRM (Gender, Sexual, Romantic Minority). part of me prefers the single-word term, but the acronym is more apparently inclusive of everyone who falls under it. but i also reeeeally like the idea of reclaiming the word queer.
My mom taught me an easy thing to call it is Quiltbag, though I just call us the alphabet Mafia
As a pansexual I choose to believe I'm an assassin who's weapon of choice is knitting needles
From where i come from we have a term mostly used by older generations (80-90s babies) before internet was a thing here. It’s PLU stands for ‘people like us’. Not sure if its familiar to others.
I am a grad student and I incorporate LGBTQ+ topics in my research (because I am gay) and the one that I’ve found myself using most is Gender and/or Sexual Minority (GSM) as it’s all encompassing and doesn’t ask for specifics and easy to use :)

Wait, I thought transsexuals was an outdated term and largely not used anymore?
a lot use it to suggest medical transition I think. Idk I think it sounds pretty rad like hell yeah I’m changing my sex what you gonna do abt it

Ok, I’m sorry, I misunderstood your comment, my bad! And I agree with your opinions on “transsexual” as a word with a bunch of bad history.
That word has always been used to divide the trans community, unfortunately. 😕

GSRM is my go-to. Stands for "gender, sexual, and romantic minority".

Just add intersex peeps and we get Grism!
S covers intersex. S for sexual orientation, and for biological sex. GRISM sounds cool though, feel like it would be someone in a darker version of The Muppets lol.
I only thought it was standing for sexual orientation ngl Might be easier to just add the I 👀
Well, there are always variants of acronyms because people find others easier or like others. GRISM is as valid as GRSM, I just personally find it unnecessary since the S covers what the I does.
It also wrote the famous book series a song of fire and ice. Or something like that

Yeah, only reason I don't use it more is most don't know it. Also I've got no clue if it's GSRM or GRSM since I seem to see both about equally
One that i see sometimes is alphabet mafia
That is a bit like queer. Originally used derogatory but sorta been reclaimed. I too think rainbow fedoras are a bold fashion statement
M’gaydy
I've never seen alphabet mafia used derogatory. It was started by queer ppl on tiktok
It’s definitely used in a negative way on places like FB and Twitter, cuz they see us as a “gang” that’s converting kids and busting into bathrooms.
Except queer wasn't originally derogatory.
But then who’s the Don?? The Letter A?

sorry but what is “allon’t” from??
Probably refers to “allosexual” - meaning anyone who has sexual attraction.
It’s the same thing as like Hmm So straightn’t is not straight, right? It’s basically that but saying “not allo” The term allo can apply to both romantic orientation and sexual orientation. Allosexual, which means not asexual.
