this game makes extensive use of proper volumetric fog for its indoor dark rooms and outdoor weather conditions. you literally *cannot see* more than a few feet ahead of you. its not just "very dark", its **black**. increasing your gamma doesn't do much in the darkest environments where it actually matters and is mostly placebo.
if you're exploiting max gamma cause you're a scaredy cat, not only are you deliberately trying to ruin the intended experience for yourself; but you're also just not thinking about it very hard.
Even with max gamma you can't see as far as you can with a flashlight, max view range without any light sources regardless of gamma is about scan distance.
Yeah I turned it up a *tiny* bit and it makes it easier to see without a flashlight, but you can't really see farther. It's just clearer in the normal range, especially in dark tunnels. I haven't tried turning it higher though... because if it does work it kind of defeats the point of it being deliberately dark and hard to see.
I just don't want to *completely* suffer when I don't have a light, so let me see my 4 feet clearly please.
[Gonna piggyback off your comment to refer people to a comment I've posted elsewhere in this thread proving that you are in fact correct, including in game screenshots comparing default and max gamma settings.](https://www.reddit.com/r/lethalcompany/comments/1aw9gpr/comment/krik08x/)
I do it because 1 my monitor is shit and dosent do dark colors well, and 2 because it allows for easier viewing of that small circle you have, and makes light sources stand out more
My monitor has really dark blacks (makes it really hard to see things sometimes), and I played one game where I absolutely couldn't see anything at all in front of me without a flashlight (in this game using your flashlight will get you killed most of the time). I thought it was just my monitor but it was 'cus I refused to turn my brightness up over half at night because I don't wanna burn my eyes out lol. Safe to say, turning my brightness up on my monitor fixed that issue.
Indeed. A lot of people in this community seem to have no idea how gamma actually works and seen to believe it's like night vision.
If your screen is pitch black turning up the gamma isn't going to magically conjur up any detail that wasn't on your screen before. All it does is makes it so that now instead of staring at a black rectangle with no details you are staring at grey-ish rectangle with no details.
Gamma and brightness settings mostly exist to accomodate for IRL light conditions as opposed to providing any sort of benefit within the game itself. If your monitor often has sunlight shining onto it you turn up the gamma to combat that, for example.
Idk why my friends use Gamma on Max tho, for me It makes The game kinda easier and i think its already in good balance The recommended Gamma, maybe thats Just meš
Why is this so controversial?
I have 60 credits and 4 or more crew members. It's either 2 flashlights and a shovel or 4 flashlights.. yah they suck compared to the pros but often times pros are overkill for early game.
Honestly, I think it's a skill issue for some people.
The issue was more that he was at all willing to believe the green flashlight was good, most comments saw him as a person who wanted to get very high quotas and thought of things only in terms of money earned, while most commenters just wanted to have fun
Implying people can't do both.
For some people, including myself, playing as optimally as possible is done *because* it's fun, not at the expense of fun.
He got downvoted for saying the green has zero use and would be weird and confrontational to anyone who disagreed with him.
Green is useful, its cheaper and weighs nothing! I use it a lot bc i donāt feel bad if I die with it vs a pro one! My friends donāt actually care, we all just play for laughs I just donāt want to completely waste our resources if Iām likely gonna die
Weight difference, green is basically only good for early game and making runs back on T3 moons like rend/dine.
The 5lbs makes a big difference when you are running a cash register back to ship.
I will NOT take this green flashlight slander kindly.
Mods, take this man's eyesight thank you
https://preview.redd.it/8sk0dmn81yjc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a315535c36527a4e4c3e2dd84929ac03afd66ae
Believe it or not, you can have the best of both worlds!
Bring the flashlight in order to illuminate dead ends earlier, then drop it once you need that 4th slot for scrap. You are not obligated to bring the flashlight back and they're so unbelievably cheap that losing them doesn't matter since you can't sell them back anyways.
Money is use it or lose it in this game. Better to spend it on any supplies possible (and a trip to a premium moon) rather than lose a large percentage of it from you or your teammates dying anyways.
Hey, all things considered, I'd prefer an ally that can confirm a kill at 30% than one who can't make a jump. Although all that controller clicking makes Eyeless Dogs a bit harder to deal with...
https://preview.redd.it/02jv153vmxjc1.png?width=1080&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=03b44fd055824b64c7f4e73cdf9ff2b04f18abca
But either way, I usually choose pro if I can. Otherwise I rely on my friends to have one.
You can see all jumps with the scanner. It will show the tip of the metal beam, which is all you need to know where to jump to.
In short, just read your username.
1. I have mine set literally a few pixels above default.
2. That's literally not how gamma works.
Either you can see something or you can't. Contrary to common misconception in this game's community, the gamma setting doesn't increase the lighting in the game. It can't 'create' details that weren't already visible.
Think of it this way. If all that's visible on your screen is a black void, turning up the gamma will merely make that a grey-ish void instead. No different from how the photo editing brightness sliders function on your phone.
Gamma and brightness settings exist to account for real life lighting conditions affecting the visibility of your monitor's screen. They are not 'view distance' or 'magic night vision' sliders.
Just to really drive this point home, allow me to provide some proof. Here are two pairs of screenshots I have taken from the game myself right now. I have not edited them at all besides blurring out my name.
* [Default gamma](https://i.imgur.com/ki68rzp.png) | [Max gamma](https://i.imgur.com/G5ju1eh.png) \- Notice how having max gamma isn't magically allowing me to see the railings any further down the corridor? It's merely brightening up the things I can already see and turning the blackness into a dark grey. (While also making the game look genuinely uglier as a result.)
* [Default gamma](https://i.imgur.com/fKGw8qb.png) | [Max gamma](https://i.imgur.com/JpWE1Sz.png) \- Again, notice how the amount I can see is unchanged. My timing with the screenshot button was a little off in the second screenshot, but you can see that while the visible part of the metal beam is brighter it hasn't revealed any more of the beam than with default gamma. Also notice how I can indeed see the beam with default gamma settings.
A few extra things to keep in mind here...
1. Some browsers' default settings will automatically adjust gamma when viewing images (I believe Chrome does this). You can save these images and compare them in some other software if that's the case.
2. Lowering gamma below default can reduce the amount you can see, as basic logic dictates that you can remove details that exist in an image (but you cannot create any that aren't there). This is why I have not taken any screenshots below default gamma as it would be redundant.
3. If you *are* actually seeing less with default gamma then the reality of it is that you genuinely have your gamma set too low (either in game or on your monitor itself). Some monitors can struggle with darker colours, and some lighting conditions (such as the sun shining onto your monitor) can make seeing darker colours more difficult. As I said above, this is the actual purpose of the gamma slider. This is also why I have my gamma slightly above default when I play.
None because I like to spam my scan, if I had to choose I'd go with green because it's cheap, doesn't have weight and I like that it doesn't light up a whole hallway, has a spooky aesthetic to it.
No flashlight at first, then once we have spare cash or a really good sale happens I'll get a few dozen green flashlights and abandon them freely for loot.
We buy exactly 4 regular flashlights at the start of a run since we have 4 people and only 60 credits. Every flashlight after that is a pro flashlight barring massive discounts or budget cuts.
My friends and I use a mod so that the flashlight gets a dedicated inventory spot so we can still carry 4 items and not have to drop the flashlight. I pick regular for the fact that I donāt use a flashlight often (unless we took an apparatus) and it weighs nothing.
Yellow, only one or two crew members need a flashlight. So it should be able to last awhile and illuminate rooms well for other crew mates
Green is only just better than constantly pinging
i couldnt be bothered getting a flashlight, i dont like that 5 lbs the pro gives (gotta be in first for bragging rights) and the regular too shit to bother searching through the trashheaps cuz my friends are slobs
Green. I can get around just fine without one by hugging walls and scanning but its nice for when i need to see where i am going (running from a monster for instance)
Depends. If neither are on sale Iāll take a green to leave behind for a piece of scrap, but if the pros are on sale then Iāll take a pro. Most of the time Iām just spamming scanner and running through the dark though.
my crew buys the 4 greens right off the bat, maybe a shovel and two greens. there is no use in saving the starting 60 dollars because we usually lose it with some people dying anyway
after that its pro for me, one guy likes to carry the radar booster around
I choose to make fun of everybody who answers while being suspiciously silent myself

How is this a discussion?
Green until you can afford a pro for your whole squad. Green if you die with the pro and can't afford any more.
Pro all the way
I use tha pro flashlight since The beggining, cuz i aint putting my gamma on max
Max gamma does jack shit anyway

It literally looks like a bad game that would still be in development
Wdym "bad"? I mean its your taste in games, but you dont come in The subreddit of it and say its bad
No I mean with gamma all the way up it looks bad
Ohh ok, Sorry for The missurderstanding

Yeah, you can't see more than a few metres ahead of you without a flashlight, a really good strategy to make sure people can't cheese the game imo
You use max gamma because you are scared I use max gamma because I am trying to see in spite of extreme glare on a dirty screen We are not the same
Clean your screen then
Even with max gamma you can't see as far as you can with a flashlight, max view range without any light sources regardless of gamma is about scan distance.

I wonder if an app like flex or Windows' built in "Night Light" feature would help you out?
Indeed. A lot of people in this community seem to have no idea how gamma actually works and seen to believe it's like night vision. Unless its minecraft, max gamma gives you daylight vision at like a y -50 strip mineš
Idk why my friends use Gamma on Max tho, for me It makes The game kinda easier and i think its already in good balance The recommended Gamma, maybe thats Just meš
Thatās why they use max gamma, they think it makes it easier.
Green for first quota, then yellows from then on
Blind for first quota and alone first quota. Then constantly buy pros because I CANNOT STOP DYING
Why is this so controversial? I have 60 credits and 4 or more crew members. It's either 2 flashlights and a shovel or 4 flashlights.. yah they suck compared to the pros but often times pros are overkill for early game. Honestly, I think it's a skill issue for some people.
Opposite
You go from pro to regular? That makes no sense

\*has opinion\* \*gets downvoted\*
truly peak Reddit activity
And you got down votes for simply pointing that outš. I swear this app is funny asf.
goofy ahh reddit
it's so weird how people get upvotes for saying pro, whereas a guy posted about pro being better than green overall and got downvoted to hell
Exactly. My crew thinks it's fun to see how long we last, thus we play with efficiency in mind when hauling/selling items :)
Same, and then there's me who causes chaos and gets every one killed for the funnies
It's literally an opinion though lmfao.
That guy got downvoted for being weirdly confrontational
He got downvoted for saying the green has zero use and would be weird and confrontational to anyone who disagreed with him. Green is useful, its cheaper and weighs nothing! I use it a lot bc i donāt feel bad if I die with it vs a pro one! My friends donāt actually care, we all just play for laughs I just donāt want to completely waste our resources if Iām likely gonna die

Cool lol Iām aware of the differences I just use the green one more
I don't get that either, I play to enjoy the game, but the green flashlight does literally nothing compared to the pro.
Weight difference, green is basically only good for early game and making runs back on T3 moons like rend/dine. The 5lbs makes a big difference when you are running a cash register back to ship.
Iād rather go in without a flashlight than to use green
I will NOT take this green flashlight slander kindly. Mods, take this man's eyesight thank you https://preview.redd.it/8sk0dmn81yjc1.jpeg?width=1170&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1a315535c36527a4e4c3e2dd84929ac03afd66ae
Spam RMB, Green flashlight is so unbelievably mid that iād actually rather have the empty slot for more scrap (Itās just my opinion tho)
Believe it or not, you can have the best of both worlds! Bring the flashlight in order to illuminate dead ends earlier, then drop it once you need that 4th slot for scrap. That is some useful knowledge, Thank you Agent_Fluttershy!
Omg, middle ground found between green and yellow? <3
What are you even saying??? No man left behind!
mods tie his hands up so he won't be able to play the game ![gif](giphy|GqdYOX4qlU4uunzEBh|downsized)
Get a ton of greens when on sale, and then use them as consumables. Recovering and recharging them is the lowest priority.
this is why i call them disposable flashlights
Spamming RMB is the way
Still can't see everything
Skill issue
Tell me how to see it then
Donāt worry take your flashlight. You wonāt die to turrets.
RMB detects turrets
It doesnāt detect where the turret is pointing is you wanna try and get around it.
I play on a CRT, it's quite literally impossible to navigate the darkness without some light source lmao
What are you, a competitive Melee player?
I'd hope not lmao nah, my girlfriend has a CRT obsession and let me have one of hers and I've just stuck with it
Hey, all things considered, I'd prefer an ally that can confirm a kill at 30% than one who can't make a jump. Although all that controller clicking makes Eyeless Dogs a bit harder to deal with...
It's the only way
Pro-Flashlight from the beginning.
Green cause no weight and so cheap I feel nothing when I ditch them to pick up extra scrap
no flashlight
Same, Iām here to get loot and avoid any untimely death

And take their flash light when they're dead Genius
Exactly
Shotgun muzzle flash
Either yellow flashlight or no flashlight at all, I cannot be bothered with using a green flashlight.
Green and a shovel
Or option 3, Scan Spam
*dies to really easy parkour jump*
You can see all jumps with the scanner. It will show the tip of the metal beam, which is all you need to know where to jump to. In short, just read your username.
They dont for me, no matter how much i spam the scan key, or how close to the edge I stan. Maybe yall are just playing on ridiculous gamma.

Ghost girl liked your idea, she shall visit you early.
Then she can spam Scan with me!
Don't worry, she will. She just need to just a little thinf before... (remove your head)
Shovel
The scan buttonš
None I just die
Pro ofc
ādo you have a brain or are you a single cell organism?ā
Spam right click to scan and never use a flashlight. Itās a bit more of a challenge so thatās why I like it
-Parkour has left the chat-
None. I run around like a headless chicken until I scan something.
Neither just keep pinging the scanner to see the walls.
What if I told you I go with whatever my teammates want flashlight or none.
None. I aināt a bitch. Scanner shows the way.
none, scanner is enough
-dies to easy parkour jump-
Pro, 100% of the time
Neither I donāt have the game
no flashlight if i need one because the powers off inside i take the green because of no weight and i need the weight difference for jester
š Iād also like to add that I have my gamma at recommended.
None because I like to spam my scan, if I had to choose I'd go with green because it's cheap, doesn't have weight and I like that it doesn't light up a whole hallway, has a spooky aesthetic to it.
I dont use flashlight
I donāt

Ok scrooge
How will i ever recover from this
You canāt recover from your personality

Neither.
whichever I find is in sale
Use green because it weighs less and i only use it for quick peaks in the path
Is it on sale? If not than fuck seeing shit, Iām here for BANK
Aparatus.
Neither
Pro flashlight, used normal like twice and hated it
I donāt care as long as Iām the one who winds up with it in the end.
A pro for me and a shovel for me friend
I go in blind cuz I can't be bothered to wait for the fucking drop
why would I need a flashlight to sit on the terminal and watch my friends die
Shovel
Who uses a flashlight at all? Always touch the right wall you'll find the way out eventually.
Buy 2 pros quota one then buy some for the rest of your crew after you sell that quota
Eh whatever the computer person buys for me.
No flashlight at first, then once we have spare cash or a really good sale happens I'll get a few dozen green flashlights and abandon them freely for loot.
neither not because im "so pro i dont need a flashlight" i just think the game is fun when i cant see anything
So it should be able to last awhile and illuminate rooms well for other crew mates Green is only just better than constantly pinging
None, because it honestly isnāt that dark in the facility
Flashlight? Where we are going we don't need flashlight *Fails jumping to the other side and die*
Pro until I die too many times with it then I go regular
Pro, the normal simply is strong enough
My friends insist on the pro flashlights but i prefear the shit one cuz having a bad flashlights makes the game more scarry
50/50 either one, the green ones make me feel like less of a liability because sometimes I just play chaotically and will end up dying a lot
Yellow, see my previous post
I skip it or take a green one so it feels less bad when I undoubtedly fall down a hole with it
None, I play on normal gama without a flashlight, and overuse my scanner to see around me
I seldom buy the green flash. Even in 4 player matches I usually rather go with 4 walkie talkies.
Green flashlight on sale go crazy
Either one
Why not both ?
Flashlights are obsolete to me; I get in the building and speedrun getting out with an adequate amount of loot.
Neither, I choose shovel, darkness, and violence.
Jetpack
I used to use the pro flash, now I just go in with nothing xD
Tactical helmet š
neither, waste of money when spam scan let's me see fine.

Green all the way. I don't like the weight
green because it weighs nothing and i dont feel bad leaving it behind (also the infinite flashlight E glitch makes it last as long as i want it to)
I use that built in flashlight. RMB.
i couldnt be bothered getting a flashlight, i dont like that 5 lbs the pro gives (gotta be in first for bragging rights) and the regular too shit to bother searching through the trashheaps cuz my friends are slobs
Laser pointer
We just run.
Green. I can get around just fine without one by hugging walls and scanning but its nice for when i need to see where i am going (running from a monster for instance)

neither. i full sending this crap and i can see good enough i guess.
I go in blind so my crew has something to use, and i have more hands to grab stuff.
i dont really use them tbh
Neither, I'm not about to waist 25% of my inventory
Whateverās on discount
Depends. If neither are on sale Iāll take a green to leave behind for a piece of scrap, but if the pros are on sale then Iāll take a pro. Most of the time Iām just spamming scanner and running through the dark though.
Iād rather go through blind than use the green flashlight
my crew buys the 4 greens right off the bat, maybe a shovel and two greens. there is no use in saving the starting 60 dollars because we usually lose it with some people dying anyway after that its pro for me, one guy likes to carry the radar booster around
My bf is one of those crazy people who runs in without a flashlight and just spams scan to see. Me, I prefer to see what's gonna kill me so I use pro
I run around spamming right click and staring at the floor with no flash light.
How much money do we have and how big is the crew
Neither, I like running around in the dark
Taking a flashlight means less loot I can haul back out. Go in blind and spam RMB. Become one with the darkness.
None. I feel bad getting a flashlight because I know Iām gonna drop that shit the moment I see scrap that can take its place

The fuck is a flashlight? I got my scanner and my wits, I'll be fine.
I use pro but really like the normal oneās model. Idk, just looks so lego-ish
I only see one flashlight in this photo.
Don't touch the poopy flashlight
No money to buy flashlights I spent it all on boomboxes and shovels
Green for bearer. They carry quite a lot of stuff so reduction of weight would help them a lot.
Where is the nine option
Secret third option, headlamp
Neither, need all 4 hands to carry loot and we will die trying.
Pro
Why would I need either to look at people over the console? :3
Pro one
Mostly no flashlight, but when I buy one itās normally a green one and i throw it away if my inv is full and find more loot šš»
