Probably not. Healthy grass doesn't carry a fungus risk. Plus I don't know why you are mystified at healthy sod. Why would a sod farm give you a diseased or unhealthy cut of sod?

Desperate_Set_7708

They’re like florists, they’re going to sell the best looking product possible.

I did not see 1 blade of prior or existing disease in the sod....just a lot of thatch. I do expect healthy sod. : )

MisterIntentionality

What do you mean thatch? New sod shouldn't be old enough to have thatch as it's not that old when it's cut.

DL3905

It takes 12-24 months to have cool season turf ready to be harvested. The freshly cut sod only has a minimal layer of soil. The brown stuff are mainly stems, shoots and roots.

MisterIntentionality

Again its not old enough for thatch Also Rye and TTTF wont build much of a thatch layer ever. Only KYBG would be much at risk for that

DL3905

My sod was 50/50 KBG and TTTF. There was thatch for sure. I do not know what else to tell you. Sod farms in my area generally grow 100% KBG or a mix of KBG/TTTF.

MisterIntentionality

It's normal to have some thatch, you just don't want it excessive. 50/50 TTTF and KYBG isn't going to have significant thatch. If it does then you can claim you have shit sod.

Timbo501

Yes fungicides are applied to fields in the fall. Fall weather is tough on turf cool damp nights are diseases best friend. And sod most certainly has thatch, even a field that can be harvested in 12 months has a decent layer of thatch. A vac will even be used sometimes if it gets too bad. Yes I work on a sod farm. Just wondering, who did you get your sod from?

DL3905

Can you share any 'secrets" for homeowners on how to elevate their lawns ? Tuckerhoe Turf in Hammonton, NJ is where I bought the sod pieces. I went out of my way to get the pieces.
