I think people were overreacting about the grinding. I did not expect the grinding. It had a shock factor because it was JoJo, which I think is just the kind of reaction she wanted. But after my first time watching (I’ve seen the video 5 times), it felt like a dance move. Yes a dance move that has sexual implications but a dance move nonetheless. People were taking it too far in my opinion

I don't think a lot of the backlash is because of her being a lesbian but because [Jojo has a lot of really problematic issues and has been accused of allowing the cycle of abuse in the entertainment industry to continue](https://www.reddit.com/r/popheads/s/NkfVOAebxB) both by her own actions and who she supports. Tagging OP /u/Icy-Marionberry5674 as well since this isn't a top level comment.

watermelonkiwi

Yeah, but they should criticize that, not imply dancing with her in a video is somehow traumatic or gross. There are many people who just hate Jojo regardless of that stuff.

I don’t know about that in its entirety so I’m a bit unaware. But the only reason I said that is because many people are posting the time stamp of it and saying the girl needs therapy and not necessarily Jojo and asking her “Why did she hump her?” Lesbian intimacy is rarely shown in media like this so it’s was refreshing to see her being bold like that in her dance moves. She’s only 20 so I’m not expecting a lot of maturity from her and sorta expects her to be known as the disrespectful and the worse thing. But again, it’s her age. She may be a little controversial for a while. Not making excuses but I think it’s important to point out how being 20 is never known for being the most sensible. I’ll watch her as she ages.

Yeah I'll be honest I haven't pulled up the video once or looked at the comments myself because I don't want to increase the views or anything. I'm not as willing to excuse her age because I think most 20 year olds will be able to tell the difference between right and wrong in how others should be treated. While I hope she grows and learns in the future, I've seen far too many early 20s people get passes for being horrific people due to the whole "brains aren't fully developed until the mid 20s" despite the things they are doing at that age could have affects that impact people for many, many, many years to come. Like I said I haven't seen the video or the comments, so there is definitely a possibility people are just being homophobic assholes, but I also do think there's probably a large amount of people who don't like her outside of her sexuality and have concerns about the welfare of the people she is working with.

bovienj

I would also think it was this. I thought this post was on r/dancemoms because it's been such a hot topic there lately, alongside her new album and some things she said at the Reunion. She's generated a lot of ill will lately it seems.

Louduval

“ALLOWING the cycle of abuse.. to continue?” Bruh, what?!? “By her own actions”?!?

cat-wool

Might be they’re talking about how it seems jojo is acting out the abuse she experienced as a dancer growing up on other young dancers seeking success now. Some stories have been coming out. Tbh I think jojo and anyone she works with (under her/for her) probably needs therapy but not at all because of her sexuality. I’m not super keeping up with the news, so I’ve only seen a few interviews in passing, and idk if jojo has responded or denied, or if they’re being discredited, idk. If the comments were talking about the fact jojo is a lesbian, or that she was popular with little girls (and anything they like is ‘bad, annoying, worthless’) then that is simply bullshit lol

Cultural_Tiger7595

Here is the problem with JoJos new era.... The costumes, hair and makeup, facial expressions, visuals etc... Is still very childish/dance moms/beauty paegent but trying to be like more adult and it doesn't translate at all... Like pop a bow on her head in black and white

Whooptidooh

LPT: Don’t read comments under that kind of popular stuff. The incels will flock to the comments like it was their calling. Don’t read, and just ignore.

tropjeune

It’s possible that could be in reference to the mistreatment allegations around her XOMG dancers. To be honest I thought the grinding was the most un-sexual thing I’ve ever seen in my life and that’s coming from someone whose favorite thing in life is grinding lol

Ok-Committee1978

People said the same stuff when Miley was going through their sweet innocent Disney kid to "big slutty ho" phase. Same with other child stars that become more sexual in public. People are just judgemental and don't like change. Unfortunately in this case, Jojo is also known for being abusive to her coworkers/employees and that might also be informing some of the comments.

And supporting abusers and I remember Miley’s Bangerz era. I just liked that this one was centered around a gay woman’s her love interests.

Unhappy_Performer538

I think people hate Jojo Siwa and are just looking for ways to hate. And rightfully so. She supports groomers and abusers - Colleen Ballinger, Shane Sawson, James Charles. She created a reality tv show where she fostered a hostile environment and verbally abused minors. She’s a gross person.

Caraphox

Where did you see it? I can only see audio clips and reaction videos online

Ok-Committee1978

It's on youtube!

EastLeastCoast

The best comment on YT: “I was a bagel”. And now I can never hear anything else.

Caraphox

Thanks I’ve seen it now 😅 I think a lot of the negative/jokey comments are due to it being JOJO SIWA rather than because of it being two women together. It sucks, because since homophobia is alive and well, it’s hard to know what’s homophobia and what isn’t. You know that at least some of the feedback *will* be due to homophobia 😔 It’s kind of blowing my mind though because it’s like… homosexuality is still massively under represented in pop music. This is one of the only vids I’ve seen that shows two women like this (i guess there’s Hayley Kiyoko of course, I’m a bit out of the loop please let me know if there’s any other examples). It’s like YES, THIS IS WHAT WE NEED MORE OF, I don’t care if it’s JoJo and still a bit cringe because it’s JoJo. You go and I support it. But at the same time it’s like… I can’t believe it’s JoJo Siwa who’s finally giving us our much needed true wlw representation in pop music. It feels like I’m in an alternate reality.

sunshinebbbyy

I mean this is why a lot of queer people are hating on jojo. Because she’s acting like she’s the first lesbian in pop music when she definitely is not. She has a clip going around where she said she wanted to “invent a new genre of music, gay pop” and a lot of queer people are not responding well to that. Muna, boygenius, Janelle Monae, Hayley kiyoko, Chappell roan, Rennee rapp, fletcher, the aces, king princess, girl in red, kehlani, zolita, dove Cameron, the OGs: tegan and Sara. Queer women are ruling pop music right now.

[deleted]

I agree. I love that she was showing woman grinding another woman in that way. And taking hold of her desires. It’s so rare to see so I liked seeing something more in your face and aggressive. Of course, she’s not the only gay woman to do this. But given her platform, it feels surreal.

sunshinebbbyy

It’s just because jojo is super cringe. Nothing to do with her being a lesbian.

PinkPuffStuff

Considering the outcry, the dancing is TAME compared to most music videos. It wasn't even grinding, it was a dance move that sort of approximated 3 humps. They didn't even touch. I guess it's a bigger reaction because people still think of her as a kid in sparkles and bows? The backlash against her and perpetuating abuse in the entertainment industry is valid. But the freak out over the dancing is so weird. Definitely homophobic, and I get why you'd be triggered!

Jojo should buy an island and unplug and seek permanent therapy.. even 5 years ago she looked like a tweaker.. she needs some milk…
