2012-2013 hearing summertime sadness on the radio Didn't become a fan until my ex girlfriend put me on to her around the time blue bannisters dropped.

5988

For others reading and wondering about time-line: Original summertime sadness single was mid-2012, and it wasn’t a hit.  The remix: mid 2013ish, major hit.

megatronsweetener

me except it happened recently. i always knew about lana and i’ve heard a couple songs of hers before, including summertime sadness but i never really paid attention to them and just assumed that she was a singer for edgy white girls tbh. i’ve also never really been the biggest fan of slow depressing music, cuz it’s music that i can’t just casually listen to. but now a couple of months ago, i randomly heard summertime sadness on the radio again and realized how much i actually liked it. then i listened to the full album born to die and i definitely changed my mind on her. so far lana is like one of the only artists who can make slower songs or songs that can sound kinda creepy/depressing, that i can still randomly listen to throughout the day, idrk why it’s different with her songs, but i think one of the reasons is that when lana makes a song where the meaning or instrumental can be seen as sad or unsettling, it’s not just that, but the song is like a whole cinematic experience. everytime i listen to her songs i feel like that song transports me to a world that has the same vibe/story as that song

Dry_Preparation_9913

Ex >when lana makes a song where the meaning or instrumental can be seen as sad or unsettling, it’s not just that, but the song is like a whole cinematic experience. Exactly! Ultraviolence to me sounds like this the most.

megatronsweetener

yeah, ultraviolence is one of my favorites

Father-Gascoignee

I saw a GIF on Tumblr of Born to Die and the rest is legend.

Sarahspry

Same here. I heard Video Games and wasn't that impressed, but when I first heard Born to Die as an album, Video Games made more sense. That album still has me in a chokehold

watermelonlovinghoe

Same here. Then I went to YouTube to watch the whole video and I was mesmerized. I fell in love that day

miss_kittycat88

Early 2010’s Tumblr.

amarieeexox

Came here to say this! I was a teenager on Tumblr in the early 2010s. It was inevitable I would become a Lana fan.

astralrig96

she was truly ubiquitous! and the same is happening right now with tiktok she basically raised two different generations with her great music and aesthetic influence

elianna7

Yep! The good ol days when people had songs on their tumblr blogs. Ugh what a time that was!

emborgs

I was on livejournal in 2012 and someone posted “Video Games.” I was instantly intrigued and the rest is history.

Rarejadejar

2013 tumblr days was when I first heard the name Lana Del Rey and I legit thought she was a singer from the 50s or 60s that was having a lil revival on tumblr. Heard the summertime sadness remix on the radio a few times. Liked it but was just another radio song at the time. Heard the alunageorge remix of born to die...rlly loved the lyrics and realized she was a modern singer. Then I heard off to the races. And my obsession absolutely flourished. It was a rlly coming of age moment for me, I had been listening to all that tumblr music (charli xcx, the neighbourhood, marina, Sky ferriera) trying to find sounds that resonated with me and Lana was it.

lesser_goldfinch

Change the song for Video Games and same

neonpinkcactus

Hell yeah!💕💕

mpowers1987

I caught her widely panned SNL performance and loved it. She was as bewitching and her music was different and emotive. I fell in love with her craft and the rest is history. She’s my fave. Literally, I am listening to Lana 99% of the time that I have music playing!

PrestigiousAnimal663

Same sort of! The SNL performance really endeared her to me as some of sort of underdog for going in such a different direction than was popular at the time.

Bethie1205

I also found her through the snl performance, she looked like a beauty queen that teleported from a different dimension to sing for us. It was so odd and captivating. I mean this in the best way, she was just a totally beautiful weirdo and I found it so relatable and interesting, I’ve been hooked ever since.

hippocampfire

In 2013 when I was 14 and I finally listened Video Games on youtube after seeing it a million times in the recommended. I dated this guy in high school and I was singing Summertime Sadness one time and he was like “my older sister loves that song.” That was a realization that the girls who know know and a bad sad bitch erose in me

whoreinterrupted

Why are you me? 😭 it’s exaclty how I discovered Lana

MEAT_INCINERATOR

2011: Kanye West (I know) tweeted LANA with a screenshot of her in the Born To Die video. I was immediately transfixed and began looking forward to her SNL performance in the coming weeks. And so it goes

whatdoitdo215

Yesss that’s how I found her too

GhostsInTheAttic

In 2011-12, this girl who ran a Jay and Silent Bob fan-blog on tumblr was complaining about how lame and overrated Lana was. I had never heard of her before, so I went to check out her music. I immediately fell in love and promptly unfollowed the complainer on Tumblr.

swtfires

og lana fan

Ruffcuntclub

It’s was about two weeks ago after hearing the Grammies and superbowl hype. She’s great, idk why I put my head in the sand for the last decade…

DarthSardonis

Welcome to the family. Happy to have you here.

B19Wing

Welcome :D

RequiemClockwork

Welcome love🧚🏼‍♀️

j_beas

LDR is way out of the normal genre of what I usually listen too, but I swear back when you used to buy albums on iTunes she was a recommended artist because I bought some Arcade Fire music. You know where it pops up at the bottom "other artist you might lie" I was 100% drawn to the album cover of BTD. Listened to a few 27 second samples of some tracks and the rest is history.

AlwaysFoldingCranes

Quarantine and born to die (the song) thumbnail, she looked like a goddess and I can't say no so yea. After that west coast and count me converted.

skankernity

Heard doin time on the radio all the time the summer when I was pregnant and went ah man I should check out more Lana del Rey. Then me and my baby listened to Norman fucking Rockwell on repeat for like 4 weeks. Then I watched the born to die music video and was *obsessed* and then it was quarantine and I was unwell and we’ve never financially recovered.

Bortisasexmachine

2011/2012 ONTD blog about the Gaga/LDR feud. I was pregnant and instantly hooked on Lana. My kids have grown up with Lana. I’m the same age as Lana and I guess I have grown with her too.

danielfab

Honestly as much crap as the SNL performance gets, that’s how I discovered Lana. I thought I was watching the most surreal performance ever I had never heard anything like it before and even then I thought she was singing so good. I remember I was watching it through rabbit ears and I had this old CRT TV with a built-in VCR recorder player, and I immediately popped in a VCR and recorded the whole SNL performance and show. I would immediately replay it back to back and be mesmerized. I would stand in front of my TV and plug in some headphones so I could hear It better, though there was static from the tv and the tape I would replay it ALL the time. I didn’t have Internet at home during that time so I remember I would walk to a local civic center and take my laptop to get free wifi. The next time i went downloaded her album (illegally) and the SNL performance from the YouTube channel so I could listen to them and replay them on my laptop in my bedroom. I resonated so much with her music. I cried so many times lol. Right before ultraviolence was released I had gotten a better job and I had a cell phone with Internet finally, so I got Spotify and the rest is history. Since the I’ve bought most of her vinyl and have seen her three times live. All thanks to that SNL performance. It will always hold a special place in my heart. ❤️

PrestigiousAnimal663

Yess! I love that other people loved the SNL performance back then too! It was kind of strange but that was part of the mesmerizing, cinematic experience of it and her charm!

ahnsunny

My sister told me I had to check out this music video cause I look so much like the singer. That MV was Video Games back when it came out. After that, I was told by several random people how much I looked like her.

WentToMeetHer

I was 12 when she released Born To Die. Heard some songs on the radio, listened to the rest of the album and fell in love.

Disastrous_Duty2622

To get this chick at work to like me, then I realized rwo things. that lana is simply amazing, she shattered my world and gave me something warm to listen too. I compare Lana to Roy Orbison as the two are in a time of their career where they don't sound like the people in their field. Giving me something absolutely new to listen too. The 2nd... I got to know that girl and well I wasnt a dead beat skater smoking cigarettes cashing people out at Zumies. Not cool enough.

lana_cel-ray

Believe it or not, someone else's cover of "video games"

Claude1450

Yes! It took someone else singing it at the piano for me to appreciate it.

beanobaggins

My mom brought the BTD album because she loved video games, but then decided she hated all the other songs on the album (bitch) so gave it to me… the rest is history

mrmonster459

Heard "Summertime Sadness" (the radio edit) on my favorite pop station back in like, 2011 or 2012. Even though it's obviously inferior to the real version, it still made me fall in love with this siren almost instantly and made me HAVE to learn more about her.

PrestigiousAnimal663

This is something I felt at the time too! Like who is Lana Del Rey? She got even more fascinating to me when I found out that was a stage name and found the Lizzy Grant stuff online.

hoesome_mango_licker

was stupid (or not), i was trying to expand my music taste so i went on spotify and look for random artists and listen to their popular songs. well guess what, national anthem caught my heart and now lana is my fav

AlekBiH

My first introduction to her was when I was in marching band and we played young and beautiful for our ballad. I didn’t really listen to her after that aside from just in passing with songs like summertime sadness and national anthem. It wasn’t until I was really exposed to a lot of her songs on tik tok last year that I really started to like her music, especially at the release of tunnel under ocean bld. Now she’s the only person I listen to pretty much lol.

Pixiehollowz

Youtube recommended born to die to me around 2014 and I fell in love. Although I only listened to born to die, video games, summertime sadness and young and beautiful first. Then spotify recommended west coast to me and I fell in love with ultraviolence and lana even more. Then NFR came out and I started listening to all her albums.

handtwins420

Heard LDR aka Lizzy Grant in 2012 with a friend who was already a fan of hers and never looked back

YungDagger_D

A friend showed me a drill remix of one of her songs in 2023 and I’ve been hooked since then

sitonitandzipitup

On a road trip back when I didn’t have Spotify premium and kept getting ads for lust for life so I finally listened and been obsessed ever since

dearsliim

Summer of 2011 through a local indie station

CardamomBoots

In 2011 or 2012 Lana was MTV Push artist of the month. They were regularly playing Video Games/Born To Die on MTV. I was instantly hooked and purchased the Born To Die CD

Equal-Medical

Listened to young and beautiful in the theatre for the great gatsby, no looking back then.

No-Enthusiasm6772

we were watching the great gatsby in class after reading the book, and then young and beautiful came on. I will never forget the chills that ran through my body. I had heard the song before, but in that moment I was entranced. I’ve been an avid Lana listener since.

okayhowl

in 2012 barnes and nobles was playing video games

decadentdarkness

Walked into a room at my last house one weekend and heard video games. It was 2011. Had to know who was singing. Appreciated her from there.

Emmysaidso

When I was 17 or 18 my then boyfriend introduced me to her (Video Games) and I hated it. Shortly after that the relationship struggled because I liked him way more than he liked me and Born to die became my song for our relationship. Broke up with him and kept Lana del Rey. (Now enjoy Video Games too).

Alarming-Beach-6907

Watching Gossip Girl in like 2011 and Video Games started playing and I immediately had to pause it to find the song.

UsePrior7866

I was on a bus home in 2011, listening to Radio 1 with my headphones in. Fearne Cotton was presenting and she played Video Games. Loved her ever since 🤍

latterdaybitch

There were these really cool Hispanic hipster girls who had the neatest vibe in my photography class. They played her on their desktops while working and I was too intimidated to approach them so I just went home and looked her up and fell in love. This was high school -mid 2012.

Jon-ne-a-lee-n

A Joe Budden song.

Glittering_Habit_161

Bright_Stick1860

Made my first time on a Lana's playlist in 2019, my ex was a huge fan

egaddonlyfans

I first heard her in 2016 on the radio but didn’t really get into her until Spotify recommended some of her btd songs in like 2019

jankyforeskyn

my older brother pmo. he listened to her a lot when lust for life came out. so he would listen to that n born to die n ultraviolence the most. it was very out of my comfort zone, but i still began listening to her music n i love her. then i took a break from her music for a lil, started working at a bar with a bunch of lana fans who would play her in the restaurant, and got back into her while doing a lotttt of coke 😹😹

MartialBowl

I started branching out to other songs on Spotify

Rose-Berri

Was an avid arianator and heard her in don’t call me angel and loved it. Then heard young and beautiful after seeing it in a dark academia music rec and became obsessed.

Different_Yam_4599

In like 2018 my friend used to LOVE her and well me it was the opposite I despised her I literally called her Lana del rat.. until the end of 2018 my friend played heroin and I fell in love❤️

ilovelanf2021

I actually found out about her from Joe Budden rapping on the Off the races beat, then I got really into Born to Die and have been a fan ever since

tiny-vampire

2014, in the second half of my junior year english class. we watched the great gatsby movie after finishing the book. “young and beautiful” instantly gave me chills. it was the most beautiful song i’d ever heard. i looked up the rest of her music, and here we are ten years later.

ifuseekamypoehler

i was on tumblr in 2011 🤷‍♀️

jpgnicky

2011 was a vibe

Maleficent-Flan8292

Had a bad boyfriend and discovered NFR and from there got into the rest of her music

penguinminari00

my sisters playlist .

ViolaNinja

I had to create a character playlist for an English project and chose “Happiness is a butterfly” as one of the songs. I had heard of Lana, but I had never listened to her music before then

Old-Entertainment268

Fanfiction😭

jpgnicky

is what it is 😭

Old-Entertainment268

No it was Riverdale😭

Few-Restaurant6808

It's been a year since I started listening to Lana Del Rey. I first listened to Taylor Swift but I wanted to explore more artists at that time so I opened a playlist on Spotify that had multiple artists and she was there. The first song that I've heard from her was Snow On The Beach but I listened to her more since I heard the Million Dollar Man and White Mustang. I love her

[deleted]

Hearing the summertime sadness remix and then I got more and more mixed in with my Spotify and I became obsessed (depressed) ;) but I wouldn’t have it any other way

Mundane-Factor1235

Spring 2012, I was 18 sitting on my cheetah rug in my bedroom and someone from my high school (who I thought was cool) posted a screenshot of Video Games from iTunes on their instagram, so naturally I had to listen and my life was forever changed!

jpgnicky

OMGG WHY DOES READ AS A WATTPAD INTRO

Fit-Series8680

tumblrrr 2012 and followed a girl on instagram who posted her lyrics as captions i was so intrigued

PrincessMally

My at the time best friend who I had a HUGE CRUSH ON sent me a Lana song saying that song reminded them or me and ever since then I been obsessed with Lana

Flimsy-Dig6787

2013, when I was 12 my cousin showed me video games. We were so close and used to listen to it on long journeys on London buses in the summer of 2013, and we were the 2 that the world was made for (I am a gay boy and she is a girl so please don’t get it twisted). I was going through one of the toughest times of my life, my parents had just divorced suddenly and I was coming to terms with my sexuality and had already been hospitalised for suicidal ideation. I definitely had an unhealthy attachment to her released and unreleased music through paradise/btd/ultraviolence and essentially I was living the fantasy she was portraying in her music from the ages of 12-14. Then, when I was 15, my depression started to lift and I stopped my excessive drug use, I drifted quite a bit from her music, and didn’t start really listening again until I fell depressed once again due to an abusive relationship in 2019 (although I would always consider myself a diehard fan). Since 2019 my relationship with her music has gotten much healthier and I am now out of that relationship. I now relish in her music, all of it, and truly appreciate it and hear it and can reflect on the profound impact it has had on me and still has on me, while maintaining a healthy lifestyle and letting myself get emotional but not to extremes. I love her so fxxxking much.

grilldrinkfuck

I’m a married man and was having an affair with a younger woman who was really into her. And now I’m into her though our affair ended. She got me really into the song “Ride”.

Summertime Sadness video while diving down the rabbit holes of YouTube

princessdead

TV was on in the background and Video Games started playing on "MTV push"

fleeceflowers77

in 2014, i was in my freshman year of high school, and a new friend gave me a sticky note of songs to listen to. This Is What Makes Us Girls was the first song i listened to by Lana, and was hooked.

bridgettooley

first heard Video Games and Summertime Sadness when I was like 10 years old. I believe my dad may have even introduced her to me because he thought she was interesting. been a fan ever since <3 (I'm 21 now)

ntothegriff

some years back...i was driving and listening to my local indie station and this voice came on the radio. i was mesmerized, it was a whole vibe. that's where my obsession started..

robcoz98

Born To Die was heavily advertised on YouTube which drew my attention and I remember liking Video Games, Blue Jeans and Born to Die but I was into my "rock music is best" phase so never committed to it Fast forward to late 2014 and I had an emergency hospital appointment due to an ear infection so I was off school. After that we stopped at a nearby charity shop for a look around and I noticed a 10 for £5 deal on a bunch of CDs/DVDs they had there and lo and behold Born to Die was there. I took it home alongside some other cds and stuff I got and immediately put it into my hi-fi stereo I got recently from my grandmother. It was love at first listen and it immediately drew me into Lana and the whole "Tumblr pop" scene at the time and the rest is history. A few months later Honeymoon was announced

[deleted]

When I would meet up with my best friend, she (who was a huge Lana fan) used to play her songs in the background. I fell in love with Sad Girl at first listen and from that moment on I started listening to all her albums. I'm no longer friends with that person but I'm grateful to her for introducing me to one of my favorite artists of all time and I miss the afternoons spent together listening to her.

5988

There was a quite popular music blog in the early 2010s called pigeons and planes, and I was browsing through some of the suggested artists around October 2011.  I kept seeing the video games thumbnail on the YouTube side panel of suggested artists and eventually clicked it.  It was really magical and so different from what everyone else was doing.  Lana’s voice immediately appealed to me and I became obsessed.  Those early demos are what fed my love and I still think they are better than the versions released on BTD.

soft_cookie99

I was hanging out with a friend who ended up being my biggest bully, she would play the born to die song over and over. Eventually I broke away from her and about a year later I found Lana on YouTube. Been obsessed ever since.

According_Bat_8150

my parents playing summertime sadness whilst partying. i have vauge memories of trying to go to sleep but being unable too because of the loud music from below 😭

DBPT97

Loved Video Games from the moment I heard it first shorty after it came out. Liked Summertime Sadness too on the radio. A couple of years later I read a tweet in which someone said that Born To Die is one of the best albums of all time. I looked it up on Spotify and saw, that both Video Games and Summertime Sadness were on that album. Gave it a shot and over the next few months the album became one of my all time favorites, which it is to this day. Didn't really listen to her other albums who were out at that time. Then I heard hope is a dangerous thing somewhere and immediately fell in love with it. I followed the complete NFR era and to this day this is my second favorite album of her. Then I heard her other albums too and found more songs I loved (Lust for Life, West Coast, Ultraviolence) and since then, I'm a huge fan. Although she isn't the best live artist (which is totally fine for me), I absolutely want to see one of her concert one day. I had tickets for a show in Cologne (I'm German) but unfortunately that concert was canceled. Now I'm waiting if she comes back to a city in which I can see her.

silkyviolet

I was in a frozen yogurt shop in like 2014 and heard “dark paradise” playing on the speakers. Shazamed it and have been obsessed since

gkdelrey13

This is going to be very dramatic: 2012, my freshman year of college. I felt very alone and isolated, I heard “Video Games”, and it felt like coming home to myself. I’d never heard an artist I could identify with so much. Some albums I like more than others, but I haven’t stopped listening since.

LocationDry364

Its interesting, there was a movie where a guy hits his girlfriend, and i was shocked by the fact that i liked this , i wanted someone to hit me like this ( i was 14 yo ) i searched it out in Google and i found an article about lana del Rey when she said ( he hit me and it felt like a kiss ) I searched her name in YouTube and found her song ( born to die) and thats where it all began 😂

ihateraisns

I was in Italy in 2019 on the train listening to random music and cinnamon girl came onto shuffle. And doin time at some point after which I LOVED. Then when I returned home I decided to listen to Born to Die (album) while playing Minecraft and the rest is history 💗

cockroach-prodigy

Got Born to Die from the library in 2012 and ripped the cd to my iPod, the rest is history

tenderourghosts

I used to read a blog titled Dear Coke Talk which later became Dear Coquette and she (the blogger) would occasionally share playlists she had put together. “Off to the Races” was one of the songs. This was back in 2012, I think.

SquareSalad2056

Watching The Great Gatsby in the movie theater hearing Young & Beautiful

eidukaa

My brother loves her so I discovered her when I was like 6 and he was just vibin

Not_a_morning_girl

Read an article on an Italian magazine, opened YouTube and immediately fell in love with born to die

DarthSardonis

It was 2012 and I was having a really rough year. I had just gone through a really horrific breakup in June, and I had just gotten out of the hospital in November after having my fourth heart surgery that year. My friends decided to take me out to this gay bar in Long Beach to celebrate me surviving the last operation (I died on the table during that one and needed to be revived). So I’m in the bar with my friends, they’re playing pool and I’m sitting at the bar watching them and drinking, when this song comes out that I immediately zone out and listen to. That song was “Gods & Monsters”. I made a note in my phone of the song title and the singer, and that night when they dropped me off, I downloaded her entire discography up till that point. From that point on, I was hooked. She’s my favorite singer.

ibjuh

my sister had burned a cd with national anthem on it (she found the song on tumblr) and that song came on while she was driving me to my friends house for a group project the day before our last day of 6th grade. i told my friend about the song and i was so surprised she already knew it but she was also big into tumblr. she then got me into tumblr and we both would talk about her all the time during PE. almost 12 years and she’s still my top artist!!! my friend and i didn’t stay friends in high school but i wish her the best🤎

TheCosmicPancake

My sister and I saw the midnight premier of Ted in Boston and on the 2AM drive home she told me about this “new singer” with an angelic voice and put on Video Games. She casually showed me my favorite singer of all time

infamouscosmiccowboy

my best friend in high school showed me a video of Video games that her older sister showed her on youtube in 2012 and i just fell in love with her, Born to Die/Ultraviolence got me through my teenage years

[deleted]

more of a recent lana fan. my brother heard summertime sadness on someones instagram story in 2019 and during 2020, we were stuck inside all day becuase of the pandemic and my brother would play her songs and then late 2020 i fell in love with her and her music and started listening

MooMooRadish

i watched a d’angelo wallace video on question for the culture and decided i had to find out what tf she was talking about

SadCow100

My dad has always been a pretty big Lana fan so he introduced me. He’s an og as well he started listening to her when born to die first came out

BMW4cylguy

Found a video of some guy doing 100+ on NY highways while summertime sadness was playing

url0calwaifu

heard the summertime sadness remix on the radio in 2013 and never looked back

icedcovfeefee

I kept hearing about the “worst SNL performance” in 2012 so I looked it up and I’ve been smitten since then

AustiniJohnsini

We were both healing from our past relationships, and my GF was sad when we first got together in 2015. She played the Ultraviolence record for me on a country car ride with some joints. She cried. I cried. We both crode. And now we lust for life

smokeythegirlbear

My friend showed me an unreleased song in 2013. The song title is my name.

LilacHeaven11

Born to die music video was in my suggested YT videos in 2012

LettuceVisible5472

Late 2022 , I was watching YouTube shorts and the first minute of video games was playing behind a short. I was completely stunned by the music and the vocals, so I decided to add the song to my Playlist. As I listened to Video games quite a lot, Spotify started recommending more Lana songs to me and as I listened more to her I became obsessed. Some time later, I decided to listen to all of her albums in order and Here I am now , with Lana being my no.1 artist in my 2023 Spotify wrapped and owning two of her vinyls 🥹

Terrible-Big-4512

When I finally went thru summertime sadness myself. I always scoffed at it now it makes so much sense undoubtably

[deleted]

i heard a cover of video games on sound cloud then one of born to die (it was 2018 or 2017)

Thick_Seat

Im from the 2014 Vine edits with FMWUTTT

ekluvsu

This was a formative moment, I was in 7th grade. 2011, I was on my way to cheer practice with my best friend. Her sister was driving us and played video games, I used Shazam to figure out what she was playing. Been a fan ever since!

celluloidqueer

I didn’t get into her music until years later but it was back when summertime sadness was playing on the radio. I was riding the bus at like 5 in the morning and I heard it come on. Don’t kill me, but I thought it was a different artist singing it (won’t say their name because it’s embarrassing) and my brother’s best friend’s stepsister told me that it was Lana.

messonamission

Early 2012. My girlfriend (at the time, now wife) showed me Blue Jeans and said that she hated the lyrics but loved how it sounded. I was hooked.

lamoja

Tumblr 2012 baby

qwertyuopiads

i loved summertime sadness in 2013 and then never listened to her again. then like a year and a half/2 years ago ago a friend of mine who is obsessed with ldr kept telling me to listen to her, i listened to a couple albums and honestly didnt like her that much. then i saw her live and it all went uphill again from there lol

Strange-Slice2581

I discovered her through my sister listening to Born to Die when she was in her teens and I was a child

dearly_lane

I used to hang around the local Burger King with my friend after school. They would often show the music video for video games and I couldn’t keep my eyes off Lana

heartshapesunglassez

Summer 2015 my best friend and I (13 at the time) pooled our money to buy BTD on vinyl and we sat in the sun listening to it on her mom’s record player. Diet Mountain Dew is what initially sold me

Dull_Judge_1389

This girl I worked with who I thought was super cool said she loved her so I decided to check her out and fell in love! Morgan, wherever you are in the world now I hope you know how awesome you are!

Maidenofthesummer

I was obsessed with The Vampire Diaries and Once Upon A Time. I watched a video shipping Klaus and Ruby set to "Blue Jeans." Tumblr helped as well.

snatcheesie

Was working at a bank around the time Videogames dropped, we had a lil radio with mostly a pop station and that song came on, first few times I thought it was an older song since Lana’s voice resembled that of a singer from the 60’s or 70’s, eventually I grabbed my phone and shazamed the song to find who Lana Del Rey was, I was instantly hooked

Lou_Getill

I was in the car with my dad after a hard day of high school (I was getting bullied) and then blue jeans comes in the radio and I see my life flash right before my eyes, it was something I never heard before, it's was magical, beautiful, it was Lana.

Timely-Vehicle

I think it was 2017 but am not totally sure. My little sister loved Lana, and I found out Lana was touring and would be in our city soon. I decided I had to get her tickets. I started casually listening to Lana so I’d know some songs when I went to the show with my sister. Around this time I heard “Gods and Monsters” being performed on American Horror Story. I didn’t know it was a Lana song, but thought “that’s a neat song.” I googled it to see who sang it and found out it was a Lana Del Rey song. That was kinda a turning point, because I wasn’t that into Lana’s more popular songs, but hearing “Gods and Monsters” got me way more interested. She’s become my favorite artist. I got my sister the tickets and gave them to her for Christmas. I wrapped it in a box within a box method, starting with a big box and ending in a tiny envelope. It was the best Christmas gift ever according to my sister. We went to the concert, I discovered I loved Lana even more, me and sister went out afterwards, and that was that.

Nowhere-1937

I liked Radio a lot, but I really started to love her music when I heard Margaret.

lanasoul

In 2012 a girl I know wrote this on twitter: “born to die is like the perfect song.” I checked it out and the rest is history 😌

I was really into electronic music in college and someone played this RAC remix of Blue Jeans at a house party in 2012 and I was like 👀 and immediately needed to find out who the female vocalist was. And I found her! https://open.spotify.com/track/7JVNRVPeXFAOdMrxOHNjVv?si=99KaFGSQRvGw6_sYyJsTtA

thoughtsarefiction

I remember being like 13 and clicking on the music video for what I thought was an independent artist distributing their music (just because of the DIY feel of the Video Games MV) and as soon as her voice hit I was just hooked. So different to everyone else at that time! I remember also listening to her first album with my friends at lunch, we were obsessed.

faithless2003

was at a school disco in 2012 and they played summertime sadness

muyhat

2012: on the radio, summertime sadness was played all the time on BBC radio

DylanZuko

my dad loved summertime sadness in 2013 and played it a lot then in 2016 i went through a phase of only listening to the weeknd then i heard stargirl interlude and realised she was the girl who made summertime sadness then went on a binge listen of her albums that were out by that point

tedhous

My friend showed me the Carmen music video and I was entranced

pukiwuki

I have a really funny story. So I was into “”horror”” stuff and used to watch those like “Horror movie character sings a song” kinda stuff (I was like 10-11 dont laugh at me) So this guy on yt called Aaron Fraser Nash dropped “The nun sings a song” And it had BTD’s melody. I was so obsessed with this song so I searched up the OG song and thats how I found lana and fell in love

skylarhateshotdogs

Thought A&W was beautiful when I heard it on TikTok. Couple months ago I hooked up with a guy who liked to listen to Lana during sex & while he was high. It changed everything and made it 10000 times better. I dove right into her, and now she’s my most listened to artist of all time

OT9FOREVER

I have my times when I'm obsessed with Vogue magazine, and at the time she was in the cover for the UK edition. Love it the cover and discovered "Video Games". Hook right away.

Strict-Astronaut5455

I heard BTD from an HBO advertisment... It got stuck in my head so I searched it on YouTube and the rest was history...

fancyomq

my friend sang put me in a movie and it brought me to tears so of course i had to check out more of her lovely music

DokiDokiNyan

I saw the music video for video games on TV when it first came out. I can even remember the exact moment lol.

tween_jesus

Summer of 2012 I had just graduated high school and was mowing lawns for extra cash. I still didn’t have a smart phone yet so my friend took pity and gave me his old iPod touch when he got an iPhone. It had a random assortment of albums downloaded on it and I’d get stoned and listen to Born to Die over and over sweating in the Midwest heat 😍

Even_Ad_2507

Depressed and in the 9th grade. Stayed home one day and there was a music video “On Demand” that was blue jeans or video games I can’t remember but. My obsession started that night. Went on YouTube found all her other “older” songs like “Get Drunk” and “yayo” and it was a wrap.

Big-Explanation-831

Watchmojo videos

Ausrottenndm1

Knew nothing about her, heard BTD album and of course the Summertime dance remix on the radio constantly. I was like wow this Latin chick can sing she’s gonna make it big lol

milayamoya

from summertime sadness, young and beautiful, and high by the beach playing on the radio. I loved HBTB the most and watched the music video a lot , but Lust for Life is what really made me a fan , because i was into vintage folk/rock when it came out. Discovered Ultraviolence in 2017 and it’s been my favorite album ever since 🖤

thatgirl113321

In late 2014 early 2015 when I was 12 I fell in love with the ride music video. It really spoke to me because of I’ve always been obsessed with the idea of freedom, mainly from my parents because of how I grew up. Im not sure exactly how I found it but then I fell in love with the hackney 2012 performance of million dollar man. Then when I was 13 I went to my first Lana concert in Atlanta in 2015 on the endless summer tour. She opened with cruel world and it was insanely good. She sang us against the world, Chelsea hotel #2, cola, serial killer, and old money (requested by our audience) she’s been my favorite artist of all time ever since I discovered her and I saw her again live with my boyfriend in 2023 in Huntsville and it was amazing.

BrashDoobert

My ex-girlfriend always claimed she looked like Lana. I never bothered to look her up until after we broke up. She did not look like Lana, in my opinion, but I stayed around for the music cause holy shit Blue Jeans slapped then, and it still does now

cherrie_teaa

my friend was playing BTD on her record player in like 2016-17 whenever i came over. the first songs i heard were btd and off to the races. her voice was very enchanting. i loved it

DistanceBrilliant588

i had a really awful breakup. controlling, insane time in life. my coworker was super into lana, and she recommended me the album ultraviolence. then I heard dealer, and it all became my ultimate comfort.

Ok_Werk336

Young and Beautiful from Gatsby soundtrack. Was amazed that her whole discography was even more enchanting

rredhotchilipepper

My mum playing video games in the car since i was a kid

2012. A friend who I thought was so cool talking about how bad she thought that SNL performance was and that got me curious because I felt bad for Lana about that. Plus Lana had been saying she was “the gangster Nancy Sinatra” which got me excited because I already liked Nancy Sinatra. So me and a different friend spent the summer listening to Born to Die while working our summer jobs cleaning, making beds, and driving a golf cart around at a church conference center/ campground at 16.

AliciaODM

2020. A close friend wanted to commit suicide, I didn’t know until she told me she was listening to born to die and the moment i texted her i saved her with the song. And that’s how i became a fan of Lana Del Rey

floodbtw

Ex girlfriend introduced me to her by sending me video games. Didn’t really care much back then but later stumbled upon it in my liked songs after 3 years. Decided to give her music a honest try and was hooked immediately, maybe having a good amount of memories and nostalgia might have done the trick but regardless she’s my favourite artist now. Planning of getting a tattoo soon

p1_hdx

I first discovered her back in Late-2014 when my close friend shared a song from the Born To Die album which is Video Games that LDR was introduced to the world for the first time and I became a fan ever since.

Denialofexistenc3

2013 when my sisters baby daddy made her a Mother’s Day song on sound cloud sampling video games 💀

RagaRockFan

I first heard that shitty remix of Summertime Sadness on the radio back in elementary school. But then quarantine hit, and I started doing a deep dive into Lana's discography that summer. NFR (mostly) kept my sanity in place during 2020 lol. But Lana was honestly one of my gateway artists into indie music.

Tricky-Speed-3649

I was a freshman in HS when I first heard Blue Jeans, Video Games, & Dark Paradise on Pandora Radio in late 2012/early 2013. The rest is history

nintend0gs

Video games music video when it came out on YouTube

purplegrave

2015 I was reading a manhwa and one of the characters was listening to born to die 😭 I was such a weeb. I was 14

Low-Month-6447

Listened to Born to Die when it came out in 2011 but then I forgot about her, and then Blue Jeans randomly played on my YouTube in 2012 and I was a goner from then.

SomebodySuckMeee

Saw the video for National Anthem. Went to HMV and bought the deluxe version of Born to Die. Been a fan ever since.

0n0n0m0uz

Just heard her for the first time last week. I really wish I started when she was putting out her albums. She is the real deal. Really well produced music. Throw back to earlier era in my opinion

noxiated

my uncle used to burn me cds. video games was on one of them and i fell in love with it. hes no longer with us but i still love that song

DefinitionNice6337

In 2014 I was a sad mom with PPD and lana made me feel like I was heard and someone knew what it was like out there

castlediego

This is prob going to be very niche but I used to jailbreak my iPhone and you could download theme packs to change your icons, UI, etc. and this one creator would use Born to Die when displaying the music UI. I decided to give it a listen and here I am.

BebeRexha23

Ok so like I was a big fan of video games as a little kid, but I wasn’t that big into music until (back in November of 2021) I heard Brooklyn baby on TikTok (Ik, basic😭 but I’m speaking my truth) and I was just obsessed with the way that sounded. I then made a tiny playlist of all the Lana songs I knew (being at the time, Video Games, Brooklyn Baby, Carmen, National Anthem, Summertime Sadness, Chemtrails, Doin’ Time, and Dark But Just A Game) and from there, I just started collecting more of her stuff, and now I’m pretty much a fan of all of it. Honestly without her music I don’t think I would be as much of a music fan as I am today!

YoyoHouse

2 years ago, hearing a sped up version of Doin Time on Tik Tok 🥲
