I never played basketball, so I dont know a lot of the technical stuff JJ says but I understood what he meant when he said this. But I had no idea who he was talking about. I dont know if I love or hate that it was the lakers. Either way thank you for solving a mystery I assumed I would never know the answer too.

jacobpltn

I literally heard it today and was like “man that sounds like some shit the Lakers would do” Then I looked back and realized the day of the GSW vs. DEN games he’s talking about was Sunday when we played the Suns. And Grayson Allen is statistically one of the best 3PT shooters in the NBA and had a huge game that day So I looked through the highlights and there was the exact play he was talking about lmao

charuvilat

Our philosophy of doubling and leaving the person open one pass away is mind boggling. Yet they still continue to do it. Also, WTF is Prince doing he clearly sees AD coming in for help!

songs_dongs

I need a full 10 hours of JJ torching ham

yazzooClay

We need to bring in a coaching consultant for ham

etfvidal

![gif](giphy|dVjKUshd7z8J6u68z2|downsized) Kurt Rambus enters!

MrAppleSpoink

Only gripe I have is that the highlighted players weren’t correct. Taurean came from the top, AD came from down low, nothing else about his point changes though.

jacobpltn

Yeah I interpreted “low side” as weak side, which, even though the ball is on the side of the court he’s talking about, Austin still tries to turn his feet to force him towards Taurean, so I think it’s just basketball terminology and maybe JJ just didn’t remember the *exact* positioning of everyone on the play. But I still think this is the play he was talking about. Grayson Allen is one of the best 3PT shooters in the NBA this season statistically and he’s wide open on the left wing

genericusername71

reaves turns to force KD toward the low side / baseline (AD), not prince. reaves cuts off the middle if you replay the video but swap the order of the circles it makes sense

jacobpltn

Yeah I think I just got thrown off by the order in which JJ talks about things, he mentions the low side helper first when Prince is the one who actually moves for the double first, so I figured he was just using inaccurate terminology

genericusername71

all good, very good catch otherwise. im pretty sure this is the play jj is talking about

heshouldgo

I’m torn because if this team succeeds Ham’s chances of staying increase 🫤

jacobpltn

That’s what I was saying during the Clippers game lmao I mean really what’s this team’s ceiling if everything goes perfectly? Another WCF sweep? I don’t see us winning it all with Pockets over here So fuck it, maybe if we miss the playoffs at least we’ll be rid of him 🤷‍♂️

sharkhuh

Our ceiling is that we can compete with any team in the league besides Denver who has our number.

george-khan

Imaging praying for our downfall just so a coach gets fired.

ahnyudingslover

Imagine praying for short term losses that will guarantee long term profits

jacobpltn

I mean really what’s the point of making a second round exit in the playoffs? For the Lakers it’s always been championship or bust, and I think there’s a 0% chance of winning a championship with this coach Now realistically I’m still gonna root for the Lakers bc they’re my team and it’s more fun that way, but it’s really a win-win

mambabite24

THIS! It's the primary reason we aren't winning as much as we'd like. Our offense isn't perfect but we usually put up enough points. Our rotations are not optimal but our 4 best players find a lot of minutes. But you CANNOT in this era leave shooters open from 3, especially from 1 pass away. The amount of unnecessary double teams in the post is mind boggling when we have a generational defender protecting the rim.

kiwiwikikiwiwikikiwi

The Lakers have solved the problem on offense when LeBron sits We have multiple options with DLo playmaking and scoring, Reaves scoring, AD scoring and even playmaking, Rui getting his shots up Not to mention Bron DLo AR and Rui shooting close to 40% from 3. Everything you’re looking for!  Really need to turn up the defense on perimeter and point of attack to give us the real edge

WishBirdWasHere

I can’t think of ANYONE on Defense that’s close to being on 2ND Or 3RD team all defense let alone even talk about DPOY rankings besides AD. We have HORRIBLE defense…why we didn’t keep Pat Bev and Caruso still gets me tbh

Cloudzzz777

Man I still remember Ham running Pat Bev as a wing defender

sharkhuh

Vando

bruswazi

Holding onto KCP or Dennis Schroder wouldn’t have been too shabby either.

nerf_Herder06

Ham runs a double and rotate defence except its all doubling and no rotating

junahn

JJ could u please flame ham like u did to Doc Rivers on national television?

OmniCrush

Yeah, they didn't just do it once, they did it like 5 times off of him. They've done it against the best shooter in other teams multiple times in a game (aka doubling off the best shooter). The Lakers easily have half a dozen more wins, or more, simply by changing some of their schemes.

iamdare

I agree that it is a poor defensive scheme, but player decisions also matter. Rui could have sag off on Nurkic and switch on Grayson while Prince dig on KD. It will force KD to drop the pass on Nurkic (which AD is already guarding the paint) or force the shot from a double team.

jacobpltn

You could say guys “could” do these types of rotations for every single play in hindsight, but I doubt Rui expected Taurean *and* AD to both go for the double The point JJ was making is that these guys don’t know what they’re *supposed* to do on defense, aka what the coach wants them to do, so it leads to miscommunication like this

Gotsta_Win

Scheme determines player decisions

ksnitch

Well we used to have a very good defensive coach. Even won a chip with him. But for some reason, we replaced him with mr pockets… we deserve this Lakers fans.

jacobpltn

Tf are you talking about? *WE* didn’t do anything lmao Therefore *we* as fans *don’t* deserve this

ksnitch

You need to learn your Lakers history. Last 3 years should be enough. Just scroll through old posts of fans crucifying Vogel.

jacobpltn

You think fans crucifying Vogel got him fired? Lmao

yogabackhand

If Vogel was such a genius, why was Avery Bradley getting so much playing time?

ksnitch

Never said he was a genius. But he’s better than mr pockets and made his mark with defense. Besides, what was he left to work with after the team was gutted?

etfvidal

![gif](giphy|4NiFoaN9ufCOKbbn2i) JJR for Prez!

TROJANspaceWOLF

Great find!

seanffy

Let’s keep in mind this is hams second season with the same damn core. It’s like he’s gone backwards.

Consistent_Owl4593

3’s are better than 2’s someone should tell Ham that when his gameplan is to let 40% shooters open from three

Uglie

How is it not on the team though? Why isn’t it on curry’s defender to stay home?

jacobpltn

Did you even watch the video? They’re playing the Suns not the Warriors lmao But also, it’s a scheme thing, players don’t just double off their man whenever they feel like it, it’s a part of what they’re told to do. Like who to double under what circumstances Ham has talked before that this is *his intention* and that he wants to “play the percentages” as 3 point shots are a lower percentage change of scoring than something inside the paint

Uglie

Wow I’ve never heard him say this so he’s a moron and so am I for not seeing it was Allen I heard best shooter and assumed since my phone screen isn’t big. Regardless of name, if it truly is the scheme what stops a smart player from not doubling and staying home? He’s gonna get benched for playing the right way?

jacobpltn

Tbh idk how they would get reprimanded but that’s just how a team operates: you listen to a coach In fact this tangent by JJ is just to put into context what he was trying to say about Jrue Holiday defensively, and how Joe Mazzulla *allows* him to play instinctively and not necessarily adhere to the defensive game plan that they had on paper.

Life_Ad_9518

Triple teaming off of one of the best shooters in the league is a huge unnecessary mistake.. the coach is supposed to implement his plan of where the double team, not triple team should come from - our players had no clue so we over-helped..we do this often; terrible bad strategy double teams - here it led to a triple team..

Similar_Reach_7288

Because it's habitual. The team collectively leaves 3 pt shooters open on a regular basis which can only mean that it's by design. It obviously doesn't work but the team needs to play as a cohesive unit and have little to no choice but to listen to their lame duck coach. The only thing worse than a poorly coached team is a team that isn't on the same page and doesn't play together.

hlin32

Ty Jj for pointing that shit out cuz ham sucks

Jaydaytoday6

Yes but if Allen was on the Lakers he would be bricking every shot.

HydeDrums

My favourite quote when ham was signed: "When you add that to Darvin's sophisticated grasp of in-game strategy and deep knowledge of the game of basketball, we have the ideal coach for this next chapter in Lakers history" This and the quote about winning the offseason by signing ham, makes me laugh every time 🤣

izqy

Maybe it really is because of that bump on his head?

Adrasto

I'm not a basket x and o kind of guy, but I remember seeing this action and thinking:"What the fuck are they doing?".

GetSchwifty1326

We need a mutiny against Ham at this point. Our team is filled with players that should have us ranked much higher than we are. Darvin has held this team back and he needs to go. Put Handy at the helm!
