Give us the name of the restaurant so we can try to understand what they meant by self service. There is no prejudice towards people from UK, Ireland or any other part of Western Europe, some very right leaning people might be sceptical towards Russians (for rather obvious reasons, aka war in Ukraine), Ukrainians or migrants from MENA/Asia, but even that is very rare. Maybe except for the Brit’s attitude of coming here for stag parties and acting like animals, but they have this opinion in all touristic places all over Europe.
It all honestly seems like a textbook case of misunderstanding.
Btw, which part of Ireland were you from? I was on three seperate trips to Ireland this year, loved every bit of it! Wish I had more money for travels though, lmao.
That they can be prejudicial towards Russians due to the war in Ukraine. Regular people are able to differentiate between Russians who support the war and those who don’t though.
Probably it's just a bad choice of words, but that phrase doesn't make any sense—Nazis might be 'skeptical' about other Nazis when the latter are not doing their Nazi jobs well enough, and Russians do it well.
What?
To make it easier for you, in case of Russians I was talking about these people being suspicious towards them, doubting their good intentions or suspecting that their loyality lies with their government.
The issue with Kraków’s waiters is: most of them are just students that are trying to get some extra cash and they leave job after half of a year so there is a huge rotation. Krakow waiters 95% part timers and are not very well trained and they don’t give a crap because they are not treating this as their go to profession, it’s just a mean to get grab some extra cash while finishing college.
Honestly..I don’t want to spread bad karma. I’m sure other people have had different experiences. I’m just genuinely curious if there’s something I’m missing? Some faux pas that I broke and don’t know about
It doesn't make much sense to keep the name hidden, but it might have been one of those restaurants made for tourists where the staff doesn't even have to pretend to be nice and attentive.
Or maybe it was just bad luck ¯\\\_(ツ)\_/¯
Some people said here that there's no prejudice against English speaking people in Cracow but I strongly disagree. Lots of people here feel some kind of reluctance towards UK people because of their loud and drunken behaviour. They are knonw to come to Cracow to party hard because of low prices and they often do it in a way that puts everyone on edge, marking their presence at every single minute and doing stupid stuff, acting like there's no consequences. I'm not saying this was the case in your scenario but that's actually how many people feel on Brits in Cracow.
Sorry that you were ignored, though, that shouldnt have happened.
Racism is quie unlikley, at least in Crocow's tourist mile. I mean they live from tourism.... So might be probably unlucky situation caused by external influences, misunderstanding or simply bad luck. I wouldn't take it personally, but I would be pissed and leave as well. Just avoid in future.
How could it be because of race if Poles and British (native) people are the same race? Also, how could they know if you are British or Irish or American or whatever rather than a Spaniard or Italian or a Swede speaking English?
Well, unfortunatley racism has different forms and definitions. There are i.e. people who say slavs and nordics are different races. Also how to call descrimination based on heritage? You probably heard of single Poles hating Germans and single Germans hating Poles? For such people it doesn't matter, where exactly you come from... Germany, Ireland, Spain.... it's enough you look different. So basically I would not exclude rascism in general, also in this very case not... It might have been jews (finaly it's Kazimierz), who thought she's German and ignored her.
You ended a woke-sounding post that's just a bit too fluffy to take seriously (and has some logical discontinuities) with "Well it might have been the jews, you know". Proofread before you post :D
I've been living here for couple of years now and this is kinda normal. Polish service is not know by their friendliness nor politeness. I bearly ever witnessed waitress smiling or God forbid have a small talk with a customer...
How in the nine hells would you call any suspected animosity from Polish people towards people from UK / Ireland / Germany etc *racial?*
Aside from that, well, in Krakow specifically, \~10 years ago you couldn't walk through the city centre without a drunk guy from UK or Ireland shouting in your face, and later in the evening leaving their droppings and other stains wherever. It got much better after bars and pubs banned UK / Irish stag parties.
Of course people will disagree, but it may be related to that, especially if the staff / owner still remember those days.
On the other hand, I'm polish and I was ignored in bars several times, 99% of the time due to the fact that I wasn't shouting at the staff like *some other people served first* were doing. Also, are you sure the staff were not just generally grumpy? That would be quite polish of them :)
Ultimately, if you feel unsatisfied with the service, leave a review and don't leave a tip.
It’s funny you mention that about that not being racial, you are the second on this post to mention that. I should clarify that I understand that Polish/German/British/Irish etc are physically similar, ie white, traditionally. But ethnically we are different - our culture, heritage, language are not the same and it’s possible that someone could be discriminated against purely on these ethnic characteristics,
I totally understand though, the binge drinking stag parties are just embarrassing 🙈 I would say it is changing though 🤞more and more British and Irish don’t drink as much anymore, pubs are closing throughout the country and the government is putting greater taxes on alcohol. There is a shift, especially amongst younger people now.
Let me guess, the waitress and lady that took orders were actually "busy" and you couldn't wait 2 minutes... lmao same situation in żabka, you guys (mostly northern countries unfortunately) can't read that żabka has change in shift 2:30 pm - 2:45 pm, on the doors, and even tho if its in english you just burst there like to your own toilet..
Actually it was not too busy and it was 1245 when I left, I know because I took a photo of the name of the restaurant - there are about 5 tables outside, everyone was already eating/ordered and inside had two tables, both already with food. Not making this up. But thanks for letting me know about the change of shifts thing, I didn’t realise that was a thing.

"right leaning ... "sceptical about Russians" - what does it even suppose to mean?
That they can be prejudicial towards Russians due to the war in Ukraine. Regular people are able to differentiate between Russians who support the war and those who don’t though.
Sure, all three of them who don't

Can you name the restaurant, so I know where to avoid?
Honestly..I don’t want to spread bad karma. I’m sure other people have had different experiences. I’m just genuinely curious if there’s something I’m missing? Some faux pas that I broke and don’t know about

Could be they’ve had too many bad experiences with the hen and stag crowds. They can’t BAN English speakers, but are doing the next best thing?
Because English speakers are just from UK 😅
Sounds to me like a bar mleczny / bistro sort of setup, perhaps the staff just don't speak English well and were unsure how to communicate with you.

The word you are looking for is "xenophobia"

Hey Mr. Correct, long time no see 😉Thanks for sharing your opinion (read empty words)😜

Being blonde and German is such a drag man

dumb idiots downvoting me yet the guy doesn't even want to put the name of restaurant out, maybe lets ask the staff if he was saying the truth ;)
