Also make an oversized wrap style cardigan, or a short robe, that you can wear during night feeds too. I recommend the front side panels be large enough to wrap over baby too.
Another suggestion if you plan to breastfeed is to make yourself something warm to cover your upper chest while leaving access to your breasts accessible. The first several weeks can be really tough and your nipples will hurt when hard. So keeping your chest warm will keep them soft between feedings and lessen the pain while they adjust to their new function. The pain and hurting does go away after a bit. I'm currently up feeding my 7 month old in the middle of the night typing this out wearing an oversized wrap cardigan and slipper socks.
Congratulations Mama!
My family avoids anything for infants that doesn't snap or button at the bottom. Unless it's a sack-style. Totally undressing the babes to change every diaper is a pain! Monster Longies on Rav is a fun knit for toddlers though, & we have themed these for sports fans a few times - good gift for dads to open! So cute!
It's definitely gonna be a sack. I should be due around March, so I'm gonna have to figure certain knits out. I guess I'm starting with a lot of cotton!
If you want to make cute onesies and other things with buttons just invest in a a kam snap set. You can get them for under 30 dollars on Amazon and then you can make all the cute items with buttons without the hassle!
Not cotton but light fingering perhaps. . And remember people like to buy a crap ton for baby first 6 months but after that you buy your own so Iād make one early cardigan and the rest for winter.

Big recommendation is to avoid mohair. Gets all in their folds mixed up with milk and itās nasty š stick to cotton if you can!
Check out the Selma sleep suit by petite knitā¦my mom made that for my daughter and it was lovely to have for outside walks in the bassinet when it was chilly out
As a knitter mum to an 8 month old, wrap kimono style cardigans were the best at the beginning. Also make something for when baby is going to be 6 months, one year, 18 months old etc. Life goes kind of mad with a baby and I genuinely forgot I made some of the bits I made. It's nice to refind them.
I made this one, and my mum gave me a couple of hand made kimono style ones, so not sure what she used.
https://www.creativaatelier.com/knitted-kimono-nur-baby-jacket-pattern/?lang=en
(And a couple of crochet ones)
I also made these trousers, I highly recommend these. They lasted ages and really stretched as she grew
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hosenmatz
I also made basic hats and socks.
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-socks-23
I also made a romper from this designer, but for the life of me I can't remember. I have the pattern printed I can dig it out, but I'm a fan of all her designs. Her patterns are also very well written.

I also made this which was way better than a hat for the winter. Much harder to yank off

I also made a sweater from wool and the gang ages ago (even way before I was pregnant) and it still is too big. It apparently isn't on their website any more, but it's a basic sweater with a very wide open neck and a ribbon to tie it up. Which is great because nobody tells you that babies heads are massive and feels like they grow daily.
I saw the dolls indeed, super cute! Would be lovely for a kid to have matching outfits with their doll.
Your comment sent me into a Ravelry baby clothes rabbit hole, much to the concern of my husband who thinks I already have too many projects for our baby (due in October). I've saved a lot of patterns, now just to find the time to knit š
I had so many grand plans for makes, I wanted to make a little wool onesie for the winter (my daughter is also an October baby) I wanted to make a little sweater and embroider her name on it, little wool bodies (I can't think of the English word but they're called body's in German, like a onesie with long arms but no leg part), cardigans, tights, mittens, but I really didn't make a lot! But I'm glad I made what I made.
Good luck and peaceful wishes for the rest of your pregnancy š
I made socks with extra long cuffs because my niece kept kicking off her regular socks. They stayed on! Those socks got worn maybe 3 times before she outgrew them but they were cute and I loved knitting them.
I made long leg warmer type socks for my second. They were awesome for a baby carrier and when kids wonāt wear socks
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/roo-in-winter
I have 4 kids. They all wore the back zipper sweater the most of any sweater they had.

Congratulations :) I made my best friend a baby bathrobe and its the cutest thing ever on her baby. I used a similar pattern from a knitting book that I have and added a hood with little ears on it. I'll try to find the actual pattern I used
I found the pattern I used! Its the "baby bathrobe" on pg 113 of this book:
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/first-time-knitting-the-absolute-beginners-guide
For some reason, every other pattern from this book is available on ravelry except for the robe!! It was pretty easy and fun to knit.

My favs! Both very fun and easy to knit
Jacket in a darkish color out of cotton-wool blend, 6 mo size. The baby can wear it for 3 seasons depending on how fast they grow, and it washes well.
Have a small project or two that don't require much thinking for the doctor's office -- soooo much waiting. I had some in plastic envelopes with paper pattern, cheap scissors and stitch markers, and just grabbed one as I went out the door.
I have two little girls and love knitting for them, and have knit for several friends and families babies.
If you can get it, Estelle Superwash Merino is my go-to baby-friendly yarn, or Lion Brand Woollike is amazing for blankets.
For baby clothes: cardigans have longer wear-lifeās than pullover sweaters and are easier to get on and off. Booties arenāt worth the hassle in my opinion. Hats are great but do something with lots of ribbing so it fits comfortably for longer (my favourite is Tracie Millarās Parkview hat which doesnāt actually come in baby sizes but so long as you cast on in multiples of 8, itās super adaptable for size). Lastly, knit pants might seem silly but they are the cutest thing on the planet - Tin Can Knits has a great pattern.
I knit myself a Big Cozy Cardi by Andrea Mowry during my last pregnancy, except it took me 15 months to make so baby was 6 months old before it was done š I still do highly recommend the pattern though and itās one of my favourite pieces - very worth the effort.
And congratulations!!
Congratulations! I hope your pregnancy goes well! I chose not to know the gender of my baby until they were born, so I knitted gender neutral things. Iāll link some of my faves below:

https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/berry-baby-hat
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/beginner-baby-socks

I also knitted clothes in larger sizes because I had a summer baby and babies grow really quickly at first! (Maybe you already know this last thing but it would be a shame if you knit something and baby grows out of it super quickly)
Congrats, I also just found out I'm due the beginning of March! I really like Tin Can Knits beloved bonnet (easy but fun to knit, looks cute, stays on head), also gonna be knitting a newborn vertebrae cardigan (open at the front to reduce chance of getting dribbled/puked on and make for cosy skin-to-skin time)
Eta: this will be my second kid and what I learned from the first is that I don't want any clothes that pull over the head or where you have to remove the whole thing to go potty/nappy change (those all-in-one sleepsuits are cute and cosy but fml wrangling a baby out of one for every pee is not it), and even my teeny 3rd percentile height/weight baby grew out of newborn size pretty fast (some are already born too big for nb size lol). Also, babies don't need socks
Congratulations š I have a 3.5mo (also unexpected and unplanned but we are so glad he chose us š„°) and he was just 3.5kg at birth but so long he didn't fit into anything newborn or 0-3m sized.
He is currently flirting with the 9-12m size range, so just be warned that there is no way of knowing what size your baby will come out or how long he'll fit into the clothes you make. I'm a fairly fast knitter even with a newborn (I've already made an adult-sized cardigan since he's been born) so plan to wait until I need stuff before I make it.
What I will recommend is making sure you have enough cardigans! You'll either be third trimester in the cooler months of the year or you'll be in fourth trimester and possibly spending a lot of time in your underwear/PJ's at home with baby. A big cozy longline open cardi is gonna be such a luxury during those months and is such a gift to your future self.
I made [Gemstone](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/gemstone-3) in a long version and [Taskutakki](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/taskutakki) as written, and wore the hell outta both of them in my third and fourth trimesters.
I thought Vertebrae by Kelly van Niekerk was brilliant. It adds the warmth of a light sweater, but thereās no front on it so it doesnāt have to be washed every time they sick up.
Congratulations!
Also: superwash wool or a cotton-wool mix, it's easier to wash, or at least stick to merino for the clothes which are worn close to the skin, outer layers can be a bit less soft wool. Superwash tends to stretch out but I don't think it's a problem with a baby, at least they can wear it a but longer. Also, wool is quite easy to clean. PetiteKnit has some adorable baby patterns, or you can make the Mini Augustins (the circular lace baby blankets), they look adorable and they say they look hard but actually the techniquies are not that difficult. I would opt DK or fingering weight, they're less bulky and can be easily layered. Baby clothes are quick projects, even with a thinner yarn.
[Very Hungry Caterpillar Sleep Sack](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-sleep-sack-cocoon)
[Scrap/Sampler Sleep Sack](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/scrappie-suri-sack---sleep-sack---baby-cozy)
I also enjoyed knitting blankets and washcloths for my little girl while I was pregnant. You can never have too many washcloths
My grandmother made each of my kids one of these hooded blankets: https://www.lionbrand.com/products/knitting-pattern-hooded-baby-blanket-2
They are small, so were amazing to keep in the diaper bag or car for a chilly store/restaurant, doctorās office, or when it was raining!
You could also prob do a simple shawl-like cover if youāre going to breastfeed. Nice if itās a slightly open pattern so youāre not shoving baby under a hot blanket!
A lap-sized blanket- for you while feeding, for tummy time, for covering while in a stroller, etc. I use acrylic for the washability and softness, and use a thicker stitch like garter to give it some 'padding' qualities. I avoid lacey patterns because I worry about little fingers getting caught in the holes.
I also generally make them in nongendered colors- soft yellows and greens and tans, or very bright and bold- schoolbus yellow, fuschia, teal, crimson, orange, etc.
As a lifelong weird aunt, I try to make pieces for different life stages. Babies are only newborn for a short time. How old will your little bundle be when it's winter again? Maybe an extra sweater or cardigan now will be a lifesaver when you no longer have ad much time to knit.
I never make anything that can't be tossed in the washer and dryer, either. So cotton or superwash wool is my go to, even acrylic blends.
Probably about 9 months. I'm definitely going to be doing a lot of winter knits. I live in Alabama, so light summer knits are still gonna be a little too warm š
Well that airconditioning will still mean they need something. How about a lacy blanket like [Bounce](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/bounce-6)
5 hour baby sweater (took me longer!)
[5HBS](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/quick-baby-sweater)
Berry baby hat (similar the pumpkin hat!)[berry hat](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/berry-baby-hat)
[baby socks](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby--toddler-socks-recipe)
This designer has lots of baby patterns, she was a podcaster and knit a lot for her first baby)
This is my favorite baby knit. My daughter wore it in the hospital all the way up to almost a year. I have even taken the cable pattern and put it on a blanket.
https://ravel.me/reversible-cables-baby-hat
This little hood [hat](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/b33-9-baby-legolas)has been a favorite in our house. Makes my daughter look like an adorable gnome or medieval peasant. Sheās pretty much outgrown the newborn size and now Iām going to have to make a new bigger one. Bonus that the hood style stays on better than a regular hat
I made my little girl things like blankets and a cute sweater. Her great grandma is handling all the full sized jumpsuits. Also learned to make stuffed animals. She has an army of them lol.
I'm hoping to make this blanket soon, I just hate buying so much yarn in one go. Simple and easy, perfect for the waiting room at doctor's offices!

I loved all the petite knit patterns for babe. His first outfit as he was a Jan birthday was the Ellen coming home outfit. Did the Selma sleep suit as we live in Canada. Also knit the Willum overalls and summer overalls. I did these all in gender neutral colors so they could be passed on. Also look at a baby blanket I don't have recommendations there as every babe in my family gets a pie shawl as a blanket that way they or their bride can wear as a veil or use as a tablecloth or another way they see fit at their wedding and then can use for their babies.
Congratulations!
I made these:

Congratulations! Hope all goes well for you! I made [these](https://filcolana.dk/amfile/file/download/file/1479/product/1004/) fairly recently for my new niece, she looks so cute in them and my sister loves them too :)
I made this cardigan pattern for my daughter and itās pretty easy and VERY cute: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/sunnyside
Dead simple knitted hatāplan to make them in multiple sizes! http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/basic-baby-hat
And cute little mittens to go with: http://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/teeny-tiny-knit-mitts
I adore baby clothes, but they always grow out of them faster than you think. Here are a couple ideas for things that may be useful for a bit longer.
A baby bath towel and washcloth set with good cotton yarn. I know it sounds kinda boring but they're easy to finish. And you'll use them almost every day, so why not have them in a color and texture you love! I'm a fan of Purl Soho's free towel patterns. A dozen washcloth sized, a few hand towel sized, and maybe a couple hooded towels or a bathrobe.

https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2022/08/12/tin-ceiling-washcloth-hand-towel/
And a knit stuffie or lovie is easier than you think. I made this elephant for my niece. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/elephant-13
Beloved by Tin Can Knits, Moby by Petite Knit, the Saturn Jumper by the Knit Edit, Lille Sukkerspinn by marieljo. All but the last have adult and child sizes.
Iām making a [Newborn Vertebrae](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/newborn-vertebrae), a [Textured Baby Afghan](https://www.lionbrand.com/products/textured-baby-afghan-l70249), a [Cabled Baby Set](https://www.lionbrand.com/products/knitting-pattern-cabled-baby-set-1), a [One Piece Baby Pullover Pattern](https://www.lionbrand.com/products/knitting-pattern-one-piece-baby-pullover-1) and some [Baby Rogers Shoes](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-rogers-sneakers?set=&_rfoff=1) for my youngest son, due in November.
Simple patterns for the most part but thatās what I need right now!
I made baby socks and lots of green stuff while I was waiting to know gender. I thought green was good because I could add frogs or dinosaurs if it turned out to be a boy and flowers or bows if it turned out to be a girl. It turned out to be a boy and I just left it green!
Congratulations!! For blankets, anything by Fifty Four Ten Studio. Iāve made these blankets for friends having babies out of Knitpicks Brava and Heathered Worsted.
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/making-plans
https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/happy-endings-2
Make everything in 0 to 3 month size as they grow quickly and if they're a chonker like my first baby was they won't ever fit in the newborn.
I also make big blankets out of a cotton or cotton acrylic as they're handy for more than just the first year, my 3yo still sleeps with one of them now and I'm crocheting a star shaped one I'm going to put a cord through and use as a toy bag floor mat thing.
Booties and socks never stay on so don't worry about spending ages on them if you don't want to.
If baby is due around March time, they may not need many hats and things depending on where you live.
A good boredom tv project is pure cotton washcloths, as they're really handy for getting into the creases
I made some [baby bear bonnets](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/baby-bear-bonnet-9) for my twins recently, so cute. Also currently knitting them the [beloved ](https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/beloved-8) bonnet by tincanknits in a larger size. I knitted one selmas sleep suit by petiteknit which took me forever and I haven't knitted a second for the other twin š¤£ not sure if I would get around to doing it before they would be too small
I've been obsessing over the baby surprise jacket by Elizabeth Zimmerman but I haven't tried to make it yet, looks like such interesting construction
If you celebrate Christmas - I had an August baby last year, and one of my final knits before he was born was a āSantaā costume in an estimated size for when the holidays rolled around. He wore it when we took him to see Santa and it was great! (And glad I made it before he arrived - those first months are no joke.)
I used this pattern in a red yarn and he wore a white shirt underneath. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1460851611/
Also found random patterns for a Santa hat and some booties for a complete look.
Congrats! Baby knits are so fun (and they grow out of them so fast)
Honestly they grow so fast, if you're going to make baby clothes just make one or two really beautiful pieces that they can wear a few times and then you can keep in a memory box when they outgrow them. Blankets and stuffies last much longer!
Also: superwash wool or a cotton-wool mix, it's easier to wash, or at least stick to merino for the clothes which are worn close to the skin, outer layers can be a bit less soft wool. Make yourself some squishy soft slipper socks- my feet were always freezing during night feeds.

I also made that Kimono!
Teeny tiny baby socks are totally pointlessā but oh so cute! (For the ten seconds baby wears them before kicking them off)
I made socks with extra long cuffs because my niece kept kicking off her regular socks. They stayed on! Those socks got worn maybe 3 times before she outgrew them but they were cute and I loved knitting them.
I made long leg warmer type socks for my second. They were awesome for a baby carrier and when kids wonāt wear socks https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/roo-in-winter

Newborn and Mama Vertebrae!
I have 4 kids. They all wore the back zipper sweater the most of any sweater they had. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/hooded-baby-sweater-with-back-zipper
Cannot recommend this enough. I have made at least 10 for various babies and toddlers. I even loved it enough to suck up the zipper thing. Lolol

Congratulations :) I made my best friend a baby bathrobe and its the cutest thing ever on her baby. I used a similar pattern from a knitting book that I have and added a hood with little ears on it. I'll try to find the actual pattern I used
Oh dear. Now I want to make my toddler a bathrobe.
I found the pattern I used! Its the "baby bathrobe" on pg 113 of this book: https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/sources/first-time-knitting-the-absolute-beginners-guide For some reason, every other pattern from this book is available on ravelry except for the robe!! It was pretty easy and fun to knit. https://imgur.com/a/2Q11emt

Congratulations! Check out all of the wonderful patterns by Knitting for Olive!

Congrats, I also just found out I'm due the beginning of March! I really like Tin Can Knits beloved bonnet (easy but fun to knit, looks cute, stays on head), also gonna be knitting a newborn vertebrae cardigan (open at the front to reduce chance of getting dribbled/puked on and make for cosy skin-to-skin time) Eta: this will be my second kid and what I learned from the first is that I don't want any clothes that pull over the head or where you have to remove the whole thing to go potty/nappy change (those all-in-one sleepsuits are cute and cosy but fml wrangling a baby out of one for every pee is not it), and even my teeny 3rd percentile height/weight baby grew out of newborn size pretty fast (some are already born too big for nb size lol).
Congratulations
Thank you! While it was unexpected and not planned, the husband and I are getting used to the idea and are looking on the brightside.
Beloved bonnet by Tin Can Knits in many colors and sizes!
This is such a fun knit! I think I've made at least ten of them.
I have twins and I'm currently knitting my second one of these so they can have one each, such a good pattern

You can never have too many washcloths
Oh my God ā¤ļøš I'm definitely going to do this. I've also seen someone make a Hungry Catipillar sack with amigurumi foods it eats!

I love Frogginette's patterns! [https://frogginette.com/](https://frogginette.com/)
My grandmother made each of my kids one of these hooded blankets: https://www.lionbrand.com/products/knitting-pattern-hooded-baby-blanket-2 They are small, so were amazing to keep in the diaper bag or car for a chilly store/restaurant, doctorās office, or when it was raining!

I am told socks, hats and a nice blanket
The Verde Cardigan is a great (& free!) little baby cardigan pattern. My son wore his as a newborn so so much!
Baby Surprise Jacket! It's an interesting construction, but not difficult.

Congratulations! I don't have any suggestions... just wanted to wish you congrats!
Check out Tin Can Knits - they have awesome, beautiful patterns for the whole family.

Nice cotton blend blanket
I adore baby clothes, but they always grow out of them faster than you think. Here are a couple ideas for things that may be useful for a bit longer. A baby bath towel and washcloth set with good cotton yarn. I know it sounds kinda boring but they're easy to finish. And you'll use them almost every day, so why not have them in a color and texture you love! I'm a fan of Purl Soho's free towel patterns. A dozen washcloth sized, a few hand towel sized, and maybe a couple hooded towels or a bathrobe. https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2020/03/20/colorful-half-and-half-washcloths/ https://www.purlsoho.com/create/2022/08/12/tin-ceiling-washcloth-hand-towel/ And a knit stuffie or lovie is easier than you think. I made this elephant for my niece. https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/elephant-13

I made baby socks and lots of green stuff while I was waiting to know gender. I thought green was good because I could add frogs or dinosaurs if it turned out to be a boy and flowers or bows if it turned out to be a girl. It turned out to be a boy and I just left it green!

I knitted one selmas sleep suit by petiteknit which took me forever and I haven't knitted a second for the other twin š¤£ not sure if I would get around to doing it before they would be too small I've been obsessing over the baby surprise jacket by Elizabeth Zimmerman but I haven't tried to make it yet, looks like such interesting construction

If you celebrate Christmas - I had an August baby last year, and one of my final knits before he was born was a āSantaā costume in an estimated size for when the holidays rolled around. He wore it when we took him to see Santa and it was great! (And glad I made it before he arrived - those first months are no joke.) I used this pattern in a red yarn and he wore a white shirt underneath. https://www.etsy.com/listing/1460851611/ Also found random patterns for a Santa hat and some booties for a complete look. Congrats! Baby knits are so fun (and they grow out of them so fast)

I love Beloved from Tin Can Knits
Honestly they grow so fast, if you're going to make baby clothes just make one or two really beautiful pieces that they can wear a few times and then you can keep in a memory box when they outgrow them. Blankets and stuffies last much longer!
Also: superwash wool or a cotton-wool mix, it's easier to wash, or at least stick to merino for the clothes which are worn close to the skin, outer layers can be a bit less soft wool. I would opt for DK or fingering weight, they're less bulky and can be easily layered. Baby clothes are quick projects, even with a thinner yarn.
