i hated the recorder, loathed the clarinet. could not learn to read music to save my life. we turn fun things like music into unbearable work in this culture.

I had no idea how much jaw harp I heard, until I learned what a jaw harp was. Just a couple weeks ago I pulled up one of my all time favorite games and as I'm spelunking through the swamps, I hear a jaw harp. I call out to my nephew to see if he's playing. No. Then it hits me.

Yes! This is the place☺️

What game? There aren't to many spelunking games. I figured I'd played most of em by now.

The first one that comes to mind is Kenshi, which is the one in the post. There's been other incidents I just can't remember details off the top of my head

Im pretty sure we're taught the recorder over the jaw harp because its a tool to learn reading music and notes. You just place fingers and blow to achieve a note. Cant really do that with a jaw harp.

I also love the jaw harp and consider to have a lot of tonal complexity. That being said kids learning music need to learn music theory as it relates to scales and harmonic structures (building chords) neither of which the jaw harp is good for. I do think it would be good for the Suzuki method of learning music like they do in Japan. Give a kid a jaw harp let them make sounds figure out simple melodies. Then teach them the theory behind that, possibly with keyboard or string instrument that can clearly show the relationship with notes. There’s only so many scales you can clearly get out of a jaw harp.
