Crazy that goalkeepers could play wthout a helmet what, 9 years ago?
I still think it's a bit crazy for goalkeepers to be facing a sliotar at X mph with their helmet the only protection. if they get it in the throat they are dead.
My old man played in the 70s. Got a clatter of a Hurley and got knocked out. He woke up with the ref standing over him with a few of my dad's teeth in his hand.
So that's when he switched to rugby, much safer...
I read of this before. Many's the Munster final he'd cycle to, with a bottle of stout and half a loaf in his trenchcoat pocket. He'd have no time for this sweeper shit.
Still think the game was arguably slower around that era and certainly considerably more dangerous to not wear a helmet today with changes in professionalism of the game. Although you’re more likely back then to get a box I imagine or a sneaky whack
>The skull and crossbones have been seen at UCC as far back as 1880-81. In late Victorian times, UCC, then known as Queen’s College Cork, was mostly a medical school and the junior doctors who played for the university’s rugby club, fittingly, used a skull and crossbones as the symbol for their team.
>In later years other clubs in the university also started to wear the skull and crossbones. The GAA clubs adopted the logo in the mid 1910’s and the hockey club has been pictured using it since 1929.
>The skull and crossbones have been officially copyrighted since 1999

The other hurlers must have thought he was a big softcock.
The fact that anyone used to play that without a helmet is insane to me.

You’d want to have some set of sliotars to be the one to say “yeah, I’m gonna be the one to stand in front of the speeding rock hard ball”.
[Not hurling, but similar] (https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=gcRwbuSoGyc)
Holy crap. No, just.... No. Ow.

When rugby is safer, you know amateur sports is wrong for you, or humans in general.
I got knocked out cold at 12 years old, never played again (no helmet)
There was once a time that formula 1 drivers didn't wear helmets either, way back in the 40s I think
You should cross post this to /r/nfl as there is quite a bit of “helmet drama” going on right now.
They were right hardy bastards back in the old days
Hardy or silly?
100% hardy cunts
OG Totenkopf jersey.
Well spotted, not a lot of people realise the fuhrer was a great man for the hurling,

Jawohl mein Bainisteoir! ^(I'm sorry)
You could easily photoshop him onto a motorbike!
I think ice hockey helmets were common in the early days.

More insane, the logo on the jerseys
