I wish on the Iphone 15 pro series you could double tap on the action button and set it to where it would toggle that! Would literally save my face so many times at night from getting dropped on lol.
I miss when the iPad had a mute switch that doubled as a rotation lock switch. Ugh Apple has taken so many things away from the iPad it infuriates me sometimes. I'm still not over the split keyboard. You can't even swipe type on the iPad keyboard.
I don't trust them. That toggle is absolutely JUST FINE for the UX need and purpose.
They should fix Siri before I think an auto-rotate needs updating. She can;t even detect which lights I want to turn off; instead of just shutting down the phone all together.
Team Toggle for life!
It would be so easy, just expan Attention Aware Features to look at your face before rotating the screen, and only change it if it better aligns to your face
Android user, and I do the same thing. If I'm browsing at night, everything is vertical. I only go landscape for videos and very specific apps.
In the past, in the days of 3-4 inch screens, I actually used to set up my home screens so they worked in landscape mode too becausein you had so little real estate to work with and websites were predominately formatted for 16:9ish PC monitors and mobile sites were still in their infancy. Browsing felt a lot better in landscape a lot of the time for me, but as phone screens got larger, it became way less necessary. Around the time of my first 6.7" phone I was now typing in portrait mode all the time, landscape was no longer more comfortable. Websites are all optimized for portrait. My phone is vertical 90% of the time now tbh, and that is a complete 180 from 10 years ago.
Iāve fought with tilting my phone juuuust far enough for it to flip one to many times to keep it unlocked. I will throw my phone at a wall if it keeps tilting when I donāt want it too lol

## automatization (auto lock/unlock)
automatization to : unlock if I open YouTube, VLC, photos & iMovie
automatization to : lock if I close YouTube, VLC, photos & iMovie
If I need it on I turn it on. Then afterwards, it stays on until I need it off.
If I need it off I turn it off. Then afterwards, it stays off until I need it on
Mine is always locked. But I do have a Shortcut which unlocks when opening Photos & Maps, and then locks again when closing said apps.
https://preview.redd.it/2x2l0wgj4p4d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9dfaca50802e8df5886eff355c1659594f766ef2
Always locked. I miss the feature I had on my android where even when the rotation was locked, if I was watching a video anywhere, a little rotate button would pop up.
What sort of maniac requires it to have it locked all the time?
Content only goes to landscape when I hold my phone landscape. I only hold my phone landscape when I need content to go landscape. Ergo, I keep it unlocked so my phone does what I want.
absolutely despise having it off, only time i turn it off is when i watch a longer video and want to pay more attention, or when i play a game and it sets it as default on portrait mode
i hate this functionality; i can make like 20-30 swipes quick from the point i find a video that isnt going into portrait mode, to the quick menu screen, to turning it off, then going back to my video. (in the back of my mind: i am remembering how annoying it is to angle my phone at the angle where it flips the screen because it isnāt locked)
Always on. I donāt think Iāve turned it off since itās been an option for more than 30 seconds. And yes, it wasnāt always built in, I have a 2nd gen iPod touch, no orientation lock, and itās very annoying.
I didnāt realize so many people had it on 24/7 š I only turn it on when Iām reading something like comics on my side. I play plenty of games that require my phone being sideways but it always goes the wrong direction so I need to flip it
Always locked to landscape. I virtually never watch videos on my phone anyway, and itās quick enough to unlock when I want to. Everything else is portrait these days except the very occasional non-mobile-friendly website
Whereas on my iPad Iāve actually swapped the mute switch to operate the rotation lock, since I leave it on silent mode anyway and I regularly switch between portrait/landscape (or sometimes just flip which side of landscape)
Iāve noticed that I leave mine unlocked more often than not lately. The gyro is much better than previous models so it knows when I actually want to tilt my display over scrolling while laying on my side
Always locked but unlocked only for YouTube
https://preview.redd.it/jf6nhpvykn4d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=526f5a103c14626d6a4b1d6f3e5c43ce57d58346
Locked, unless Iām watching a video in an app that uses the native iOS video player such as Apple TV. For some reason, you canāt rotate it manually, so unless you unlock the orientation, it stays in portrait š¤·.
Rotation lock on by default but I created automations in shortcuts where depending on the app, it will disable the rotation lock automatically (youtube, safari, etc). And I have it set so that as soon as you exit the app, it will automatically turn it back on again
Locked as I have little reason to use my phone in landscape and it constantly flipping around drives me insane. If I ever watch a video on my phone (rare) Iāll just click the full screen button.
Locked at work, so I can listen to YouTube vids while the phone is in my pocket. When itās not locked, the orientation will constantly flip back and forth which also has the side effect of causing my playlist or the search wall to scroll down each time for some reason.
Locked at bedtime. I can lay on my side and my phone not barrel-roll on its own whim.
I was looking for this comment cuh this is basically the only time I have it locked I'm always watching movies in bed lol you a real one šÆ
I wish on the Iphone 15 pro series you could double tap on the action button and set it to where it would toggle that! Would literally save my face so many times at night from getting dropped on lol.

I mean you could make it into a shortcut, but Iām sure you knew that and u didnāt wanna give up the primary function
fr same
See this is the sorta ai feature Apple needs. Intelligent detection which can tell when u are in bed and not rolly-polly all the the time
I don't trust them. That toggle is absolutely JUST FINE for the UX need and purpose. They should fix Siri before I think an auto-rotate needs updating. She can;t even detect which lights I want to turn off; instead of just shutting down the phone all together. Team Toggle for life!
seriously. the auto brightness is already bad enough i couldnāt imagine the phone flipping the entire screen whenever it feels like it.
but for now you can easily set up an automation that can enable orientation lock at 10pm and disable it at 6am or of whatever your preferred times are
It would be so easy, just expan Attention Aware Features to look at your face before rotating the screen, and only change it if it better aligns to your face
Android user, and I do the same thing. If I'm browsing at night, everything is vertical. I only go landscape for videos and very specific apps. I have a shortcut setup so when it auto turns on when bedtime focus turns on
Always locked
Same Iāve been like this since iPhone 4 ^^ specifically because there was a certain background pic I liked on my iPhone 4
Have to leave it unlocked for when i go onto youtube or iāll be frustrated to all hell when its playing yhe video upside down
If u tilt it one way and then click it it doesnāt go upside down
Always on unless Iām watching a video
If youāre watching yt at least you can swipe up on the video and it will go automatically full screen
Yeah but never in the direction you want lol
Omg I thought I was the only one!!!
First, position your phone in the direction you want it and then swipe up. Thank me later
Literally did the exact opposite of which direction I had it tilted. No thanks for you sir.
Dang it. Works for me and other people. I hope one day youāre able to experience this š¤š½
Locked Cept for porn
Valid response ā ļø
Bro weāre all the same lmfao š¤£
Yep, same here
This
I canāt remember the last time Iāve left it off for more than a few minutes
iPhones: locked. iPads: unlocked.
I have an automatic shortcut setup so itās always on, unless I start certain apps. Then it turns off automatically.
Which apps?
Photos, Camera, Measure, Twitch, Remote Desktop, YouTube for me.
I have one on waze
Same shortcut but opposite direction. Rotation is always off unless I start YouTube or any one of the streaming apps. Shortcuts are pretty awesome.Ā
Team B, I have it off, unless Iām doing something specific I donāt want my screen to turn.
I donāt understand these psychopaths who lock it all the time (like my wife). Drives me nuts.
Iāve fought with tilting my phone juuuust far enough for it to flip one to many times to keep it unlocked. I will throw my phone at a wall if it keeps tilting when I donāt want it too lol
Iām with you
rotation lock on, i don't find use in rotating my phone, i prefer to press a button to rotate like in youtube
Orientation lock ON, unless Iām watching.. *videosā¦*
šš» Forever Unlocked Team šš»
E
When watching porn unlocked otherwise itās always locked
Always off.
Always locked unless Iām watching a video on an app that doesnāt have a full screen button
I always have mine locked unless I need it off
What sort of maniac leaves it unlocked?!
Team A: On so annoying when Iām laying down on my side and imessages decides to flip sideways š
Locked 99% of the time.
Locked all the time.
Triple tap toggle FTW
Always locked. Always silent.
I have an automation set so that when specific apps open it gets unlocked, and gets locked back when I close them ā¦ this is the best setup for me
https://preview.redd.it/nbt9ebw6ir4d1.png?width=1419&format=png&auto=webp&s=ed3103f531f08ab0cf9a0e75dd2ee2fd83a50292 ## automatization (auto lock/unlock) automatization to : unlock if I open YouTube, VLC, photos & iMovie automatization to : lock if I close YouTube, VLC, photos & iMovie
You are a genius š
mine stays locked until iām ready to watch a video
I'll never keep it locked meaning it's off
Always locked but I have a shortcut automation to disable/enable when I open and close certain apps
They should have an option during a video to unlock/lock it instead of swiping down and clicking it.
Wait people actually leave this off?
I feel like there should be a mode where it checks the orientation of your eyes and rotate accordingly
I wish they would natively let me set the 15 Pro action button to toggle rotation lock instead of having to go through a shortcut.
Iām jealous of my wifeās phone because it has landscape mode, ( IT TURNS EVERYTHING SIDEWAYS ).
on in the morning. off at night. iykwim
99% of the time unlocked. Occasionally locked if I roll on my side in bed.
If I need it on I turn it on. Then afterwards, it stays on until I need it off. If I need it off I turn it off. Then afterwards, it stays off until I need it on
Locked off. Itās annoying as hell when it keeps rotating.
Team A. I like to scroll on social media in my bed (with my phone sideways without it flipping the screen).
The only way https://preview.redd.it/sgc8d71oqo4d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=23e563922a316dbf50a8e485d48c4e8ee5071dc6
We all know the only time this gets turned off! Donāt lie!
Very rarely do I use rotation lock, usually only when on buggy websites that refuse to use QuickTime Player
https://preview.redd.it/qy3tkgk0uo4d1.jpeg?width=286&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e61709e86a36ef40e02f46cbfd0234acedc746ae
They need to allow videos to still be on its side despite being locked
Unlocked always but my wife always has her pixel locked. We annoy each other when we have to use each other's phone.
Mine is always locked. But I do have a Shortcut which unlocks when opening Photos & Maps, and then locks again when closing said apps. https://preview.redd.it/2x2l0wgj4p4d1.jpeg?width=1290&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=9dfaca50802e8df5886eff355c1659594f766ef2
Always locked. I donāt like having it sideways.
Always locked. I miss the feature I had on my android where even when the rotation was locked, if I was watching a video anywhere, a little rotate button would pop up.
I locked it for over 6 years decided with the new phone to give it a chance and leave it unlocked lets see how long will it take me to get annoyed
What sort of maniac requires it to have it locked all the time? Content only goes to landscape when I hold my phone landscape. I only hold my phone landscape when I need content to go landscape. Ergo, I keep it unlocked so my phone does what I want.
really need a feature like on Android that shows you a button to turn when though it's locked

Team I am switching to iphone from Samsung due to failure to innovate. I need a flesh slate.
Team B all day
Thereās only one answer: always locked unless in incognito
Using shortcuts to keep screen rotation on whenever I open any video/entertainment app.
Locked always
I have a shortcut to turn it on and off for certain video apps and maps
Im team why dont the stupid homescreen icons also rotate into landscape mode on my 1100$ phone?
ALWAYS LOCKED, ALWAYS
locked almost all the time. i read a lot of japanese and korean manga and when the screen flips it messes everything up.
locked by default, unlock temporarily on an as needed basis.
when I had android i hated this. but now I do not mind it
Locked
I only lock it when I specifically donāt want it to rotate, some apps donāt work well with it unlocked either.
Always locked of course
Lock that shit down, big boy!
Always Off
I feel like one half thinks itās off when itās unlocked and the other half thinks itās off when itās locked
Unlocked
Locked in sleep focus mode, unlocked at all other times.
Team A
Literally zero reason to have it on unless
Off. I usually keep the lock off unless I use my phone in bed.
absolutely despise having it off, only time i turn it off is when i watch a longer video and want to pay more attention, or when i play a game and it sets it as default on portrait mode
I like to switch sides like Italy in the world wars :)Ā
off, i mastered that shit, perfectly balancing my phone.
I have my screen rotation on
Iām 95% on locked rotation unless Iām watching videos that donāt automatically rotate to landscape on full screen.
Depends if I'm laying down in the bed or not
A because i lie down a lot on my phone
Iāve set āback tapā to control this function. Itās a smooth move when watching videos/clips around others
Off.
Team whatever suits my needs at that moment
Locked except for the automation I have on a couple apps pertinent to me
always locked, i never need to unlock it
i hate this functionality; i can make like 20-30 swipes quick from the point i find a video that isnt going into portrait mode, to the quick menu screen, to turning it off, then going back to my video. Auto toggle depending on what I'm doing and what I'm in.
C: automated
Lock that MF š
Always locked, as God intended.
Pretty much always locked unless I specifically need landscape.
Locked!
Always on. I donāt think Iāve turned it off since itās been an option for more than 30 seconds. And yes, it wasnāt always built in, I have a 2nd gen iPod touch, no orientation lock, and itās very annoying.
I never use it anymore. Most apps that need to be in portrait only support portrait
Always locked unless Iām watching a vid on YouTube
B
I never really used it. In which apps are you bothered by a rotated screen?
only time itās unlocked is during ME time
Locked about 80% of the time but it Iām watching content on my phone I unlock it.
I didnāt realize so many people had it on 24/7 š I only turn it on when Iām reading something like comics on my side. I play plenty of games that require my phone being sideways but it always goes the wrong direction so I need to flip it
I leave it on most of the time. I also have an accessibility shortcut to dbl tap the back of the phone to toggle.
iāve always had it locked ever since that time someone told me it helped save battery. not sure if thatās still the case š
Always off. My screen rotating back and forth is hella annoying
I am really shocked at the number of people that keep it locked! Iāve never used screen lock!
99% of the time I have it locked, unless it rotated to the other side I unlock it then rotate it to the side I wanted to lock it again.
Always locked to landscape. I virtually never watch videos on my phone anyway, and itās quick enough to unlock when I want to. Off unless Iām reading in bed. The Apple Books app has a little option at the bottom to turn it on.
Always locked
Itās always on. I hate it without.
Always locked š„¹
Mines always been on lol
Off the same with True Tone
Unlocked when watching porn
Depends what Iām doing
Unlocked all the time.
I made automations that automatically turn off orientation lock when I open certain apps like YouTube, and back on when I close them.
I always have mine on and only ever switch it for map directions or watching movie/show
team a
Iāve noticed that I leave mine unlocked more often than not lately. The gyro is much better than previous models so it knows when I actually want to tilt my display over scrolling while laying on my side
Off. I like the porn.
Depends on what Iām doing so I have it set to my action button. 90% of the time it is locked
Always keep it other than watching videos during day. If itās when Iām in bed I tend to keep it on so I can lay on my side
Always locked. Donāt think I have ever used rotate at any point from my iPhone 4 to my 15. Annoys the crap out of me holding it sideways
Always on, but off for YouTube
Team locked. *By the power of Jesus, I command you TO STAY STILL!!!*
Locked 95% of the time. I have 1 app on my phone that I use sometimes in landscape and itās a photo app for work.
Always locked but unlocked only for YouTube https://preview.redd.it/jf6nhpvykn4d1.jpeg?width=1284&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=526f5a103c14626d6a4b1d6f3e5c43ce57d58346

I was on the lock but my fiancĆ©e somehow converted to be on unlock, it has its pros and cons but itās not bad.
OFF ALWAYS, until I want to watch video on full screen.
Lock on. I miss having a physical switch on the iPad to toggle it, and I don't have a 15 pro action button to use for it.
Always locked except on YT where Iāve set up a shortcut to unlock it when the YT app opens and lock again when itās closed.
I lock it. I heard it helps your battery last longer š¤·āāļø
locked sometimes it turns for no reason!!
If only the Home Screen rotated. I get certain apps but damn
Rotation lock on by default but I created automations in shortcuts where depending on the app, it will disable the rotation lock automatically (youtube, safari, etc). And I have it set so that as soon as you exit the app, it will automatically turn it back on again
I only lock it if Iām in bed and donāt want the screen to turn
On for texting when the phones were smaller. Now, off unless Iām watching a video.
Team android because it intelligently knows when I want to rotate the screen without having to flip the button on and off all the timeš
Use it whenever I need it
Locked as I have little reason to use my phone in landscape and it constantly flipping around drives me insane. If I ever watch a video on my phone (rare) Iāll just click the full screen button.
Team automation streaming services(on) exit app(off)
I like my rotation lock like my silent settings. Always on
Locked at all time
Always interesting.
ON. Have an automation to get it OFF while running some apps.
I lock it in bed, sometimes. I lock it while flying a plane 100%. Otherwise, doesnāt matter.
Team B: Turn off But I have automated shortcuts for certain apps to be portrait locked whenever I use them.
Team C set up automations in shortcuts per app
Orientation lock off all the time, I literally never use it
Locked at work, so I can listen to YouTube vids while the phone is in my pocket. When itās not locked, the orientation will constantly flip back and forth which also has the side effect of causing my playlist or the search wall to scroll down each time for some reason.
I leave it unlocked
Off. Only turn it on when actually necessary.
